Tom welcomes returning guest Justin Huhn to the program to talk about everything uranium-related. Justin discusses prominent voices advocating for nuclear energy and why it helps the industry. Recent developments around holding physical uranium by other companies and ETF's is very encouraging. The fact that Denison is buying and storing uranium at a premium is good news for the market. A lot of liquidity is now trending into the uranium sector. Justin discusses the supply situation for uranium and how some long-running mines are now coming offline. Closures are a reasonably big deal since it reduces the diversity of market sources. The bulk of supply comes from Kazakhstan, and currently, Cameco in Canada is producing zero pounds. Small amounts are coming from Namibia, Uzbekistan, and Australia. Overall, supply is tight, fragile, and past 2025 quite uncertain. Uranium equities have been rallying, and it seems like small investors are getting ready for a wave of big money to enter the market. There is a long way to go in terms of valuations in the sector. China is expanding and is a huge growth area for this market. There is a growing understanding of this sector, and we are in a much different environment than in 2007. Capital markets have changed, and we will likely break the previous market cap. We will probably overshoot during this bull market, but who knows what the height will be. He explains how SWU prices work in relationship with enrichment and why it indicates a decline in secondary supply. So far, the Biden administration seems supportive of nuclear as a form of clean energy. This market has fundamentally changed since December; this is not just retail chasing small moves. Real money that appears to be smart has come into space. It's just a matter of time before this market gets squeezed. Maybe a few. Talk about procrastination! In this episode, which is the last episode of Season 1, I discuss what I learned in 2020 about procrastination and how I can manage it best. Remember: when trying to find out how to stop yourself from procrastinating or how to minimize how much procrastination you do, it's important to keep in mind that it's got to be tailored to your personal needs. For my part, here is the solution that I was able to come up with to stop procrastinating (or, at the very least, manage it so that it isn't entirely impossible to work with). This episode was recorded and edited on December 25, 2020. Let's just say, my procrastination management solution isn't entirely perfect. But hey, what is? Moving into 2021, I'm hoping to find even more effective ways to manage my procrastination. I hope you enjoy this episode! Don't forget to subscribe to my newsletter to get subscriber-exclusive updates and goodies in your inbox once a month. You can also connect with me on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, or by just saying hello over on my blog. Until Season 2, my friends! --- --- --- TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: "I recently learned that there are different kinds of procrastinators. There are those that procrastinate because they think they work better with that last-minute pressure. There are those that are essentially workaholics who feel bad when they aren't doing anything, which makes them think that they're being lazy and procrastinating. There are those who like to give themselves a schedule and calendar jam-packed with things to do, so that they can procrastinate safely with the excuse that they just have so much to do and cannot work on that thing that they're avoiding! And there are those who like to procrastinate by looking for new things to do, like starting new projects. I think I've experienced some form of all of these, but the one I relate with the most is the last type of procrastinator. Now, I have mentioned before that I'm juggling dozens of projects. I'm not exaggerating; this is very, very true! I have about 36 projects that are in the works, last time I counted them all up. One of the reasons for this is that Shiny Object Syndrome - I procrastinate on one project by working on or starting another. For a very long time, I jumped from one to the other and just worked on whichever one I felt like working on - and sometimes made new story ideas when I didn't feel like working on any of the projects I already had. But last summer I decided to put my foot down and work out some solution to this, and my solution was very simple." If you have comments, suggestions, questions - find me on Instagram, Twitter, my blog. You can also subscribe to my newsletter to keep updated with my works and news. Thanks for tuning in for this episode! Next episode - our last episode of the season (and the year!) - I'll be talking about procrastination and how I've learned to deal with that tricky little devil. Until next time! TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: "As authors, our productivity is often measured through the number of words we write. If you haven't written anything, you haven't been productive. But that's not altogether true. If you've thought about new plot points, if you've discussed your story with someone, if you jotted down some ideas - any of that falls under writing productivity. I wanted to get that out of the way because I'm actually interested in this episode in talking about the lessons I've learned this year about the specific ways in which we perceive productivity levels - our own and other people's - and how that perception doesn't always have to align with the reality in order for us to be productive. I'll start by saying that by being online we are exposed to a number of figures that seem to us so productive we can't help but wonder how in the world they've gotten to that stage. For example, I used to follow a blogger who made new art almost every other day and who has a range of books and always new excerpts to share, and who on top of that managed an online writing community and held down a full-time job and volunteered and so much more! I also followed another author who completed a book every 2 months. My mind was boggled. I remember thinking: How is it even humanly and physically possible that they're so productive? And why can't I be that productive? What am I missing? For a while I thought I was simply missing the discipline and the dedication. To be fair, I do think I can work on my self-discipline, but this year, after writing and posting over 80 blog posts and recording and uploading over 24 podcast episodes (among other things), I realized that it wasn't just about that. Instead, I've realized that it's about timing and intention. Let me break down what I mean by those two things." Until July 15, 2021, you can grab free copy of Apartment by filling out this survey on enhanced ebooks to help me out with some academic research. In which I discuss the issue of instant gratification for authors using social media and sharing their writing online. If you have comments, questions, or requests, find me in Instagram, Twitter, and my blog. Subscribe to my newsletter to keep updated and get subscriber exclusives! Apartment, my debut novella, comes out January 5, 2021. Why not grab yourself a copy of the ebook when it comes out? Thanks for tuning in. Until next time! TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: Writing like this is unhealthy - and it slows you down. Instant gratification from social media is nice, but that's really all it is. In fact, the more I learn about social media, the more I realize that all social media platforms need to be approached with discipline and a plan. I've also realized that you can't stick around on some social media platforms forever, depending on the community and culture on those platforms. Sometimes, you simply need to be elsewhere in order to continue growing, and you need to be able to recognize that and plan for it. What I started to realize was that I didn't write for myself anymore. I wasn't internally motivated anymore, and all my reward and validation came from external sources rather than what I originally felt, which was that internal drive to keep going and that internal happiness that stemmed from writing something I was proud of. Instead, I wrote and made content for people to instantly enjoy and that was my reward. And that creates a bit of a vicious cycle. Not only did social media start to pull me away from my writing, but it also switched my focus into writing for that specific audience that I had at the time. And while that's nice, it wasn't my original plan, and still isn't my plan right now. That's why this year, I've made a lot of social media changes. So, that's the first lesson that I learned this year. Just: Be able to write without instant gratification or reward from external sources. You can give yourself your own reward system, like celebrating finishing a chapter or finishing a book, but don't make it so that you need external validation to feel good about your writing. And don't get so immersed in social media that you forget why you started writing in the first place. Since toning down my social media presence, I've started to get back into writing for myself, to make myself happy with what I write, and it's healthier and easier to write in this way. That doesn't mean my audience isn't in my mind when I write - far from it! It just means that I'm not going to be influenced by or exposed to this vicious cycle of instant gratification anymore, and that I've decided that I refuse to be chained to social media all day, every day. In other words, I've started to value my time and my efforts more than I did before, and that has made it clear to me that I need to prioritize and know pursue my actual goals. Tom welcomes returning guest Justin Huhn to the program to talk about everything uranium related. Justin discusses the very long base that has been built for uranium and why recent moves in uranium equities are a good sign. There has been a supply shortfall for a couple of years since MacArthur River was shut down, and this year Covid has exacerbated that situation. The bulk of secondary supply comes from underfeeding in the enrichment process when there is excess capacity. This supply will slowly diminish once primary demand increases. This rally is different since it's based on sentiment instead of seasonal factors or just mine closures. Institutional money is now catching wind of the sector. Justin discusses how a recent report has garnered the attention of both these institutions and investors. He discusses why the Cigar Lake Mine shut down and how much longer he expects this to continue. There are around 175 million pounds of uranium consumed globally and typically 150 million pounds of supply. This shortfall in recent years has been made up for by secondary supply. Utilities have yet to buy much, but eventually, they will enter into long-term contracts. Justin outlines the numbers of reactors that are being built and when they should come online. He says, "Nuclear is expected to be an ongoing growth industry." He discusses the different ways to invest in uranium and what he looks for within the uranium space. The URNM ETF may be a good way for investors to gain exposure to the sector. He expects 2021 to be an excellent year for uranium. In which I discuss the elephant I am currently trying to eat, as well as possible future elephants I may want to eat. To learn more about why I'm self-publishing Apartment, check out my blog post here. You can find me via Twitter, IG, Tumblr, and my blog. Disclaimer: I am not an expert on self-publishing or traditional publishing! I'm merely speaking based on the little experience I have and am currently having, as well as what I've learned from my months and months of research online. Thanks for tuning in! TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: Personally, I lean more towards self-publishing for various reasons. In fact, I actually wrote a blog post about why I'm self-publishing Apartment, which I'll link in the episode details. Most importantly, I get to keep total control of how my books are presented, advertised, marketed, where they're published, how much they cost, and so on and so forth. That's really important to me. Having that control will allow me much more flexibility as well, since there are a lot of decisions that aren't up to you if you go with a traditional publisher. For example, the book cover is probably in large part going to be a result of marketing research on what kinds of covers are most popular in a particular genre and for a particular audience. Where the book is sold - in which bookstores, for example - is also up to your traditional publisher, as well as how much it costs. But self-publishing is a monumental task, and over the years I've realized that it's a full-time job, no doubt about it. You're in charge or everything with self-publishing, and the tasks really seem to add up into this mountain of things that need doing, and it is intimidating. These days, I won't lie - I have really been feeling that colossal amount of work! But we'll keep this episode more theoretical, because I'm planning on making another episode in the future, after the launch of Apartment, discussing my experience in more detail and lessons learned. So, let's just talk about self-publishing in general and what it takes. Here are just some of the steps that I've learned about, and I'm going to list them all but I'm sure it's not an exhaustive list, and I'm also sure that depending on the choices an author makes, some of these things could potentially be ignored. Of course, you have to write the story. Then you'll need to edit it - and it's up to you whether you'll be hiring a professional editor to do that or if you'd rather self-edit. If you'd like to give it a test run with beta readers to get feedback, then that's an entire process that you have to put in place - a process that can include non-disclosure agreements and forms and meeting with beta readers to discuss their thoughts and a variety of other things. But so far, it sounds pretty manageable, right? When you're set with your book and the writing part is done and you've got yourself something you can publish, there are even more things to consider. First and foremost, you've got to made a decision: are you going to be selling via established marketplaces like Amazon and use its KDP publishing, or are you going to lone wolf it - as in, sell your books directly on your website? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hyba/message

TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: "...And while I really feel the children steal the show with this book - and, after all, it mainly follows their adventures - there are so many adult characters in this book that are extremely well-written as well. The number one prize goes to the children's Mother, though, because this was a character that really got into my heart. She starts off being this wonderful, playful mom who writes them funny poems and short stories and is always there for them, and when they go through a rough patch in the family and have to move houses and change their lifestyles, she has such an air of positivity about her that is just extremely inspiring and endearing. She's always putting on a happy and peaceful and kind face around her children, even when you know she's sad and tired and working hard. And it really highlights the things that mothers do for us on the daily, how hard they work, how much they want good for us, and how much they're willing to sacrifice in order for their children to get the things they need and want. Oh, and then there's Perks, the porter in the train station, who isn't exactly the most mature of adults, but I quite liked his character, too. He grows on you the more you read about him, and when the children do something wonderful for him on his birthday - that chapters was just especially lovely. There's another chapter before that where he seems to be angry with the children about something, sitting there reading a newspaper and answering them in these sort of gruff, brief responses, and Phyllis gets so frustrated that she takes away his newspaper and climbs up on him and gives him a hug and tells him "Oh, let's kiss and be friends. We'll say we're sorry first, if you like, but we really didn't know that you didn't know." And I just found that so adorable and innocent and endearing! From a literary perspective, I also loved the settings, especially the train station that the kids spend so much time at and around. It's especially interesting to me because it seems like train stations are places where you are only temporarily - not places where most people stay, if you know what I mean. We're only ever really passing through. In one way, it makes it seem like the family - the kids and their mother - are stuck in a place, watching the rest of the world go by. But it also gives this understanding that the situation that the family is going through - that rough patch - is really only temporary, and I quite liked that..." ANNOUNCEMENT: Every now and then, I host a sale, or give my books away for FREE! Until July 15, 2021, you can grab free copy of Apartment by filling out this survey on enhanced ebooks to help me out with some academic research. --- In which I introduce my eerie suspense novella, Apartment, again, after a long hiatus. It's scheduled to launch in 2021, so keep an eye out for more info! Leave me your comments, thoughts, and Qs at my blog, my Twitter, my IG, or my Tumblr. TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: "...So, essentially the story started out as pure suspense. That's all I wanted with this book - a deep, suffocating, lingering feeling of suspense that never quite gets satisfied. As I worked on it more and more, I realized that I could do much more with a book like this, and I took a very literary route. I added layers upon layers to this book, with message after message and theme after theme, and sprinkled it with symbolism galore. There's a lot of peel back with this book, and if you read the book at face-value without really taking the time to mull it over and dig a little deeper, you might find it a completely absurd read - which, to be fair, it is! The story's main genres are suspense, magical realism, and psychological drama. There's some surrealism in there, but I place that in magical realism. If you don't know what magical realism is, you might be interested in checking out the works of Gabrial Garcia Marquez - I strongly recommend Chronicle of a Death Foretold, which does lend some inspiration to some parts of this book - and to those of Haruki Murakami - especially his book, After Dark, which also inspired me greatly as I wrote this book. Magical realism, to put it briefly, is when magical or extraordinary things happen in books but they're treated as normal happenings. For example, a painting could start talking to a character, and the book would never mention how strange that was, or treat it as anything out of the ordinary at all! It's a really interesting story mechanic, and I had a lot of fun working with it in Apartment. The book also pays homage to a lot of other works - including Chronicle of a Death Foretold and After Dark. For example, it gives a nod to The Exterminating Angel, a film by Luis Bunuel that makes use of a particularly surrealist form of huis clos. As for psychological drama, this is where the book can get a bit suffocating. It throws you right into the deep end with its narration, telling the story from the perspectives of each of the three main characters - and their minds are not always the best places to be! It also takes the perspectives of a few other characters throughout the story, and in some places takes on a mysterious perspective that seems to be that of the narrator, or perhaps the apartment building itself. Sometimes, the narration and internal thought processes of the characters almost bleed together, making it difficult to identify what is being shared by who, exactly...." In particular, I focus on 3 different settings, Bevatria, Sissa, and Vakkar, and how the job search happens in each of these places. Leave me your thoughts, comments, and questions at my blog, or drop by my Twitter, Tumblr, or IG. If you'd like to get regular updates - and by regular, I mean twice a month - as well as exclusive content, sign up for my newsletter. Don't miss out on those free goodies! Thanks for tuning in, folks! Until next time! TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: "...These days, concerns over unemployment are pretty front and center, especially among people of my own generation who are entering the workforce, and those of younger generations that are still in high school but can see that getting a job is going to be especially tough. Today, I wanted to discuss how unemployment - and employment - works in different parts of Qarra. In particular, I want to go ahead and talk about how it works in Belvatria, Sissa, and Vakkar - in that order. So let's start with Belvatria. The Belvatrian employment system works quite simply and efficiently. Usually, and at its most basic, one inherits a trade from one of their parents. In the case of both parents having different trades, they can choose which to pursue. Now, if they don't want to pursue either of those trades, or if one perhaps fails at pursuing those trades, they can opt to seek another trade. They can do this by going to different shops, organizations, factories, or businesses, and asking around to see if they are willing to take on an apprentice. This is tiring work. For those of you who have gone through the job search before, you know that you can get rejected by dozens before you land a job. And we've got the internet! So you can imagine how difficult it can be for a person having to go on foot to various locations every day to try their luck..." You can read the full transcript on my blog. The theme this year is "Better Health for Men and Boys". To help raise awareness, I made a special episode featuring the achievements of one of the fictional men in my high fantasy series, Qays, and introducing you to some real-life great men from the Golden Age of Islam that influenced his character! How are you celebrating this special day? Did you learn something new today? Leave me your thoughts, comments, and suggestions at my blog, via my website, or on my Twitter, IG, or Tumblr. Hope to hear from you soon! TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: "It is the 19th episode and it is November 19th, 2020, and I do not think this is a coincidence to take lightly because today is also International Men's Day! In honor of this lovely day, I'm baking something special for the wonderful men in my life as a small thank you for everything they have done for me, and I'm recording this episode featuring one of the men in my fantasy series, Qays! For those of you who don't know yet, Qays is one of the main characters in my book, The Fall of the Black Masks. He is Mila's father - Mila is another protagonist - and the man responsible for saving Ragnar - who is the third and final protagonist of that book. Some of you might not know this - I certainly didn't until today when I looked up what this day specifically celebrates - but International Men's Day is a time when we focus on the contributions of men in six areas of life: nation, society, community, marriage, family, and childcare. The theme for this year is "Better Health for Men and Boys". If you haven't already searched it up and learned more today about not only men's contributions but also the challenges to their health, today is a good day to do that. The reason that I chose Qays for this day is because I feel he embodies a good male figure and role model. He isn't perfect - none of us are - and he has made his own mistakes in the past. But Qays is an important character to me nonetheless, and I wanted to share a bit more about him with you today, especially as it concerns his contributions to the society, community, and nation of Belvatria, and his contributions to his family and daughter, Mila. So let's talk about Qays!" "...You might listen to all of this and roll your eyes and think, Sure, he can do that because he's a fictional character and he's perfect! He's got plot armor! He's not realistic! But there have been many people like Qays throughout the annals of history, many of whom have influenced the character concept of Qays tremendously. I might point you to the well-known Muslim physician, Ibn Sina, whose works were revolutionary at the time of the Golden Age of Islam. He is known today as the father of early modern medicine, but he wasn't only a physician - he was a philosopher, a writer, an astronomer, a mathematician, a chemist, and so much more. Or I might point you to Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi al-Ansari, another Muslim physician who was considered as the best surgeon in the Middle Ages and whose works would go on to influence the medical field for almost five-hundred years..." This is a special edition of Out to Lunch: New Orleans At The Crossroads. We've been at the crossroads before. If we wanted to list every economic boom and bust cycle in New Orleans, we could go back to the very first flood. In 1719. When Bienville was still building the first settlements. We survived that one. And we've survived other attempts at devastation. Most recently, after 2005, we did way more than just bounce back from Hurricane Katrina. The restoration of the city resulted in a massive economic boom. And, for the first time in around 40 years, a net migration gain. In what could only be described as a shocking surprise to those of us living here, New Orleans went from being a place you left if you wanted any sort of a high-achieving career, to a place where young, smart, entrepreneurial people moved to, to start a business. The city changed markedly. We started discussing issues we'd never had to confront before. Gentrification. Cost of living increases. Prohibitive rents. Property tax hikes. Before we knew it, we had more restaurants than we had before the hurricane. A couple of years ago, the city came up with a more accurate way of counting how many tourists were coming here - and discovered it's way more than they had thought. The real number of tourists is around 19 million a year. Things, it seemed, couldn't have been going much better for New Orleans. Then, one day, in March 2020, all that came to a sudden stop. Apparently thanks to Mardi Gras, a month earlier, New Orleans had unknowingly become a hotspot for the novel Corona virus, Covid 19. We went into a mode called, “lockdown.” Which was kind of like voluntary house arrest. At first, it didn't seem too bad - even for businesses who had to temporarily close their doors. But, what was going to be a few weeks of semi-vacation, where those who could worked from home, and those who couldn't collected more money in unemployment insurance than they were making at work, has turned into something else. Months later, the 19 million tourists are gone. And we don't know when, or if, they will ever come back in the numbers we knew before. Entrepreneurs are struggling to survive. Many small businesses that have managed to reopen are making do with significantly less revenue, and are forced to lay off staff. Under occupational restrictions, and because of people's continued fear of catching the virus, restaurants are starving for business. Some notable restaurants are already closed for good. Unemployment is at a historic high. And our world-famous live music industry is shut down. So, what are we going to do? We can cross our fingers and hope that everything eventually bounces back, like it has every other time we've had a disaster for the past 300 years. Or, Plan B - we can use the enormous amount of talent and resources that the last dilemma delivered to us on the crest of the migration and economic wave, and proactively take action to change the direction of the city so that we can cope with, and even capitalize on, the new reality. And that, Plan B, is what Peter Ricchiuti is putting into action on this special edition of Out to Lunch. Peter has assembled a panel of New Orleans business owners and thought leaders who are all impacted by the pandemic. All the members of this panel are invested in grappling with the realities of what the city will need to do to survive this immediate crisis, and are unafraid to tackle questions about the bigger structural issues that have gotten us to this position, on the precipice of a potential and real disaster one of them describes as a coming “Hellscape.” Graison Gill is the owner of Bellegarde Bakery. Until the end of July 2020, when it was forced to close, hopefully temporarily, Bellegarde operated a local retail bakery. It also shipped flour, grits and pasta nationwide. And provided products to more than 120 restaurants. In 2020 Graison Gill was a finalist for the James Beard Award - the Academy Awards of food - for Outstanding Baker. Eric Cook is a combat veteran who served six years in the United States Marine Corps. After his military career, Eric returned to his native New Orleans and became a chef. Eric has cooked at some of New Orleans' finest restaurants, including Commander's Palace. Until July of 2020 when it was forced to close, hopefully temporarily, Eric was owner and Executive Chef at his own restaurant, Gris Gris, in the Lower Garden District. Carol Markowitz is COO and Senior Vice President of Finance at Loyola University. Carol was previously the Founding Executive Director of NOCHI, New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute, she's worked in corporate finance in Los Angeles and has an MBA from Harvard Business School. Matt Wisdom is founder and CEO of New Orleans-based Turbosquid. Turbosquid is the Amazon.com of 3d models. It's the world's leading marketplace for the type of 3D models used in everything from movies and video games to commercials and teaching tools. Holly Devon is a writer, Senior Editor at Antigravity Magazine, and founding editor of The Iron Lattice, a New Orleans quarterly arts publication. Holly has written extensively about tourism and urban planning in New Orleans. Kristin Giselson Palmer is a member of the New Orleans City Council, representing District C, which includes Algiers, the French Quarter, the Marigny, Treme, St. Roch and Bywater neighborhoods. If you're looking for the usual platitudes about how things are all going to be great delivered in biz-speak by the usual suspects, this conversation is not that. This is an honest assessment of where we are, where we're going, and how we're going to get there, from the minds of people who know what they're talking about, and the lived experience of people whose lives and livelihoods depend on the decisions we make about the direction of the City of New Orleans. See photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at our website. Hear our panelists on Out to Lunch in better times: Graison Gill. Carol Markowitz. Matt Wisdom on our sister podcast Happy Hour. CPA Exam Study Questions covered on this Podcast: Sameh - is the percentage of completion still tested on the FAR exam because I found an MCQ about it, I have heard that it is not tested any more so I want to be sure about that. Lucy - I barely finished watching Wiley videos for FAR. I am reading the Wiley FAR textbook. I did not start MCQs and Sims of it. I am going to study with the Ninja program after I finish MCQs and Sims. I have CPA Exams scheduled for FAR and AUD in July 2020. What strategy do you recommend to pass FAR and the other three? Please advise me. Thank you Andy - I am a Ninja Monthly member and just curious about what you think about how COVID-19 will impact the CPA testing as all the centers have been shut down with uncertainty on when it will be re-opened. This makes it difficult for us that want to schedule our study time for test dates (mine got canceled due to COVID) and for expiring scores. I would like to hear your thoughts and strategies you would implement during these times. Renee - I need some motivation. I failed BEC 5 times. My last score was 73. The first 2 times I took it, I didn’t study enough. But the last three times (71, 64, 73) I really tried. Any suggestions? I lost Reg, passed it again in March. I passed Far and am about to lose AUD. Luke - I hope all is well during these difficult times. I just had a question/clarification regarding the Ninja 2020 FAR Simulations List. How exactly was this list made? Are these just the SIMs that have the highest chances of showing up on the FAR exam? I scored a 65 on my last FAR exam and tried to think of things I need to fix or do differently this time around and I didn't focus much on SIMs the first time around besides watching Becker Skill Master Videos for the SIMs. So I figured this time around studying I'd supplement with Ninja & allocate more time to practicing SIMs (even though I am still iffy on the time I spend for SIM Studying as we know it is luck of the draw for SIMs you get on Exam and studying for SIMs take up a lot of time). I plan to use Ninja MCQ last 2 weeks before my CPA Exam. Currently doing Becker MCQ/SIMs/Notes along with Ninja notes. Also, any feedback or advice you have on approaching the FAR retake is appreciated! I am struggling to find confidence in the approach and schedule I have now. Brenda - Due to this coronavirus I have been unable to do anything for over two week and I had been studying relentlessly since November 2019. Do you have a suggestion to help me get back into so I don’t lose all of the ground I made? My daughter is home and with all the bad news I can’t get back on track. Odalys - I just want to ask you something. I recently got my score and sadly I failed. The thing is, that was my second try for BEC. The first time I score 63 and my report says I got weaker on the three areas (mcqs, simulations and written communication). This time I got 59 and my report says I got comparable on mcqs and written communication. I cannot understand how I scored less with better performance. I feel so discouraged about it. Nick - This Coronavius pandemic is totally screwing up my rhythm, I recently took FAR (my last CPA exam) and got a 72. I’m going on my fourth time taking it and I’m so confused/concerned how the pandemic is going help or hurt me. If you could lend any information/advice to me it’d be greatly appreciated! Dan - Jeff, I had my Audit exam canceled and now a May or June exam date seems more likely. I have Aud, Reg, and Bec left to take. My question is whether you think I should keep hammering Audit for another month or two or start studying for another section (and if so which one) while still reviewing Audit. Any help you could provide is much appreciated. Thanks for everything! Britney - I have a question for you. Until July 2020, the REG exam is still testing over the 2019 tax laws, correct? Have a question for the podcast? Ask Jeff. Not a NINJA Monthly member? No worries.
How often does a podcast give you chills? This week, we have a very special guest in Brit Morgan. Brit currently serves as a Teen Program Coordinator with COA’s Holton Youth Center. Until July of this year, Brit was a Community Health Ambassador through Public Allies working on the Infant Mortality Prevention Initiative here at United Way. Brit is also the founder and host of the newly 3-year-old PENtastic Open Mic series. A spoken word artist herself, Brit refers to this bi-monthly event as her “labor of love” and a “healing center” for people to feel included and connected to their community. The PENtastic Open Mic happens the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 8pm at The Artist Factory here in Milwaukee. This episode was recorded before Brit began her new role at COA, so we will hear about her work with the Infant Mortality initiative at to begin, then move into some conversation about spoken word and PENtastic. Be sure to listen to the end of the episode to hear Brit share an original spoken word piece she composed. That’s where the chills come in.
Please note that this event involved a translator, as a result there may be some background noise in parts of the recording where translation is taking place. This event will analyse current developments on the ground in Northern Syria with Ilham Ehmed, co-president of the Executive Council of the de-facto autonomous region of North and East Syria. Following the recent Turkish incursion and US withdrawal, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) have stated that they are ready to negotiate with Damascus. This event will take a look at a general overview of what led up to this decision, what the future holds for the Kurdish project in North and East Syria and how these negotiations will impact the future of Syria in all it's regions. Ilham Ehmed is a Syrian-Kurdish politician. Until July 2018, she was a co-chair of the SDC, the political wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. She is a senior member of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and a member of the executive committee of the Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM) coalition. Ahmed is an active member of the Syrian Women’s Initiative for Peace and Democracy (SWIPD), a network of civil society organizations from inside and outside of Syria. Have you been wondering what happened to the Urban Astronomer Podcast? Do you know want to know why there haven't been any episodes in a while? Then you're going to want to hear this. We're launching our second season, and we've decided to change how we do things here. While the basic format will still sound like the shows you've come to love and expect, we're changing how we make them. Starting from the 2nd of June 2019, we'll be releasing a series of 12 episodes, one every two weeks. We've had quite a lot of feedback from our loyal listeners over the past few months, and we now have a solid idea of what you want more of, and what you'd like us to drop. The new episodes will alternate between interviews with astronomers working in South Africa, and basic science questions, where we take very basic questions about our universe, and dig deep to see if they are actually that simply after all! Interviews Our featured guests will be: Dr Wendy Williams Dr Ros Skelton Dr Daniel Cunnama Ms Nicole Thomas Dr Tana Jospeh Dr Jarita Holbrook Science Some of the questions we'll be looking at will seem very obvious, yet turn out to be hard to explain when you really start to think them through. We'll be starting with "Why is it that planets are always round?", moving on to "How exactly do orbits work?". And I'll even be explaining myself to a confused listener: In an earlier episode, I claimed that the old geocentric model of the universe, with it's crystal spheres and epicycles, made more sense than the Heliocentric model proposed by Copernicus. This was apparently a controversial statement, and so I'll be explaining why I was right, despite all that we now know about how the geocentric model was wrong in almost every conceivable way! Subscribe So if you want to hear every episode of this second season, as they're released, be sure to subscribe. Just find the subscribe links scattered around this website and click the one most appropriate for your platform. You'll never miss an episode again! Until July then, thanks for listening, and I look forward to speaking to you again! Clear skies!
Susan A. Thornton delivered the 2019 Barnett-Oksenberg Lecture on Sino-American Relations in Shanghai on Wednesday, May 15. Now in its twelfth year, this annual lecture affords the opportunity for a frank and forthright discussion of current and potential issues between the two countries; it is the first and only ongoing lecture series on U.S.-China relations that takes place on the Mainland. Susan A. Thornton is a retired senior U.S. diplomat with almost 30 years of experience with the U.S. State Department in Eurasia and East Asia. She is currently a senior fellow and research scholar at Yale Law School's Paul Tsai China Center. Until July 2018, Thornton was acting assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State and led East Asia policy making amid crises with North Korea, escalating trade tensions with China, and a fast-changing international environment. In previous State Department roles, she worked on China and Korea policy and served in leadership positions at U.S. embassies in Central Asia, Russia, the Caucasus, and China. She speaks Russian and Mandarin Chinese. View more information on the Barnett-Oksenberg Lecture here: https://ncuscr.news/barnett-oksenberg

Chris Lewis talks about his experience of living with stage 4 Mantle Cell Lymphoma for over 12 years. Until July 2007 Chris was a self-employed Business Consultant. It was then that Chris was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer and given only six months to live! After aggressive chemotherapy and a stem-cell transplant Chris was surviving the terrible disease. "I saw how poor the cancer support sector really was, being so disjointed and not really addressing any practical issues, that I decided to talk out about it to see if I was the only one who felt that way. I wasn’t, and very quickly friends of mine had started me a website dedicated to cancer patents to help spread the word. This site is now the most popular cancer blog in the UK and I am frequently invited to speak around the world about my experiences. I can now use my influence to change things for everyone affected by cancer, and I have been able to start a unique charity SimPal that gives free phones and sim cards to anyone affected by cancer. The only charity of it’s kind in the world". You can find out more about Chris's blog here: Chris’s Cancer Community Don't forget to check out the Aunty M Brain Tumours Website. Fail, fail Again, fail better - Samuel Beckett Welcome to the show notes for Episode 46 of Sally’s Performing Arts Lab Podcast. Chris O’Rourke, playwright, director, Irishman and critic joins me from Dublin, Ireland on episode 46 of SallyPAL. To hear his authentic (and very appealing) Irish brogue, you need to find the episode on your favorite podcast platform. Just type in SallyPAL and look for Episode 46. I’m podcast host, Sally Adams. I talk to people about creating original work for a live audience. Send an email to me anytime by sending to Sally@sallypal.com. Share your story with me and let me know about a creator you’d like me to interview. Copyright UpdateI want to do a little update on the copyright information I shared in the last blog and podcast when I told you all copyrighted material from 1923 would be entering the public domain this year after a 20 year wait for Federal term extensions. That actually happened at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2019. Today, January 10, 2019, I heard an episode of the radio show 1A with host Joshua Johnson on WAMU (the show is on a lot of NPR stations as well as the Internet). Husband and wife copyright experts James Boyle and Jennifer Jenkins spend an enlightening hour reviewing what the copyright laws mean for creative people. I highly recommend checking out Joshua Johnson’s January 10 episode of 1A concerning copyright law. I think it will clarify a lot of what we face as creators in the digital age from “fair use” to Creative Commons. They also discuss tools available to resolve the plagiarizing of protected works. Knowledge is power. Podcast Guest Chris O’RourkeChris O’Rourke is a playwright, director, drama coach and critic currently living in Dublin, Ireland. Until July, 2016 Chris was the National Theatre Critic for Examiner.com. He now reviews performances for The Arts Review. I think Chris has reviewed nearly every live play in Ireland. I get his reviews in my email box every week and read them not just because I’m interested in the Irish theatre scene (I wouldn’t be if it wasn’t for Chris). I read his reviews from TheArtsReview.com because they are a master class in what makes a live show worth seeing. Anyone producing live theatre needs to read Chris’ insightful and intelligent journalism. You can do that by visiting the website. Chris reviews and writes for TheArtsReview.com. Check it out. Chris O’Rourke is also the artistic director of the award-winning Everything is Liminal and Unknown Theatre troupes specializing in originating works with young people from high risk backgrounds. Unknown Theatre’s groundbreaking production, “If Walls Could Talk” played at The 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival to rave reviews. I hope you’ll click the podcast link at the top of this blog entry to enjoy episode 46 with Chris O’Rourke. I also invite you to go to your favorite podcast provider and download past episodes. There are dozens of wonderful conversations with people creating original work in the world of performance right now. I interview choreographers, playwrights, musicians, scholars, designers, technicians and performers from stages all over the world. Every interview includes a section titled Concise Advice from the Interview that highlights the best nuggets of wisdom, as well as Words of Wisdom from George, a brief bit of insight from my husband, the coolest guy on the planet. Concise Advice from the Interview for Episode 46 includes five bits of advice from Critic and Playwright, Chris O’Rourke: 5 Be honest in your criticism. As long as there’s no vindictiveness you can be share what you see. 4 When working with young people, do work that is relevant to their lives. 3 It’s important to tell stories of people whose voices aren’t ordinarily heard. 2 If you’re working with young people, let them have fun, find their voices, and express themselves. 1 Respect your audience by keeping them engaged and entertained. Thank you for reading, following, sharing, subscribing, reviewing, joining, & thank you for listening to the podcast. If you’re downloading and listening on your drive to work, or reading the blog after hours, let me know you’re out there. Shared storytelling is the most important thing we do as a culture. That’s why I encourage you to share your stories because you’re the only one with your particular point of view. And SallyPAL is here with resources, encouragement, and a growing community of storytellers. All the stories ever expressed once lived only in someone’s imagination.
Dave started a 12 week coaching program with me and we are on week #5. When I first started with Dave he wanted to run a marathon or do a big trail run but after a few weeks, injuries halted our plans and Daves motivation to do a race has started to waiver. Other than the race, Dave’s other goals were being more physically active, to reduce heartburn and you’ll hear in this episode he wants to be able to work and fish until he’s a 100 years old. One of the other things we get into the episode is, finding other things that Dave likes to do and where we can fit in. We talk about past activities and what brought him success and why those things don't fit in his life anymore. Check out today's episode to hear what we came up and how to stop looking into your past self. Until July 31st 2018 I'm offering a FREE 30 min, no pressure, no hassle Coaching call with me through Skype. You just need to visit remixmyfitness.com and I will send you my calendar. HBS 035 Interview w_ Robbie Kaplan -Then Comes Marriage_ United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA Roberta A. "Robbie" Kaplan is an American lawyer. She is the founding partner of Kaplan & Company, LLP, a law firm dedicated to commercial litigation and public interest matters, and an adjunct professor of law at Columbia University Law School. Until July 2017, she was a partner in the Litigation Department of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Kaplan successfully argued before the Supreme Court of the United States on behalf of her client, Edith Windsor, in United States v. Windsor (2013). This resulted in a landmark decision that invalidated a section of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), thus requiring the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages. Windsor led to the 2015 Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which struck down all remaining state and federal laws against same-sex marriage across the United States. United States v. Windsor In 2009, Kaplan agreed to represent Edie Windsor pro bono. Windsor's wife, Thea Spyer, had died two years after they wed in Canada, leaving Windsor her sole heir. But because their marriage was not recognized under existing U. S. federal law, Windsor received an estate tax bill of $363,053. Windsor went to gay rights advocates seeking redress but could find no one to take her case. She was referred to Kaplan, who later recalled, "When I heard her story, it took me about five seconds, maybe less, to agree to represent her." Kaplan had been co-counsel on the unsuccessful bid for marriage equality in New York state in 2006. In a spirited exchange between Kaplan and Chief Justice John Roberts during oral arguments for the case, Roberts alleged that politicians were "falling all over themselves" to support her case. Kaplan responded, "The fact of the matter is, Mr. Chief Justice, is that no other group in recent history has been subjected to popular referenda to take away rights that have already been given or exclude those rights, the way gay people have." On June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 5-4 decision declaring Section 3 of DOMA to be unconstitutional. Edith Windsor declared, "Robbie Kaplan said, as Martin Luther King said before her, there is no wrong time to seek justice." Roberta (Robbie) Kaplan, the founding partner at Kaplan & Company, LLP, one of the few women-led elite boutique litigation law firms has been described as a “powerhouse corporate litigator” and “pressure junkie” who “thrives on looking at the big picture” whether “in the gay-marriage legal fight or high-profile corporate scandals.” She has been selected as one of “The 100 Most Influential Lawyers” in the United States, as a “Litigator of the Year” by The American Lawyer, and as a “Lawyer of the Year” by Above the Law. In addition to representing large institutional and corporate clients like Fitch Ratings, Airbnb, Columbia University and T-Mobile, Robbie book “Then Comes Marriage: United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA” (W.W. Norton 2015), was chosen by the L.A. Times and Ms. Magazine as one of the top 10 books of 2015. In commenting on the book, President Bill Clinton called Robbie an “American hero.” Robbie has received numerous recognitions for her legal accomplishments and charitable activities, including the New York Law Journal Lifetime Achievement Award; Financial Times Legal Innovator of the Year; the Columbia Law School Medal of Excellence; as well as an honorary doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary. In this episode we talk to Matthew Becker who used to be a minister in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS), a conservative denomination of the Lutheran church that does not ordain women. We talk about Matt’s personal growth in the LCMS, how he came to question the more conservative doctrines of the denomination (specifically Creationism and women’s ordination), and the heresy charges and tribunals that he had to go through, which, ultimately, lead him to leave the LCMS all together. Dr. Matthew Becker, M.Div., M.A., Ph.D. was born in Salem, Oregon, in 1962. He attended public schools there and graduated in 1984 from Concordia University, Portland, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the liberal arts. That same year he entered the Master of Divinity program at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. After receiving his Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary in 1988, he entered a doctoral program in theology at the University of Chicago. While a student in that university, he was privileged to study under such notable theologians as Brian Gerrish, David Tracy (his Doktorvater), and Martin Marty. During that time Dr. Becker also took courses at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. In 1990 he earned a Master of Arts in Religious Studies degree from the University of Chicago. In 1996 he passed his doctoral examinations with the mark of “with distinction.” His dissertation, "The Self-giving God: Trinitarian Historicality and Kenosis in the Theology of Johann von Hofmann (1810-1877)," was completed in the summer of 2001. A revised version of this work was later published as The Self-Giving God and Salvation History: The Trinitarian Theology of Johannes von Hofmann (T&T Clark, 2004). This work examines the theology of one of the most important Lutheran theologians of the nineteenth century. Dr. Becker was ordained into the Lutheran ministry in 1989. Until July 2015 he was a rostered clergyman in the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod (LCMS). He is currently seeking ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). For five years he was an assistant pastor and later associate pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, West Dundee, Illinois (1989-94). For two of those years he also served as an interim pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Chicago. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Becker has served as the Secretary of the Northwest District of the LCMS (2000-4). Between Oct 2010 and March 2014 he served as the interim pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Michigan City, Indiana. Dr. Becker and his wife, Detra, were married in June 1993. They have a sixteen-year-old son, Jacob. Guest // Alan Phillips, EsqHost // Valerie Borek, EsqAll fifty states provide for medical exemptions to mandatory vaccination for day care and school admission. Forty-eight offer a religious exemption and 20 have a personal belief or philosophical opt-out provision…Until July 1, 2016, anyway… when SB277 takes effect and California joins Mississippi and West Virginia as the three states in this country to deny the option for a parent-directed vaccine exemption.More states may follow California’s lead; they are surely trying. On the heels of this legislative offensive and irrespective of state statutes, schools across the country have been putting the pressure on parents this fall. Can a school choose not to follow state law?Can a school exclude a child based on vaccination status?Do I have to explain my religious beliefs to obtain an exemption? Is this constitutional? What happens when a private day care or school won’t honor a religious vaccine exemption? What can we do to protect our rights?Attorney Alan Phillips is a nationally recognized vaccine law expert. For over a decade he has been dedicated to legislative activism to preserve exemption rights, educating the public on vaccine law, and helping individuals and families secure their rights in public and private settings. Australia asserts sovereignty to 42 per cent of the Antarctic continent and has a long involvement in Antarctic exploration and science. Australia also has important economic and environmental interests in the Great Southern Ocean. We are an original signatory to the Antarctic Treaty which, among other things, establishes all that part of the globe below 60 degrees South as a region free of military conflict and nuclear arms. While Australia has been a leading player in Antarctic affairs for more than a century, Australian leadership should not be taken for granted as new countries emerge as significant participants in the Antarctic treaty System. This NSC public seminar will explore the emerging issues in Antarctica and their implications for the Antarctic Treaty System and for Australia’s Antarctic policy. Dr Tony Press is the Chief Investigator for the Australian Government’s 20 Year Australian Antarctic Strategic Plan and Adjunct Professor at the University of Tasmania. Until July this year, he was the CEO of the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre in Hobart. Prior to that, from 1998 to 2008, he was the Director of the Australian Antarctic Division, Australia’s Commissioner to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, the Australian Delegate for the Antarctic Treaty and the Australian Representative to the Committee on Environmental Protection (as well as its Chair from 2002 to 2006). Dr Press has had a long career in public administration and has a particular interest in the links between science and policy. The National Security College is a joint initiative of the Commonwealth Government and ANU.
Now that Joshua Komisarjevsky has been sentenced to death we revisit my interview with author Brian McDonald as we discuss In The Middle Of The Night. The affluent suburb of Cheshire, Connecticut, seemed like the perfect place for Dr. William Petit and his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, to raise their two lovely daughters… Until July 23, 2007, when, according to police, two ex-cons invaded the Petit home hoping to embark on a routine robbery—one that would ultimately prove deadly. What unfolded at 300 Sorghum Mill Drive was a tragic and horrifying sequence of events that shocked a community and made headlines across the nation. Before the morning was over, Mrs. Hawke-Petit and one of her daughters would be sexually assaulted, the entire house would go up in flames, and only Dr. Petit—his head bloodied, his legs bound—would manage to escape with his life. With the help of neighbors and local police, the two suspects were soon found and captured. Now, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes await trial for murder IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
