Episode 29 - Murdock and Marvel: 1989 Part 2 This week we finish up the 80s, and see what another round of Batmania can do to and for the comics world. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1989. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #262- 275, Marvel Tales #222, Marvel Comics Presents #19, Saga of the Sub-Mariner #9, What if…? #1-2, Excalibur #14, Wolverine #17 Writing credits: Ann Nocenti (262-275) Nocenti & Romita Jr (266 - Plot by Nocenti and Romita Jr., script by Nocenti) Pencilers: John Romita Jr (262-263, 265-275), Steve Ditko (264) Inks: Al Williamson (262-263, 265-275), Mike Manley and Williamson (264) As the year begins, Daredevil is still missing and presumed dead. Though Daredevil is coached (taunted) by to live by his old mentor Stick. Meanwhile NYC is seeing objects come to life and attacking humans (Think Maximum Overdrive) – which seems to be part of the inferno event. Upon going to the hospital, Karen and Mary show up to visit and Karen learns Matt has been cheating on her. After an issue hiatus featuring the Owl and the Bombers because John Romita Jr was getting married and wasn't available to draw, we see a resolution of sorts with Daredevil taking down a demon onslaught. After spending Christmas in a bar with Mephisto as Daredevil, Matt burns all his belongings and leaves NYC. What followings is a string of stories about Murdock being a loner and helping out as Daredevil when he can. He saves a man from a crashed plane, helps a man get out of an illegal loansharking business, saves a mutant girl from Blob and Pyro. In September we see Daredevil and Spider-Man team up. This will be our spotlight story for the week. Next Daredevil helps Brandy Ash expose her father's inhumane animal farm – which leads to release of young woman who was being experimented on known as number 9. This led to a multi-book story arch that finished out the year by introduced a new villain, Shotgun, and brought in the inhumans. The year ends with a second December book that was part of the Acts of Vengeance event and shows Doctor Doom reviving Ultron and orders it to destroy Daredevil but it is conflicted by all the previous versions of itself and meeting Number 9. New Powers, Toys or Places: half the year takes place outside of New York city, but seemly not outside New York state – in various small towns. New Supporting Characters: Amanda (young mutant saved from Freedom Force), Brandy Ash (young ecologist who doesn't like her father's farm), Number 9 (young woman experimented on by Skip Ash), inhumans (Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon Petragon, Karnak Mander-Azur) New Villains: Mephisto (demon lord who has drinks with Daredevil in a bar as a young woman), Blackheart (Mephisto's “son”), Freedom Force (Blob, Pyro and Spiral), Skip Ash (terrible human to animals and young women), Shotgun (special forces in the military and member of the CIA called on by Skip Ash) This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #270 September 1989 “Blackheart” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway So how is that “comics are dying” idea going a decade later? Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you! Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm. You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/. The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts. Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data. Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details. The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years. Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

I had the incredible opportunity to chat with 13-year-old Shannon Miles at the Trump Doral in Miami for the ReAwaken America Tour. What struck me was his inspiring passion for truth, freedom, and our country. As the host of The Young Patriot, Shannon is on a mission to awaken children to the reality of the world's corruption and evil. We discuss his journey, starting with his baptism in fire and water, and how he began creating Lego animations called Freedom Force in response to God's call.Shannon's unwavering love for the Lord, people, and our country serves as a powerful reminder that even the youngest among us can make a difference. Join us as we talk about the rise of young patriots who are waking up and realizing the slippery slope our world is on. Intro Background Mystique, Raven Darkholme, created by Chris Claremont & Dave Cockrum in Ms. Marvel #16 (April 1978) To this day, Mystique's true origins have never been revealed The earliest stories place her around 1900, where she was presenting as male and in a relationship with Irene Adler (Destiny), an obvious reference to Sherlock Holmes While undercover, she had a short fling with Sabretooth, which led to a child Graydon Creed - despite having 2 mutant parents, Graydon is a normal human who comes to resent all mutants - he grows up to become a powerful politician before being assassinated by a time-traveling version of Mystique #BecauseComics She is later seduced by Azazel., and becomes pregnant with a baby that she abandoned at birth - the baby would be taken in and named Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler Side note - Claremont intended for Mystique & Destiny to be Nightcrawler's parents, but the Code wouldn't allow a lesbian relationship at the time Encounters a young runaway girl from Mississippi, and after Destiny foresees that she will become important to them, she takes in the young Rogue and acts as her foster mother She leads a version of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and trains Rogue to join them and attack Ms. Marvel - Rogue ends up absorbing Carol's powers, memories, and personality for a time #BecauseComics Turns the Brotherhood “legit” as Freedom Force, and they work for the government, while still clashing with the X-Men - during this time, Irene is killed, and this has a serious impact on her Joins X-Factor under duress, but after some time she escapes and flees to Europe, where she becomes a top fashion model Joins the X-Men as a shapeshifter named Foxx, and attempts to seduce Gambit so she can break up Gambit & Rogue and set up Rogue with another mutant - the ploy fails, but she joins the team on a probationary basis - Kurt says he needs time to process, though, which she gives him Works with Gambit & the Marauders to betray Mister Sinister in the fallout of M-Day - Logan is sent to kill her, and he severely wounds her, but does not finish the job She is later actually killed by Logan after she had been posing as Professor X for Norman Osborn's Dark X-Men She was revived by the Hand, and posed as Dazzler, who was a mutant liaison for SHIELD in Madripoor Had a tender moment with Rogue before her wedding to Gambit Serves on the Quiet Council of Krakoa as a Winter representative Issues - Piercing the veil Can't really be herself because of the hatred towards mutants Always distant in her relationships - rare exceptions, like Irene & Rogue Inner self-acceptance isn't always reflected in outer appearance, which is difficult Break (37:27) Plugs for Take a Knee for Marvel vs. DC, Into the Knight, and Chris Claremont Treatment (38:42) In-universe - Become emotions, not people Out of universe Skit (49:34) ***knock at the door*** Come in -***Mrs Issues*** Hey, just stopping by Oh! Um…usually you text me, but ok, I thought you were my next patient -No problem, I figured I hadn't been to your office in a while and I know you've had some rough days. Thanks *pause* I thought you had class tonight. -I do, that's why I brought someone along with me to cheer you up; plus you can keep watch for a bit. I'll be right back but I have to get my stuff from the car. ***door closes*** As always. But where's -***Door opens***Daughter Issues*** Daddy! *pause* Ok Getthef**kout -WHAT? Why? ***fake crying*** Seriously get out or identify yourself or I'm calling the police -***some sort of morphing sound, now Mystique*** M: well you don't have to be so rude, I thought you were a professional. D Professional enough to know my own daughter hasn't called me “daddy” in years. Her choice, not mine. And I guess I can't call the police on my own patient if I haven't given them a chance to explain. Don't expect me to be cheery after a stunt like that. - M You're perceptive, I'll grant you that. But now we have a problem. D I know what my problem is. What's yours? M *sigh* Let's be real. You can't fight me, and I don't necessarily want to fight you. But you're valuable. More than you know. D You were going to kidnap me?! M *laughs* No, nothing as dramatic as that. This was supposed to be a stealth operation. You have information. I need it. D I've already been down that rabbit hole. Secure encryption, magical wards, along with undisclosed offshore servers have made sure I don't make the same mistake ever again. M Doom really hooked you up, then. D HOW…*deep breath*...you are masterful, you know that? Always seeking more information, more leverage. M: It's my currency, it's how I get ahead. D: But do you need that anymore? You don't come across as someone who wants to be at the beck and call of someone else, but you also find ways to put yourself as the center of attention, even if no one else knows it yet. I know those aren't mutually exclusive, but that can get complicated very fast. M: My life is complicated? Hmmm, I would have never thought that in a hundred years…no wait, that is EXACTLY what I've spent every day for the last hundred-plus years thinking about. I have enough baggage to fill an entire airport. I just choose which ones to pick up on various occasions. D: So what set of circumstances would lead you to add me to the mix? It's obvious you don't want therapy. M: I won't divulge my secrets if you won't divulge yours. D: This isn't a negotiation. M: Au contraire. All conversations are negotiations. Most people don't apply the proper context. Or pressure. D: This must be so difficult for you. You're talking to a person that's not of your world, nothing to offer that you couldn't weasel out in some other way, and yet, this is the path you chose. You find me weak, but interesting, and I don't know why. M: *pause* Are you fishing, or trying to sound profound? D: Why not both? My point is, you seem to set up your own challenges without respect to the person, or the emotional consequences even for yourself. I'll give you a hypothetical. What if you learn of someone you DIDN'T want to have on your radar, and they hunt you down after they destroy me? Is that risk worth it? M: It wouldn't be the first time that someone else gets hurt in the crossfire. D: But what if it's someone you actually care about? Are you really going to throw away the opportunity to improve a lasting relationship for the sake of an odd job or morbid curiosity? What if I could offer you that chance and the other person is willing to talk about it…with you and me? M: You can't make promises like that. D: Never said I could. But I can try. That's all I'm saying. M: I know for a fact that you aren't a…family therapist. D: Who said it was family? M: *pause* I… D: *snaps fingers* YOU were fishing! You didn't know! This was a hunch, wasn't it? M: *sigh* There aren't that many psychiatrists that delve into…our type, for lack of a better term. Word spreads fast. I have the background on your services, but things were locked out, as you so eloquently put it, before I could get any good dirt. But still…if there was a chance… D: There's no alternative mission…no monetary gain? You really just want…hmmm…I meant what I said. No guarantees. This may get messy. M: As always. So…you know, I may have wanted someone that is NOT considered a person close to me. If I disclose it, would you be able to set up someone like that, too? D: Nope Nope Nope. This is a one-time deal. You get one person, I contact on my time. If they say no, you don't get another chance. Understood? M: Clearly. Doesn't mean I will stop trying. I have more on you, you know. Think about it. Every person you see in your life could be me, doctor. A. Ny. One. D: And every person you meet is an opportunity for you to stop looking at them as a puppet to mimic, and engage them for who you really are. I guess we'll both have doubts. M: You are learning to negotiate better. Keep at it, and I might consider this…therapeutic. ***for end of show*** No matter how complicated life can be, you'll always have control of your own mystique - M: ***morphing sound*** Oh do you, now? Uhhhhhh…for Anthony I guess? Gah! I'm Doctor Issues thank you so much we'll see you next week! Ending (55:06) Recommended reading: Mystique by Brian K. a loose sequel to the Mutant Massacre the X-Men and Freedom Force have to work together to save the world. Meanwhile, Storm and Forge have been forced out into an alternate world where time moves faster and in their time they have been gone for years, in our time they've been gone a few days. Will they make it back in time to help the X-Men? We read: Uncanny X-Men #225-227 There are more issues, 13 total not including tie-ins but after reading them all I found it made the story more convoluted than it needed to be. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/web-heads/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/web-heads/support
The Avengers get their own graphic novel...or do they? The Vault has a breakout led by Venom, and this mostly seems to be a story about the rivalry between Venom and the Vault's warden. As the Avengers head to the Vault to stop the villains from escaping, they're joined by Freedom Force, meaning there are characters galore in these pages!
Acts of Vengeance continues as the Avengers fight a few of the members of Freedom Force in Avengers Park! Is the Scarlet Witch still crazy? Are Dr. Pym and the Wasp still the stars of the show? And will any Avengers die (of course not!)?

The name comes from a draft document composed in 1914 by Colonel George O'Callaghan-Westropp, self-styled as The O'Callaghan, a county Clare landlord. O'Callaghan-Westropp was an activist in the British conservative-nationalist mobilisation against Home Rule and lost out through agrarian agitation and government intervention in the years running up to 1914 (that is the years of the Ranch War). He later re-invented himself as a leading activist in the Irish Farmers' Union. This episode tells his story and also looks at the Farmers' Union and its clash with the labour movement over attempts to control food prices through regulating food exports in 1920 (the Butter and Bacon Embargo). The Irish Farmers' Union also had a political wing – the Irish Farmers' Party and a proposed paramilitary wing – the Farmers' Freedom Force. Hosted on Acast. Freshman Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., is one of several new members of Congress who have formed the “Freedom Force.” The group of conservative Republican leaders say they will stand against the far left agenda being promoted by the so-called "Squad” led by fellow New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other liberal Democrats. Malliotakis is the daughter of Greek and Cuban immigrants and says she decided to run for Congress when she saw the damage progressive policies were having on her state and across America. She joins the podcast to explain her policy priorities and how she plans to stand up against the left's agenda. Echoing last week's episode, this week we see a decidedly dated-looking game (City Connection) that nevertheless manages to be entertaining enough to transcend its relative age and sit comfortably in the 1988 NES lineup. On the other hand, Freedom Force is anything but dated, with some of the most stylish visuals seen to this point on NES. I'd rather play City Connection, but there's no denying the primal visual appeal of Freedom Force's attract mode.... Also, a bit of housekeeping: The host segments will be a little unusual for the next few episodes as my office space is currently unavailable for filming, forcing me to tape next to my portable photo box for the time being. Also, I realized while reviewing this episode that I made a point unclearly—I said Freedom Force is the first example on NES of a Japanese and American studio collaborating, which obviously isn't true. It's the first example I can name of the Japanese and American branches *of a single studio* collaborating on a project. In a change of pace for the Electronic Wireless Show this week, Nate is on holiday and we're joined by special guest VidBud Colm Ahern to discuss our favourite special powers from video games. The title is actually a misnomer, because I immediately go on to say that really we're talking about weird or supernatural special powers, not super powers like wot The Avengers have. An example, that we talk about at in fact, is Max's power to rewind time in Life Is Strange. Our diversions this week are less likely to involve the term "bumeggs", but we do spend ages talking about whether or not a character in Resident Evil 7 has a beehive for a bum or not. Also, it turns out that we mostly want special abilities that facilitate the acquisition and consumption of food. We did record this around lunchtime, in fairness. To make things more confusing, the Cavern Of Lies this week is superhero themed, specifically around 2002 strategy game Freedom Force. A scientist on Muir Island has developed a cure for the X-gene, and mutants are lining up around the block to enlist the doctor's services (such as Rogue), or to take him out permanently (such as Cable and the Freedom Force). In this episode, Cable fights Freedom Force, the kids get a new mentor, Rob shows us how much he likes drawing ladies in mini-dresses, and I have a hard time saying "Moira"

When I first realized I needed to learn exactly how the Federal Reserve, central banks and "fractional reserve banking" actually worked, I did a lot of research and reading. Almost all the historical and analytical references I found led back to the preeminent work on this subject by G. Edward Griffin, called The Creature from Jekyll Island. This great educational book is available from Amazon, and I highly recommend reading it, for anyone who wants to understand how the scam of modern banking actually works. Hear the audio version here: https://youtu.be/wy95j_dNeNc Besides being a world-class authority on the banking system, Mr. Griffin is also the founder of Freedom Force, an organization designed to help people of good character get elected to public office. In addition, he publishes a great free weekly newsletter, Need To Know News, which covers a wide range of important current events. I have enjoyed this excellent news source for years. Most people seem to think that banks actually have money that they lend out to generate a return, but the amazing truth is that banks are allowed to lend money they do not have. The term "fractional reserve banking" suggests that maybe banks take your deposit and then lend out part of it to make money, and keep the rest in their possession in case some of their customers want to withdraw money. This would make some sense, but that's not really how it works. In actual practice, the bank takes in your deposit, and it is then allowed to lend out several times that amount, in other words, money it doesn't have. Twilight Zone looks normal by comparison. It is the basis for the massive power that banks have over governments and all aspects of our lives. But that's only the tip of the iceberg. G. Edward Griffin will join us with the rest of the story.

Jason Hartman is joined by returning guest and best-selling author of The Creature from Jekyll Island, G. Edward Griffin, for a discussion of the hot topic of the United States' “fiscal cliff.” As Mr. Griffin shares, the fiscal cliff is nothing new. It has been there for roughly 50 years and applying a name to it now is a scare tactic by the government. Mr. Griffin talks about fractional reserve banking and how it has led to the economic mess our country and world are in today. It is no longer a fractional reserve; it is at zero reserve and Mr. Griffin feels the economy is going to collapse from all of the borrowing to pay old debt. This will lead to a fully regimented society, which Mr. Griffin describes as drifting toward totalitarian, a scary concept. He goes on to discuss short and long term ways to protect ourselves, preserving any wealth one might have, and being prepared as much as possible for anything that may come to pass. He feels the Fed will continue to inflate, raise taxes for a while, and then probably cut taxes again at some point. It will be more of the same, more and more governmental control over our lives, more and more money created out of nothing, and less and less freedom. G. Edward Griffin is a writer and documentary film producer with many successful titles to his credit. Listed in Who's Who in America, he is well known because of his talent for researching difficult topics and presenting them in clear terms that all can understand. He has dealt with such diverse subjects as archaeology and ancient Earth history, the Federal Reserve System and international banking, terrorism, internal subversion, the history of taxation, U.S. foreign policy, the science and politics of cancer therapy, the Supreme Court, and the United Nations. His better-known works include The Creature from Jekyll Island, World without Cancer, The Discovery of Noah's Ark, Moles in High Places, The Open Gates of Troy, No Place to Hide, The Capitalist Conspiracy, More Deadly than War, The Grand Design, The Great Prison Break, and The Fearful Master. Mr. Griffin is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he majored in speech and communications. In preparation for writing his book on the Federal Reserve System, he enrolled in the College for Financial Planning located in Denver, Colorado. His goal was not to become a professional financial planner but to better understand the real world of investments and money markets. He obtained his CFP designation (Certified Financial Planner) in 1989. Mr. Griffin is a recipient of the coveted Telly Award for excellence in television production, the creator of the Reality Zone Audio Archives, and is President of American Media, a publishing and video production company in Southern California. He has served on the board of directors of The National Health Federation and The International Association of Cancer Victors and Friends. He is Founder and President of The Coalition for Visible Ballots, The Cancer Cure Foundation, and Freedom Force International. Mr. Griffin was recently a speaker at the September Casey Research Summit in Carlsbad, CA, speaking on Freedom Force.

Chris Eberle of Wild Pig Comics returns once more, bearing the torch of knowledge to light our way through the second half of the X-Men's Copper Age, perhaps the darkest period in Marvel mutant history. 'Inferno', 'The Fall of the Mutants,' and 'Mutant Massacre'. Longshot, Psylocke, and Jubilee. The Marauders, the Reavers, and the Freedom Force. Australia, Genosha, and the Siege Perilous. Death, disfigurement, and desperation. All of this and more awaited the X-Men in the late '80s, and now, it awaits YOU. Not for the faint-hearted! (1:44:58)
Part parody, part loving homage to the Silver Age of comic books, Freedom Force was the best superhero video game that we played before the advent of Arkham. This episode, the Moving Pixels podcast turns back the clock to revisit a title by Irrational Games that really holds up despite its age.
Ken Levine from Irrational Games drops by the show to talk about what made Freedom Force so special. Is it an RPG or a strategy game? We discuss the virtues of pausable real time play, the fine line between homage and parody and learn about what games Ken plays when he is not writing kick ass game stories.
