Bruce Sudano is a singer, songwriter, and storyteller whose music draws deeply from a lifetime of love, heartache, struggle, and spirituality. A true New Yorker at heart, Bruce formed his first band at age 13 and was performing in clubs not long after, quickly immersing himself in the vibrant local music scene. He first made waves on the charts in 1969 with "Ball of Fire," co-written with Tommy James, followed by the 1970 hit "Tighter, Tighter" with his band Alive N Kickin', which opened for acts like Chicago and Frank Zappa. In 1977, Bruce co-founded the band Brooklyn Dreams, which signed with Millennium Records and soon found success collaborating with Donna Summer. Together, they co-wrote the chart-topping hit “Bad Girls” and appeared on her Top 5 single “Heaven Knows.” Bruce and Donna also began a personal relationship, eventually marrying.Over the decades, Sudano has continued to evolve as a solo artist. His latest album, Talkin' Ugly Truth, Tellin' Pretty Lies, showcases his signature blend of soul, rhythm, and lyrical introspection. The album features the anthemic “Make The World Go Away,” produced by hitmaker Ken Lewis, and the heartfelt duet “Two Bleeding Hearts” with legendary singer/songwriter Valerie Simpson.Highlights from Toby Gribben's Friday afternoon show on Shout Radio. Episode 007 of You Liang's Far East Taste locks into a high-energy groove — blending chunky basslines, slick vocal cuts, and techy percussion that's built for movement. This month's mix leans into feel-good rhythms and mainroom-ready hooks, delivering a sharper, more accessible sound while keeping underground sensibilities intact. The journey kicks off with a rework of Marshall Jefferson's iconic anthem before dipping into UK garage nostalgia and jackin' house grit. Mid-set, You Liang unveils two originals: Maybe Tonight — already supported by Don Diablo — and Not The Same, teased here as an ID. From extended cuts by Dannic, KREAM, and Victor Tellagio to bass-driven standouts by Chris Lake and Aleksey Kraft, the second half charges into peak-time with zero filler. As always, Far East Taste is crafted in Tokyo and tuned for global floors, wherever your night takes you. ⚡️Like the Show? Click the [Repost] ↻ button so more people can hear it!

Estelle is old school. With a modern twist yes, but nonetheless, if this most eclectic of artists leans in any particular direction it is towards ‘classic'. She even says it in one her own songs; "I'm not of-the-moment. I am a classic, yeah, I live at the MoMA” (The Life, opening track of her 2012 album All of Me). She is quite the proverbial eclectic artist - edgy but not (un)necessarily shocking, traditional but modern enough to make her point in the era of precision-tool song production, and forever flitting between a dozen sub-genres (across hip hop, R&B, pop, reggae and soul). Classify Estelle at your peril. New album Stay Alta has throwback quality to it that is extremely welcome in the current climate. Although it was conceived as a post-pandemic record, it works effectively as a tonic for the turbulent times we are living through right now. It channels Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Stevie Wonder and…Melba Moore. Like records by those artists, Stay Alta is an organic listen and auto-tune is strictly off limits. But somehow, it is modern. Stay Alta themes include gratitude, celebration, joy and defiance but not the migraine-inducing platitudinal kind - just the straightforward take it or leave it kind. You should take it. It is album number six across a career of two decades, so Estelle does not subscribe to FOBF, the “fear of being forgotten” that is the scourge of many modern pop artists in today's fast-flowing pop scene. Instead, she is happy to take her time. There is something to note in her approach about time, longevity, and lineage. Estelle seems acutely aware of whose shoulders she stands on. It's not unconnected to the fact that The Estelle Show (her 5-days a week Apple Music radio show, which won an esteemed Gracie Award for Women In Media) provides a platform to put her fellow peers and new artists in context alongside legendary artists. Classics and new classics sit side by side - why can't broadcast radio pull that off? Anyhow, credit to Estelle. It was her idea, her pitch to Apple, and now it's her show. And that is how Estelle rolls. At this stage, she is a serious artist living outside of the mainstream and not really in need of a hit anyhow. But yes, she is a songwriter and an artist with the potential to strike at any time. She knows where she is from and how to reach deep into that well. “I see credit and beauty in artists who know where they come from because you then have a well to pull from. If I know funk and I'm a new era funk artist I know where to find that bassline. If I'm a drum & bass artist I can go to that Roni Size beat and sample it or repurpose it. Nothing's new under the sun”. Damn right. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Reference Source: NPR Code Switch: Dispatches from the living memory of trans people of colorIdentity, Stealth, and Staying Submarine When the Wolves Come OutI heard a line on Code Switch that stuck with me: “I'm staying in my lane. I can't speak for you.”This is my lane. I'm not your hero or blueprint. I'm just a man with a few stories — potatoes in a rock soup — about how identity can be sanctuary, then trap, then survival trick when the world turns mean.I first learned what I call the vampire door in Norwich, England, 1990. By day it was farmers and muddy boots. By night some of those same men slipped through the door of the town's lone gay disco. A pint in hand, glitter on the collar, nod to the bouncer. An orbit under Donna Summer. Then cloak back up before sunrise. It was a door you stepped through when you needed to be seen — and stepped back out when you needed to be safe. I carried that logic home with me: the door always swings both ways. But I'd felt that door long before England. At GW in 1988, I was living blocks from Dupont Circle — one of the loudest, bravest queer neighborhoods in America. Back then D.C. was neon and sweat: drag races on 17th, basement bars, whole blocks that felt like portals. My friends and I — queer, straight, shape-shifters — learned fast: the bar at seven is family, the bar at eleven is the pack. If you don't feel the shift, you don't make it home.Later I saw the same logic online. The WELL, The MetaNetwork — early “walled gardens” that needed a password, a vouch. Small. Sacred. Not because they hid treasure, but because meaning leaks when the wrong eyes peek in. That's why I still love my Freemason lodge. Anyone can see the charity dinner — but when the doors close, there's a man with a sword. Context is fragile. Leak the lodge, salt the garden.People hear stealth and think it's fear. Sometimes stealth is just strategy. Like a concealed-carry instructor once told me: “The best weapon is the one nobody knows you have.” Same for your identity. Don't print it on a flag when you know the street outside is still 1950. Sometimes staying submarine is how you get to YAWP again tomorrow.Walt Whitman's YAWP is America's big queer shout — but this country loves it embalmed. The living version it fears. The louder you glow, the more antibodies you summon. You become uranium: radiant, potent, and a perfect fuel for the machine that'll spin you up and point you back at yourself. That's how the pack does it now. Not clubs or chains, but money and legal twists. Look at Skrmetti: SCOTUS upholds Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Or Planned Parenthood: the Court says states can block Medicaid for everything — contraception, cancer checks, not just abortion. Sanctions turned inward. The message is simple: amputate the piece that makes us squirm, or starve. The bar at seven is your found family. The bar at eleven is the werewolves. And the pack is bigger than a club — it's donors, lawyers, ghost rules from 1950 still sitting in the court. You can't extrapolate the sweaty Pride float to the rest of the country. The vibe shift is real. The pack is always circling. So here's my lane. I was never the hero. I was the shape-shifter who knew when to slip back through the vampire door before the vibe turned. Pretty enough to drink your Absolut — smart enough to leave before you asked me to explain.I'm not telling you to hide forever. I'm telling you: visibility is power if you understand how the pack moves. Stealth is not shame — it's strategy. Context is a garden. Spill it for clout, and you salt the soil. Your YAWP is holy. So is your cloak.Stay submarine when you need to.Always gone before eleven.

In 1975, Boston native Donna Summer released her single, “Love to Love You Baby,” a sexy disco tune featuring shimmering strings and a funky bassline that would become a global smash. Fifty years later, her hometown will celebrate Summer's artistry and the lasting impact of her work with its eleventh Donna Summer Disco Party on City Hall Plaza. Sous ses airs hédonistes, pas prise de tête, le disco est-il aussi une musique politique? Quel a été lʹinfluence du disco sur la mode, le design? We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Jimmy Webb. ABOUT JIMMY WEBBJimmy Webb emerged as a superstar songwriter and arranger in 1967 when two of his songs – The 5th Dimension's “Up, Up and Away” and Glen Campbell's “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” - were among the five nominees for the Grammy's Song of the Year award. He went on to write a string of major hits for Campbell, including “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” "Where's the Playground Susie,” “Honey Come Back,” and many others. Additionally, he penned “MacArthur Park,” which was a hit for a diverse range of artists, including Richard Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, and Donna Summer; “The Worst That Could Happen,” which was a Top 5 hit for The Brooklyn Bridge; “Didn't We,” which was recorded by Thelma Houston, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand; “All I Know,” which became a Top 10 hit for Art Garfunkel; “The Moon's a Harsh Mistress,” which has been recorded by Joe Cocker, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, and Josh Groban; and “If These Walls Could Speak,” which was recorded by Glen Campbell, Amy Grant, Nanci Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. Others who've covered material from the Jimmy Webb songbook include Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, The Four Tops, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, The Association, Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Cass Elliot, Harry Nilsson, Nancy Wilson, Cher, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Nick Cave, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Sheena Easton, David Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, R.E.M., Aimee Mann, America, Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Peggy Lee, Bette Midler, James Taylor, Carrie Underwood, Dwight Yoakam, and The Highwaymen (consisting of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson), who took Jimmy's song “Highwayman” to #1, earning him a Grammy for Country Song of the Year. As an artist, he has released more than a dozen albums. One of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet, Jimmy is the only individual to win Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Additionally, he has received ASCAP's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Influential Songwriter Award from the National Music Publishers Association, and the Academy of Country Music's prestigious Poets Award. In 2015 he was named among Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Jimmy's memoir, The Cake and the Rain, details his formative years and early career through 1973. It's available now from St. Martin's Press.
This episode of the Planet LP Podcast, hosted by Ted Asregadoo, delves into the unexpected musical blind spots of even the most accomplished music journalists. Ted is joined by prolific music writer and co-host of The Record Player podcast, Jeff Giles (Popdose, Ultimate Classic Rock, Diffuser FM, Jefitoblog, and Harmonic.fm). The discussion centers on highly-regarded albums that, despite their critical acclaim or widespread popularity, have somehow been overlooked by these experienced listeners. Prepare for candid revelations as Ted and Jeff explore records that often elicit the incredulous response: "Wait, you've NEVER listened to that?!" The episode features a diverse selection of genres and eras. It begins with Gang of Four's Entertainment! (1979), examining its groundbreaking sound and lasting influence on popular music. Next, the focus shifts to Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow (1967). While acknowledging its iconic status and memorable tracks, the host shares a surprisingly critical perspective on this San Francisco classic. Finally, the conversation turns to Donna Summer's Bad Girls (1979). The episode explores its commercial success, Grammy recognition, and even an unexpected link to New Order, while posing the question of how such a significant album could have been a "miss" for a dedicated music aficionado. Tune in for an engaging and often surprising exploration of influential albums that, for some, remained undiscovered territory.
