Tim Shriver has spent a lifetime learning to see the people the rest of us are socialized to look past. The chairman of Special Olympics, co-creator of the Dignity Index, and son of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver, he argues that what's tearing America apart isn't how much we differ, but how we treat one another when we do. "We're not being torn apart by difference. We're being torn apart by the way we treat each other when we differ." In this episode with Mark Labberton, Shriver reflects on the teachers who shaped him—students and athletes who taught him a different way of seeing. They discuss the Dignity Index, contempt, toxic empathy that gives way to excusing harm, the role of "self-purification" in Martin Luther King Jr.'s non-violent campaigns, his Catholic faith, and the embracing the Eucharist as self-giving love. Episode Highlights "We're not being torn apart by difference. We're being torn apart by the way we treat each other when we differ." "Empathy is knowing and understanding. Dignity is valuing and seeing." "You will have a superpower if you fight for your principles with all the passion you've got and add one principle: treat the other human being with dignity at the same time." "They're not crying because they're sad for the athlete. They're crying because something is coming out of them." "Concretely, you may hold, you may touch, you may drink of the face of God." About Tim Shriver Timothy Shriver has chaired Special Olympics International since 1996, growing the movement to over four million athletes worldwide. The third child of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver, he taught for years in New Haven public schools and helped launch the field of social and emotional learning, co-founding and chairing CASEL. In 2018 he founded UNITE to bridge America's political divides and co-created the Dignity Index, an eight-point scale from contempt to respect. Democracy works best when everyone can participate—and that starts with making sure every eligible voter can cast a ballot. At this BigTentUSA TentTalk held on June 9, VoteRiders' Sylvester Johnson III joined activist and organizer Jess Craven for a practical conversation about one of the biggest barriers to voting: voter ID requirements. Johnson explained that more than 34 million voting-age Americans lack a current government-issued ID, while 38 states require identification to vote. He outlined how VoteRiders helps voters navigate often confusing state rules, obtain supporting documents such as birth certificates, secure transportation to ID offices, and successfully complete the process from start to finish. The discussion also explored broader threats to voter participation, strategies for increasing turnout, and the importance of grassroots engagement. Attendees learned how simple actions—letter writing, texting, sharing information, and helping neighbors prepare to vote—can make a measurable difference. The takeaway was clear: Whether you live in a battleground state or not, there are concrete ways to help ensure every eligible voter can make their voice heard.Learn more about VoteRiders:https://voteriders.org/ Check out Jessica's newsletter “Chop Wood, Carry Water”:https://chopwoodcarrywaterdailyactions.substack.com/ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:Sylvester Johnson III serves as the Voter Outreach & Data Manager for VoteRiders. The Polar Plunge in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a cold-water swimming event to raise funds for Special Olympics. This past winter they had to cancel the Polar Plunge because the temperature was too cold to have people try to participate in the plunge. Instead, they tried to find some other way to raise money and the people participating were told to “stay home, stay warm, and stay safe. I'm not sure what the temperature in the water would need to be to be too much for the polar bears or for humans. Today, instead of doing something extremely dangerous, give generously to some organization like Special Olympics that's making a difference in the world. Your money will go just as far whether you take a Polar Plunge or if you just stay safe and give. Be a giver today.

Send us Fan MailThe worst part of an autism diagnosis is not the word itself. It is the silence that can follow when you do not know where to go, what to trust, or who will truly understand your day to day life. We talk with Karen Simmons about that exact moment and the long road after it, from early parenting chaos to building reliable autism resources that help families feel less alone. We get into why “future tellers” can be so damaging, how a strengths based approach changes everything, and what it looks like to create autism education that is actually usable for parents, teachers, and siblings. Karen shares the story behind Autism Today, the need for a safe place to belong, and why real community is built through clear information, lived experience, and generous referrals. We also dig into the Autism Directory concept as a modern hub where parents, professionals, clinics, educators, podcasts, and even autistic creators can be found without the needle in a haystack search.Along the way, we share personal milestones that hit differently, like Special Olympics pride and the kind of joy that comes when a teen proves the experts wrong. You will hear a powerful reminder that progress can show up through alternative communication, early literacy, and passion driven work, including a YouTube channel that becomes a first paycheck. If you care about neurodiversity, autism support, inclusive communities, and practical tools for real life, listen now.
