Peter Shankman is a serial entrepreneur, author, speaker, podcaster, and thought leader in marketing and public relations. Ever wanted to be quoted in a major news outlet as an authority or an expert in your space? Now, you can get valuable PR placements for free. In this conversation, we talked about Peter's free new online service, Source of Sources. Launched earlier this summer, SOS is already making waves in the world of public relations with over 22,000 subscribers. Much like its better-known earlier incarnation, HARO – which stands for Help a Reporter Out – Source of Sources is an email listserv designed to make it easier for journalists to find the sources they need, and for sources, such as brands, business owners, and thought leaders to get the publicity they seek. Up to three times a day, subscribers get an email with queries by journalists from various media outlets.  If a journalist asks about a topic you know a lot about, simply reply directly with helpful information or feedback for a chance to be featured or quoted in the story. The only rule? Only reply to a journalist's query, or SOS, if you have something productive and relevant to add. If you respond with something unhelpful, you will be permanently removed from the list! No exceptions; no appeals. This is serious business. He's not messing around here! Peter Shankman is perhaps best known as the founder of HARO (Help a Reporter Out), an online service that worked the same ways as Source of Sources. Groundbreaking at the time and user-friendly, HARO bridged the gap between journalists and public brands seeking media coverage by allowing journalists to connect with industry experts and the public for feedback on issues related to their reporting. In 2010, HARO was sold to Vocus, which was subsequently acquired by Cision in 2014. Earlier this year,  Cision folded the classic HARO into Connectively, a web-based tool. Shortly after, our guest, Peter Shankman revived HARO as Source of Sources, an incredible resource he provides to subscribers free of charge.  A lifelong Manhattanite, marketing expert, and futurist, the New York Times called Peter Shankman “a rock star who knows everything about social media and then some.” He is a 5X best-selling author, and the author of Faster Than Normal: Turbocharge Your Focus, Productivity, and Success with the Secrets of the ADHD Brain. He also has a fantastic podcast about ADHD called The Faster than Normal podcast where he interviews psychologists and successful people from all fields who have ADHD. I highly recommend the book and the podcast is one of my favorites!  In this episode, Peter Shankman and I spoke about Source of Sources, the current state of PR and news media in general, and how to become savvier consumers of information. We also discussed Mental Capital Consulting, a consultancy he co-founded with a psychologist in 2023 that helps companies attract, hire, and retain neurodiverse employees while helping companies to become neuro-inclusive. And, to top it all off we resolved a mysterious bone of contention about cold pizza.  Peter assured us his new service, Source of Sources is free, but he says if you really feel like sending him a donation, you should send it to a charity such as Best Friends Animal Society or The NYC Mayor's Alliance for Animals.  Watch on YouTube:  Follow Peter on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/petershankman/  Learn more about Source of Sources: https://sourceofsources.com/ Mental Capital Consulting: https://mentalcapitalconsulting.com/ Coaching and Mastermind: https://www.shankminds.com/  Instagram: @petershankman https://www.instagram.com/petershankman/ Over 79K followers Faster than Normal Podcast: https://www.fasterthannormal.com/  Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Shankman

Ready for a HARO (Help a Reporter Out) masterclass? HARO is a platform that connects journalists with 'experts' to include their insights into articles. This is great for link building but can lead to a lot of questions on how to do it right. Thankfully, Chris Panteli joins the Niche Pursuits podcast this week to shed light on: How and when you should respond to HARO queries, What you should say, How to vet reporters, How to follow-up, And a whole lot more... All to save you time, increase your success rate and land more links. Chris runs a purely white-hat, digital PR link building agency that averages 100 links per month. And he has a ton of awesome insights to share. He starts off by explaining some context. How valuable HARO links are for building credibility, increasing domain authority, and improving search rankings. And how to succeed with HARO, it's important to position yourself as an expert in your niche and have a well-optimized LinkedIn profile and website homepage. Success rates vary depending on the niche and competition, but having expertise and credentials increases the chances of winning pitches. He suggests starting by targeting websites your competitors have featured on their homepages and then expanding to high DR (domain rating) and high-traffic publications. Chris also believes vetting HARO queries is crucial to save time and increase success rates. The key is to look for relevant queries from reputable domains and avoid low-quality websites. Engage with journalists and editors to ensure your link is included in the final article. And don't be afraid to follow up to convert unlinked mentions into links. Timing is also important in HARO link building. And while subject lines are not a major factor, it's important to follow any specific instructions from the journalist. He even gives an awesome tip on how to use AI to assist with research and generating pitches in a way that'll work like a charm. It's really a great and valuable discussion you don't want to miss. And Chris also offers a free vetting resource (in the shownotes below) and a 20% discount for Niche Pursuits listeners on link building services and a HARO masterclass course with the code NichePursuits20. With three startup launches and exits under his belt, Peter is recognized worldwide for radically new ways of thinking about the customer experience, social media, PR, marketing, and advertising. He is also a sought-after expert and commentator on ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and the new Neurodiverse Economy.  An ADHD entrepreneur himself (like me!), he is the host of a popular ADHD podcast called “Faster than Normal.” Peter Shankman is currently Futurist in Residence at BluShark Digital, a marketing agency, where he tracks trends in the constantly changing digital landscape in order to devise cutting-edge solutions that help clients gain maximum visibility.  Peter Shankman is a fascinating guy, known not only for his out-of-the-box thinking but also for his incredible, unconventional habits and hobbies. If he's not getting up at 3:30 am for a run followed by a cold shower or jumping out of an airplane, he's often traveling the word and consulting. He also has a Mastermind. It was a lot of fun talking to Peter and you can learn more about him by checking out the links in the show notes. He's a global traveler and digital nomad that has been to 83 countries and counting. Kimanzi also reveals how you can ruin your credibility by taking shortcuts and playing into the fake media influence games. A company's success nowadays is so reliant upon pitching and getting media coverage. Having a credible source say positive things about you and your company can be pivotal when it comes to whether your brand is going to be seen or not. That is exactly why this episode of The Brainy Business is dedicated to giving you some concise tips on how to use behavioral economics to pitch your brand. I know pitching yourself can feel awkward, but when you understand the brain science it doesn't have to be, especially if you follow my tips! I discuss different brain biases such as social proof, authority bias, familiarity bias, and really focus on availability bias. Availability bias is critical to pitching success. You can take advantage of it by predicting and paying attention to trends and finding a way to offer people a fresh perspective on them. We close with three key points to keep in mind when pitching: (1) keep it short (2) be happy with your language and (3) follow directions. This and so much more in this episode, which will help you use behavioral economics to successfully pitch yourself and your business, so listen now... Show Notes: [00:06] In today's episode, I talk about using brain science to successfully pitch to media. [02:22] Pitching yourself can be awkward and uncomfortable, and there are brain biases that can explain why that is. Understanding them can help you turn them around and use them to your advantage. [05:05] There is good news – pitching doesn't have to be so hard if you use my tips! [07:20] I explain why media coverage and pitching are so important, beginning with social proof. [08:43] Authority bias leads us to believing that anything that the news or media reports is true or else it wouldn't be featured. [09:32] Familiarity bias makes us lean toward things that we already know or know of. [10:26] The final (and I would argue, most important) brain bias that is to your benefit when pitching is availability bias. [12:48] One of my favorite examples of availability bias is how travel to Norway drastically increased following the release of Disney's movie Frozen! [14:20] In order to take advantage of availability bias, you need to predict trends and offer something unique in relation to them. [16:30] Pitching to reporters can be stressful, but remember that reporters are people doing a job. You can be a resource to them they are thankful for if you connect with them properly. [19:06] A simple and easy habit you can create to make you a master at pitching by taking advantage of availability bias. [21:55] Recognize where you fit and where you can fill in gaps. [24:23] Remember to take advantage of familiarity bias! Get people to know who you are and like you before you ask for anything [25:41] I recommend signing up for HARO (Help a Reporter Out). [27:10] It's important to remember that not all of your pitches will land, but that only makes it that much more rewarding when they do. [27:43] I give you some key tips to keep in mind: (1) keep your pitch short and sweet, (2) be sure that you're satisfied with how your pitch is worded, and (3) follow directions that reporters put into their requests and do what they ask. [29:30] A quick and simple summary of all the tips in the episode. [31:03] Registration is now open for my Setting Brainy Goals course! Thanks for listening. Building several successful enterprises while living with undiagnosed ADHD is a tough endeavor, but it can also be an interesting take on life. In this first episode of Before IT Happened, our host Donna Loughlin talks to marketing expert, entrepreneur, and best-selling author Peter Shankman.  Peter was a founding editor of AOL News before we'd ever heard of online journalism. He leaned into the early dot-com boom by launching Geek Factory, one of the first PR firms designed to put a spotlight on the tech visionaries of the era. He later created HARO, a database used to connect journalists and sources around the world. He sold both Geek Factory and HARO, but he didn't stop there. His ADHD diagnosis has led him to a bigger understanding of life reflected in his best-selling book “Faster Than Normal” and his more recent undertaking helping companies understand neurodiversity. Listen now to hear Peter's unique journey from academic cautionary tale to a multimedia juggernaut by turning his ADHD brain into a superpower. Before any world-changing innovation there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life. Jump straight into: (03:10) - Peter's artistic upbringing with undiagnosed ADHD and how journalism at Boston University saved him - “To go from being on academic probation for two and a half straight years to receiving BU's Alumni Award was a nice moment.” (07:48) - Building a newsroom for AOL in the early internet days - “AOL was the internet, no question about it. I was so early in the game, I actually had peter@aol.com, which was amazing.” (11:10) - Starting Geek Factory - “I called my mom and I said, ‘I'm going to go out on my own, I'm going to try to start a PR firm and when it fails, I'll get a job.'” (13:14) - The story behind Peter's journalism mailing list HARO (Help a Reporter Out) - “Originally it was a Facebook group, and that led to the formation of HARO. It blew up beyond my wildest dreams. I got very very lucky.” (15:29) - Getting acquired by Vocus and Peter's first hours as a multimillionaire - “It probably took about five months from initial contact to acquisition. If we didn't have lawyers, it would have taken a week.” (17:23) - The secret to becoming hyper-focused - “I rock at what I'm good at and I let other people do what I suck at because they just do it so much better than I ever could.” (20:13) - Peter's ADHD diagnosis and how it helped him get a new understanding of life - “I'm very happy. I'm very fortunate. I think that all the mistakes and all the screw-ups, everything I've done has led me to this point.” (26:09) - Using skydiving as a drug - “It is the ultimate reboot. I can't get back on the plane, I can't stop and redo it. I will either make the decision to live or I'll make the decision to die. Life doesn't get simpler than those 45 to 60 seconds of free fall.” (28:33) - All things Shankman: How Peter manages a whole ecosystem of projects - “All I'm really doing is I'm telling stories about things I love and I am so ridiculously blessed that I get paid to tell stories about things I love.” (31:13) - Helping companies be neurodiverse friendly  - “The goal is to understand what the neuro-diverse person needs and to teach companies how to be more understanding.” (33:19) - Faster Than Normal, Peter's future projects and the best advice he ever received - “Basically everything I have and all the success I've had has come from the fact that I listen.” Episode Resources Connect with Peter at https://www.shankman.com/ (Shankman.com) Read Peter Shankman's book https://www.amazon.com/Faster-Than-Normal-audiobook/dp/B07648CSNN (Faster Than Normal) Listen to Peter Shankman's...

Today we're replaying one of our recent favorite episodes featuring Andrew Zimmern and Peter Shankman. From eating bugs to breaking bread across cultures, our first guest today knows a lot about food. You likely know Andrew Zimmern from his long resume of cable TV shows including Bizarre Foods. Lately Andrew is using his platform to talk about the inequities in our food supply chain. Andrew says there’s an ugly truth that we don’t see in our food delivery system from the fields to the table. Andrew also mentioned the hidden agenda of all his shows and where Jeffrey can find the allusive “Black Lobster” that may not be black at all.     Old friend Peter Shankman joins Jeffrey for the second part of the show. Peter is the Futurist-in-Residence at Epic Marketing Consultants Corporation, he’s best known for creating HARO (Help a Reporter Out) a platform to help journalists find expert sources for their stories. Which we find out he sold 10 years ago this month. In this frenetic conversation, Peter and Jeffrey talk candidly about neurodiversity and the gifts of truly thinking different. The men cover marketing, how companies are responding to COVID-19 and BLM, if privacy is a myth in the digital age and even get into dad jokes. Pep Talks for Side Hustlers

Build a website in just 5 days (even if you're not techie) at www.free5daywebsitechallenge.com Already have a website? Take the Free "Jumpstart Your Website Traffic" marketing mini-course at www.jumpstartyourwebsitetraffic.com Leave a Review! So a few weeks ago, a package arrived at my house that looked like a book and I’m like “What is this? What did I buy that I forgot about?” and open it up, and it’s a paperback book that says “Advance Uncorrected Proof NOT FOR SALE” on the cover with a letter from New York Times Bestselling Author of The $100 Startup and Side Hustle Chris Guillebeau inviting me to read his latest book, The Money Tree all about a new pathway to self reliance and financial freedom. So my first thought was “I cannot wait to read this book because Chris’s books are life-changing.” My second thought was, “I’m gonna do whatever I can to help him promote this book because of everything he’s done for me.” Here’s the backstory: A few years ago I’d signed up for a service called HARO (Help a Reporter Out) and every day I’d get an email with queries from websites, blogs, news outlets, publications, etc. wanting to hear from experts on certain topics.  I’d scan the queries every day, and many times I’d find myself spending way too much time writing in-depth responses to these queries which would result in either nothing or a one-sentence mention and a link back to my website, which is fine for SEO, but what I was after was email list subscribers.  So just as I start to think that these HARO opportunities aren’t worth all the effort I’m putting into them, I see one asking about side hustles: successes, challenges, financials, all the things.  And I’m like, “Well shoot, my story fits perfectly with what they are asking for, I’ll go ahead and do this. Nothing is probably going to come of it anyway, but I’ll give it my best shot.” Come to find out, it’s for a new podcast by author Chris Guillebeau all about side hustles, and my story was going to be featured in Episode 30 all about how an “Ohio IT director earned more than $31,000 empowering others by providing them with the tools and resources they needed to set up their own websites.” That episode came out, and then I saw a surge in people signing up for my free DIY web design training and telling me on their intake form that they found me through Chris’s Side Hustle School Podcast - which if you’ve never listened to it, definitely go check it out the stories are FASCINATING. It’s https://sidehustleschool.com/ and I’ve linked it up in the shownotes. So I’m just like, blown away and so grateful for that opportunity, and it was an early clue that relationships with other people who serve a similar audience can be massively valuable in growing your own. And then, someone on Chris’s team reached out to me and said “Hey, we liked your story so much, we’d like to tell it in Chris’s upcoming book “Side Hustle” can we ask you some more questions about your story?” So of course I said yes, and then several months later, a copy arrived in my mailbox and I saw my name in print on page 72 of Side Hustle all about how I figured out who was the ideal customer for my free DIY Wordpress training.  I was blown away. And then I started hearing from people that they found me through Chris Guillebeau’s “Side Hustle” book. It was a pivotal moment for me. Not only because of all the new people who found me because of Chris - that’s amazing, and those people like Sal and Crystal and so many more have become some of my best customers, ambassadors and most active community members - but also because that’s when I discovered that there’s value beyond just what I teach. There’s value in my story of how I got here and what I had to overcome along the way. That experience was the catalyst for me starting this podcast, and sharing my story with you guys and sharing my income reports and taking you behind the scenes to inspire and motivate you to keep going, and that alone has opened up so many opportunities for me that I never could have imagined. And so when Chris’s latest book, The Money Tree, arrived in my inbox, it was the perfect excuse to reach out to him and invite him on the show and do whatever I can to get his latest book in the hands of as many people as possible. So, I don’t usually get nervous before interviewing guests on this show, but before this interview my hands were sweating, I was like, “This is Chris Guillebeau. He’s a big freaking deal. Marie Forleo gave acknowledgements for this book. I have to nail this interview.” And so right before we’re about to chat, I’m flipping through The Money Tree again to, I don’t know, pull out some quote that makes me sound like Oprah, and I see a quote that I highlighted the first time I read it that said “YOU CAN DO MORE THAN YOU THINK.” And in that moment I gave myself a little pep talk and I was like, “You got this Shannon. You don’t have to be anyone but yourself in this interview, and you can do more than you think.” So with that, I am, so, so excited to bring you today’s guest, Chris Guillebeau, New York Times bestselling author, host of the daily podcast that’s downloaded over two million times a month, Side Hustle School and now author of the must-read story about finding fortune in your own back yard, The Money Tree. Chris and I talk about: Chris’s journey from an entrepreneur to author. The #1 key to financial freedom. Chris’s advice for someone just out of college who wants to become an entrepreneur. The “third way” of entrepreneurship that’s low risk and high reward. This inspiration behind Chris’s new book, The Money Tree. Why making mistakes is critical to the entrepreneurial journey. Chris’s best advice for you if you’re struggling to grow your side hustle. The one belief Chris had to change about himself to get where he is today. My favorite quotes from Chris: “I began to understand how powerful entrepreneurship can be as a force for good and for creating positive change.” “I think there's so many possibilities these days... why would you do something that you're not excited about?” "’There is another way.’ That's my favorite phrase in the world.” Resources mentioned in this episode: moneytreebook.com https://chrisguillebeau.com/ Bio: Chris Guillebeau is the New York Times bestselling author of The $100 Startup, Side Hustle, The Happiness of Pursuit, and other books. Today we talk about some of the skill sets and tips on how you can become an effective freelance writer!   Podcast Outline:   0:00 - Opening thoughts 0:47 - Introduction to Jessica Lawlor 1:54 - Opportunities available for people who want to be freelance writers in 2020   3:06 - Two different ways to look at freelance writing: 1) Journalistic freelance writing 2) Content marketing   3:44 - How there were more narrow opportunities for writers in the past, but the sky's the limit now: More common to see qualified, skilled seasoned writers choosing the freelance route: Creating their own schedules Having more flexibility to write about what they want Creating a different kind of life doing the writing that they really love vs. what they were doing before   5:25 - Requirements to be a writer: Find something that you're passionate about. Start with your own stories first.   9:48 - Strategies on how to enter the freelance writing space and find success:   1. Start with your own stories first. Blog Articles on LinkedIn Instagram   2. Develop a portfolio of your work.   3. Showcase your portfolio: Have your own site. Develop your personal brand and blog. Use free portfolio sites.   4. Two ways to take your writing to another site: Start with an idea for an article and write a pitch to an editor. Pitch a dream publication or outlet directly. (Understand the style and the type of pieces they're looking for, and tailor your pitch specifically to the publication or outlet.)   14:55 - How blogging and showcasing your work can attract freelance writing gigs 17:10 - How business owners need writers to help with their content   18:05 - How to set your pitch apart: Do your homework. In your email, address the editor by name. Lay out your pitch in just a couple of sentences, not just a headline. What are you going to be talking about in the article? What is the reader going to learn? Why are you pitching this idea to the site you're pitching it to? Mention who you might interview or speak with. Keep it short and simple (no more than a paragraph or two). Wait and see. Follow up after a week. After that, let the idea go and take it to another publication.   21:16 - How to get on the editor's good side once you land the pitch: Ask the editor if they have submission guidelines or a style guide. Read other articles on the site to emulate the style.   23:16 - Advice for those just starting their freelance writing business: Get involved in writers communities and social media.   25:47 - Encouragement that one-off projects can turn into long-term contracts 27:49 - How to learn more about Jessica's work 29:00 - Final thoughts   Resources and tools discussed in this episode:   Learn more about Jessica Lawlor:  Jessica Lawlor & Company: https://jessicalawlor.com/ Jessica's log: https://jessicalawlor.com/blog/  Jessica on Twitter (@jesslaw): https://twitter.com/jesslaw?lang=en  Jessica on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jessicallawlor/?hl=en    The Write Life: https://thewritelife.com/  Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/thewritelifesite    Muck Rack: https://muckrack.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/?hl=en  HARO (Help a Reporter Out): https://www.helpareporter.com/  Huffington Post: https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/  Where to Pitch: https://wheretopitch.com/  Sonia Weiser on Twitter (@weischoice): https://twitter.com/weischoice?lang=en
