Frank Kabatas came to the U.S. in the late 90s, and his first experience with New York style pizza was as a delivery guy for East Village Pizza. He eventually moved to the West Side, working for a different pizzeria, then eventually returned to the East Side, when he bought the business in 2003. It wasn't easy. Kabatas had to learn English, and figure out how to stay afloat in a very competitive environment, but now more than 20 years on, his business is thriving. Note: this is the FINAL show of 2025 and for our podcast. I've decided after seven years, we've covered pretty much all there is to say about pizza right now. He focused on increasing sales with daily specials one slow day at a time until he covered the entire week. “This kind of aggressive weekday programming has brought in the traffic and revenue we needed on nights that used to be dead,” he says. “I've built out a weekly schedule that gives people a clear reason to visit every single day.” He approached each day with a new special and/or event and shares which days he started with. Uncle G's promotes the days through its social accounts, e-mail and in store. I caught up with a good chunk of The Allegheny High boys in central Oregon while they were out doing what they do best: making Charles Wesley Godwin sound like a freight train and giving folks goosebumps. Trinity Poague appeared to be the perfect college student. A beauty pageant winner, nursing major, and leadership scholar with a bright future ahead of her. But behind the polished image, people close to her noticed growing tension when she was left alone with her boyfriend's 18-month-old son, Romeo “J.D.” Angeles.On the morning J.D. died, everything seemed normal. Trinity, Julian Angeles, and the toddler spent the morning together, talking about lunch and playing. When Julian stepped out to pick up pizza, he expected to return to the same routine. Instead, minutes later, he found his son unresponsive and Trinity screaming for help.Doctors quickly determined J.D.'s injuries were not accidental. He had a fractured skull, severe internal trauma, and signs of violent force. Investigators concluded the injuries occurred while Trinity was alone with him. At trial, prosecutors laid out evidence that left the jury with little doubt.Trinity Poague was convicted of felony murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. The case left a community reeling and raised painful questions about trust, resentment, and what can happen behind closed doors.What do you think drove this tragedy?
