Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new series on 2005's Psychonauts. We stay in the same year as our last game, and dive into a little of the prehistory of the game before diving into the game proper. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Coach Oleander's Brain Issues covered: making something for someone else to own, spinning off from LucasArts, staying true to their persona, being a more open studio, documentaries about the studio, the possibility of the studio closing, how the game starts, a super stylistic game, clear identity, bringing individuality to each character, asymmetry, offending the efficient developer, hand-crafting everything, impeccable writing and voice acting, themes coming through later, trailblazing, an indie scene in San Francisco, changing guards at publishers, drawing on psychology for its setting, a cohesive and pure game, exploring two tutorial areas, customizing buckets of figments of imagination, building engine game and studio together, crunch-tastic development, a variety of action and platforming primitives, an underimplemented feel and polish, fighting the camera, systemic cameras that have trouble covering everything, a big swing, asymmetric multiplayer modes, mutators, an internal mail alias, voice over IP, what do you need to support an MP game post-launch, inventory tetris, risk to return to get a loot item, a vestigial element of games, forcing hard choices or loops, re-examining genre "defaults," informing our own work, Octavia's gadget system, giving more agency to the player, a shifting meta, a wide tunnel of known options. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Tim Schafer, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, LucasArts, Microsoft, Ed Fries, Majesco, 2015, Metal of Honor: Allied Assault, Infinity Ward, Call of Duty, Jason West, Vince Zapella, Nihilistic, Infinite Machine, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Phantom Menace, Dean Sharpe, Kalani Streicher, Broken Age, Unreal Engine, Kiln, Two Player Productions, Scott Campbell, Disney, Warner Bros, Studio Ghibli, Peter Chan, Day of the Tentacle, SW: Republic Commando, Beyond Good & Evil, Monkey Island (series), Spyro, Super Mario (series), Illumination, Braid, Celeste, Choice Provisions/Gaijin Games, Super Meat Boy, Team Meat, World of Goo, Crystal Dynamics, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Ocarina of Time, Ashton Herrmann, Unreal Tournament, Quake, Duke Nuke'em, Hunt: Showdown, Repo, Peak, Matthew, Outlaws, Aliens vs Predator, Starcraft, Matthew, Diablo, Animal Crossing, Resident Evil (series), Harley Baldwin, Halo, DOOM (1993), Maas, Project: Octavia, Troy Mashburn, Thief (series), Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's June, so that means it's time for our “Junesis” series! Where we cover movies based on/revolving around video games! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and first time guest Gordon Jones discuss the first ever video game movie sequel, 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation! Daddy issues! Cyber Ninjas! A hot goth baddie! Animalities! A lady with four arms kinda! Speedy sleeve removal! Goofy cybernetically-enhanced arms! Abundant flips! Evil eyebrows! Weird gyroscopic transport spheres! Surprise landmarks! Fun miniature FX! Cheesy designs and poorly executed CGI monsters! Excessive use of possibly one sandpit! Fun sets! Extra budget for campiness! An occasionally imposing villain! Awkward attempts to emulate gameplay! Shockingly few fatalities! An iconic soundtrack that does a lot of heavy lifting! Very noticeable recasting! Nearly-great fight scenes featuring stunt performances from future action movie legends Tony Jaa and The Furious director Kenji Tanigaki! All that and more in this infamous sequel that resulted in Paul W.S. Anderson holding onto the Resident Evil franchise like his life depended on it! In addition, the gang shares some spoiler-free thoughts on Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride, Backrooms, and Travis Knight's Masters of the Universe, while Alex declares his new found love for the filmography of Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan, including Humint, Veteran, I, the Executioner, The City of Violence, The Battleship Island, and Escape from Mogadishu! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The Death Don't Do Fiction podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris and Tim Gardiner, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from two filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Twitter, Bluesky, or Letterboxd @actionharris. This episode's guest, Gordon Jones, can be found on instagram @heyitzjonesy. Tim can't be found on social media because he doesn't exist. If you have any questions or suggestions for the Death Don't Do Fiction crew, they can be reached at aiptmoviespod@gmail.com, or you can find them on Twitter or Instagram @aiptmoviespod. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris recap the final batch of Not-E3 showcases, including Xbox's bid for an audience, and a somewhat baffling Nintendo Direct. What big game announcements were made? How many forgettable indie showcases were there this time? Let's find out! Then, in Week Old News, the industry follows up its trailer season with its favorite pastime… layoffs! Plus, Xbox exclusivity is weird, September is going to be busy, and more! Finally, in the Checkpoint, Kris gives Mina another go, and enjoys the heck out of both Masters of the Universe and the Star Fox demo. Meanwhile Dan polishes off the recent Resident Evil, still loves Dungeon Crawler Carl, and continues to enjoy Mina the Hollower. Enjoy! See Our Faces!!! Summer showcase season is officially in the books — and Greg, Ty, and Uly have receipts. This week, the crew digs into the data behind all the hype: which games actually won Summer Game Fest according to Steam wishlist numbers and search trends, and why the top three spots all went to remakes and sequels. Code Veronica taking the #1 wishlist spot gets the full breakdown — Ty explains why the game's weird place in Resident Evil canon is exactly the reason people are losing their minds over it, and the crew goes deep on how RE4 and Code Veronica's release timeline essentially screwed Capcom's own franchise order. Ocarina of Time, Persona 6, Insomniac's Wolverine, Gears of War: E-Day, Kingdom Hearts, and Spyro all get their moment. Then things get real when Greg drops the number: Gears of War: E-Day reportedly cost $400 million to make. The crew breaks down why that figure is almost impossible to recoup — comparing it to Spider-Man 2's $300M budget, which needed 7.2 million copies at full price to break even, against Gears of War II's total lifetime sales of 6.75 million copies ever. Factor in that the game launches Day 1 on Game Pass, Xbox's recent price drop, and that Microsoft is quietly aging out its console ambitions — and this gets uncomfortable fast. Also: a full Resident Evil 6 rehabilitation arc, the correct story order to play RE6 (yes, there is one), a debate on whether RE5 deserves a remake, and the moment Greg admits he's never actually played Until Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, or Heavy Rain — despite knowing every detail about all three. Ty does not take this well.Plus — the 8th anniversary of GZ Chop Shop is coming. July 18th. G Fuel is involved. More details dropping in the newsletter soon.Key Topics:Breakdown of Summer Game Fest's top winners and surprises, including Stellar Blade, Gears of War, and Dawn 2.The cultural significance of franchises like Gears of War and Kingdom Hearts. The impact of search trends and search result data on game popularity.Industry analysis: budget estimates, sales figures, and the feasibility of blockbuster hits like Xbox's $400 million exclusive. The debate over remakes: Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and the longevity of classic titles. The complex timeline of Resident Evil remakes and their impact on franchise storytelling.Technical and strategic industry insights, including counterfeit perceptions and hardware shortages. The role of game subscriptions like Game Pass in the financial landscape.Final thoughts on upcoming releases, the state of the industry, and the importance of community engagement.Subscribe to the GZ Press Play Gaming Newsletter for the full written breakdown every Thursday: gz-press-play-gaming-newsletter.beehiiv.com

The stunning and versatile actress reflects on how modeling led her to acting via a 1996 magazine cover; the challenge of finding multi-dimensional parts even as she rose to prominence in horror (two 'Final Destination' and three 'Resident Evil' films), comedy ('Legally Blonde') and superhero ('Heroes') projects; and why the part of Angela Norris opposite Billy Bob Thornton in Taylor Sheridan's dramedy series is a dream come true. Adeline Rudolph just made quite the leap as far as video game adaptations go. While things didn't pan out well for Netflix's Resident Evil series, which was canceled after just one season in 2022, Mortal Kombat II is cruising at the box office. In 2021, director Simon McQuoid kicked off a new iteration of Mortal Kombat feature films with a movie focused on Cole Young (Lewis Tan) that also included a slew of other fan-favorite characters like Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Kano (Josh Lawson), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), and many more. Rudolph didn't just join that ensemble via 2026's Mortal Kombat II. She headlines the film opposite Karl Urban's Johnny Cage. While Johnny Cage's evolution is the focal point of the Earth Realm storyline, Kitana's experience is the heart and soul of the Outworld material and, ultimately, it's Kitana who brings the two sides together. In celebration of Mortal Kombat II's wide release, Rudolph swung by the Collider Ladies Night studio to discuss her journey as an actor thus far, including making her screen debut via The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and lessons learned from Netflix's Resident Evil that she was able to apply to Mortal Kombat II. She also offered up some behind-the-scenes insight into all of Kitana's biggest moments in the movie, which included the film's final shot — all the main characters joining forces to bring back fallen champions. 399 Disclosure Day TMNT Pizza Ocarina Remake Management RegretDoom Scrolling IntroThe Foos are one episode away from 400, and while a big blowout special is still a “real big maybe,” they take a moment to acknowledge the milestone and the long, weird road to getting there. They recap a productive weekend, including house chores and a trip to LA to see Sparta open for Local H opening for The Toadies at the Belasco. Joe nerds out over Sparta's At the Drive-In connection, Local H's two-piece setup that somehow sounds like a full band, and The Toadies delivering plenty from the Possum Kingdom era. Also: a drunk guy in the pit goes way harder than the songs require. This week's Florida story features a fugitive accused of stealing crab legs from Winn-Dixie, then allegedly hiding inside an air conditioner air handler behind ductwork while his girlfriend hides in a closet. Because in Florida, seafood theft apparently turns you into HVAC.Geeking Out starts with Steven Spielberg's new alien thriller Disclosure Day, which opened big and brings Spielberg back into the alien-movie conversation. The Foos talk practical creativity versus AI, including Emily Blunt reportedly creating her alien clicking voice herself instead of using AI.Then it's food and nostalgia: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pizzeria is opening in Santa Monica on June 20, fully decked out with cartoon-style décor, merch, neon turtle faces, and a pizza pickup counter designed like the front of the Turtle Van. They also shout out 50 Burger in Upland as a legit local smash burger spot.Nintendo drops a nostalgia bomb with a Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time remake planned for 2026, plus Switch/Switch 2 news and more from Nintendo Direct. The Foos compare it to the larger trend of remakes and remasters like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy.DC talk continues with Lanterns, the upcoming HBO Max series being pitched like a darker detective drama in the style of True Detective, plus My Adventures with Superman returning with a Reign of Superman-inspired season.Steph also spotlights Larry David's upcoming historical comedy series The Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, which looks exactly like Larry David being dropped into major moments in history and complaining his way through them.Tech Talk makes a brief appearance with Logitech's MobiFold, a tiny foldable portable mouse that sounds surprisingly practical. They also remind listeners that Doug Brody's Shelley: Our Evolution is coming out June 19, and Steph is already deep into the book. Here's What I Would Do gets unusually existential:Michael (Irvine) got the management promotion he worked toward for years, but now misses the hands-on work he actually enjoyed.Rachel (Pasadena) isn't sure whether she wants kids, because both versions of the future — parenthood or child-free life — seem like they could be happy, and choosing one means letting go of the other.ChaptersDoom Scrolling IntroIntroOne episode away from 400 + possible milestone episodeBelasco recap Sparta Local H ToadiesDrunk pit energy during songs that did not need itFlorida fugitive steals crab legs hides in air conditionerGeeking Out Spielberg alien thriller Disclosure DayEmily Blunt practical alien voice vs AITMNT pizzeria opening in Santa Monica June 2050 Burger Upland smash burger shoutoutNintendo Direct Ocarina of Time remake nostalgia bombLanterns HBO Max True Detective superhero vibeMy Adventures with Superman Reign of Superman seasonLarry David historical comedy series previewLogitech MobiFold foldable portable mouseDoug Brody Shelley Our Evolution June 19Here's What I Would Do Promotion regret Michael IrvineHere's What I Would Do Deciding whether to have kids Rachel PasadenaOutro + Doom Scrolling Outro

Another Resident Evil gets the remake treatment with its reveal at Summer Games Fest 2026. Rumours had been rife a week before the show and indeed kicking the presentation off was this 4 minute trailer highlighting Claire's investigation in Paris and subsequent capture. With a slightly new name, Resident Evil Veronica will be a reimagining of this beloved (but poor selling) classic title - and one that is very close to the hearts of a a few us on REP - not all! Summer Game Fest is upon us! But before that, join Patrick, Chia, and Janet as they react to Sony's lengthy State of Play presentation, and why some of the high-profile games left them feeling a little cold (even if they're absolutely going to play them). Plus, what to make of Tomb Raider's AI disclosure? What the heck is a “broughlike”? Do we really need a Rayman Legends remake? Plus, updates on our time with 007 First Light, MapMap, a slew of student games, and more.
