Entering his 22nd year as a professor and 28th as an exhibiting artist, Professor Sanderson currently serves as the sixth Director of the Pembroke Undergraduate Research and Creativity Center and as Professor of Art teaching Printmaking and Drawing. Supporting undergraduate research across the campus including everything from scientific and humanities-based research to jazz composition, the Pembroke Undergraduate Research and Creativity Center holds a yearly Symposium showcasing student work. In our conversation, Professor Sanderson shares his own story, from growing up on the farm, to work in computer science, which led to development as a printmaker, and his work with arts organizations such as the Artnauts Collective, combining art and social justice initiatives in Ukraine, Sarajevo, South Korea, Bosnia, Columbia, and many other locations. Since 2013, Professor Sanderson has served as Workshop Coordinator for Frogman's Print Workshops on the campus of the University of Iowa, the largest printmaking workshop in the United States. Sanderson holds two Bachelor of Science degrees from Colorado State University-Pueblo, in Printmaking/Drawing and in Computer Information Systems. He earned his Master of Fine Art degree in Art with a specialty of Printmaking from the University of South Dakota, where he studied under 20th century print and paper artist Lloyd Menard. Prior to his career as an artist, Sanderson worked as a computer programmer and systems analyst. Since 1995, Professor Sanderson has exhibited in over 575 venues in 65 countries. Recently he has shown in Poland, Palestine, Chile, Bosnia, Uganda, Cambodia, Colombia and Ukraine. He has also held 37 university lectures in 27 states and participated in 81 collaborative studio projects. In 2018 he was the first visiting artist in the West Virginia University Master Printmaking series. He also is a long-time member of the Artnauts international art group, which uses the visual arts as a tool for addressing global change. Professor Sanderson's work appeared in  the nationally acclaimed “Re-Riding History” exhibit, which featured works by 72 contemporary native and non-native artists who responded to the events surrounding the 1875-1878 capture, relocation and imprisonment of 72 Plains Indian warriors at Fort Marion, St. Augustine, Florida. Professor Sanderson was recently awarded a number of grants to use his technical and artistic backgrounds to design and prototype art equipment that is cost-effective and accessible to those with disabilities. His current body of work combines laser cutters, CNC machines, 3D printers, and digital drawings with the traditional tools of the printmaking and drawing studios. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

From its opening in 1822, the Fulton Market was an essential part of life in old New York, selling vegetables grown on Long Island, fruit harvested in Cuba, lobsters taken from the waters of Maine, chickens raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and oysters–and fish–hauled forth from New York harbor itself. Over the decades Fulton Market became known as Fulton Fish Market, dominated by wholesale dealers in fish that came not only from New York Harbor, but from all over the world. What Chicago became for beef, New York became for fish. “A business that specializes in fish,” writes my guest Jonathan Rees, “has to regularize an inevitably uneven supply through a mixture of knowledge and technology.” Rees's book The Fulton Fish Market: A History is therefore not simply the story of the creation, life, and decline of a New York place, but a description of that place where community, politics, economy, nature, and culture all came together on the New York waterfront. Jonathan Rees is Professor of History at Colorado State University-Pueblo. This is his third appearance on the podcast; he was last on in episode 222 to describe the strange career of Harvey Wiley.   For Further Information Previous conversations with Jonathan were about refrigeration, and the purity and nutritional value of mass-produced food. It doesn't take too much of a guess to figure out why he's now writing about fish markets. Jonathan Rees and I talked briefly about Joseph Mitchell, a legendary New Yorker columnist not least because he eventually had a case of writer's block so massive that it transcended the metaphor "block". Here is Mitchell's book Up in the Old Hotel, in which the Fulton Fish Market is essentially a supporting character, if not primary character, and more on those thirty years without writing.

The 1960s are famous in the American political memory as a time of leftist revolution. Millions marched against racial segregation and the Vietnam War, women's liberation went mainstream, and the fight for lesbian and gay rights began. But the 60s were also a time of counter-revolution, a moment when many of the radical forces that became prominent on January 6, 2021 really began to gain momentum. In Episode 15, we talked with historian Angie Maxwell about how fundamentalist white Southerners flooded into Protestant churches and seminaries but a similar radicalization process happened within LDS Mormonism, the religion that has an outsized influence on the politics of Utah, Idaho, Arizona, and other Western states. Harris, a Professor of History and Director of Legal Studies at Colorado State University-Pueblo joins us to talk about the many ways that far-right activists in Mormonism influenced and intersected with counterparts in white evangelicalism. While Mormonism is often thought of as a sort of obscure sect that just does its own thing, it's actually been highly integrated into the development of American right-wing extremism. Harris's excellent book “Watchman on the Tower: Ezra Taft Benson and the Making of the Mormon Right” is featured in this episode, but he has several other ones worth checking out, including one coming soon about Mormonism and race. Fighting for an opportunity to make the 53-man roster, Deyon Sizer, DT, Broncos, joins Pro Mindset Podcast host, Craig Domann. Currently entering his third Denver Broncos training camp, he knows the challenges and opportunities each athlete faces on the 90-man roster. Deyon is a Denver area product who attended Colorado State University – Pueblo, where he was a very prominent college football player at the DII level. In the past two seasons, Deyon spent time on the practice squad and last season he was on the active roster three-times. Deyon and Craig, talk about the Pro Mindset® that an athlete must have during NFL's training camp.Specifically, they discussed the merits of having a goal beyond making the team. As Domann points out, “Most NFL rookies only have the goal of making the team and this is what limits them. They want to get paid for playing the game that they played for fun their entire life. However, if all they aspire to do is to make the 53 and everyone else makes the 53, how did they set themselves apart from everyone else?” Domann shares with Deyon, the mindset of shooting for the stars in terms of setting his mind on becoming a starter this season. This also brings along with it, the responsibility of performing, working, competing, and knowing the playbook consistent with being a starter. It also means that Deyon needs to be a leader. One of the things that Craig has done over his three decades of representing players is teach them to act like a vet. One of the reasons why rookies don't often make it is because they act like one. Typically, rookies give the coaches the impression they are not prepared and not ready for the big time. Rookies normally stick together and have conversations that center around, “Do you think you're going to make it?” Those are wasted conversations that don't help the player make the team. Enjoy this podcast as you get an inside look at the mindset that it takes to make the 53-man roster. It's not only a physical game, but a mindset game as well. Follow Deyon and root for him as he competes in the 2021 Broncos Training Camp.

Ezra Taft Benson is perhaps the most controversial apostle-president in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For nearly fifty years he delivered impassioned sermons in Utah and elsewhere, mixing religion with ultraconservative right-wing political views and conspiracy theories. His teachings inspired Mormon extremists to stockpile weapons, predict the end of the world, and commit acts of violence against their government. The First Presidency rebuked him, his fellow apostles wanted him disciplined, and grassroots Mormons called for his removal from the Quorum of the Twelve. Yet Benson was beloved by millions of Latter-day Saints, who praised him for his stances against communism, socialism, and the welfare state, and admired his service as secretary of agriculture under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Using previously restricted documents from archives across the United States. Matthew L. Harris breaks new ground as the first to evaluate why Benson embraced a radical form of conservatism, and how under his leadership Mormons became the most reliable supporters of the Republican Party of any religious group in America. In our next conversation, we're going to talk to Dr. Matt Harris of Colorado State University-Pueblo.  We will talk about the “one-drop rule.”  How is it that Mormons determined blackness, especially if they were biracial families? We'll also talk about a Supreme Court decision in the 1960s that legalized interracial marriage. https://youtu.be/uDNsRXSSTbU Matt:  What is interesting about this is that depending on the state, these laws are very fluid in the early 20th century.  I tell my students, we teach civil rights and we talk about this.  In fact, we discuss the book Loving vs. Virginia, which is the Supreme Court case that strikes down these miscegenation laws, declares them unconstitutional.  This is 1967. But anyway, what's interesting is that in the early 20th century these miscegenation laws are very fluid.  One state might say it's one-quarter.  Another state might say it's one-eighth, or one-sixteenth.  I joke with my students sometimes that on Monday, a black man can marry a white woman because they fit within the parameters of the law, but then they change the law on Wednesday and now it's no longer constitutional. Don't forget to check out our previous conversation with Matt, and you might want to check out our interview with Dr. Paul Reeve, where we talk about where Woodruff incorrectly quotes Brigham Young referring to anyone with "one-drop" of African blood not being eligible for the priesthood.  (The quote is NOT accurate.)  Check out our conversation….. How do you determine blackness? Is one-drop enough?
