Charlie comes on to talk about how though an engineering program, he found the dental laboratory industry. Getting hired at Bristol Crown (https://www.bristolcrown.com/), a lab-to -lab milling center for the ALS Dental Group (https://als-dental.com/). He starts by loading mills and scanning models, and soon noticed of how many of the crowns looked the same. Pushed by self-learning, Charlie was soon designing crowns in Exocad (https://exocad.com/) and he even started making teeth libraries for other labs in the ALS group. Going back to lab school, he had an assignment of drawing crowns and a new passion started. Now Charlie is taking his art to the next level by creating detailed and brightly colored pieces that include not only crowns, but implants, abutments, full arches, dentures, and so much more. If you spend any time at dental shows or just around the industry in general, you have probably crossed paths with Jamie before. You see, Jamie started in the industry back in 1998 after a suggestion from his dentist brother. After finding his way into a dental lab, Jamie has been a delivery driver, model room technician, ceramist, and so much more. It wasn't long before he was manager and even Operations Manager. While he was moving the lab from analog to digital, Jamie found the Carbon Printer (https://www.carbon3d.com/) and discovered something great. He now works for them as Senior Manager of Application Strategy and Integration. What does that mean? Well, we had to ask too. Turns out Jamie gets to help any lab with a Carbon printer with any question or issue the lab has. Even if it isn't related to the Carbon Printer. How cool is that? He's also the current Chair of The National Board for Certification (https://nbccert.org/homepage.cfm) in Dental Laboratory Technology and talks about the importance of getting your certification and giving back to the industry. A great meeting with a great company. Go show them some love and get some MIYO. First up we talk to two legends in our industry, Dany Sakr and Nick Azzara. Nick talks about what he is doing with a DSO group and reminisces about his time working with Dany. Dany talks about his journey from Lebanon to the US to learn dental technology in the early 80s, getting into digital early in it's existence, opening Sakr Dental Arts (https://sakrdentalarts.com/), and how they keep their lab relevant about just making crowns. Then we meet for the first time Ifet Ahmeti. Ifet learned the craft in Albania in 2009. Since then she has been in Switzerland to learn quality, Indiana to learn removables, and then opened her own in-office lab in Philadelphia. She has since moved to Tampa, Florida and opened another lab, Dentart Dental Studio (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063693726196). Ifet talks about managing clients when you are a solo technician, the importance of using the best materials, and why seeing patients allows you do make the best restoration. Then we wrap up all of the FDLA with past podcast guest, Whitney Coutney. Whitney has had a great journey from assistant to in-office tech in Kentucky, to full arch designer in Florida. In 2022 she wanted to get into education and partnered with Nowak Dental Supplies (https://www.nowakdental.com/) to on-board and teach labs the digital workflow. Whitney talks about how she handles labs doing a "software switch", helping technicians learn practical uses of either 3shape or exocad, and how she keeps up on the ever-evolving technology. *NOTE - Since recording with Whitney, she had taken a position back at Midwest Dental Arts (https://www.midwestdentalarts.com/) doing what she loves best. They talk about the importance of communication, since Kristina designs in England and Margarita finishes in Lithuania, the workflow of near instant patient treatment planning, and always working with the end result in mind. Then we learn what a Dental Therapist is when we chat with Cat Edney. Cat started as a hygienist, but knew she could do more and went to get her Dental Therapist license. Usually referred to as an “all-on-X”, these are amazing life changing treatments that come with a hefty price tag and in turn a decent profit for everyone. It's not super complicated to do a case, but a lot can happen during and after that will require the work of a team to overcome. Two dentists are changing the mindset in dentistry to make sure everyone involved is on the same page. Dr. Ryan Dunlop from Full Arch Masters (https://www.fullarchmasters.com/) and Dr. Johnathan Abenaim from X-Cell Dental Implant Center (https://needteethnow.com/) want to make sure everyone on the team understands the need to do it right. Usually teaching separate courses, Dr. Dunlop and Dr. Abenaim felt it necessary to join forces and give the unsponsored, truthful, and RAW look at what goes into giving a patient a good looking, functioning restoration. Both talk about why they got into teaching and what they have learned along the way like learning to customize the treatment to the patient, learning to communicate better with in the team, changing the status quo, and changing the mindset of dentistry. Enter AmericaSmiles (https://americasmiles.net/). Keith Crittenden has a long history of knowing how labs work. From working in a few, to eventually owning his own, Keith has lived the struggles that lab have every day. Now Keith and AmericaSmiles help labs everyday with marketing, milling, supplies, and finding additional revenue where most labs don't even think to look. Donate to the Race For the Future 7.0! Aug 28-29 in Chicago, Ill. (http://dentallabfoundation.org/news-events/race-for-the-future/) If you have ever been to a dental show like LMT Lab Day Chicago or Vision 21, you probably have seen a guy with white hair and a white beard with a thick southern accent making a group of people laugh. That is Harold Burdette from "Lab of the Year" Burdette Dental Laboratory (https://www.burdettedental.com/). Harold comes on the podcast to talk about working in his dad's lab back in the 70s (starting during the beginning of PFMs) and growing that business to become one of the longest family owned labs, being a part of the TEREC group (http://terecna.com/), and what a semi-retired technician does when he hands to lab to the next generation in his family. Great stories from a technician that knows it all. Whip Mix (https://www.whipmix.com/) introduces the CUREbox Plus (https://www.whipmix.com/products/curebox-plus/), a new curing unit that ensures the proper and full polymerization of 3D printed resins. It really is the ideal curing unit for dental labs and dentists because the CUREbox Plus uses light and heat energy, with controlled time and temperature, to provide an ideal environment suitable for post-curing SLA and DLP type 3D printed models. The American-made, competitively priced curing unit is very easy to use and has a large capacity curing chamber for high production, is super easy to clean and maintain, and offers a one-year warranty which covers everything but the inexpensive, long-lasting UV LED lamps. Though the CUREbox Plus can cure virtually any printed resin, it has been qualified with the following Whip Mix resins: Veriguide OS (https://www.whipmix.com/products/veriguide-os-clear/), VeriSplint OS (https://www.whipmix.com/products/verisplint-os-3d-print-resin/), Dentca denture base (https://www.whipmix.com/products/dentca/), denture teeth, try-in, and Temporary Crown and Bridge (https://www.whipmix.com/products/dentca-temporary-crown-bridge-resin/). On this episode of the Board Game BBQ, Sarah is joined by Def and Dan to talk about heavy games, light games, and everything in between. In our Sizzling Games, Def wows us with the epic Gaia Project, Dan (and his son) battle the undead in Zombie Kidz Evolution, and Sarah has been trying to get everyone onto her wavelength in, er... Wavelength. We also introduce a new segment: Beyond the Board, an interview series where we speak to interesting people in the board gaming community. This week we spoke with Oliver Millan, a Melbourne board game designer who has been working on his pet project, Matchbox Empires, for over two years. We discuss his inspiration for the game, and learn about its mechanics, but also enjoy a greater discussion about prototypes and playtesting. We reveal the winner of the most recent Board Game Bracket: Aeons End Legacy vs Azul, before announcing the next match-up: Through The Ages vs Dead of Winter. It's Dan vs Def in this one and only one game can be victorious. Make sure your favourite goes through to the next round by casting your vote on all of our socials. There's not a lot of Kickstarter action between the team this week, so instead Def breaks down the heavily-backed Nemesis for us. Meanwhile, Dan has backed the fun-sounding Roll Camera!: The Filmmaking Board Game. Swear An Oath is such an important segment - it's when out team stand before each other and our listeners and vow to honor the Board Game Gods by playing a game from our #shelfofshame. Which is why it is so disappointing when one of our own fails to respect the code and fulfill their oath. Okay, that was a bit heavy-handed - basically Sarah didn't have time to play Race For the Galaxy: Alien Artifacts this week. But she does make amends by doubling-down on her oath and adding Papayoo to the list. Meanwhile Dan played both Stuffed Fables and Fox In The Forest Duet, and Def played Tzolk'in. The lads then add Back In Time (Dan) and Viticulture (Def) to their oaths. NOTE: Due to the coronavirus situation, the Race For the Cure Metro Jackson event previously scheduled for April 25, 2020 has been postponed. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for women between the ages of 20 and 39.Genetic factors can put women at a higher risk of breast cancer. Women diagnosed at age 40 and younger may have BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene mutations. Women who have a BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene mutation can have up to a 72% risk of developing breast cancer. Danyell Williams had recently given birth to an eager, lively, alert, bright-eyed baby girl, she and her husband, Richard, had named Sadie Seona. While breast feeding 2-month-old Sadie, Danyell noticed a rather large lump in her breast. Her doctor thought it was a blocked milk duct and suggested hand compression and antibiotics. Although concerned due to her mother having been diagnosed twice with breast cancer, Danyell continued to breastfeed and follow the directions from her doctor. The lump did not go away. Three months passed, and Danyell found a second lump under her arm. This time she became her own advocate and asked her doctor for a mammogram, regardless of her young age of 32. (Most insurance plans are not required by law to pay for screening mammograms for women below the age of 40.) Danyell was immediately sent for an ultrasound and a mammogram, which led to a biopsy that same day. Alone and unprepared, Danyell feared the worst. Join Catherine Young, Sr. Vice President of the Susan G. Komen Memphis-MidSouth Mississippi affiliate, Molly May, breast cancer survivor and author of My Crowning Achievement, and featured guest, Danyell Williams, as she tells her heart-wrenching story of cancer diagnosis, loss, courage, faith, and the comfort received from the beautiful, encouraging eyes of her baby daughter, Sadie. Our Dusty Old Box segment features a blast from the past --Mark catapults Jeff back to junior high school days with this one. Mark then polishes-off the Dusty segment --not with a box, but with a...thing...a...Dusty Old Thing. Once Jeff recovers from his temporal shift, we dig into our main topics. Unlike our typical main segments, in which one of us presents a game we know well and love, we thought it would be a fun change of pace to present two games that were totally brand-new to BOTH of us. Jeff starts us off by covering the game Dracula, a two-player game that is part of the Kosmos "Games For Two" series.
