Justine Jones Employed To Serve Interview: Justine sits down with Scott Penfold on the latest Loaded Radio Podcast to dive deep into the band's latest album Fallen Star, collaborating with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore, drawing inspiration from Scandinavian melodic death metal, and how she balances fronting a crushing metalcore band while running Church Road Records. Justine Jones opens up about the emotional and creative journey behind Fallen Star With their highly anticipated fifth studio album Fallen Star arriving back on April 25, 2025, Employed To Serve are ushering in a new era of modern metalcore—one that fuses melody, rage, and raw vulnerability in equal measure. Frontwoman Justine Jones joins Scott Penfold on this week's Loaded Radio Podcast to pull back the curtain on the emotional core of the new record and what fans can expect from this bold new chapter. In the conversation, Justine breaks down the band's stylistic evolution, citing influences like In Flames and Soilwork as guiding lights behind the album's more melodic and expansive sound. “We wanted to create something that felt bigger, more cinematic,” she says. “There's still heaviness—but it's in service of the emotion, not just brutality for brutality's sake.” 'Atonement' with Will Ramos brings fury and fun to the spotlight The podcast also digs into the band's lead single "Atonement", which features none other than Will Ramos of Lorna Shore on guest vocals. The track rips with intensity, and its Office-inspired music video has been making waves for its tongue-in-cheek take on workplace chaos. According to Justine, the idea for the video came from wanting to show a different side of the band. Recording one song at a time, and what it taught Justine about herself In a new approach for Fallen Star, Justine recorded her vocals one track at a time instead of tackling them all at once. The result? A more focused and emotionally connected performance across the board. “It helped me put everything I had into each individual song,” she explains. “That kind of care really brought the record to life.” Running Church Road Records while fronting one of the UK's heaviest bands Aside from her vocal duties, Justine also co-runs the fiercely independent Church Road Records with guitarist Sammy Urwin. The label has become a hub for some of the most exciting rising acts in heavy music. On the podcast, she talks about how that role complements her work in Employed To Serve and why keeping things DIY still matters in today's oversaturated industry. Touring, the future of the band, and staying grounded through chaos With a new UK headline tour on the horizon and buzz building around Fallen Star, Employed To Serve seem poised to take their place among the elite modern metal acts pushing the genre forward. But Justine remains refreshingly grounded: “We're always just trying to make the best music we can—if it connects with people, that's the real reward.” Bio Employed To Serve is a British metalcore band formed in 2011 in Woking, England, by vocalist Justine Jones and guitarist Sammy Urwin. Initially emerging from the underground scene with a raw, grindcore-influenced sound, the band has evolved to incorporate elements of hardcore punk, mathcore, and death metal. Their discography includes five studio albums: Greyer Than You Remember (2015), The Warmth of a Dying Sun (2017), Eternal Forward Motion (2019), Conquering (2021), and Fallen Star (2025). Known for their intense live performances and thought-provoking lyrics, Employed To Serve has been praised for crushing the modern metalcore scene while maintaining a DIY ethos.

Shadow Of The Dying Sun
My Dad My Dying Sun: A True Story of Love and Legends by David Sahadi, Lou Sahadi https://amzn.to/3xkKubA Lou Sahadi was born into a life of adversity, but he overcame it. For nearly three decades, Lou was a successful magazine publisher and also authored thirty-one acclaimed sports books, many of which became best sellers. From the 60s through the 90s he was the most prolific sports author of his time. Lou loved sports. Lou also absolutely adored his son. David Sahadi landed his first job at NBC Sports when he was just twenty-three. His love and passion for the sports industry combined with Lou's connections opened doors. With his guidance, David became an Emmy-Award winning television producer and director. He has been honored to receive 27 PROMAX Gold Medallion Awards. And though many believe the son became more famous than his father, there was never an ounce of envy. Lou was simply so proud and in awe of the son he loved and guided. At eight, David met Cassius Clay at the Fountainbleu Hotel. Lou was interviewing him. As David boarded a plane the following day, there he was. With immediate recognition, Clay vaulted him up onto his lap, telling the flight attendant, “He's sitting with me.” At thirteen, Lou ushered his scrawny kid David into the locker room at Shea Stadium. The New Orleans St. beat the Jets. Payton and Eli Manning's dad Archie who was the NFL's best quarterback at the time. Archie at over 220 lbs handed David his sweaty t-shirt from the game. It must have weighed ten lbs. David would wear that over-sized shirt for ten years. When Lou was sixty-eight, the tables turned. David was working for the WWE and Lou showed up at one of his son's shoots in South Beach. Lou met The Rock. The connection was instantaneous. David made Lou an extra in the commercial, with his new found friend, The Rock. Adversity found Lou on August 30th, 2020, after suffering a horrific fall. Cracking his skull and causing severe brain trauma, with the doctors saying he had only an 8 percent chance of survival. Miraculously, through boundless love and Lou's unrelenting determination to stay alive for his five children, Lou made a full recovery. Lou lived another two-and-a-half years before succumbing. David knew that Lou hung on because of his five children. David was with him that day. David kissed Lou's lifeless forehead after his last breath was released into the ethers, torrents of tears rolling down his swollen cheeks, and said, “I love you so much Poppa. And don't worry about your children. They are my children now, and I will take care of them.” This book is Lou's story. David's story. The emotional story of Love, Connection and the Blessed lives they lived together in the shadows of Legends.

After Matt's "paisley underground" band Rain Parade recorded two albums and an EP from '83-'85, he was a member of Crazy Horse (taking the Neil Young guitar role in Neil's absence), and released a few albums intermittently as he worked in law enforcement. Now that he has retired, he's back devoting all his time to music, and Rain Parade has been touring and released its first album of the millennium. We discuss the title track from this 2023 release, Last Rays of the Dying Sun, then the title track by the Hellenes' I Love You All the Animals (2018), and "Blue" from Rain Parade's Glass Palace EP (1984). Finally, we listen to "Reason for Living" from the self-titled album by Boatclub (2008). Intro: "What She's Done to Your Mind" (a 1982 single). More at rainparade.bandcamp.com. Seventh Episode! This time we welcome the incredible artist and game designer Alan Bahr, of Gallant Knight Games and many other things! Disclaimer here. Alan and I are good friends, we worked together as partners while I published my games under his company. I learned a lot from Alan, not only in terms of making games, but on how to be a good person this world. I owe a lot to him. Alan Bahr is probably best known for his work on the amazing line of games using the TinyD6 system. His award-winning and best-selling works include Tiny Dungeon, Tiny Supers (one of my favorite Supers RPG), Tiny Cthulhu, Tomb-Punk, Shadows of a Dying Sun, Crescendo of Violence, and so many more I could keep going for quite a few paragraph. If that was not impressive by itself, all this work that Alan does is singular and explores so many areas, genres, mechanics, and themes that makes you wonder how the heck does he come up with all of this! Well, I think we might have had a glimpse of the answer in this episode. In our chat, Alan shared how he has his curious mind and how he enjoys learning and discovery. I am always seen Alan exploring many different fields of interest such as philosophy, music, podcast, archeology, and the list could go on as well. And he talks a little bit how this passion made him build his own world in a way. During the episode we got weird and deep, talking about spirituality, religion, creativity, and the journey Alan has made from where he began and where he is now. And how it all turns out might surprise you, and might teach you something too. I really don't know what else to say besides, I love Alan. We had a great chat. It was very inspirational. And oh, yeah, we talked about game design and he made me think about stuff I never considered. Here's links to Alan's work! It's always a good feeling when artists you haven't heard from in a while come back with some of their strongest work. California's Rain Parade were one of the key bands of the Paisley Underground, the name given to indie bands like the Bangles and the Dream Syndicate who were focusing on melody and steeped in Big Star and the Byrds. Their '83 debut is still a masterwork of any genre. After switching to a major label, the usual challenges ensued and the band ceased, though the members all went on to other projects. This summer sees the release of the first Rain Parade album in 38 years, Last Rays of a Dying Sun, and it might be their strongest yet. Matt and Steven join us to discuss what motivated the new album, their collaboration process, the passing of Steven's brother and original member David Roback who went on to form Mazzy Star, and much more. It'll be hard to knock this album off my best of the year list. Enjoy! www.patreon.com/thehustlepod www.flatironrecordings.com

Interview by Kris PetersSunshine Coast based metal outfit Dying Sun are seasoned enough musicians to understand the notion that sometimes you don't have to go like a bull at a gate to make an impact.Often it is more beneficial to step back, take stock, and assess the landscape before rushing in.Comprised of current and former members of bands like Misery, Laceration Mantra and Motorized, the musical pedigree spread throughout the band members is the perfect platform from which to launch a sustained and, more importantly, successful career. After recently releasing their second album Black Coven, Dying Sun also took to the road for the first time as a band, playing with PistonFist and Lucifungus across three dates covering the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Despite the sudden rush of activity vocalist Matt D stresses Dying Sun are still very much a work in progress, especially for the near future as Misery hit the road for an anniversary tour.Matt sat down with HEAVY to tell us more, starting with the early reception for Black Coven."We've got lots of good feedback so far," he smiled. "It's pretty early days, but we're happy with the feedback. We got some really good feedback from a couple of peeps about the sound of the album."Of course, if people are saying good things about the album then it has a lot to do with the musical component on the finished product, with Matt delving a little deeper into what Dying Sun were actually going for sonically."We didn't have any big plans for it," he measured, "apart from we wanted it to be better than the first album, of course, which is probably what every band says (laughs). I just wanted it to sound a little more cohesive, particularly moving between the songs and the dynamic of the album. We feel like we've got a pretty good dynamic range happening there amongst the songs, with different topics and different sounds."In the full interview, Matt talks more about Black Coven, how it differs musically to their debut album DoomdayCometh, the fantastic artwork, what each band member brings to Dying Sun based on their experience in other bands, the staggered release schedule of Black Coven and why they chose to do it that way, finding the balance in music and more.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Employed To Serve over Zoom video! Employed To Serve have released their brand new record, Conquering, out via Spinefarm. Drawing influence from the music of their youth and a new perspective on how to nurture the positive aspects of humanity and individual growth, Conquering is a celebration and acknowledgement of triumph in the face of a world that can be relentlessly adversarial.Employed to Serve began recording Conquering in the "unforgiving winter" of 2020. It was produced and mixed by Lewis Johns at The Ranch, Southampton and mastered by Grant Berry at Fader Mastering. ETS took the time thrown at them by a world stopped still to write their most visceral material to date. ABOUT EMPLOYED TO SERVE: Employe to Serve's origins are essentially humble, with the core duo of Justine Jones (vocals) and Sammy Urwin (guitar/vocals) initially starting the band as a two-piece grindcore project backed by a drum machine. Early experiences on the UK festival scene expanded their horizons and perceptions of what weightier music could be. Seeing heavy-hitters such as Converge, Meshuggah, and Glassjaw alongside smaller but no less important acts like Rolo Tomassi, Veils, and The Chariot inspired the duo to develop their vision. 2014's Change Nothing Regret Everything EP operated as a stepping stone into full band territory, before 2015's critically acclaimed debut album, Greyer Than You Remember, became their calling card, followed up two years later by The Warmth of a Dying Sun, then their 2019 Spinefarm debut Eternal Forward Motion. Employed to Serve have already proved themselves as a searingly intense and honest live experience, sharing bills with the cream of the crop of modern heavy music, including Code Orange, Bury Tomorrow, Stick To Your Guns, Loathe, Counterparts, and Underoath. They've also decimated stages at some of the UK and Europe's leading music festivals, the likes of Download, Glastonbury, Graspop, and Hellfest. And the accolades are unstoppable; from their Kerrang! Album of the Year win back in 2017, achieving the assumed impossible with a KKKKKK (yes, that is 6 K's!) live review, landing in Metal Hamme''s reader and staff Top 10 Album polls, and a 2020 sold-out Underworld performance, to a plethora of cover features across Music Week, Metro Weekend, Upset, and Kerrang!, Employed to Serve are unflinching at the forefront of metal innovation. Here The Death Metal Guy and The Black Metal Guy get each other into two forgotten classics of "trenchcoat-era" Norwegian black metal, each with an outsize influence on contemporary sounds. Greetings Rainbow Warriors! I’m coming to you from Amritapuri Ashram in Kerala india today. I pray I can get enough connection to actually upload this show. I’ve been here near 3 weeks now and I have to say it’s been a very deep experience. Lots of personal growth happens in a deeply activated place like this. Phew! Keep an eye on my Visionary Lifestyle Guide instagram for the behind the scenes insights on my journey here. I’m thrilled to announce that just completed a course in Reiki so I’m now a certified practitioner and am really looking forward to sharing that with people who are in need of energy healing. In India I usually find myself being more of s student than a teacher. I sharpen my tools and add new ones to the kit, and it feels so so good. Our guest today is Nancy Ash. Reverend Dr Nancy Ash is a modern day mystic and pioneering midwife to the new paradigm since the 1970s. Her heart-centered voice is heard worldwide as a passionate new-thought-leader, healing conduit, author, poet, web TV host of Kaleidoscope, and former radio co-host championing peace for all women, men, and children on this planet. Ordained in ‘85, Rev Nancy is a senior minister at the vanguard of inter-spiritual dialogue. Professor Ash is president of the new-paradigm learning community, New Earth Theological University, and is a grad/postgrad advisor as dean of its school of inter- spiritual studies. She is also executive director of NewEarth University, the learning arm of a global movement, the NewEarth Project. As a teen, Nancy studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York while working in graphic design at CBS before receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland. During that phase she met and studied briefly with mythologist Joseph Campbell - inspiration for her life-work. Dr Ash holds a PhD in religious studies from Metropolitan University, and earned a Doctor of Divinity degree in metaphysics & spirituality. In tandem with 40 years as a Oneness Advocate in evolutionary consciousness, Nancy is honored to serve as a Founding Trustee for the unprecedented initiative: the “ITNJ” ... the International Tribunal for Natural Justice - a world court for the people and by the people. Reverend Dr Nancy Ash is the author of two books: Garland of Grace: Sitting with the Dying Sun; and, Doing a 360: Turning Your Life Around to Follow Soul’s Purpose. “ I was blessed to meet Nancy at The New Earth festival in Bali. Turns out she’s an old yogi so no wonder we hit it off famously. We had a great chat with a beautiful view, and she told me all about New Earth University. The university is divided into six schools that Nancy will outline in the interview. The NewEarth University is currently blossoming online with 5-10 year plans of expansion into physical structures and locations. After getting to know each other I was honored to be invited to join the faculty of the School of Health and Wellness , and contribute my work on Conscious Eating and more, to their massive database of open source content on line. Please make sure to check the show notes to get links to everything we discuss, and do make sure check out the New Earth University website. This is a new paradigm of education, sharing the information that our world truly needs now. I’m so grateful to learn that this is happening. It really gives me hope for the future! So now please enjoy the show, and namaste. Real talk: I'm ill. And because I'm ill, I've been a little slack in putting together some interviews. You'll probably be able to tell when you listen to the start of this episode.I've been listening to the new Employed to Serve album a lot lately. It's really very good. They're about to head out on tour with Milk Teeth and Wallflower and I thought hey, this would be a perfect time to do a quick flashback to when I interviewed Justine. The band have come on a lot since this interview was first broadcast, touring an absolute boatload, playing festivals and releasing the frankly wonderful album 'The Warmth of a Dying Sun'.I had a lot of fun doing this interview, and it's actually still pretty good. I hope you enjoy it.(Originally broadcast on January 22nd 2016)It can sometimes be stressful when trying to arrange interviews. Some people are funny about doing podcasts. Some people feel that doing a “wee” thing, like an interview for this podcast, isn't a particularly good use of their time. I think both of these things are fair enough. If you're going to get interviewed by The Guardian or Kerrang! Magazine then it makes way more sense to do that than it does to do this.Plus, it's not like I'll ever get Dave Grohl or something on here, is it?Obviously it's more irritating when someone just doesn't like doing podcast interviews, yet it just reminds me how lucky I've been to talk to some of the people I've spoken to; people who have reputations for being choosey about what they do have chosen to speak to me, and that's very cool.I suppose what I'm getting at is that I'm still super thankful for people taking time out of their day to have a chat with me. And even more thankful to you guys for sticking with me.BUT HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO THIS WEEK'S EPISODE?! Well, I had some issues trying to book guests this week and then two came along at once. Only, both came along at the end of the week. My original intention was to interview Justine, get home, edit it and upload it, then get it out into your ears by 11.59pm on Thursday. Sadly, that didn't happen. So, I'm sorry for being a little late. Nothing pains me more than being late. Seriously. What transpired though was a really good interview, and I think it's worth waiting a little longer for. Employed to Serve are a mathy hardcore band of the kind I find myself increasingly drawn to as I grow older, and it was awesome to speak to another woman for this podcast when I've been struggling to find people to come on.Highlights include:Wetherspoons and beerRider beers and general drinking on tourWhen Justine realised she was creativeAnd when she realised she wanted to be in a bandSome influences in ETS' soundDeftones and musical evolutionWhy math-type music is perhaps getting more popular than beforeSexism in the music industryOur favourite albums of last yearSometimes the best parts of the conversation happen after you switch off the microphone, and you'll just need to take my word for it when I say that we say we continued chatting after I stopped recording.ETS are a band that is only going to grow, in my opinion, and I'm glad I got a chance to speak to Justine before they get even bigger. They absolutely nailed it at the show later that night and I highly recommend getting along to see them if you can.Oh, and I'm sorry for the drunken story ramble at the end. I'm not perfect. Sometimes I'm prone to flights of fancy.I hope you enjoy the episode. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
