Fears of the undead rising from their graves to cause trouble have recurred in societies around the globe throughout the centuries. But why was your mother-in-law especially likely to become a vampire? What makes Count Dracula a highly unusual bloodsucker? And how would you best mutilate a vampire's corpse to neutralise their threat? Speaking to Ellie Cawthorne, Professor John Blair shares stories of vampire 'epidemics' throughout history from his new book Killing the Dead. The Seattle Seahawks latest clash with the Los Angeles Rams left fans reeling after a brutal four-interception performance. What separates good QBs from great ones, and why some fans are losing patience while others still see hope for a turnaround. Expectations, turnovers, and the pressure of big moments all come under the microscope. So what exactly is Darnold's record in "big games" and how does it compare with "big moments"? Is there a difference? We also highlight some big time stats that Jaxon Smith-Njigba is putting up on the offensive side and how Devon Witherspoon has been locking down the perimeter on defense.  Looking ahead, the focus shifts to the upcoming matchup against the Titans and what the Seahawks need to do to get back on track. In the second half of the show we discuss some remaining notes from the game. We close the show with calls to Do Better with regard to quarterback rankings and a ridiculous law in London. Better at Life honors go out to a pair of Seahawks players for their postgame commentary on the podium following the loss to the Rams. Prof. Silverman describes the first Thanksgiving: an accidental feast between frenemies that was never repeated.  How much is our Thanksgiving tradition based on real events that transpired sometime in the fall of 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts? And why does it matter anyway?Don't all nations have feel-good traditions that are partly based on facts, but mostly predicated on myths?  Professor David Silverman answers these questions and more. For example, he shares with us that Europeans had been in contact with the Wampanoag Native Americans, who are the "Indians" of our Thanksgiving tradition, since at least 1524. And that the Pilgrims were guided to Plymouth by at least one crew member who touted its advantage - hint: all its native inhabitants had died of disease, leaving houses and fields empty and available for the would-be English settlers. And while the turkey was certainly on the menu, so was eel!   In this episode, Professor Silvermans explains the aftermath of that first Thanksgiving. And by way of follow-up, I ask him to explain why it is that some Native Americans observe a Day of Mourning on Thanksgiving.  Professor Silverman is the author of This Land is Their Land: The Wampanoag Indians, Plymouth Colony, and the Troubled History of Thanksgiving, a 2019 book. Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”The root of the cultural chaos we are experiencing is a surrender of the Truth of things!  Today Jack takes you inside a viral confrontation over women's locker rooms, presses into why definitions matter for safety and law, and asks a harder question most debates skip: are we created with purpose and order, or are we accidents of history free to redefine reality on the fly? From that starting point, everything else follows—coherent policy, compassionate boundaries, and a moral ecology that protects the vulnerable. We share the exchange of a Lesbian Black women with a liberal state senator as a case study in clashing worldviews: identity claims versus biological reality, the language of “inclusion” versus the lived experience of women who need privacy and protection. Then we widen the frame to children, adoption, and natural law. If public institutions treat bodies as arbitrary and family as interchangeable, who absorbs the cost? We wrestle with that question honestly and keep kids at the center. We also examine the Church's Shepherds, who are responsible for proclaiming the Truth...who instead struggle to speak with clarity, highlighting moments of institutional confusion and the courage of leaders like Bishop Strickland who ask for fidelity to doctrine. Rather than despair, we pivot to formation: how small, faithful communities and daily habits can renew minds and rebuild culture from the parish outward. Scripture's promise—“you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”—is presented as a roadmap to real freedom, not license, and to love that is ordered, fruitful, and humane. If you're tired of “my truth” vs “your truth,” this conversation offers first principles, practical steps, and a battle plan for living the truth with charity. Methylene blue is one of the most misunderstood compounds in biohacking, yet it can upgrade your energy, mood, memory, and cellular resilience when you use it the right way. We are back again with another solo masterclass, and this one breaks down how to use methylene blue as a precision tool for brain optimization, longevity, and human performance while avoiding the dosing mistakes that create jitteriness, sleep disruption, or dangerous interactions. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey guides you through more than a century of research on methylene blue. He has been hacking this compound since the early 2000s and brings deep insight into mitochondria, neuroplasticity, metabolism, supplements, fasting, red light, ketosis, nootropics, and functional medicine. You will learn how methylene blue works inside the cell, how it improves electron transport, and why it appears in neurology, psychiatry, and anti aging research at the same time. This episode shows you how to test your own dose, how to stack it with light and ketosis for maximum effect, and how to avoid serotonin syndrome or sleep disruption. Methylene blue also touches nearly every major system that biohackers care about, which is why this solo masterclass shows you how it interacts with mitochondria, neuroplasticity, metabolism, sleep optimization, and long term anti aging pathways. You will hear how it influences redox balance, ATP production, brain optimization, and stress resilience, and how it behaves when combined with ketosis, fasting, creatine, NAD boosters, red light therapy, or other nootropics. Host Dave Asprey explains why methylene blue pairs well with certain supplements but clashes with psychedelics or SSRI medications, how it fits into functional medicine protocols for mitochondrial repair, and how to use data and wearable tracking to dial in your response. This episode gives you a complete framework to evaluate whether methylene blue belongs in your personal longevity strategy and how to use it with precision instead of guesswork. You'll Learn: • Why methylene blue acts like mitochondrial jumper cables and when it improves energy and mood • The exact signs that your dose is too strong, too weak, or in the Goldilocks zone • How methylene blue interacts with neuroplasticity, memory circuits, and cognitive resilience • Why psychedelics, SSRIs, and MAO inhibitors can create dangerous serotonin interactions • How to pair methylene blue with red light therapy, ketosis, creatine, fasting, or NAD boosters • The link between mitochondrial health, fertility, libido, and long term anti aging strategies • How to track sleep optimization, HRV, and performance signals to dial in your personal protocol • The difference between aquarium grade dye and pharmaceutical grade formulations • Why genetic testing for G6PD deficiency is essential before higher dose experimentation Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. With over 1,000 interviews and 1 million monthly listeners, The Human Upgrade brings you the knowledge to take control of your biology, extend your longevity, and optimize every system in your body and mind. Each episode delivers cutting-edge insights in health, performance, neuroscience, supplements, nutrition, biohacking, emotional intelligence, and conscious living. New episodes are released every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday (BONUS). Dave asks the questions no one else will and gives you real tools to become stronger, smarter, and more resilient. In 1954 a doomsday alien cult headed up by Chicagoland housewife Dorothy Martin was waiting for the cataclysmic flood that would herald the arrival of spaceships to transport her and her followers to safety. When the hour came and went and nothing happened, she and her followers made up a Bible's worth of excuses, saying that the group's penitence and piety had saved them, and so the failure of the prophecy was actually a validation of their new religion. And even though its central claim had been refuted, they accelerated their efforts to proselytize and convert new followers.  This is the story of the 1956 classic study, When Prophecy Fails, by Leon Festinger, Henry Riecken, and Stanley Schachter. Problem is—this didn't really happen. At least not that way. As our guest this week Thomas Kelly points out from his investigation of newly unsealed archival materials, the psychologists not only embedded themselves in Martin's cult in a way that provoked their most irrational statements, they fudged the outcome of Martin story to suit their virally popular new theory of cognitive dissonance.  Show Notes Debunking “When Prophecy Fails” - Kelly - 2026 - Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences Failed Prophecies Are Fatal | International Journal for the Study of New Religions Learn more about your ad choices. Before there was English, or Latin, or Czech, or Hindi, there was a language that they all have in common, which we call Proto-Indo-European. Linguists have long been fascinated by the quest to get a glimpse into what Proto-Indo-European must have looked like through careful comparisons between languages we do have records for, and this very old topic is still undergoing new discoveries. In this episode, your host Gretchen McCulloch gets enthusiastic about the process of figuring out Proto-Indo-European with Dr. Danny Bate, public linguist, host of the podcast A Language I Love Is..., and author of the book Why Q Needs U. We talk about why figuring out the word order of a 5000-year-old language is harder than figuring out the sounds, and a great pop linguistics/history book we've both been reading that combines recent advances in linguistic, archaeological, and genetic evidence to reexamine where these ancient Proto-Indo-European folks lived: Proto by Laura Spinney. We also talk about Danny's own recent book on the history of the alphabet, featuring fun facts about C, double letters, and izzard! We sit down with the legend, the scholar, and the cultural architect — Dr. Todd Boyd, professor at USC (University of Southern California) also known as “The Notorious Ph.D.” One of the most respected voices in sports, film, hip-hop, race, and American culture, Dr. Boyd brings a raw, intelligent, and unfiltered conversation that every fan of the culture needs to hear.Born and raised in Detroit, Dr. Boyd reflects on how growing up in one of the most influential Black cities in America shaped his worldview. From the sound of Motown to the grit of the streets to the pride of a city that produces icons, Detroit built his mindset — and ultimately molded the cultural force he would become. He opens up about his decision to attend The University of Iowa, revealing the unexpected reasons that pulled him away from home and the experiences that helped sharpen his voice as a thinker, writer, and observer of society. Before the world knew him as a cultural critic, Dr. Boyd's first love wasn't film or academia — it was the sweet science. He breaks down how watching the artistry of boxing, especially the greatness of Muhammad Ali, shaped his sense of identity, resistance, performance, and Black excellence. Ali wasn't just a fighter — he was the blueprint that inspired Boyd's lifelong commitment to telling the truth through culture. From there, he talks about how Dr. J (the other Dr. J — Julius Erving) inspired him to take his education further, ultimately pushing him toward earning his PhD. That moment of seeing Dr. J float through the air made him realize what was possible for a Black man with vision, talent, and discipline.Throughout the episode, Dr. Boyd walks us through an extraordinary career that's woven into the fabric of Black culture. From shaping conversations on ESPN and CNN… to writing some of the most important cultural analysis of the last few decades… to leaving an imprint on Black cinema. And yes — we go deep on “The Wood,” one of the beloved films he helped bring to life, and how its authenticity, humor, and heart reflected the real Black experience. This episode is a blueprint for creators, storytellers, athletes, and anyone who cares about the culture. It's academic, it's real, it's inspirational — and it's filled with gems only Dr. Todd Boyd can deliver.Turn this one all the way up — it's a masterclass. More of Dr. Todd Boyd:Instagram  ⁨@notoriousphd⁩  Twitter/X: @DrToddBoyd  Latest Book: https://www.amazon.com/Books-Todd-Boyd/s?rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_27%3ATodd%2BBoyd

The Good Forest: The Salzburgers, Success, and the Plan for Georgia (U Georgia Press, 2024) explores some of Georgia's earliest settlers, the Salzburgers.  Georgia, the last of Britain's American mainland colonies, began with high aspirations to create a morally sound society based on small family farms with no enslaved workers. But those goals were not realized, and Georgia became a slave plantation society, following the Carolina model. This trajectory of failure is well known. But looking at the Salzburgers, who emigrated from Europe as part of the original plan, provides a very different story.  The Good Forest reveals the experiences of the Salzburger migrants who came to Georgia with the support of British and German philanthropy, where they achieved self-sufficiency in the Ebenezer settlement while following the Trustees' plans. Because their settlement comprised a significant portion of Georgia's early population, their experiences provide a corrective to our understanding of early Georgia and help reveal the possibilities in Atlantic colonization as they built a cohesive community.  The relative success of the Ebenezer settlement, furthermore, challenges the inherent environmental, cultural, and economic determinism that has dominated Georgia history. That well-worn narrative often implies (or even explicitly states) that only a slave-based plantation economy—as implemented after the Trustee era—could succeed. With this history, Auman illuminates the interwoven themes of Atlantic migrations, colonization, charity, and transatlantic religious networks. Guest: Dr. Karen Auman is an assistant professor of history at Brigham Young University and a certified genealogist. She studies Germans during the colonial period in the Atlantic World, religion on the frontiers of America, migrations, and families.
