Operator: This is 999. You're through to the police. What is your emergency? Caller: I need to report a crime... Operator: Very good, sir. What would you like to report? Caller: Some children in the park are pulling twigs off a tree. Operator: Ah. Not really a crime, that, sir... Caller: Well, there's also a dead hedgehog in the road, here. Operator: Erm. OK. One of those days... Again, sir, not a crime. Is it causing a hold-up, stopping traffic or anything? Caller: No but it doesn't look great... Operator: As I said, then, not a crime. Caller: OK, well, how about this: Simon Byron dropped a c-bomb on the latest edition of One Life Left. Operator: A what? Caller: A c-bomb. You know? He said the word cu- Operator: Oh! Yes sir, I understand... Caller: Well, it was beeped out but the beep didn't half distress my cat... Operator: Poor thing. Caller: Thank you. Operator: What else happened? Caller: Well, he also talked about almost breaking the law in Sweden and performed an impromptu impression of Bob Hoskins. Operator: Go on... Caller: They talked about the highest grossing video game movies... there was a Ste Curran Fast Three and the "simplicity" of digital ownership was touched on, amongst other things... Operator: OK, right... Caller: They didn't just talk about random stuff, though! They also talked about other recent news items in the world of video games as well as covering listeners' letters. And they reviewed Death Loop, Fire Girl DX, Freshly Frosted and Please Fix The Road, though their review scores are always 7/10 for some reason... Operator: Did you just speak in hyperlinks?! Caller: What? No idea what you're talking about... Personally, I think something should be done. People should write in to the show at team@onelifeleft.com. Maybe tell them if they've actually seen the Warcraft movie, for example. I certainly haven't... Operator: Erm. Caller: Or join the One Life Left Discord channel to tell them what they think of the show there! The link for that is hard to pronounce but it's https://discord.gg/nzcMpvbCpk They could also talk about how bad these show notes are! In this episode, I speak with playwright Joe Janes about the craft of sketch and stand-up comedy. We cover a lot of turf including academia in playwriting, character and the four basic human wants, improvisation and playwriting, the rules of sketch, lacking humor in sketch and whether sketches have to be funny. We also touch base finding opportunities and self-producing (a common theme lately), letting go of the reins, bad habits and the benefits of reading your work out loud. There's so much we cover in this episode, it might behoove you to listen to it multiple times, or at least take notes. I learned so much in this episode. I hope you walk away with so much more. Joe Janes is an Emmy Award winning writer and teaches comedy writing and improvisation at The Second City and Columbia College in Chicago. He has published three books of his staged work - 365 Sketches, 50 Plays, and Seven Deadly Plays. His full-length plays include Metaluna and the Science of the Mind Revue, A Hard Day's Journey Into Night, Our Christian Nation, The Incident, and Always Never. In this episode Dr. Arianna answers a listener who's friend battles with the distortion of “all-or-nothing” thinking. This friend thinks in extremes and uses language like “always, never and everyone.” The episode ends by going through a mediation that will help you overcome this negative thought pattern. In psychology we call negative thoughts “cognitive distortions” which is a faulty or inaccurate thinking, perception or belief. Back in February, Dark Horse announced an August release for the print edition of Jordi Lafebre's "Always Never" in English: https://www.darkhorse.com/Blog/3446/fall-back-love-always-never It's a book I had reviewed after its digital release in 2021: https://www.pipelinecomics.com/always-never-by-jordi-lafebre-review/ I really hope this gives the book a new life in North America. It's a great one. Also, it prompts a little wild speculation from me about Dark Horse and other projects of Lafebre's... My theory makes sense and fits the gaps in the narrative, but is it true? I hope so.... A Refusal to look inward. You spot it you got it. When the crime doesn’t fit the punishment. “Make a choice. Just decide. What it's gonna be, who you're gonna be, how you're gonna do it. Practical steps you can take right now Week: Decide what is going to change in your life. Month: Put steps in place to move forward. Have a friend who will hold you accountable. The Double Toasted podcast review a new movie today called SOMETIMES ALWAYS NEVER.
In the latest collaboration between director Carl Hunter and writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce SOMETIMES ALWAYS NEVER follows a stylish tailor and wayward father, Alan, (Bill Nighy) who is has spent a big chunk of his adult life playing the word game Scrabble. At the expense of his other relationships Alan has spent years searching tirelessly for his missing son, Michael, who stormed out over a game of Scrabble. With a body to identify and his family torn apart, Alan must repair the relationship with his youngest son, Jack (Sam Riley) and identify an online player who he thinks could be Michael, so he can finally move on and reunite his family. A quirky mystery / comedy starring the BAFTA winner Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Shaun of the Dead), SOMETIMES ALWAYS NEVER is a story about redemption, family, and finding the right words. Director Carl Hunter joins us to talk about his on-going work with screenwriter working with Cottrell-Boyce, and the photo that convinced lead actor Bill Nighy to join the project and striking the right visual look for his thoughtful, wryly funny film. For news, virtual screenings and updates goto: sometimes-always-never.com About the filmmaker: Carl Hunter is a director, screenwriter and also the bass player for Liverpool band, The Farm, who had a number 1 LP, Spartacus in 1991, 3 top 10 singles and spent a total of 50 weeks in the official top 40s for both LPs and singles. He has been making films, producing and directing, since the late 1990s and in 2019 he directed his first feature film, Sometimes, Always, Never, starring Bill Nighy and produced by Hurricane Films. In 2007, Carl produced and co-wrote the feature film, 'Grow Your Own.' He's currently developing his next ideas with writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

False decision points are when you feel cornered into making a decision. They are false because in fact, you may have misidentified the root problem that needs to be addressed, or because you have not evaluated all of your options.Even the most mentally strong, motivated and open-minded people can fall victim to false decision points in their life. It happens because we crave certainty. And making a decision (even if we haven’t done the work to be confident it’s the best choice) often leads people to believe they have regained some of that certainty they desire.False decision points commonly arise when:Your considering a promotionYou feel a lack of creativity or growthYou're under a significant amount of stressPersonal and professional goals conflictHow to recognize false decision points: “But that’s not possible because…”“Always” & “Never” statements“This is just how it is…”“I don’t have any other options.”For full show notes, go to: https://jenniferspoelma.com/podcast-feed/false-decision-points
Jen Hartley aka Yushh @yushh established herself as one of Bristol’s most exciting new faces on the scene. As a local selector, she has turned her attention to the groundswell of talent the city has to offer when it comes to the cross-section of bass music with her new label project, Pressure Dome @pressuredome. On this inaugural VA release, she proposes us a beautiful selection of artists, tied together by syncopated rhythms and broken beats, where each producer brings their own style, tempo and atmosphere. The release provides a range and depth that reflects Bristol’s musical versatility, from newcomer Syz whose contribution follows highly praised releases on Only Ruins and Brotherhood Sound System, to some of the city’s newest party starters to rise through the ranks. All five tracks ooze individuality, yet subtly tie together with influences and sounds of a city that naturally nurtures progressive experimentalism. Pressure Dome’s offering is a fine example of burgeoning collective, with like-minded producers set on an uncompromising approach to the broken beat. We have the pleasure to share with you the track "Always, Always, Nevr On Time" from Yushh, showcasing intricate percussion and delicate melodies that roll with energy over subby baselines.

Using absolute language to describe a person's behavior ends up generalizing, and that ends up painting an inaccurate picture of the person. A picture that puts them on the defensive, creating distance.
