I LOVE books.  The way they smell, what they offer, the energy that they are! Today I share about two books that have inspired me to lean into things I have RESISTED. Masculine energy in my business in the form of a budget. "She Builds" by Jadah Sellner and  "Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey both offered ideas that are sparking and re-igniting my desire to harmonize the masculine and feminine sides of budget, money and business. So FUN! XO Ange

For moms juggling businesses and family, the pressure to "do it all" doesn't just feel overwhelming—it feels impossible. The push to work faster, harder, and longer leads to exhaustion, frustration, and a sense of failure when life doesn't go according to plan.  For years, we've been sold the idea that hustle = success. But the more we embrace the hustle culture, the more we sacrifice our health, relationships, and happiness. There's a better way to build your dream business, one that doesn't leave you feeling drained. How would your life and business look if you didn't have to do everything all at once? What if slowing down and focusing on fewer things actually made you feel happier and more successful? In this episode, I welcome back published author, keynote & TEDx speaker Jadah Sellner, who shares her “anti-hustle” approach to growing a business that nourishes your life instead of depleting it. If you've been feeling the pressure to juggle every role at lightning speed, this episode is your invitation to pause.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  Why hustling isn't the only path to success Hustle culture tells us to go faster, do more, and never stop. But what if slowing down actually helped you achieve more? How to build a business that fits your life You can create a business that makes you happy and doesn't leave you feeling tired all the time. How can you enjoy your work without feeling overwhelmed? Why saying "no" is important Not everything is worth your time. Learning to say "no" helps you focus on what really matters. What can you let go of to make more room for what's important? Guest Bio Jadah Sellner is a bestselling author, business coach, international keynote speaker, TEDx presenter, poet, and host of the Lead with Love® podcast. She's the author of SHE BUILDS: The Anti-Hustle Guide to Grow Your Business and Nourish Your Life. I'm so excited to talk with Jadah Sellner, author of She Builds, about slowing down, avoiding burnout, and still reaching your goals.Jadah says one of her superpowers is being connected with what matters most in any given moment. Often times there are things we say matter — family game night, healthy meals, a break. Pick one thing, and schedule it. Put it in your calendar. If it's a thing you want to happen again and again, like game night, schedule a month of it (or more). Hold that time for what you believe matters, before anyone else claims it.MAKE A SELF-CARE MENU. Everyone, I've got a secret I want to share with you: Hustle culture doesn't work for women. I know, I know, who would've thought, right? Simply scroll through entrepreneur TikTok or your Instagram reels, and you'll be bombarded with videos of people telling you you need to work more, hustle more, sleep less, and, under all of that… enjoy life less. Because, let's be honest, if you're always hustling, then you don't really have time to enjoy yourself, take a nice warm bath to relax, play with your children, or spend quality time with your spouse, your friends, or your family. Women are always told they're not doing enough.  But enough is enough (yes, I am putting. my. foot. down.) We can have it all, even if we don't spend all of our lives praying at the hustle altar. Someone who is the embodiment of this (and who has achieved sooooo many things without having to sacrifice her soul to hustle culture) is this week's guest on the I Heart Life podcast, the brilliant Jadah Sellner. Jadah is a brilliant business woman and the author of She Builds. All of Jadah's entrepreneurial work is built on one single idea: Sustainable leadership. What is it? Why does it matter? These are a few of the questions she answers in this episode. Listen in as she and I discuss this and more, such as her book, why she rejects hustle culture, and how you can achieve everything you put your mind to while avoiding burnout. Are you ready? Let's dive in!   In This Episode: [00:00] Introduction [01:19] Jadah shares with us her big turning point [10:29] The change after the realization [22:23] Why Jadah procrastinated writing her book She Builds [29:22] The warning signs that hustle is crushing you [42:23] Jadah shares more about her daycare living situation story [45:02] Who inspires Jadah to make changes in her life [51:42] All you need is ten seconds of bravery   Quotes: “Hustle is a season, it's not a lifestyle. So if that becomes your every day, then there is a mismatch.” – Jadah Sellner “We're living in this male dominated culture; it wasn't that long ago that women were kind of the domestic caretakers of the home, taking care of the family, and the men would be at work, and then they're also the ones that have been the entrepreneurs. And so it's very new for women to not only be working outside of the home, but also to build their own economy, to build their own business. And the hustle culture, this male dominated narrative, has made us feel like we are not doing enough, we're not smart enough, we're not making enough.” – Jadah Sellner “Building a business that compromises your health and relationships is not a sustainable business model.” – Jadah Sellner “With Simple Green Smoothies, I knew my heart was being called in a different direction. And so I was actually not only experiencing this physical burnout, but I was also experiencing this mental burnout because I was misaligned with my truth.” – Jadah Sellner “I'm a builder. I'm a creator. I always say that I'm an artist first and a business owner second. I wanted to share with more people about the behind the scenes of building a business and also what it means to build a business when you are a mom, when you are taking on more caregiving responsibilities. And I was more passionate talking about the behind the scenes of how we did what we did than about talking about the health benefits of chia seeds.” – Jadah Sellner “I think for ambitious women, we have a vision, we have a dream, we have projects and goals, and then we hit them and we plateau because we haven't expanded what is possible for us or what is it that we're wanting to learn or how we're wanting to grow next. So that's why I think it's important for us to keep connecting to ‘What's that next level vision?'” – Jadah Sellner   Links & Resources: Ready to Uplevel Your Life? In this podcast episode, I'm sharing my honest experiences of what I'm calling the current "Crisis of Confidence" among female business owners, grappling with the conflicting marketing messages, false promises, and broken systems that have left them feeling paralyzed and uncertain who they can trust to help them move forward. This crisis is a result of the mass confusion and hysteria caused by the false promises of success in business ownership, the lack of funding and business loans, the exhaustion of keeping up with marketing messages, the difficulty of consistently creating quality content, and the distrust of female business coaches, consultants, and course creators. A no-BS approach and trusting in one's own inner wisdom is important in order to have a successful, sustainable business."If you have been duped, taken advantage of, lied to, really screwed over by a female coach or consultant or course creator, I am deeply sorry that you experienced that. You can build a successful business around your art and creative work without sacrificing what matters to you. Relationships, time for yourself, and space for creativity don't need to be lost to hustle culture and burnout.  My guest today, Jadah Sellner, has built several successful companies and has experienced the burnout that is not sustainable. Now she helps women unleash their creativity, intuition and purpose through her books, her podcast, and coaching.   In this episode, we're sharing just a few of the many golden lessons Jadah has in her latest book called She Builds. She values allowing yourself to follow your own intuitive path to create and build your own meaningful life.  “ Give ourselves permission to build a business from a place of love.” -Jadah Sellner  Lessons we discuss from Jadah's book:  Move from strictly obsessive passion into a harmonious passion to avoid burnout  Toxic productivity and that constant feel of not enoughness are signs to slow down 3 kinds of mastermind support group buckets you need to excel in your journey Writing a letter to your future yourself is meant to set the vision and intention   There are so many more lessons we didn't have the time to cover. She shares her wisdom and insights into things like high functioning anxiety, the cycle of fear, having calendar bodyguards and more in her book. The narrative around hustle culture is that it's sexy and something to strive for and wear like a badge of honor. Jadah is breaking that narrative apart and refocusing on how to create a fuller, more meaningful life with room for success and love.  “Make space and time to dream about what it is that you want to create.” - Jadah Sellner  Connect with Jadah Sellner:  Website  Instagram  For full show notes go to schulmanart.com/234 ++++++++++++++++++++

He has represented a wide range of bestselling fiction and nonfiction projects that have generated in excess of $50 Million for their authors, including  Andy Weir, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Martian, which was turned into the Golden Globe winning film starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott, Artemis, and Project Hail Mary, currently in development to become a film starring Ryan Gosling.  He also represents authors Chris Guillebeau, author of the New York Times bestselling The $100 Startup, Side Hustle, and The Happiness of Pursuit; Vanessa Van Edwards, author of the Wall Street Journal bestsellers Captivate and Cues; Megan Devine, author of the 300,000+ copy selling It's Ok That You're Not Ok; Jadah Sellner (that's me!), author of She Builds with Harper Business, and many others. What you'll hear (and don't want to miss!): :: What David sees as being the most challenging parts of the book publishing process for authors launching a book :: The key characteristics an author needs to manage the book writing journey successfully :: How the clientele he represents has evolved over the years, and why he says that he doesn't necessarily follow trends :: His best advice for someone thinking about publishing a book :: Tips and strategies for the launch phase of getting a book out into the world  You can find the full show notes from this episode over at jadahsellner.com/194 My new book She Builds: The Anti-Hustle Guide to Grow Your Business and Nourish Your Life is available now! Can magic strike twice? As we learn in this episode, it most certainly can. Charlie welcomes Jadah Sellner, best-selling author, business coach, and the host of the Lead with Love podcast. Jadah shares wisdom from her own experience of going from the “green smoothie girl” to an anti-hustle and pro-sustainable leadership business coach. Jadah talks more about her #shebuilds movement, which helps founders build sustainable businesses without burnout, some tips on moving forward when you feel like you've outgrown your current situation, and how we can apply anti-hustle productivity in our personal and professional lives. Jadah and Charlie talk about their creative process of book writing, moving from fear to love, and how we can define our “enough” to move through the world more intentionally.Key Takeaways:[3:41] Jadah talks about co-founding Simple Green Smoothies with her then-business partner Jen, and the interesting journey to have the conscious uncoupling not only with a business partner but with an identity of a body of work that she built.[5:20] Can magic strike twice? The answer is yes.[5:58] What should you do when you feel stuck in a pattern, yet your heart and soul call you in a new direction?[10:08] Sometimes we need separation to rebuild on our own and find our way.[10:52] Jadah shares a few people and situations that helped her create her own skill set and tools to pull from in her current life.[11:13] How is She Builds different from anything Jadah has done before?[12:17] Pay attention to where your natural curiosity and interest lie.[14:31] Jadah is an immersive creator, and she talks about giving herself the space to process and creatively cocoon while she is going through the process of creative writing and output.[17:41] Things flow much more easily when we embrace the fact that each project brings a new creative process.[23:15] The core message behind She Builds is that hustle culture isn't working for women.[32:51] Sometimes advocating for yourself also means having to push back deadlines and be honest with yourself and others that things may not happen on the exact day you plan for them to happen.[38:55] How can we move from fear to love? Jadah breaks down her definition of “L.O.V.E.”: lead, optimize, visualize, and expand.[41:23] In a world where your to-do list can be a bottomless mimosa, it's important to have an intentional and practical relationship with your to-do list.[48:47] Jadah's growth edge now is being in a creative process with her book.[50:43] Jadah's challenge: define your “enough” number. It is personal for everyone and can help move you out of hustle culture.Mentioned in this episode:Productive FlourishingStart Finishing: How to Go from Idea to Done, by Charlie GilkeyThe AcademyMomentum AppJadah Sellner@jadahsellnerLead with Love PodcastShe Builds: The Anti-Hustle Guide to Grow Your Business and Nourish Your LifeElizabeth GilbertNeil GaimanToni Morrison

Hustle. Grind. Boss up. Do more. Love them or hate them, these words are embedded into the ways we think about work and entrepreneurship. Jadah Sellner, along with a co-founder, took the business “Simple Green Smoothies” to six- and seven-figure success. But although their work was built on love, fun, creativity, and connection, they gradually lost sight of why they built their business and were soon overly focused on metrics. This all came at a high cost to their relationships, health, and families. It took Jadah selling her half of the company in order to heal, redefine her ambition, and decide where she was willing to put her energy. Taking this step back helped her find a different way to build a business, which is where the inspiration for her book, She Builds, came from. •     I just got done giving a speech at the Grow Tech Fest, at the Sierra Nevada Big Room in Chico. I've honestly had three of the roughest days that I've had in a while, my husband ended up in the ER locally, and then we had to go down to UC Davis to get him into the emergency room there because there's just no quick way to fix somebody's back that possibly needs surgery. And so we spent 30 hours in the emergency room, and then last night we finally got him admitted to the hospital and we just sat down and I said, Baby, I made this commitment to do this speech, I had been prepping for it for the last couple of months, I spent a lot of time on my Google slides that I actually created in Canva, practicing my speech, and I just really felt this pull of... Do I go? Honey, do I go do this commitment that I said I would... Because I don't feel comfortable leaving you. When he was in the emergency room, there was really no advocate for him, and I really wouldn't have left if he was still in the emergency room. But once we got him admitted to the hospital, he had people actually treating him like a human and caring for him, and we we're just waiting for the Neurosurgeon. And even in the midst of my husband's serious pain, and lying in the hospital, he's like, Go. You need to go. You have to go. You need to do this. You've been prepping for this. You need to go. And just the level of his selflessness and his level of commitment to me, to encourage me to do things that are scary to me that he knows that I will be good at, he was like, go. And it was like everything in me, to just even leave. (00:30) •    My daughter was like, Momma, but your anniversary, you're supposed to go to Hawaii or spend some time, and I go, Baby, don't worry, there's going to be so many more anniversaries for your daddy and I that, it's okay. Like, it's okay, we have each other and we love each other, and it's okay. And it was just a testament to our marriage and our commitment to each other, and we're not perfect, nothing's been perfect, we have a hard history, and a man, we've come really far. My level of commitment to him in this emergency situation, and then his level of commitment to me, and just encouraging me to do the speech. So I went to the Grow Tech Fest, which I really didn't know that much about it. Because my commitment this year to myself was if there was an opportunity that stretched me, that made me feel uncomfortable, that I was going to say yes. And it's really completely put me out of my comfort zone because... You know, I'm introverted, and speaking in front of the people makes me nervous, and being around a lot of people and having to talk about myself makes me extremely nervous. It makes me like barfey, I don't want to do it. But I also know that I'm going to encourage somebody and it's really not about me, it's not about how it makes me feel, it's not about any of that, it's about the people that I could potentially inspire or encourage. (03:26) •    When you become as She Builds client, you get to download your owner's portal from either your computer or your phone, you get to access the schedule, you could just see everything that we're doing. You could to look at the daily logs, which is like a requirement in our business that every client gets three daily logs per week, where they get photos uploaded in the description of what's going on in their project every few days, and they can comment on it. They can communicate with their project manager, their invoices are uploading there, and we really do use technology to make the service to the client so incredible. And that was the technology piece I was really trying to bring into my presentation. Then afterwards, after everybody went, which, these guys were just so smart and made the most incredible things, I was so impressed by them. They were like, Okay, we're going to vote and judge you, and we're going to give a prize to the winner, and I'm like, Oh my gosh, can I just leave now? That's literally how I felt. Can I just leave now? I don't want to know who wins because I'm a very sore loser and I had no idea this was a competition. so all the investors are huddling around the table, and they were deciding who was going to win. And they go, Okay, we're all done. And they start to announce it and they say they just want to give the person the award who gave the best story, who gave the best presentation, and they called my name and you guys... I don't know the last time I won anything, I think after you get out of elementary school, high school, you just don't get ribbons or awards anymore, and I got an award for the best presentation. (06:55) •    I was able to take that nugget of information from Brooke's teachings, because normally, I wouldn't have handled it that way. I just would have been swallowed up, swallowed up and consumed by all the things. It's just too much, it's just too much. It really is too much. Like my daughter called me crying yesterday because she hadn't seen mommy and daddy in three days, because we're down two hours away, it's just too much and... Yes, have you, I broke down a couple of times and had a really good cry, but I also know that we're going to be okay, it's not anything that we can't fix and move forward. And I'm just so proud of that shift in my mind, because normally I just would have swallowed up into bed and cried myself to sleep and not dealt with it. And so I just want to encourage you today, that really, it's your mindset. That changes the way you look at your circumstances. And if I could encourage you to do anything, it would be to listen to Brooke Castillo's podcast, she really teaches you how to look and think about your circumstances differently, and feel about your thoughts differently. And it is just like a work I'm going to be committed to the rest of my life, because I really think everything that we want to achieve to be, comes from the source of how you think and how you feel about what you think, and how you act about what you feel, and the results come from how you act. But it all trails back to you think. There's a gap in the industry. Few people are doing more to fill that gap than Lydia Burns.  Lydia is known as a senior manager with Allied Construction Industries, a trade group that works on advocacy, networking, and solutions for a variety of parties within the construction industry. Last time we met with Lydia, we discussed her work with K-12 programs that familiarize students with various aspects of construction. Today, we talk about her ambitious work with Shebuilds a division of ACI that focuses on increasing the number of women in the construction industry. Only 9% of the skilled trade workers within the construction industry are female. This under-representation is the result of everything from corporate hiring practices to parents' messages to their children. Lydia and the She Builds team work strategically to increase construction interest among women. Here are a few things they do: Address specific reasons that high school girls give for not pursuing a career in construction, Address academic concerns (particularly math), Recruit and train adult women who are shifting careers, Work with everyone from students to executives in an effort to break down stereotypes.   We ask Lydia how guys in construction make the field more appealing to women. Here are some of her thoughts: Avoid offering them help unless they clearly need it. Shut down your inner diner waitress. In other words, don't call them “honey” or “sweetie.” Talk to women in the industry and ask them for ideas.   Papa Eddie (father of three girls) raises a few concerns. Lydia (second of three daughters) addresses them: Empower your daughter. If you see that she has STEM skills and interest, foster that interest. Remind yourself that there is a diverse range of jobs within the construction industry–and not all of them involve carrying bundles of shingles up a ladder. Seek to increase the possibilities rather than reduce them. Involve them in your construction projects–both around the house and at work.    Lydia's megaphone (her second time): Start having the conversation in your company and your area. Women can do this work. We're out there.  Learn more about Lydia and her company: Lydia's LinkedIn -  ACI - She Builds Find Us Online: BrosPodcast.com - LinkedIn - Instagram - Facebook - Eddie's LinkedIn - Tyler's LinkedIn If you enjoy the podcast, please rate us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to us! •   You cannot eat healthy three days a week and expect to look and feel how you want. You cannot work on your business one day a month and expect to meet your goals. You cannot create that invention that you have dreamt about, by only dreaming about it. You cannot write the book if you don't start with the commitment to write one page per day. Discipline over time is how your vision comes to life. My vision, I want to change the construction industry, I want women on a job site to be... No big freaking deal. I want every woman who was like me, that likes to get her hands dirty, that likes to work hard, that has never really fit in with the girly girls, to find a beautiful home in the construction industry. I no longer want construction to be a place where customers get the short end of the stick. I want people who we work for to feel listened to, to be communicated with and to enjoy the process of their remodel or their new home build. I want the door opened, so so many women can walk through it, and they are welcomed with open arms.  (04:24)•   So I've ran a lot of businesses and I've done a lot of stuff that had no meaning to me, but made me a lot of money. This time though, with She Builds... I needed that to be different. I want to inspire, I want to encourage, I want to physically be the woman opening the door for the rest to walk through, I love people, I love real conversations, and I love helping you believe in yourself. I mean, don't ever come up to me and be like, Hey, how's the weather? Because I'm out, unless we're talking about real stuff, I get weird and I leave. If you have a vision, here's what I would tell you, first, write it down, make a poster, go to Michaels, get some poster board, get a white board, write it in large letters and put it on your wall where you will see it every day. Then I just want you to leave it there. Then, I want you to go to work on your discipline, if you are serious about achieving that vision, you need to grow your discipline.  (6:50)•  Discipline is a muscle. The more you say no to the temptation, the stronger and easier it is to continue. Start small. When you want to grow this muscle bigger than ever, then read The 5 AM Club and do the challenge. I mean really DO IT! Really do something different. What you're doing now is not working. You're just drifting through life and girl, you are meant for more. Develop your discipline, strengthen the muscle. Then when you are strong and wild on your vision, commit to it, stay the course and believe in yourself. You, my friend, are incredible, and we all have the power within us to build something life-changing.(08:13) WAYS TO CONNECT WITH STEFANIE…• Website: https://shebuildshomes.com• Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shebuildsbetter• Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shebuilds.homes• YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/shebuildsshow

Welcome back to the She's Wild Podcast! I am so excited to introduce you all to Taya Cook and Sherry Larjani. Taya Cook is the Director of Development at Urban Capital where she has played a lead role in developing condominium projects and seeing them through to completion across Canada. Sherry Larjani is an experienced real estate developer and entrepreneur, who's main focus is to create beautifully designed spaces that bring her visions to life. Sherry is the President and founder of her own real estate development firm, Spotlight Development Inc.On today's episode of She's Wild, I sit down with Taya Cook and Sherry Larjani to discuss their 9-story, 200-unit, condominium project, Reina. Sherry and Taya are inspiring female leaders in the real estate industry who have managed to carve out their own niche, despite being surrounded by males. These amazing ladies share stories throughout their careers that helped to inspire them to form the first, all-female development team in Canada to build the Reina condo project in Toronto, Ontario. Reina, named after the Spanish word for “queen,” is about leading women building a better condo by doing things differently — through community collaboration, new perspectives, and a commitment to multigenerational living.I loved sitting down with these ladies and can't wait for you to hear the entire episode! Memorable Moments: 7:22- Sherry L: “I wanted to show everyone on the site working with me that I can be just like them. I am an equal. I am willing to do the hard work, or pick up that piece of metal, or wood, or drywall, or whatever the case is.”9:08- Taya C:  “I think being a woman working in this industry for so many years to not have one woman who's at the top, or is highlighted in such an obvious way, it was upsetting, it was really upsetting.”11:12- Taya C: “I think a lot of people look at the industry and say, “Oh, now there's lots of women who work in it.” But when you actually look at the leadership, roles and positions, there really isn't. And the people who are making decisions on these huge projects, typically, it's a roomful of men.”22:08- Sherry L:  “I think we carried that throughout the project, even sitting around the table, all of the consultants, if they had something to say, we were willing to hear it. And you know, it wasn't just a saying. We actually paid attention and tried to see how we could incorporate it into our design.”23:33- Taya C: “I could ramble on for like an hour of all the details. But I think the main thing for the building was that it would be a space where it was accommodating to all age groups and to families specifically.” 26:20- Sherry L: “You have to have confidence in your own abilities, whatever those are, whatever you're good at, because if you don't have that confidence, and if you're lacking it, you can't sit at a table and prove a point, because if you can't talk the talk, nobody's going to take you seriously. And if you don't have the confidence, then you won't be able to carry a conversation and answer questions.” 29:14- Taya C: “Because especially most of us who, you know, are not going to put ourselves in risky positions are not going to really put ourselves out there. We can really afford to put ourselves out there at least a little bit more, and just go for something instead of just waiting until we're 100% sure it's the right decision.” Connect with Taya Cook:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/taya.cook17/Linked In: www.linkedin.com/in/taya-cook-55382b32/Website: http://www.urbancapital.ca/Connect with Sherry Larjani: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/slarjani/Linked In: www.linkedin.com/in/sherry-larjani-37644949/Website: https://www.spotlightdevelopment.com/Learn more about their project Reina: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reinacondos/Websites: https://www.reinacondos.com/https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/12/business/women-real-estate-development.htmlhttps://www.oprahdaily.com/life/a31789120/8-trailblazers-who-are-creating-game-changing-opportunities-for-all-women/https://www.reminetwork.com/articles/eight-women-transforming-canada-multi-residential/Connect with Nancy: Instagram: https://instagram.com/nancysurakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancysurak/Website: www.nancysurak.comShe's WILD Sound Production by:Luke Surak, Surak Productions: surakproductions@gmail.com

•  My truest love is horses, so I'm a throw and through cowgirl, I wear Cowgirl boots every day, and my idea of style is to pick up yesterday's clothes and give it a big whiff to see if it's still clean, this is partially out of survival and the fact that I have really grown and matured and take into the idea that how we look and how I dress no longer consumes me, I am me, and I like how I was created. (1:11)•  I've been married for 10 amazing years to a husband has truly taught me the real definition of kindness, sacrifice, selflessness and unconditional love, it's definitely not a perfect life, but when I choose gratitude for daily. So growing up, my father ran his own accounting practice, he's a CPA, I'm extremely detail-oriented, and he ended up encouraging me to help him a lot growing up. I went to school actually to be a teacher, honestly, because I wasn't sure what else to choose. I wish they wouldn't make you choose a career path until you were at least 30, because I had no idea what I wanted to do at 18. So I taught for a year, I figured out it wasn't for me, and then I decided to work with my pops at the accounting firm, but I didn't have the credentials to do that, so dad made me write up a business plan presented to him on how I would accomplish getting my license, and then he would consider making me a partner, I got married, became pregnant with our first sweet little girl. (2:54)•  I had time during the summer months to be creative with what I wanted to do, real estate really had drawn in my interest. We bought our first flip in about 2011, and that snowballed into about 100 flips over the next five years, as well as getting my real estate license. That all sounds really easy to say, but it was a crap ton of work from there, I bought a piece of ground that needed to be sub-divided and I built four houses on it, that blossomed into a relationship with a local developer and contractor that had asked me to be a part of our team. We, together, built about 80 new construction homes over the last five or six years. Now a while back, those guys who I had the pleasure of learning from and being taught so much information, they told me they wanted to slow down, I kind of freaked and knew I didn't wanted to go find another contractor, what is a woman to do? Get er done. (4:25)•  I got my general contractor license, and while that should pretty much sum up where we are current day. So, getting my licence really sprouted a new dream for me, a dream where women do hard things and support each other, where women get encouraged and step into industries that history may have told them in the past that they don't belong. Then She Builds was born. To me, She Builds is a place where women step into undefined roles, where women feel empowered to reach beyond their day-to-day life and achieve what they only dreamt about. Women's potential and dreams will not be stagnant here, their voices will be heard and ideas counted. The podcast was started by three friends who, after graduating from architecture school together, wanted to fill in the gaps in their education and share those with others. Jessica Rogers is a Miami native that now resides in Washington D.C, working at the AIA National Headquarters. Jessica attended Design and Architecture Senior High, a magnet art school in the design district of Miami. She earned her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Syracuse University, where she also served as treasurer and historian for her NOMAS chapter. At the AIA, she manages and develops programming and resources for emerging professionals and women in the profession. She is passionate about helping others succeed, elevating the voices of those underrepresented, and creating a more equitable profession. Outside of work, she continues this charge as the co-host of She Builds Podcast, elevating women in the AEC industry through storytelling. Elizabeth Raar (Lizi) is a licensed Project Architect, originally from West Michigan, who graduated from Syracuse University. Currently she works for Polsky Perlstein Architects in Marin County, California on single-family residential projects. She enjoys making a project functional yet beautiful for the client.  Elizabeth is also committed to promoting women in the AEC profession through co-hosting She Builds Podcast . On the podcast, they feature stories of women in history who have shaped the built environment and industry. Elizabeth loves sharing stories of women who haven't been showcased in the past, in the hopes that women will play a more equal part in future architectural history. Norgerie Rivas is an Architectural Associate from Puerto Rico who graduated from Syracuse University, where she served in the council of the Architecture Students Organization. Today she works for eStudio Architecture in Houston, Texas. There she has worked on commercial, healthcare, aviation, and retail architecture projects from design through construction.  She is passionate about celebrating and elevating women in her field through mentorship and advocacy. This led to her co-founding and co-hosting She Builds Podcast , featuring the stories of women who have shaped the industries of building design and construction through history and today. Norgerie hopes to share the stories of women in the AEC industry and to inspire future, new, and experienced people in the profession.
