When two vulnerable women vanish from the streets of East London within weeks of each other, detectives uncover a chilling predator hiding in plain sight. Derek Brown, a convicted rapist and serial sex attacker, targeted Xiao Mei Guo, a mother selling DVDs to support her family, and Bonnie Barrett, a young woman struggling on the margins of society. Both were last seen with Brown before disappearing forever.Despite extensive searches, neither woman's body has ever been found. Inside Brown's flat, investigators discovered traces of blood, evidence of a frantic clean up, and purchases suggesting careful planning. As police piece together the case, they begin to fear Brown was seeking infamy, deliberately hunting victims in Whitechapel, the infamous territory of Jack the Ripper.A haunting story of loss, vulnerability and a killer who may have been stopped before striking again.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. Why are so many of us are unknowingly blocking ourselves from feeling loved whilst desperately trying to chase it? Harry Reis is a renowned social psychologist and Professor at the University of Rochester who has spent decades researching love, intimacy, vulnerability, and what actually makes humans feel connected. He recently co-authored the book 'How to Feel More Loved' with Sonja Lyubomirsky, who is one of the world’s leading happiness researchers. Ripper collab right there, huh! We spoke about online dating checklists, social media validation, the weird performance of modern identity, AI relationships, conflict, growth, and the fear most of us carry that if people really knew us… they’d leave. Harry also dropped one idea worth pondering... that love isn’t just romance. It’s belonging... it's being seen, understood, valued, and safe enough to be fully human around other people. There’s also a lot in this one about the tension between comfort and growth too. Why relationships that never challenge us don’t actually deepen us. Why rupture and repair matters. Why conflict isn’t failure. And why the things that shape us most are usually the hard conversations, awkward truths, and moments where we stop hiding behind the polished version of ourselves. Also… we somehow ended up talking about robot partners, Star Trek, and whether AI could ever replace human love. So, there’s that... Since Victorian times, people have been obsessed with Jack the Ripper. There are endless volumes full of history about him and the gory deaths of his five victims. What's missing is information about the lives of the women he killed—until now. In this episode from our archives, we sit down with Hallie Rubenhold, social historian and author of the recently published book, The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper. In this eye-opening interview, we discover that, contrary to popular narrative, Jack the Ripper's victims were almost certainly not all prostitutes. Rubenhold has painstakingly reconstructed the previously untold stories of these five women, whose greatest tragedy was not being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but rather being born women in the Victorian era. Instead of focusing on these women's deaths, as virtually all study pertaining to the mystery of Jack the Ripper does, Rubenhold instead focuses on these women's lives, which have been roundly ignored by historians until now. The story of each woman provides a portrait of the underbelly of Victorian London, as well as gives incredible insight into the entire Victorian period, highlighting the vivid contrast between rich and poor and demonstrates how unbelievably precarious life was for women, particularly lower-class women, of the time. He's the London serial killer you may never have even knew existed - from the late 1950's to the mid 1960's, West London was shocked by the deaths of several sex workers, stripped, strangled, and their bodies dumped unceremoniously, like pieces of rubbish. It's commonly considered to be the UK's most prolific series of unsolved serial killings, claiming more victims than his similar namesake the previous century, and in a joint 8 part series between myself, and the award nominated Murder Mile podcast, each week myself and Mike will examine the case in full detail, sifting through misinformation, lies, rumour and perhaps even downright corruption. The True Crime Enthusiast and Murder Mile have brought you so far the accounts of four dead women – Elizabeth Figg, Gwyneth Rees, Hannah Tailford and Irene Lockwood, found dead around the river Thames over a four year period from 1959 to 1963 – with police considering:Was there another Ripper on the loose?Police were soon to believe that there was – with the deaths of another four women, whose tales we shall account in Part 2 and B.Join myself on The True Crime Enthusiast for parts 1 to 4, and Mike over on Murder Mile for parts A to D, as we continue Undressing - 'Jack The Stripper'The episode contains details and descriptions of crimes and events, including descriptions of a sexual nature, that some listeners may find disturbing or distressing, so discretion is advised whilst listening in. This week, to enhance our Crime Classics episode from last Thursday, we have a Robert Bloch story that was talked about in that episode called, “Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper,” presented on the Molle Mystery Theater. This story takes the infamous killer out of Victorian London and drops him into modern-day Chicago… with a twist. What if Jack the Ripper never died? What if he's been staying alive all these years through something darker? The story follows Sir Guy Hollis, a man obsessed with tracking the killer, as his search leads him closer and closer to the truth. In 1888, the streets of Whitechapel became the hunting ground for the most infamous killer in history. Five women were murdered, a city descended into panic, and a name written in red ink turned a shadow in the fog into a legend. But the story of Jack the Ripper isn't just about the man who vanished into the East End. It's about the women he killed, the society that failed them, and a mystery that still refuses to stay buried. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Edward Buckley was a violent East End tough whose life unfolded in the same streets and shadows as the Whitechapel murders. Born into a rough, crime-entangled family, he grew up in a world of poverty, street gangs, and routine violence -where assaults, intimidation, and desperation were part of daily life in 1880s London. My guest is Jonathan Tye, author of "Jack the Ripper? Edward Buckley: East End Thug and Gang Member". His book revisits the Whitechapel murders of 1888 and the years around them, bringing the focus back to the neighborhoods where they happened and the kinds of men who lived there. Could Buckley, a local thug with a documented history of brutalizing women, offer a clearer way to understand the events known as the Autumn of Terror? Known for shifting the focus away from sensationalised killers and back onto the lives of overlooked victims, Hallie explores what happens when we start questioning the stories we've always accepted as truth. We talk about the danger of “campfire retellings” in true crime, why history is often built on incomplete or biased perspectives, and how context can completely transform a narrative. Hallie shares what drove her to reclaim the stories of the women linked to Jack the Ripper, why she avoids focusing on the killer entirely, and how her latest work continues to challenge the way crime — and truth — are constructed.

This week on the Scary Spirits Podcast, we draw back the velvet curtain to commemorate the U.S. release anniversary of Hammer Horror's 1971 classic, Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde, released on April 15th. With scholarly precision and a suitably macabre twinkle, hosts Karen and Greg examine the film's daring reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's tale—where science, repression, and identity intertwine in true Hammer fashion. Expect thoughtful discussion of the film's performances, atmosphere, gender-bending shock, and its enduring place in the golden age of British horror cinema. Naturally, such an elegant descent into madness demands refreshment. As the clock strikes midnight, our hosts raise a glass to the good doctor with a themed Brandy Old Fashioned cocktail, rich, refined, and just a touch dangerous—much like the film itself. If you are a devotee of Hammer Horror films, classic 1970s horror cinema, or simply relish intelligent conversation steeped in Gothic charm, then join us… because some experiments are far too fascinating to resist. Listen now to Scary Spirits Podcast — where classic horror meets wickedly good spirits. Brandy Old Fashioned • 2 oz brandy• 1/2 oz simple syrup• 3 dashes aromatic bitters• 2 dashes orange bitters• Garnish: orange peel and brandied cherry Instructions: Add brandy, simple syrup, aromatic bitters, and orange bitters to a glass with ice and stir until well chilled. Squeeze the orange peel over the glass and drop it in. Garnish with a brandied cherry. Source: ohlq.com A Brief Synopsis: Blackly comic variation on the classic tale, in which the good doctor, experimenting with ways to prolong life, tests the formula on himself and metamorphoses into a beautiful woman. His alter ego turns out to have a very nasty streak, killing prostitutes who, terrified of Jack the Ripper, believe they have nothing to fear from a woman. Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include: We learn about the original novella by Robert Louis Stevenson that inspired the film. The history of the White Chapel murders is discussed. Dr. Karen tells us all about the use of Lime in mass burials. Karen gives us stats about the murder rate of men. Poltergeist activity remains one of the most misunderstood and disputed phenomena in paranormal research. Unlike traditional hauntings, poltergeist cases — a term derived from the German words for "noisy ghost" — involve flying objects, spontaneous fires, unexplained sounds, and even physical assaults on the living. But are these terrifying events caused by restless spirits, or could the source of the chaos be something far closer to home? Researchers have documented dozens of cases suggesting that the answer may be both — and that certain locations seem to attract and amplify paranormal energy in ways that blur the line between haunting and human. From the infamous Tina Resch case in Columbus, Ohio, to the Enfield Poltergeist in North London, to a farm in Macomb, Illinois consumed by mysterious fires, the evidence points to something that science has yet to fully explain. These are the cases that have challenged investigators, baffled law enforcement, and left witnesses questioning everything they thought they knew about the world around them.FEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: We'll look at several cases of reported poltergeist activity and try to determine if it's supernatural, human in nature, or possibly a little of both. My guest this week is Suzanne Huntington, co editor of Ripperologist Magazine and author of the recently published book "The Thames Torso Murders: Fact or Fiction?" She not only talks about the “Canonical Four” Thames Torso murders and the possible killer (or killers), but she also takes a wider look at Victorian era dismemberment cases in and around London, the challenge of separating fact from long repeated myth, and the ways these crimes have been linked (rightly or wrongly) to the Whitechapel murders and Jack the Ripper. It is a fascinating deep dive into one of the most unsettling murder series of the late 19th century. Sarah had joined dating apps under the name “Domina Cherry,” using the alias to gain access to hundreds of men she planned to murder in an effort to become the most prolific serial killer to ever live. Reportedly obsessed with notorious murderers, including Ted Bundy, Jack the Ripper, and Richard Ramirez, Sarah aspired to match their depravity and notoriety. This case forces us to confront something uncomfortable - because there is a clear and crucial difference between studying killers to understand them, and idolizing them to the point of wanting to become one. True crime asks us to look darkness in the face...while Sarah took notes on how to replicate it.
