Everyone knows the tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman — but the real history behind Washington Irving's classic is darker and stranger than the fiction. The Hudson River Valley's lawless past, real Hessian soldiers, and a real man named Ichabod Crane all played a part in creating one of America's most enduring ghost stories.*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*IN THIS EPISODE: The true story behind “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” - plus I'll narrate the entire story as Washington Irving wrote it back in 1820! *** Students move into a relative's home near where they'll be training on the job – and not even the owner of the home knew what frights were happening in her upstairs rooms. (Two Months of Terror) *** A ghostly sentinel, a dark witch's revenge, a haunted church, and other unexplained happenings – they all seem to take place in and around a certain cemetery in Salem, Ohio. (Haunted Salem Cemetery) *** It is said that some hundred years ago, people in Jamaica believed the powers of so-called “Shadow Killers”. But who were they? (Shadow Killers of Jamaica) *** Police had stopped the investigation of Nicole van den Hurk's murder, so her stepbrother falsely confessed in order to get her body reexamined for DNA testing. (False Confession) *** Although most scientists say that traveling in time “still” is not possible, a Washington lawyer says he has done it dozens of times as part of a secret project during the Cold War. (Proof of Time Travel) *** Is it possible that the origin of Dracula, the Devil, and even the evil bloodsucking Baobhan Sith all have their origins from one source? In a world beset by climatic emergencies, the continuing resonance of the flood story is perhaps easy to understand. Whether in the tortured alpha male intensity of Russell Crowe's Noah, in Darren Aronofsky's eponymous 2014 film, or other recent derivations, the biblical narrative has become a lightning rod for gathering environmental anxieties. However, Philip C. Almond's masterful exploration of Western cultural history uncovers a far more complex Noah than is commonly recognised: not just the father of humanity but also the first shipbuilder, navigator, zookeeper, farmer, grape grower, and wine maker. Noah's pivotal significance is revealed as much in his forgotten secular as in his religious receptions, and their major impact on such disciplines as geology, geography, biology, and zoology. While Noah's many interpretations over two millennia might seem to offer a common message of hope, the author's sober conclusion to Noah and the Flood in Western Thought (Cambridge UP, 2025) is that deliverance now lies not in divine but rather in human hands. Philip C. Almond is Emeritus Professor in the History of Religious Thought at The University of Queensland. A noted authority in the history of religion and of ideas, he has written many books on subjects as diverse as God, the Devil, the afterlife, witchcraft and witches, Adam and Eve, heaven and hell in Enlightenment England, and early modern demonic possession. What did slavery actually look like in the everyday lives of Jews in the medieval Middle East? In this episode, Rabbi Marc Katz sits down with historian Craig Perry to discuss his groundbreaking book Slavery and the Jews of Medieval Egypt: A History (Princeton UP, 2026). Drawing on the extraordinary archive of the Cairo Geniza, Perry reconstructs a hidden world of enslaved people, merchants, and households in medieval Egypt. These fragments—letters, contracts, and legal questions preserved for centuries in a synagogue—reveal how slavery shaped Jewish and Islamic society at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean worlds. From global slave trading networks that stretched from Europe and Africa to India, to the intimate spaces of kitchens and courtyards, Perry uncovers how enslaved people lived, labored, resisted, and sometimes entered Jewish communities after gaining their freedom. The story even reframes familiar rituals: medieval Jewish children could look around the Passover table and see slavery embodied in the people serving the meal. Together, Perry and Katz explore how this overlooked history forces us to rethink medieval Jewish life, the social realities behind religious texts, and the complex entanglements of Jews with the broader Arab-Islamic world. About the Guest Craig Perry is Associate Professor in the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies at Emory University. A specialist in the social and economic history of the medieval Middle East, his research focuses on slavery, law, and everyday life in Jewish and Islamic societies. He also is the editor of The Cambridge World History of Slavery: Volume 2, AD 500 – AD 1420. About the Host Marc Katz is the Senior Rabbi of Temple Ner Tamid and the author of several books on Jewish thought and the Talmud, including Yochanan's Gamble: Judaism's Pragmatic Approach to Life. Through his writing, teaching, and podcast conversations with scholars and public thinkers, Katz brings cutting-edge scholarship into dialogue with contemporary Jewish life. A strange brew that's hard to resist, even for a modern day microbe. In the war on devilish microbes, our weapons are starting to fail us. Greg Jenner is joined by historian Dr David Veevers and comedian and quizzer Paul Sinha to learn all about the global history of spices and the spice trade. Nowadays, we take spices for granted, and our kitchen cabinets are full of ginger and cinnamon, cumin and coriander, pepper and nutmeg. But despite their contemporary status as a staple of diets around the world, the majority of spices are native only to Asia (barring notable exceptions like chilli peppers). In this episode, we tell the story of how spices went global, from the very earliest days of the spice trade within Asia, through the empires of Alexander the Great and Rome as spices made their way into Europe, and into the colonial period, as the Dutch and British East India Companies vied to monopolise this lucrative trade. Along the way, we focus on five of the most commonly traded spices – pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and chilli – asking how their use changed across time, and as they were traded from place to place. From pharaohs possibly being embalmed with cinnamon, to medieval kings demanding rent in peppercorns, and nutmeg as a cure for plague, we look at the varied uses to which people all over the world have put these precious and expensive commodities. If you're a fan of food fads of the past, histories of globalisation and cultural exchange, and surprising ancient beliefs, you'll love our episode on the History of Spices. If you want to learn more about the history of commodities, listen to our episodes on the history of chocolate or coffee. The Kristian Harloff Show is packed today with one of the biggest stories in entertainment as we break down the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer after it set a massive 24-hour launch record. According to Sony's reported numbers cited by ComicBookMovie, the trailer reached 718.6 million views in its first 24 hours, surpassing the previous benchmark and instantly making this one of the hottest movie conversations online right now. We dive into what made the trailer hit so hard, why fans are reacting so strongly, and what this could mean for the future of Spider-Man on the big screen. We're also talking about Ryan Gosling finally addressing the long-running Ghost Rider rumors while promoting Project Hail Mary. Gosling reportedly said that "some discussions have been had" while also calling the situation "complicated," which is more fuel for Marvel fans who have been speculating about his possible MCU future for months. If you've been following Ghost Rider chatter, Avengers rumors, or Marvel casting talk, this is a big one to unpack. On top of that, Drew Goddard has revealed why Sony's planned Sinister Six movie never made it to theaters. Per the report, Goddard said the project effectively fell apart in the aftermath of the Sony hack, giving fans a fresh look at one of the most fascinating "what if" superhero movies that never happened. We discuss what that movie could have been, how it might have reshaped Spider-Man's cinematic history, and why fans are still talking about Sinister Six all these years later. We also cover the latest Buffy news after Sarah Michelle Gellar urged fans not to read the leaked New Sunnydale script. Gellar said pilots are unfinished learning tools and pushed back on people judging the project based on material that was never meant to be seen in that form. We break down the cancellation chatter, the leak conversation, and what this means for Buffy fans still hoping for the franchise to return in a major way. If you're into Spider-Man, Marvel, Ghost Rider, Ryan Gosling, Project Hail Mary, Sinister Six, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the biggest movie and TV stories of the day, this episode of The Kristian Harloff Show is for you. Join Kristian as he breaks down the headlines, gives his honest reactions, and dives into what matters most for movie fans. John's monologue is about Trump taking fees from immigrants and US sponsors for services that it has no plans to provide. The government took their money, and now it won't even adjudicate their applications—in many cases, it refuses even to issue denials. The State Department is actually telling consular officers not to notify future applicants that the government has banned them. He also talks about Trump telling reporters he “isn't sending troops anywhere” in Iran, adding that even if he was, he wouldn't tell the press – whom he hates. Even as Trump denies it, national defense insiders in DC report DoD is close to deploying thousands and thousands of troops to the region to take and hold Iranian territory near the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon has also asked Congress for $200Billion in supplemental war funds so it can keep escalating conflict with Iran. John then interviews Hans Charles & Menelek Lumumba who are the hosts & co-creators of podcast The A Building, which was launched by Imagine Entertainment and iHeartPodcasts back in February. It is a tale of protest that will hopefully spark the fight in all of us for the next No Kings protests on March 28th. The A Building tells the story of the 1969 student protest at Morehouse College in Atlanta where students (including Samuel L. Jackson) took board of trustee members (including Martin Luther King Sr.) hostage. The event was a pivotal moment in the modern era of student protests, and the podcast explores how the climate of the 60's and 70's reverberates today.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Asha and Renato explain why agencies must follow administrative legal procedures and how RFK Jr.'s disregard for science and scientific expertise rankled the judge. Plus, they review the latest ruling from Judge James E. Boasberg, who rebuked the U.S. Attorney's office in D.C., led by former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, in its investigation into Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Renato and Asha examine how Pirro failed to meet the super low threshold of obtaining a subpoena and why the judge found the probe improperly motivated. Today, macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food, a staple of weeknight dinners, family gatherings, and Soul Food restaurants. Humble though the dish may seem, its history is filled with surprising twists and turns. Renaissance cardinals and popes dined on elaborate pasta-and-cheese concoctions laced with costly spices. In the eighteenth century, wealthy young Englishmen made macaroni a symbol of continental sophistication. Black women, whose contribution has long been overshadowed, played a crucial role in establishing the dish as an American tradition from the nation's founding through the Civil Rights Movement. The Epic History of Macaroni and Cheese: From Ancient Rome to Modern America (Columbia UP, 2026) by Dr. Karima Moyer-Nocchi is a delectable history of macaroni and cheese, tracing an extraordinary journey of cultural exchange and social change. Karima Moyer-Nocchi reveals the religious, political, and industrial forces that shaped its evolution alongside stories of the unsung figures who crafted the dish as we know it today: enslaved cooks who preserved and adapted traditions, immigrant chefs who introduced new variations, and practical homemakers looking to nourish their families with an affordable meal. She emphasizes the adaptability of macaroni and cheese, which in different times has served as both an indulgence on the elite table and sustenance to those struggling to survive, crossing borders, social classes, and cultural divides. Deeply researched and rich with enticing details, this book uncovers the creativity and resilience that brought a beloved food to our tables. The Epic History of Macaroni and Cheese also shares centuries of recipes—from ancient Roman authors to celebrity chefs, reworked for modern kitchens—that provide a hands-on way to experience the evolution of this iconic dish. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. “Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube" – ‘Let others wage war; thou, happy Austria, marry' is one of the few terms that almost anyone with a cursory interest in European history knows, only rivalled by the Voltaire quote thou shall not utter in my presence ever. It evokes the image of a handsome alpine boy full of charm and apple strudel wooing some princess into peacefully handing over the richest lands is Europe. And this narrative of peaceful transition to a benign dynasty is another one of the great propaganda successes of the house of Habsburg. The saying was attributed to Matthias Corvinus, the king of Hungary who had once occupied Vienna, then to the humanist Ulrich von Hutten, but first evidence of its use dates back to 1654, more than 150 years after the famous marriages that made an empire. From 1680 it was read out at Habsburg weddings to emphasise the peaceful nature of its rulers. It definitely did not originate in the days of Maximilian I when all these dynastic alliances were formed and bore fruit. Talking about gentle and peaceful transition was preposterous against the backdrop of a 15 -year long war over the succession to the grand Dukes of Burgundy, and the roller coaster ride that is today's topic, the way the Habsburgs acquired the crown of Spain. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFor do it yourself merchandise go to: Merchandise • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. So far I have:The OttoniansSalian Emperors and Investiture ControversyFredrick Barbarossa and Early HohenstaufenFrederick II Stupor MundiSaxony and Eastward ExpansionThe Hanseatic LeagueThe Teutonic KnightsThe Holy Roman Empire 1250-1356The Reformation before the ReformationThe Empire in the 15th centuryThe Fall and Rise of the Habsburgs
