Sarah Jae is back in the booth after a few busy months and she has not held back. HF310 is stacked with disco sparkle, chunky house drums and a few cheeky reworks that will have you clocking every vocal from the first bar. From Crazy P and Cerrone through to Todd Terry and ATFC, this one glides between feel good nostalgia and proper dancefloor punch. There are nods to Donna Summer, New Order and Depeche Mode via fresh edits, plus some slick modern heat from Prospa and Disclosure. It is a welcome return and she sounds locked in. Turn it up. Dominic Carter tackles controversial questions about the transgender community following a mass shooting in Canada and a beauty pageant scandal. Things heat up when caller Teddy from Yonkers debates Dominic on Black history and whether Trump is a racist. Later, the show takes a wild, hilarious turn when a listener suggests an X-rated solution for curing Trump Derangement Syndrome, leaving Dominic speechless and producer Matt Blaze reaching for the Donna Summer tracks. I first published this episode two and a half years ago in June 2023, in commemoration of the death of the great Tina Turner. As always when I take on such an iconic figure, I try to give a different perspective on the artist in question than one would normally encounter. For this reason, I chose to frame Tina within the context of the many other female pop artists of color who emigrated to Europe and the UK. I have devoted a lot of time, space, and research to the Black opera singers who came here, but there is an equally fascinating story to be told about the pop singers of many eras and genres, who also chose to make Europe their home. Though this episode focuses primarily on Tina and some of the less-explored material throughout her career, I seek to contextualize her by also discussing the many African American singers, from Joséphine Baker to Donna Summer to Nina Simone to Dee Dee Bridgewater, who either spent formative time in Europe or settled there permanently. Along with the aforementioned favorites, I also focus on lesser-known artists such as Beauty Milton, Vickie Henderson, and Betty Dorsey, including a brief introduction to each of four singers who will be featured in their own episodes during Black History Month: Adelaide Hall (coming on Monday!), Elisabeth Welch, Bertice Reading, and Salena Jones (who just recently celebrated her 82nd birthday). Count on Countermelody (and me!) to always bring you something a little different! Countermelody is the podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.
Carl Clarke is the sort of guest who makes you pause mid-intro and think: how is one person allowed to have this much life on a CV? DJ, chef, author, filmmaker, raver, and yes, a full-blown chicken deity, Carl has lived about six parallel careers, usually at the same time, often on zero sleep, and always with a story that somehow gets even more unhinged as it goes on. Carl takes us from a 15-year-old runaway with £200 and a half-baked plan for France that accidentally ends in Jersey, to the brutal, hilarious reality of old-school hotel kitchens (including a banquet tale involving a missing blue plaster that you will not forget). From there it is trench-foot potato prep, the Marines, and a world suddenly cracked open: ships, Florida, discipline, trouble, and the kind of hard-won perspective you only get when you have been dropped into the deep end repeatedly and survived. Then comes the rave years: Turnmills, illegal parties, global gigs, and a Buenos Aires night so surreal Maradona is literally standing behind the decks while Carl is stretching out Donna Summer like a religious experience. And just when you think he will stay in the chaos, he swerves back into kitchens because he cannot help himself. Marco. Fear. Perfectionism. The cold larder. The kind of intensity that makes you laugh while you are quietly grateful you are not the one on the pass. From there, the stories go truly international: Dublin's Clarence during its moment, improvised custard hacks that somehow impress the right people, Harvey Nichols in Istanbul, envelope-thick cash, and the kind of hospitality madness you only hear from someone who has actually been there, lived it, and can tell it with zero varnish. And threaded through it all is the thing Carl does better than almost anyone: taking serious technique and turning it into food people really want, paving the way for the pop-up boom and ultimately giving London Chicken Shop royalty in Chick 'n' Sours and Chicken Shop. Strap in, because this one is a ride.Pre Order Ben's Incredible Book - All You Can Eat - By Clicking Here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/All-You-Can-Eat-British/dp/1805221523 Hosted on Acast. This week we're sharing a series of episodes that capture one of our favorite themes on Second Act Stories: the moment when life changes key. These Key Changes episodes feature people whose lives have been shaped by music: some who left it behind for something new; others who found their way to it later than expected. Together, they're the stories we return to when we want to show how reinvention really works, not as a clean break, but as a shift in rhythm, perspective, and purpose. Whether you're a longtime listener or just discovering the show, these episodes reflect the heart of the podcast: bold pivots, unexpected harmony, and second acts that still have plenty to say. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is a rock and roll legend. He was the founding lead guitarist in Steely Dan, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Doobie Brothers. As a hired gun, he's played with a who's who of music royalty, including Linda Ronstadt, Donna Summer, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Dolly Parton, Carly Simon… the list goes on and on. From the time he was a child, the mechanically inclined Baxter loved taking things apart to see how they worked and putting them back together. He became an expert guitar repair technician and built custom guitars. He traded a custom white Fender Stratocaster he built in the 1960s to Jimi James, who would later re-emerge as the legendary Jimi Hendrix. In the 1980s, Skunk parlayed his more-than-casual interest in all things technical into a career as a missile defense consultant. After writing a paper that was quickly classified, he received the necessary clearances and now regularly consults with the U.S. government, the Pentagon and the Joint Chiefs on topics including counterterrorism and wargaming. Skunk just released a new solo album, his first, called Speed of Heat. Please enjoy our exciting deep dive into the second act of one of rock's greatest guitarists. ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. Send us a textHappy New Year! DJ Paulie and Brother Lou are back to kick off the year with a bang. In this jam-packed episode, the brothers debut brand-new segments, dive into some wild true-crime stories, and hand the reins to Britt for a countdown that explores the sparks that ignited musical revolutions. Whether you are looking for nostalgia, laughs, or deep dives into pop culture history, this episode has it all.In This Episode:• The Countdown: The Music That Started the Party Britt takes us through a chronological journey of songs that didn't just top the charts—they shifted the culture. This list features the tracks that lit the fuse for entire genres, including George McCrae's disco-igniting "Rock Your Baby," Blondie's genre-bending "Rapture," and the grunge explosion of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The set also covers game-changers from Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, Run DMC, Dr. Dre, and Britney Spears.• New Segment: Stay or Skip? The brothers introduce a new movie review game. When you stumble across a classic film while channel surfing, do you stay and watch it, or skip it? Paulie and Lou debate 80s cinema staples like Flashdance, Top Gun, Cocktail, Footloose, Dirty Dancing, and Prince's Purple Rain.• Busted (formerly Stupid Criminals) The guys share a fresh batch of criminal mishaps, including a car thief who blamed aliens for teleporting him into a BMW, a driver who tried to use a UPC label from a package of chicken wings as a license plate, and a holiday family argument that ended with a thrown Christmas ham. Plus, an international story involving the theft—and swallowing—of a Fabergé egg.• Rock Talk with Todd Snyder Todd returns with a deep dive titled "Selling the Party." He explores the business of rebellion and how underground movements like Punk, New Wave, Hair Metal, and Grunge eventually get packaged, polished, and sold to the masses.• TV Time: One and Done A look back at cult classic TV shows that were cancelled after just one season. The brothers discuss whether shows like Freaks and Geeks, My So-Called Life, Firefly, and Almost Human are worth the watch today.• Random Facts Did you know Australia is wider than the moon? Or that Psycho was the first American film to show a toilet flushing? Welcome to the New Year. We've all made it. I was working like a dog over the Xmas / NY period so it's taken me a bit of time to get to the January '26 edition of UP! This set has a mix of classic, older songs with fresh, new remixes as well as some current charting hit songs. Kicking of the set is the amazing smash hit song "Man I Need" by Olivia Dean given a killer remix by Apollo. I love this song and Apollo maintains the integrity of the song with his remix. Division 4 has covered one of my favourite hits from the 70's, "If I Can't Have You" and Stephen Jusko & DJ Blacklow deliver a sexy, house mix of Kylie's sultry classic "Slow". Twenty year old American singer Sombr also gets the Division 4 treatment on "Undressed". The middle of the set has great house tracks from Raye, Taylor Swift and Joel Corry ft. Jennifer Lopez. Dirty Disco features four stellar remixes in this set. Two classics come from Donna Summer and La Bouche respectively along with Katseye's "Gabriela". The closing song is an original song from Mark and his writing partner Ryan. This song was inspired by "Wicked" but is not from the films. It is beautifully written, sung and produced and I see it becoming a gay anthem on future dance floors. Again, an enormous thank you to Mark for giving me this song and asking me for my feedback on it. I think it's pretty obvious that I love it. It's also my brother's birthday today so Happy Birthday big bro. This is dedicated to you. Let's lookout for and support each other in the New Year. In his new book B-Sides: A Flipsided History of Pop (Headpress, 2023), Andy Cowan explores a century of music b-sides. Pop music would be a different beast without the B-Side. Music history is riven with songs deemed throwaway that revolted against their lowly status and refused to be denied. Be it rock'n'roll's national anthem ('Rock Around The Clock'), disco's enduring game-changer ('I Feel Love') or hip-hop's most notorious dis track ('Hit 'Em Up'), all three started life as the so-called 'lesser' track on releases primed for maximum chart impact. But the B-side has done much more than make stars of Bill Haley, Donna Summer and 2Pac. Whether it was the Beatles, the Kinks and the Yardbirds in the 60s, Elton John, the Who and Queen in the 70s, Depeche Mode, the Cure and Prince in the 80s, or Oasis, Pulp and Radiohead in the 90s, the B-side allowed many of the world's greatest artists freedom to experiment with no commercial constraints in an age where physical product ruled the roost. A quickfire A-Z of 500+ flips, B-SIDE is the first serious examination of the format's covert role in pushing the musical envelope. Best read with one eye on YouTube and one ear on a streaming service, its revelations will prick up the ears of music fans of all persuasions. This very special episode of Synthetic Dreams, features a conversation with legendary songwriter and producer Pete Bellotte. Pete's extraordinary journey began in the basement of Munich's Arabella Sheraton Hotel, home to Giorgio Moroder's groundbreaking Musicland Studios. There, as Moroder's right-hand man and a visionary in his own right, Pete helped shape a sound that would change music forever. Over the course of his career, he has co-written and produced more than 500 songs, earning two Grammy nominations for Donna Summer's Bad Girls album and single. From his early days touring with R&B band Linda Laine & The Sinners to his first major hit, Son of My Father, Pete quickly emerged as a hitmaker. Yet it was his pioneering work with Donna Summer that solidified his legacy—blending electronic innovation with bold, conceptual storytelling inspired by his lifelong love of literature. It's safe to say that I Feel Love stands as one of the greatest dance tracks ever—a legendary song whose influence on pop and dance music still resonates today. A lesson in "diva house and horniness" from a modern New York darling. Ask Kilopatrah Jones who their favourite DJ is, and they'll give you an unequivocal answer: Junior Vasquez. And the influence is telling. Both born and raised in Queens, the two share a sense of house as a life force. Not in a new-age, spiritual sense. For Jones, it means being "sweaty, panting and free." The NYC DJ can play anything from techno to drum & bass, but when playing house, there's a particular sense of clarity: they understand the genre in the same lineage as Vasquez, Larry Levan and his peers, as the sound of reinvention, transgression, glamour and joy. Across the following two hours, RA.1013 immerses you in that world. It feels like walking into the Sound Factory at peak-time, bodies in glorious motion, fog thick in the air. The Lot Radio resident runs through familiar classics, bringing it home with a gag-inducing sweep of Donna Summer, Celine Dion, CeCe Peniston—and fittingly ends with Madonna, a wink to Jones's hero and his defining moment, "If Madonna Calls." Jones' RA Mix also reasserts the idea that clubs should be a place of joy. Not only for our individual needs and fulfillment, but as a political act—especially for marginalised folk. Arriving at a time when systemic regression and cultural decay feels increasingly pervasive, they is a model for what DJs and dance floors can, and arguably should be. As they put it, "I'm just so happy and grateful to be alive and in this body." Find the tracklist and Q&A at ra.co/podcast/1032

Send us a textEddie stops by the show to discuss the hit song he wrote, 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot', his last CD, 'Film School', and so much more. ******The first time I heard Pat Benatar's version of ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot,' I was almost arrested for loitering,” laughs internationally lauded Canadian songwriter, producer, performer, and rights advocate Eddie Schwartz about the song he penned that became Benatar's first Top Ten single in 1980. “I was walking down Yonge Street in Toronto when I heard it blasting out of a renowned hair salon and stopped dead in my tracks. I even think I started to drool [laughs]. As I stood there in a state of shock, a salon stylist called the police because of my strange behavior. When they arrived, they ordered me to move or face arrest. When I tried to explain to them that I just heard my song on the radio for the first time, they said, 'Sure, buddy. Move along." Stepping out from behind the curtain and into the spotlight, Schwartz will be physically releasing his full-length studio release on CD, FILM SCHOOL, on November 12, 2025. His songs have been recorded by an astonishing roster: Carly Simon, Joe Cocker, America, Donna Summer, Rita Coolidge, Rascal Flatts, and Mountain, among many others. As a producer, his credits include the Doobie Brothers' Cycles, Carrack's Groove Approved, and his own albums, all resonating with an unmistakable blend of craftsmanship and soul. This six-song EP finds the storied songwriter who authored such classics as Paul Carrack's "Don't Shed a Tear" (1987), The Doobie Brothers' "The Doctor" (1989), the aforementioned “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” (among hundreds of others) on the other side of the studio glass.“It's a difficult time right now and I freely admit to struggling with how to cope with the daily insanity,” says Eddie about the current political and socio-economic climate. Instead of subjecting himself to the barrage of news, he opted instead to return to the studio and write songs. “The moment of writing ‘We Win' was profound for me because I found a way to a more hopeful place that helped with anger, sadness and bewilderment at how we got here,” he explains. “I felt the message of ‘We Win' offered some sanity that I needed to cling to, that I needed to find for myself. And I wanted to share it in the hope it might work for others as well.” After an extended creative drought that plagued him for years, writing the single and subsequent songs on Film School was a turning point for him. “After a number of years doing the Nashville-style co-writing every day—two songs a day, five days a week— I burned out,” Eddie reflects. “The blank page stayed blank for a long time,” he explains of the rigorous demands of being a songwriter in today's music business. The catalyst to cure his writer's block was his frustration with current events. “My struggle to process the world at this moment in time and muster some resolve was what propelled me back in the writing mindset. ‘We Win' acknowledges the pain and the struggle, but professes love means you don't have to succumb to it.”*********If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. In the seventh installment of Sekret Machine Music, Dimitri and Khalid explore the origins and colossal impact of West German electro-pop pioneers Kraftwerk, including: the looming influence of Karlheinz Stockhausen, the Cologne-based Studio for Electronic Music and its murky entanglements with Cultural Cold War operations, the late 60s rise of ‘krautrock' and attempts to forge a new organic post-Nazi German identity, the ambiguities around cultural symbolism on 1974's “Autobahn” and nuclear power on 1975's “Radioactivity”, the US/UK success of their seminal 1977 album “Trans-Europe Express”, Kraftwerk blowing up on African-American radio stations in the northeast and midwest, leaning into the “robotic” German stereotypes, the gradual introduction of Kraftwerk's music onto the discotheque dancefloors of the late 1970s, the birth of disco in gay bathhouses, Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer forever marrying synthesizers and disco together with “I Feel Love”, and the strange proto-MAGA rockist culture war that culminated in Chicago's “Disco Demolition Night” riot of 1979… For access to premium SJ episodes, upcoming installments of DEMON FORCES, and the Grotto of Truth Discord, subscribe at https://patreon.com/subliminaljihad.

Label: Casablanca 884Year: 1977Condition: MPrice: $12.00From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed stock copy, in its original Casablanca factory sleeve. Listening to this, it's easy to see how Summer became the queen of the disco/tech in the late 1970s, helped enormously by great material and by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte's distinctive techno arrangements. The mp3 snippet is an edit from the middle of the track, trying to capture in 2 minutes or less the essence of the music; it's a compromise, though. If you don't have the full 5:53 music, be sure to get it! This is the second pressing, which shows "Side A" for "I Feel Love;" the single was originally released plugging "Can't We Just..." and showing "I Feel Love" as "Side B." The B side is edited from a 4:25 album track. Note: This copy has light storage wear that lowers the Label grade to Near Mint. The wax and audio are pristine.

Richie Zito checks a lot of boxes for the Hustle. For one, he was a noted session guitarist in the 70s for artists like Neil Sedaka, Hellen Reddy, Leif Garrett, and Elton John. Then he eventually became one of the most successful producers of the next decade working with people like Eddie Money ("Take Me Home Tonight"), Cheap Trick ("The Flame"), Bad English ("When I See You Smile"), the Cult, Heart, and Poison. In between, he hooked up with Giorgio Moroder and played on everything he did for a while including "Danger Zone", Berlin, Donna Summer and tons more. There is a mountain of gold to cover in this one and I have a feeling we just scratched the surface. Enjoy! The Hustle Podcast | creating podcasts | Patreon

When "How We Heard It" was just a few weeks old in the summer of 2024, we posted an episode about guilty pleasures, featuring your veteran entertainment critics/hosts Wayne Bledsoe and Chuck Campbell confessing their love for art that other critics frown on - including Wayne's love of sunshine pop and westerns and Chuck's love of exotica and techno music. Some 15 months and 65 shows later, the guilty-pleasures episode remains one of the three most-listened-to episodes of "How We Heard It." So Wayne and Chuck - plus their engineer, songwriter/musician John T. Baker - decided to revisit the topic and own up to more embarrassing affections about what they find entertaining, including artists who often get looked down on (from New Age acts on Windham Hill Records to Peter, Paul and Mary), as well as mainstream musicals and novelty bands. Find out who likes Donna Summer, who likes the Pointer Sisters and who can't hide his love of high-voiced women. One of the guys loves the "bubblegum" rock of Three Dog Night, another loves the "yuppie rock" of Counting Crows and one of them can't tear himself away from those social media video compilations where people scare their loved ones, friends and family. These admissions may ding your hosts' credibility, but they aren't ashamed and don't think you should be ashamed of your guilty pleasures either. Well ... maybe they're a little ashamed. And maybe you should be too. But whatever: Life's too short to worry about the opinions of snobs.
