Golf's Preeminent Birthday Podcast makes a triumphant return to celebrate Andy Johnson's 40th birthday. The birthday boy is a bit worse for the wear after a "full swing" on Saturday night, but has plenty of stories to share with Brendan after his weekend running a garage sale. Andy's garage sale was NOT the only family-first event on the schedule this week as the Fitzpatrick brothers took home the trophy at the Zurich Classic. Matt Fitzpatrick might have wins in back-to-back weeks, but his younger brother, Alex, now has a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and a spot in the upcoming PGA Championship thanks to a successful week in New Orleans. Andy and Brendan recap a chaotic finish to the PGA Tour's lone team event where it looked like nobody actually wanted to win before one of the best shots of the year from Matt Fitzpatrick on the 72nd hole. In non-Fitzpatrick takeaways, Andy is stunned to hear that Joseph LaMagna has sold off his Davis Thompson stock after a tough Sunday, and Tom Hoge was spotted at the casino late on Saturday night ahead of a t6 finish. After Brendan and KVV's special YouTube episode on Friday, Andy offers up his take on Jim Furyk leading Team USA at the 2027 Ryder Cup and wonders if Nick Saban would've legitimately been just as good of an option. Nelly Korda made her jump into the "temporary water feature" at Memorial Park - or as most people call it, a pool - after winning her second Chevron Championship and third major. Korda went wire-to-wire in Houston, but it remains to be seen if the event was a business success for the LPGA given broadcast constraints and what seemed like limited attendance. To top it all off, the much-anticipated pool jump was cut from the NBC broadcast and moved behind the Peacock paywall at the last minute. Paul Azinger made the most of his time on cable TV with Bob Papa this weekend while calling the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, filling PJ and Brendan with joy due to his one-liners. Retief Goosen held off a charging Stephen Ames and Zach Johnson to win the event. Lastly on the recap schedule, Andy's Event of the Week on the Legends Tour didn't go well for tournament host Ian Woosnam and questions arise about Henrik Stenson's inability to contend on the Euro's version of the Champions Tour. We will return on Wednesday to preview the return of the PGA Tour to the Blue Monster at Doral. May we resolve to live not by lies, political correctness, wokeness, or ‘repressive tolerance‘ by any name. May we live by the Truth alone, and may God have mercy on us. Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to. — Theodore Dalrymple (Anthony Daniels) Frontpage Magazine interview (August 31, 2005) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, [even] in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. — Romans 10:8-13 KJV Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. — John 14:6 KJV Links Videos / Clips [x] = Played Triggered! NOTICE: This weekly show is now part of the "Happy Hour with John Gaskins" daily podcast, which you can find at SiouxFallsLive.com, MidwestSportsPlus.com, and most podcast platforms like the one you find here! So, if you enjoy the topics Matt & John cover, you'll get those topics, plus relevant local guests, every Monday through Thursday on Happy Hour... so we highly recommend you check that out! So far in this young football season, the Jackrabbits, Coyotes, and Vikings offenses — to varying degrees — continue to struggle to explode for big plays and satisfying full-game performances. At times, they implode. In the Yotes and Vikings cases, for full games.Gee, if only there was a local team to watch right now, in-person!, that has provided fireworks all season long, including a so-far spectacular postseason. Oh, wait, there is, and you don't even have to drive one to four hours to see them. The Sioux Falls Canaries — highest-scoring, most home run-hitting in their league by far — are three wins away from their first American Association championship in 17 years and only their second league title in the 33-year modern inception of the club. So far, they've averaged 10 runs in their five playoff wins, including victories of 7-2 and 11-2 in their two series-clinching win-or-go-home games, propelled by the Birds' best-ever player and league's all-time career home run king Jabari Henry's five total dingers in those two deciding games (three blasts to eliminate league leader Sioux City in the first round on the road, then a pair of homers including a grand slam and 8 RBI in The Birdcage to knock out Fargo-Moorhead). So, before Happy Hour host John Gaskins and Sioux Falls Live sports editor Matt Zimmer break down the bummer offenses — to varying degrees! — of this region's three most popular football teams, they celebrate the culmination of what has been a 15-year climb up a Mt. Everest of rocky obstacles for the Canaries — once the league's worst and near-lowest-budget squad — just to return to the league finals. Then, it's pick-apart time for 3-0 SDSU, 1-2 USD, and the 1-1 Vikings, their offenses, and their quarterbacks Chase Mason, Aidan Bouman, and J.J. McCarthy. How much of the team's struggles have been the field generals' faults, and where do we see things headed? Is it unfair for Jacks fans to be unsettled if not complaining about "only" 37 points and "only" a 16-point win over a non-scholarship team? Is it five-alarm fire time for USD after narrowly escaping Northern Colorado and an 0-3 start? What do we make of both the seven quarters of bumbling of young J.J. McCarthy (save from the amazing fourth quarter in Chicago, which counts for a lot) and the ankle injury that has sidelined him against Cincinnati, which gives journeyman and NDSU legend Carson Wentz his latest and maybe last-ever shot to return to his once-Pro Bowl form?John and Matt answer these questions, then toast the Sanford International and its latest winner Retief Goosen. Finally, rumination on why the once-massive Sunday crowds have fizzled a bit in the eight-year-old event that shares crown jewel status in Sioux Falls with the Summit League Tournament.

“That went very badly for South Africa.” That is how US intelligence analyst, retired Colonel Chris Wyatt rates the showdown in the Oval Office between Presidents Donald Trump and Cyril Ramaphosa. On the issue of farm murders, Wyatt describes how Trump “lets Ramaphosa step into the bear trap. He opened it up. He left it there and Ramaphosa walked right into it…” Wyatt says the meeting was not a good look for either the African National Congress (ANC) or the Democratic Alliance (DA) whose leader John Steenhuisen was there in his capacity as Minister of Agriculture in the Government of National Unity (GNU). “I don't know if he's turned in his DA membership card for an ANC card yet, but maybe he should consider it. I mean, honestly, this really irritated a lot of DA voters very seriously.” As for billionaire Johann Rupert stating that he often doesn't lock his door at night, Wyatt charges: “That was so disingenuous and dishonest that it's heartbreaking. Johann Rupert, you know, he spoke for himself, not for South Africans in my view. And a lot of people think he sold South Africans down the river - and I'd have a hard time disagreeing with that assessment.” However, Wyatt praises golfer Ernie Els Ernie as “a patriot” who “stood up for South Africans”, while golfer Retief Goosen, who still has family living on a farm, walked a more “careful line, but he didn't shy away from the truth”. Overall, Wyatt says: "What we saw from the South African delegation is an attempt to politic…Trump wasn't politicking.”

Retief Goosen or 'The Goose' as he's affectionately known is a South African golfing gem. A quiet man, Retief has always tended to let his golf clubs do the talking. And boy, talk they did! Miguel Angel Jimenez, Fred Couples, Jerry Kelly, Retief Goosen, Jim Furyk. With that kind of top 5 after the second round of the American Family Insurance Championship, is there a shootout in the cards for Sunday at University Ridge? Gary D'Amato and Rob Hernandez of Wisconsin.Golf break down Day 2 and look ahead to the final round.
Since we started the Podcast in early 2020, this weeks guest has been in our Top 5 bucket list players to chat to. We are thrilled to have the great South African Retief Goosen on this weeks Pod. We chat the early years, the infamous lightening strike & military service with his good buddy Ernie Els. As we build towards the US Open next week, this two time winner (2001 & 2004) talks us through the three putt on the 72nd hole in 2001 which consequently led to an 18 hole Play-off victory over Mark Brooks. Arguably Retief's greatest win was in 2004 when he took on Phil Mickelson, the partisan New York crowds and a near unplayable Shinnecock Hills to claim his second US Open. Commonly referred to as “The Iceman”, Retief chats on how to thrive under pressure and we also get his refreshing opinions on the distance debate.
Corey Harris is the head golf professional at the Washington Club in Connecticut. No restaurant? Good, no annual operating losses or monthly restaurant minimums to worry about. No tee times? Even better, you can slip out for a quick nine whenever you please. The Washington Club is well over 100 years old, and is rooted in idiosyncratic tradition. I first came upon the Club upon reading about it in David Owen's article in The Golfer's Journal Issue #4. I was immediately struck by the Headline: 'Your Club's Restaurant is Terrible.' It got me thinking, why must a golf club have a restaurant to be considered complete? Corey and I chatted about the extremely collegial atmosphere created by this dynamic. The Club attracts a wide array of folks ranging from billionaires to Average Joes. They all have one thing in common: a desire to escape the frills and exclusivity of a traditional country club. We also chatted about his career spent playing internationally on several professional tours. Corey offers a sense of how hard it is to make a living playing golf professionally, while sharing tidbits about why it's the most exciting job in the world. P.S. he held his own in a pairing with Retief Goosen and Colin Motgomerie.
An epic debate erupts over the standards of the World Golf Hall of Fame and who deserves to be in. We compare players on the brink such as Zach Johnson, Retief Goosen, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Bubba Watson, and more. We then move into the Sony Open, matchups, and our patented Backasswards segment. Sean helps us close out our 2022 PGA Championship discussion from last episode to close things out. Enjoy!!!
What a great breakdown this was as we talked about 5 tournaments in golf. The main focus was the Fedex St Jude Classic from Memphis, Tenessee. Justin Thomas took a huge three shot victory at 13 under to reclaim the world number 1 that he held back in 2018. He shot a beautiful 65 on Sunday to pull out the huge win. Brooks Koepka had a great opportunity to win just one shot back but hit it into the water on 18 and carded a double bogey. Phil Mickelson, Daniel Berger and Tom Lewis all tied Koepka for second place at 10 under par. Lewis shot 61 66 on the weekend to race up the leaderboard. Brooks goes into this week as the two time defending champion of the PGA Championship which will be held starting Thursday at Harding Park in San Francisco. Our discussion turned to the Barracuda championship and the first victory on the PGA tour for Richie Werenski. This tournament features some emerging talent and is the fifth consecutive year that a player has won his first tournament here. They use the modified stableford scoring system that rewards aggressive play and is fun to watch. We then spoke briefly about the Champions tour and the Ally Challenge from Grand Blanc, Michigan. This was the debut for Jim Furyk in the Champions 50 and over tour and he had a two shot victory! He edged out Retief Goosen and Brett Quigley. Canadian Mike Weir also made his Champions tour debut and played solid and tied for 27th. Our focus shifted to the LPGA tour and the victory for Danielle Kang and her rise to #2 in the womens world ranking. This is the best ranking for an American woman in some time. Her partner in life is Maverick McNealy who finished a very respectable 7th at the Barracuda Championship. He has been having a lot of great results this year and really looked great heading into the final round. What a golfing power couple! The episode finished with us looking at the odds for the upcoming PGA Championship major. We will have a full preview on Wednesday so keep your eye out for that one! We will be giving you best bets and some optimal DraftKings lineups and parlays etc. Take Care, Love Yah, Bye for now!

If these two caddies could avoid flying altogether, they would. And it's not due to a fear of flying... it's just that Jeff Johnson (caddie for Retief Goosen) and Chris P. Jones (Jimmy Walker) prefer having "their stuff" with them at all times and coming and going as they please. Johnson and Jones joined host T.J. Auclair on the latest 'Under the Strap' podcast to talk about their lives zig-zagging the country in the converted home on wheels each of them spend a good chunk of their days in. Along with some crazy -- even scary -- instances they've had during their travels, the pair also share some of the reasons you might consider for traveling by land instead of air.

Everyone has a particular talent on this planet, it I just a matter of finding it. It is like walking or driving a car. You’re going to make mistakes on the way. But you’ve got to find your passion. I was lucky enough to find my passion at Golf at a young age… everyone has something that’s very special. And all it is about is digging in their and finding it and (in return) you will find your way.” - Michael CampbellTo win tickets to the 100th edition of the New Zealand Open this year to watch Michael and former podcast guest, Ryan Fox, play simply share this post, tag 2 friends you would love to share the experience with. There's nothing like Masters week. And for as long as anyone can remember, there's nothing like this particular Masters week. Brian was saying that the winner of the tournament will be declared the Champion Golfer of the Year. With all the rain in England of late, the golf course will be green and the speed of the greens will be a little slower. As always the weather plays an integral part of the Open Championship and determines whether you are 15 over or 16-under par. Brian and Holly talk about the top 3 players in the World and how they may fare at the Open? Brian has Tiger and Luke Donald in the pool for the top two at the Open Championship. Brian has a sense that Luke Donald, the #1 in the World, might be the week he gets it done. Follow Brian at (www.globalgolfpost.com) After the break, Rich and Holly talk about Roger Chapman wins the Senior PGA Championship. Todd Lewis, The Golf Channel, calls in to talk to Holly and Rich about the Open Championship. Todd talks about how Tiger's short game is not as good as it used to be and he doesn't think Tiger will do as well. Todd feels that Tiger is NOT the favorite even though odds makers have him as such. If the course was faster and firmer, then Tiger would be the favorite. But since it won't be, Todd doesn't like Tiger as the Champion. He still doesn't feel Tiger is at the top of his game. Luke Donald or Lee Westwood's chances at winning their first major. Luke doesn't start well at major championships and Todd feels that would be the key for Luke if he starts well, he could finish well. As for Westwood, Todd doesn't like his chances either because his short game is not great. For the Open Championship, you have to get up and down a good bit. Follow Todd at (www.golfchannel.com) Todd feels that an Englishman will win the Open Championship. Jeff Shain, Orlando Sentinel/Tribune Newspapers, calls in from the Open Championship in the U.K., to wrap up the Show. Jeff tells listeners that the weather will be way better than previously expected. The bunkers are penal enough as is with a multitude of them at Royal Lytham, but Jeff says with the rain of late there on top of the type of sand, bunker play will be heavier and clumpy. Jeff picked four Europeans including Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington and Retief Goosen. Follow Jeff on his blog at (http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports-golf/)
