"Adolescence" is quite possibly the buzziest and best show of 2025. A cultural phenomenon all over the world, particularly within the UK (it was the first streaming show to place at the top of the Barb Audiences weekly television ratings), the series has received universal critical acclaim for its directing, writing, one-take cinematography, and performances. Director Philip Barantini was kind enough to spend some time speaking with Daniel Howat about his work on all four episodes of the series while star Erin Doherty spoke with Nadia Dalimonte about her haunting work in Episode 3, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the series, which is now available to stream in full on Netflix. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
For my second of three consecutive duo interviews, I chat with composers Aaron May and David Ridley. While they've been composing together for a while, their biggest project is also their most recent - the viral Netflix series Adolescence, from director Philip Barantini and starring Stephen Graham. It's not surprise, then, that we spend a lot of our chat talking about the series, including working in the single take, real time format, understanding that the series might not need score at all, and the genesis of the child vocalization that forms an integral part of their score's palette. Dave has also scored all of Phil's projects, with Aaron also scoring all but the first two, so we discuss this long term director combination as well as how the two work together (and work separately). This is one of the more tangential conversations I've had - Aaron and Dave warned me beforehand that it might happen, but I certainly instigated it! I should have known it was coming when we lost track of time before recording talking about East Anglia and the British ritual/folk year. Shame that wasn't recorded too... Aaron and Dave's score is available on all major platforms, as are their other scores and their debut solo albums (each released in 2023). Adolescence is currently on Netflix, and there are rumors that a second season may come (though this would at least be a surprise to me). You can find out more about Aaron and Dave on their joint website.
In this gripping episode, the hosts delve into Netflix's "Adolescence", a harrowing four-part British crime drama that has captivated audiences worldwide. The series centers on 13-year-old Jamie Miller, whose arrest for the brutal murder of his classmate, Katie Leonard, shatters his seemingly ordinary family. As the investigation unfolds, the narrative explores Jamie's descent into online radicalization, exposing the dangerous influence of incel culture and toxic masculinity on vulnerable youth. Through intense performances and a unique one-shot filming technique, Adolescence offers a chilling commentary on the perils of digital indoctrination and the societal factors that can lead to unimaginable acts. The hosts examine the series' unflinching portrayal of modern adolescence and the urgent conversations it sparks about online habits, parental awareness, and the fragility of young minds. Tune in and enjoy, Cheers!
This episode was originally recorded in 2021 with director Philip Barantini, currently best known as the director of “Adolescence” a four-part series on Netflix. This episode focuses on his independent feature film Boiling Point, also shot in one take. Hear how he kept the camera moving while also telling a rich story of an intense night in a restaurant.
On this episode of the podcast, host Dr Pasquale Iannone is joined by two students on the MSc Film Studies programme, Eve Kurt-Elli and Aaron Bowler, to discuss Adolescence (2025), one of the most talked-about and critically acclaimed TV shows of the year so far.A four-part Netflix Limited Series directed by Philip Barantini, Adolescence is co-written by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham and stars Graham, Owen Cooper, Erin Doherty, Christine Tremarco and Ashley Walters. The series tells a ripped-from-the-headlines story of a 13 year old boy accused of killing a female classmate. Each episode is shot in one continuous single take, a technique which, far from being a gimmick, has the powerful effect of tying the viewer to events as they unfold in real time.In our wide-ranging conversation, Pasquale, Eve and Aaron discuss the background to the series and unpack some of its themes. They discuss the power of the single take aesthetic and provide overviews of each of the four episodes.

Escuchar audio

We have just hit 100,000 downloads on The Burnt Chef Journal podcast, and perfect timing so, as we release our latest episode with Boiling Point Director and Producer, Philip Barantini! After 20 years of being in front of the camera, as well as working in hospitality, Philip Barantini transitioned into directing in the late 2010s - making his first short film with the award winning 'Seconds Out'. He then followed up working with the BIFA nominated short film 'Boiling Point', starring Stephen Graham, which was then adapted into the hotly anticipated, BBC1 drama series. Philip is a fantastic individual and incredible human being, who is refreshingly honest as he shares with us his own experiences of working in hospitality. We hope you enjoy this week's episode!
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by director, screenwriter and producer PHILIP BARANTINI!This episode has been hinted at for a minute now, and anyone who's picking up crumbs on the acting breadcrumb trail will already be aware that Stephen Grahame is essentially the spiritual godfather of this whole podcast. Well DPP fam, here's Philip - a frequent Stephen collaborator and fellow Liverpudlian, who has spent his fair share of time on both sides of the camera. What's so cool about this chat is that it only goes to further prove how much humanity and basic decency there is in film making. We sometimes see and hear examples to the contrary, of course, but this just makes those in the industry who are caring and feel no need to make these vulgar displays of ego shine brightest. Boiling Point is a 2021 British drama, directed by Philip Barantini it stars Stephen Graham as Andy, a head chef at an high profile restaurant in London. When we meet Andy he is not having a great day, his restaurant has been downgraded from five to three stars for hygiene, it has been overbooked for the evening and he is having problems in his personal life. Thrown into the mix is also a customer with a nut allergy, a racist diner and tensions in the kitchen all which create a pressure cooker environment. Shot in one take Boiling Point is a thrilling drama, Graham is excellent as the unfortunate Andy. Watching his situation deteriorate on what could end up being the worst night of his life is both stressful and compelling. Recommendability and engagement scores for Boiling Point were very high to give a very impressive overall rating of 4.01. In this programme we hear about the highs and lows of working in some of the world's best kitchens, and why it ultimately isn't right for everyone. Ruth Alexander speaks to three chefs who chose to leave the profession. Former head chef Philip Barantini in the UK is now a TV and film director, his film Boiling Point, released in 2021 is about a chef struggling to run a successful restaurant. Genevieve Yam left behind Michelin starred restaurants in New York to become a food writer, she's currently culinary editor at the website Serious Eats. Riley Redfern was a pastry chef in Michelin starred restaurants in San Francisco and New York, having lost her job in the pandemic, today she has a new career as a software developer. In this episode, Dario talks to director Philip Barantini about his tense, absorbing and thoroughly authentic slice of restaurant life: Boiling Point. Stephen Graham is superb as Andy, a chef on the edge breakdown with pressures coming from all angles and trying to keep his diverse team of staff working for him on a busy Christmas service. Adding to the anxiety, the restaurant is unexpectedly visited by a celebrity chef and Andy's former mentor Alastair (Jason Fleming), who brings with him notorious food critic Sara (Lourdes Faberes). Dario and Philip bond over their shared experiences of restaurant culture and this underpins conversation about the authenticity of the film, the use of the one-take set-up, the improvisational aspects of the script, Stephen Graham's role as a driving force on-set and on-screen, and the restaurant as a fascinating site for examinations of British social life. Neil and Dario also round up some recent watches including Neil's Covid induced revisit of Predator and Predator 2 & Paul Schrader's The Card Counter, while Dario discusses Tony Scott's Unstoppable and Crimson Tide, and Sergio Corbucci's Il Grande Silenzio. Before your phone rendered the entire idea of literature redundant as it continues to deepen its inexorable grip on your soul, you may well remember reading something called a book. They aren't novel to noted bibliophile Howie; well he can at least recall seeing a movie which had books in it as he picked the Top 5 Books in Movies for us to discuss, presumably in an ill-fated attempt to convince us he isn't the knuckle dragging simpleton we know he is. We watched BOILING POINT, the astonishing Netflix film from writer/director Philip Barantini. Things deteriorate over the course of one evening for Head Chef Andy; already metaphorically spinning plates before entering his restaurant, a snivelling little pencil pusher has downgraded his Health and Safety rating to three stars. With a dining room packed full of obnoxious racists and demanding Instagram influencers, an unexpected visit from partner/mentor/rival Alastair Skye and a famously caustic food critic comes at exactly the wrong moment. Front of house Beth's hopeless inexperience shows as she increases the pressure on a kitchen already burdened with language barriers, basic health violations, lazy kitchen porters, self-harming pastry chefs and, if you can believe it, much, much more. An utterly compelling technical achievement, the cast are all excellent with dazzling performances from Stephen Graham, Vinette Robinson, Ray Panthaki and Stephen McMillan in particular. Filmed in a single take which strengthens the general mood of anxiety that starts as soon as this film begins and continues to gather pace right towards the climax, this is highly recommended by all of the Dads. Andy Day is Cbeebies longest serving presenter, starting way back in 2007, so the chances are that if you have spawned a child since then you will have heard of him. Unlike two of our dads who profess to being oblivious of the multi-talented performer. Not to worry though, Andy superfan Dan is on hand to guide us as we discuss ANDY AND THE BAND, a two season CBBS series about a problem-solving kiddy rock band who help their fans. In the episode "Ruby the Superfan", Andy's sister Ruby wants to meet her hero, a vlogger named Fay Moss putting their latest gig at risk. With roadie Whiff dressed up like a one-man Whitesnake and only too happy to take their place, will the band appease Fay and her surly bodyguard Sebastian long enough for Ruby to meet her idol AND make the gig in time? Will there be a cleverly crafted message about being aware of what might be fake or true in the media which also subtly highlights the collective vapidity and lies of social media and plots about how you should avoid celebrity worship and learn your friends are your real heroes? Well, yes. now that you come to mention it. Good wholesome content. Although thinking about who the groupies are for this band is a troubling thought. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads
Thanks for tuning in to this weeks episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by film director Philip Barantini. After 20 years of performing in front of the camera - including roles in the massively successful Band of Brothers, Chernobyl, Ned Kelly and Humans, Philip Barantini transitioned into directing in the late 2010s, marking his first short film with the award-winning Seconds Out, written by and starring Robbie O'Neill. Following this, Barantini helmed the BIFA nominated short film Boiling Point, starring Stephen Graham, which was then adapted into the hotly anticipated one-shot feature of the same name in 2021; both movies were co-written with Barantini's frequent collaborator James Cummings. Boiling Point saw its international debut in competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and premiered in the UK at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2021. The film has garnered glowing reviews from both critics and audiences, who have called the film "dizzying" [The Guardian] and "utterly compelling" [Variety], commending the film for its "piano-wire tension" [Time Out] and performances - "Stephen Graham is phenomenally mesmerising" [HEYUGUYS]. It recently won 4 BIFA's including best supporting actress (Vinette Robinson), best cinematography, best casting and best sound. and was nominated in 11 categories. If you enjoy One For The Road, then click follow to be notified of the release of our next episode. If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice, and links for Philip.https://www.instagram.com/barantini/https://alcoholchange.org.uk/https://www.wearewithyou.org.uk/https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-Martinezhttps://www.grownuphustle.com/Instagram - @TheDaniellaMartinez@GrownupHustle See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Actress and Producer Hester Ruoff has been working in the entertainment business for over a decade. You might know her as Debbie the paramedic in the long-running British soap opera Eastenders before her producing career kicked off with short films in 2018. It was around the time she starred in gritty crime thriller Villain, the directorial debut of Philip Barantini which cemented their working relationship. Barantini was in the market for producing partners to turn his acclaimed short film Boiling Point into a feature and Hester knew she needed to be involved. Starring Stephen Graham as a head chef wrangling his team in the kitchen, behind the bar and on the floor on their busiest night of the year, the technical feat and performances of this single-take endeavour has been lauded by critics, at the British Independent Film Awards and by the restaurant industry for its honest portrayal of their profession. Here Hanna Flint talks to Hester about transitioning to producing and what it took to get her first feature Boiling Point off the ground. The adrenaline-inducing film Boiling Point is out in cinemas and online. Shot in a single take on a single night at a London restaurant, the movie has inspired Ellen and Mark to take a closer look at one-shot films and those that appear to be. What does the one-shot do for a movie? Is it any more than showing off? Boiling Point stars Stephen Graham as an under-pressure chef whose life is unravelling over a busy night in the restaurant. Ellen talks to director Philip Barantini, himself a former chef, about his decision to film the feature as a “oner” and the pressures that caused. On the front page of the script for 1917 Sam Mendes had written, "This is envisioned as a single shot,". Mark speaks to legendary cinematographer Roger Deakin about how he realised the director's vision for the First World War epic. And, fresh from her victory at the British Independent Film Awards, Boiling Point star Vinette Robinson shares what she's been watching in Viewing Notes. Screenshot is Radio 4's guide through the ever-expanding universe of the moving image. Every episode, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode journey through the main streets and back roads connecting film, television and streaming over the last hundred years.

Bienvenido a La Wikly. Hasta el lunes, This is a public episode. When History Hack was young, Alex, Alina and Woody had a crazy idea to try and speak to 'a couple' of the cast of Band of Brother, then 20 years on from filming. It, frankly, got a bit out of hand and a wild series of recordings followed that originally aired in 4 parts. To celebrate 20 years since the final episode of Band of Brothers airing, we have recorded a new introduction with Woody and Alex to remember the crazy days in Lockdown 1 and have cut the four parts into one. We have tried to even out the audio as much as possible but it is very much a drunken zoom chat with a bunch of beloved actors. We hope you do enjoy this special episode. Be warned. Actors like to swear. A lot. Especially when it comes to bootcamp. With thanks to: Nick Aaron, Philip Barantini, George Calil, Ben Caplan, Michael Cudlitz, Dexter Fletcher, Rick Gomez, Scott Grimes, Nolan Hemmings, Robin Laing, Mark Lawrence, Matthew Leitch, Ross McCall, James Madio, Tim Matthews, Rene Moreno, Jason O'Mara, Peter O'Meara, Bart Ruspoli, Matt Settle, Richard Speight Jr, Rick Warden and Peter Youngblood-Hills. (TSAP S03E16) Sam caught up with composing duo Aaron May and David Ridley, where they chat about how they met, their musical origins, their recent work on VILLIAN and so much more! "Aaron May and David Ridley are award-winning composers who collaborate on music for film. As a duo, they create bold, unique music, with a contemporary-classical and electronic edge. They throw together their contrasting skill sets to develop rich soundscapes and evocative melodies. Their collaborative approach brings an openness to the process of writing for film, and a distinct sound-world for each new project. After scoring several short films, they will make their feature-length debut in 2020 with the score for Villain, a film by Philip Barantini. With a background in contemporary classical and electroacoustic music, Aaron enjoys working with both music and sound design, and his compositions often blur the lines between the two mediums. He has composed music and sound for broadcasters including CBBC and BBC Radio 4, and has created multi-channel works for installations in spaces including The V&A, The Science Museum and The Museum of London. He was awarded Best Sound Design: Television Series (Music + Sound Awards 2016) for his work on Messy Goes to Okido (CBBC). As a multi-instrumentalist, David specialises in piano, violin, viola, and voice and has been involved with orchestras throughout his life. He has scored over twenty plays and directed music for theatres including the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2014, he was awarded the MTN Award for Innovation for his experimental electronic score for Lorraine & Alan, which he developed with his theatre company, Bucket Club. Aaron and David met at The University of Bristol, where they were faculty of arts composition scholars." Big thanks to Caullum Tennick for editing. Want to sponsor an episode?
