Dr. Laura welcomes Saijal Patel, Founder and CEO of Saij Wealth Consulting, to a conversation about finance and financial literacy, especially in regards to women. Saijal promotes empowering women's financial independence and security. She has over two decades of experience in the financial industry in both North America and Asia to draw upon. Saijal's drive comes from seeing the unique challenges women face in managing personal finances and understanding how money works. Saijal and Dr. Laura address the stigma that surrounds talking about money and the belief that money causes problems. Saijal firmly believes it's the values people hold that manifest through money and that money itself is neither good nor bad. She notes that financial education and wellness address voter literacy through empowerment and understanding of governments' financial decisions, and also tackle one of the greatest sources of stress for people. Saijal and Dr. Laura examine what Saijal's course offers, the lack of good money mentorship growing up, and how to view and visualize abundance in our lives.“I have found with women that I'm educating, that for some reason society has told them and they have bought into this belief that ‘I need to be confident. I need to have confidence before I jump in and learn these things'. And that's the difference [that] is stopping so many women from building the skills because it's not confidence that they need. They need competence. Right? Competence actually leads to confidence.” Saijal PatelAbout Saijal Patel:Saijal Patel is the Founder and CEO of Saij Wealth Consulting, a financial consultancy and education platform dedicated to empowering women's financial independence and security. With over two decades of experience in the financial industry across North America and Asia, she holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and has served in roles as a financial strategist and analyst.Saijal is the renowned creator and host of Strictly Money, Canada's sole national personal finance program. Today's guests, Dr. Ellen Prager and Dave Jones have found engaging, relevant, and understandable methods to bring the science of ocean, atmosphere, and climate issues to the so-called, ‘non-choir.' Presenting the information in such innovative and entertaining ways keeps them committed to finding new approaches to reach their target audience. This is crucial since climate change is a critical topic for everyone, not solely those interested in science.  Ellen and Dave have an extensive network within the broadcast meteorology community and work to bring them together with leading climate scientists through extreme weather, climate change, and community resilience summits. They believe broadcast meteorologists offer an especially effective way to reach people with scientific information about more than just weather, such as climate change. Additionally, they have written a book for Columbia University Press to engage the public and help combat misinformation about the ocean, marine life, weather, hurricanes, climate change, and more. Their thesis focuses on the frequently asked and sometimes oddball questions they and their colleagues receive, using easy-to-understand answers and some humor to make it more interesting. The title is tentatively ”Megalodons, Mermaids, and Climate Change: You've Got Questions, We've Got Answers. Ask Away!!!,” which is slated to come out in Fall 2024.  Ellen and Dave hope to complete a series of public-oriented events associated with the book and restart the summits (the last one was right before COVID) in the next year or two, especially as the impacts of climate change are expected to get more extreme in the future. Climate change doesn't cause hurricanes, wildfires, heat waves, or flooding, but it makes them more extreme with costly and, in some cases, tragic consequences.    About Ellen Prager, PhD Ellen Prager, PhD, is a marine scientist and author, widely recognized for her expertise and ability to make science entertaining and understandable for people of all ages. She currently works as a freelance writer, consultant, Chief Scientist for StormCenter Communications, and Science/Program Advisor to Celebrity Cruises in the Galapagos Islands. She was previously the Chief Scientist for the Aquarius Reef Base program in Key Largo, FL, which includes the world's only undersea research station, and at one time, was the Assistant Dean at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Dr. Prager has built a national reputation as a scientist and spokesperson for the earth and ocean sciences and is a sought-after speaker for public-oriented events. She has appeared on “The Today Show” and “NBC News”, “Good Morning America”, CNN, “Fox News”, “CBS Early Show”, The Weather Channel, shows for the Discovery Channel, and was a consultant for the Disney movie “Moana.”   Ellen focuses much of her time on bringing earth and ocean science to the public through writing, working with the media, creating innovative partnerships, and speaking events. Her recent publication “Dangerous Earth: What We Wish We Knew About Volcanoes, Hurricanes, Climate Change, Earthquakes and More” takes an engaging look at what scientists wish they knew about some of the planet's most powerful forces. Her latest novel for young readers, “Escape Greenland”, released in April 2021, combines fast-paced adventure, humor, and relatable characters with fun learning about climate change, science, and nature. It is the second book in a series entitled “The Wonder List Adventures” published by Tumblehome Learning. The first book, “Escape Galapagos,” released in 2019, received rave reviews from readers. The first book in her previous middle-grade series, “The Shark Whisperer”, has been called, ‘an underwater Harry Potter.' Her previous popular science book, “Sex, Drugs, and Sea Slime: The Oceans' Oddest Creatures and Why They Matter”, took an entertaining look at marine biodiversity, its relevance to the average person, and why ocean life and resources are now at risk. Ocean advocate Carl Safina says of the book, “A great book for beginners and even experts can learn from and enjoy—this is possibly the best general book ever written on creatures of the deep.”  It has also been called, “hilarious,” “tastefully salacious,” and “fascinating.” She has written articles for scientific journals, public-oriented magazines, and several other books including “Chasing Science at Sea: Racing Hurricanes, Stalking Sharks, and Living Undersea with Ocean Experts” and “The Oceans.” Ellen has also published a series of children's books with the National Geographic Society. The first, “SAND” received the 2000 Parents Choice Award, and was followed by “Volcano” and “Earthquakes.”    Ellen has participated in research expeditions to places such as the Galapagos Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and the deep waters of the Florida Reef tract. She obtained a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University, a master's degree from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, and in 1992, a doctorate from Louisiana State University.    In 1992, as a faculty scientist at the Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole, MA, Ellen taught oceanography to undergraduates, teachers, and senior citizens in a unique educational program in which classroom learning is supplemented by extensive hands-on experience at sea aboard tall sailing ships.  She later became the resident director of the National Undersea Research Center in the Bahamas. In 1997, she joined the U.S. Geological Survey where she split her time between scientific research in marine geology, oceanography, and coral reefs and public education. During 1998, the International Year of the Ocean (YOTO), Ellen co-chaired the subcommittee on research, exploration, and education for the National Ocean Conference presided by the President and Vice President of the United States.  Ellen was a member and then Chairman of the Ocean Research and Resources Advisory Panel for the federal government and was hired by the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy to help write their report to Congress and the President. She continues to focus her efforts on developing innovative and entertaining ways to share her passion for the oceans and the environment with others.  About Dave Jones Dave Jones is a 35-year veteran of the weather industry and worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.  He also served as an on-air meteorologist for nearly a decade in the 1990s at NBC4 WRC-TV, the NBC-owned and operated TV station in Washington, DC. Additionally, he appeared multiple times on NBC's “Today Show”, NBC Europe, and CNBC Asia. While working for NBC, Dave developed the FIRST television weather website in the nation in 1995, launching a new era in communicating NASA data to the public. The website, “WeatherNet4” positioned NBC4 in Washington, DC, and NBC across the nation as a broadcast leader and early innovator of internet technology.    For several decades, Dave was a co-organizer and host of an annual weather and climate summit to bring together leading scientists and broadcast meteorologists. The summit quickly became a favorite event for broadcast meteorologists at both the national and regional levels. It reached millions of households through related live productions and, later, via social media.    In 2001, Dave founded StormCenter Communications, Inc. Under the Federal Government's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, he and his team developed a unique technology known as GeoCollaborate. This groundbreaking technology allows the sharing of trusted data across any web mapping platform in real-time, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making across various sectors, agencies, and organizations.   GeoCollaborate is being adopted by US Federal Agencies, States, and private sector organizations facilitating more effective decision-making in markets such as military, intelligence, civil agencies, climate resilience planning, energy and transportation, food, agriculture, healthcare, cyber, and homeland security. Due to StormCenter's SBIR success, the company was honored as a Tibbitts Award Winner by the Small Business Administration for exceptional performance under the SBIR program.   Dave, a former president of the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP Federation), continues to co-chair the ESIP Disaster Lifecycle Cluster. He has recently played a crucial role in advancing Operational Readiness Levels (ORLs) for trusted data to inform decision processes. In 2006, Dave received the ‘Charles S. Falkenberg Award', an esteemed ESIP-AGU recognition given to an early to mid-career scientist who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities, and planet stewardship through the utilization of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet. Dave was also honored as ESIP's Partner of the Year for 2020.

He serves on the FCC’s Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee and on the Texas DOT’s Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Task Force. Brent has a BA in economics from Wheaton College and a law degree from the George Mason University School of Law, where he was articles editor for the Civil Rights Law Journal. He was a legal clerk at the FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and at the Energy and Commerce Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. Before joining Mercatus, he was the Director of Research at the Information Economy Project, a law and economics university research center. Resources   Mercatus Center   The Erosion of Publisher Liability in American Law by Brent Skorup and Jennifer Huddleston (Mercatus Center, 2019)   News Roundup   Zuckerberg, Facebook under mounting pressure over political ads   Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to meet with civil rights leaders this week after his company has maintained its policy to leave up political ads containing false statements by politicians. The company has applied the policy unevenly, first allowing Donald Trump to maliciously post an ad with false information about Joe Biden; then leaving up an Elizabeth Warren ad containing false information designed to illustrate the absurdity of Facebook’s ad policy.  During a hearing, Zuckerberg also admitted to Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that if she were to place a false political ad, that the company would probably leave it up.    But Facebook is inexplicably removing false ads placed by Political  Action Committees. One notable example is an ad placed the Really Online Lefty League – ROLL – a Political Action Committee co-founded by Adriel Hampton – which falsely claimed that Lindsey Graham supports the New Green Deal. Hampton, an experienced marketing and political strategist, responded by filing to run for governor of California. Then gubernatorial candidate Hampton posted a false political ad and Facebook took it down, saying his campaign wasn’t legit—that it was just a ploy to place a false ad to see what Facebook would do. Even though Hampton says he fully expects to win the governorship, Facebook hasn’t reinstated the ad.   It’s a mess.   Top officials from the NAACP, National Urban League, and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights are scheduled to meet with Zuckerberg this week to express their concerns with Facebook’s political ad policy, which the company now says has been extended to the UK.   Facebook sued for age, gender bias in financial services ads   A plaintiff in San Francisco filed a potential class action federal lawsuit last week claiming that Facebook discriminates against users based on age and gender in determining who can see financial services ads.  The lawsuit comes 7-months after Facebook agreed to tailor its platform to avoid discrimination on the basis of age, gender and zip code for job, credit, and housing ads.   US launches Tik Tok investigation   The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has launched a national security investigation into Tik Tok, which is owned by the Chinese firm Bytedance. A bipartisan cohort of lawmakers including Democrat Chuck Schumer, Republican Marco Rubio, and Tennessee Democratic Congressman Bart Gordon have all expressed concern about how the Chinese government uses TikTok’s data. TikTok’s growth has been outpacing the growth of incumbent social media companies in the U.S.     Snowden: Facebook as untrustworthy as the NSA   Whistleblower Edward Snowden, who is exiled in Russia for blowing the lid off the National Security Agency’s mass data collection practices six years ago, told ReCode’s Kara Swisher last week that Facebook is as untrustworthy as the NSA when it comes to privacy. But he didn’t limit his remarks to Facebook. He said that all tech companies are looking to exploit our personal data no matter the consequences. He also said that, on the surface, users may appear not to be concerned about how big tech companies handle their data but that, in reality, users are very concerned but feel powerless.   Five people shot and killed at Airbnb rental   Five people were shot and killed at an Airbnb rental Northern California during a Halloween party on Thursday. The rental listing on Airbnb prohibited parties and the renter claimed it was renting the space for family members who were suffering from smoke inhalation from the fires in the Los Angeles area. A witness reported to Buzzfeed that the shooting occurred with apparently no provocation. Airbnb has banned the renter from the platform.   China launches 5G network   Chinese officials announced last week that it would roll out 5G to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou 2 months ahead of schedule. The country also announced plans to roll out 5G to over 50 cities by the end of this year. While U.S. telecom companies have begun their 5G roll-out, it’s largely been rolled out on higher frequency bands than the 5G service that’s being rolled out in China. The lower frequency bands that China’s using cover a larger surface area, while the higher frequency bands U.S. companies are using are more powerful but cover less ground.   Corey Booker introduces bill to ban facial recognition in public housing   Senator Corey Booker has introduced a bill to ban facial recognition in public housing. The Senator cites the disproportionate impact that facial recognition technology threatens to have on the nation’s most vulnerable communities. The No Biometric Barriers to Housing Act targets public housing that receives funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.   Apple pledges $2.5 billion for California affordable housing   Apple announced that it will invest $2.5 billion to address California’s affordable housing shortage. Some of those funds will be applied statewide. Others will be allocated for projects in the Bay Area. Three hundred million dollars will go towards affordable housing on Apple-owned property.   Following Katie Hill’s resignation, Democrats push for revenge porn law   Thirty-five democrats in Congress sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee to pass a federal revenge porn law that would criminalize the nonconsensual posting of sexually explicit images online. The letter followed Congresswoman Katie Hill’s resignation from Congress after someone posted nude images depicting her and others as well as accusations that she was having inappropriate relations with campaign and congressional staffers. Hill blames her husband, whom she is in the process of divorcing, for posting the photos.     MIT president acknowledges discrimination against minorities and women on campus   Finally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology president Rafael Reif acknowledged last week that women and people of color often face exclusion and belittlement on campus and that it’s something the university is trying to improve. The development follows revelations of Jeffrey Epstein’s ties to the university.

Matt has appeared as an expert guest on CNBC Asia and Sky Business, and contributed to the Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian Financial Review. Matt’s ideal investment is a small, fast-growing business, that is capital-light, with demand- and supply-side competitive advantages, high returns on incremental invested capital, little analyst coverage, deeply aligned management (typically founders), and that are top-dogs or first-movers in an emerging and important industry. Last but by no means least, the company must be trading at a discount to Matt’s estimate of intrinsic value. -- A reminder that the comments on the podcast, particularly those related to individual stocks are not financial advice and is general information only. So far the month of February is just 4 trading days old, and already the U.S. dollar index is down just over 3 percent We closed January at 99.6 and we closed at 96.5 Gold, going the other way, now up about $13 today, closing above $1,155; the price of gold is up almost 3.5% in the first 4 days of February That shows you that most of the move in gold is the result of the dollar going down This move is just getting started The markets are just beginning to price in the fact that the Fed is not going to raise rates in March They are pricing 3, rather than 4 rate hikes this year, and that's the only thing that is not driving the markets A more realistic look what the Fed is likely to do is to not raise rates, but cut them below zero Despite that we're seing all this momentum in the dollar and in gold Gold stocks are just soaring, many of these names have been up 5-10% each day in February None of this is attracting the attention of Wall Street A guest on CNBC today alluded to short covering as the reason for gold going up He commented on how lousy the fundamentals are for these stocks The fundamentals have never been lousy They have appeared lousy because there was so much belief that the dollar would continue to rise because the U.S. is having a genuine recovery and the Fed will continue to raise rates The media and Wall Street are still very biased; I was on CNBC Asia last night debating an American guest who touted the strength of the economy based on the strong jobs market, how household balance sheets are better than ever and real incomes are rising The only reason homeowners have better balance sheets is because they no longer have a house; home ownership is at a 50 year low While gas prices are lower, rents, healthcare and most other costs are going up It was an example of how the public ignores all the bad economic news and assumes that the economy is great Another writer for CNBC.com attributes gold's rise to low inflation He actually said that my explanation about the economy slowing with inflation did not make sense, because in his mind, high inflation is a result of a strong economy This is exactly backwards. Strong, productive economies keep prices low Weak economies that lack production end up having higher prices, and those weak economies produce budget deficits and the central banks have to print money, causing inflation The actual definition of inflation is an expansion of the money supply; higher prices are a result of the fact that the currency then buys less The government wants people to be confused about inflation and where it comes from because they are the source of the problem By blurring the meaning of inflation, it is easier to shift the blame for economic problems on everything else but monetary policy CNBC highlighted my call on gold, but omitted all the correct calls I have made, especially 3 recent market predictions: One: if the Fed raises rates, the stock market is going to tank Why did I say that the market was going to tank? The conventional wisdom that if the Fed is raising rates, the economy must be stronger - I said if the Fed raises rates it will be doing it into a weak economy. In fact, it probably happened in a recession Two: I said that there is no historical precedence for this monetary policy because we have been at zero interest rates for 7 years, so the effect of higher rates on the economy appears to have more effect because they have been talking about tightening for years I also said that if the Fed raised rates, gold prices would rise; it was unanimous that gold would collapse.  Gold is up more than $100 since the initial knee-jerk sellof Remember that I recorded a video blog where I specifically said, if the Fed raises rates, and there's a knee-jerk reaction sending gold lower, that will be a great buying opportunity and that was the exact low My third prediction is that the dollar would go down,

March 27, 2015 Santiago, Chile Yesterday morning, CNBC Asia's anchorman Martin Soong cradled a young, hairy-nosed wombat named Billi on live television. He then transitioned to interview an entrepreneur who is raising money to colonize Mars. Now, as much as I'm sure we're all fans of wombats... and as much as it might be a great idea to colonize Mars, it's time to be soberingly honest: these are classic indicators that we've reached the top of the market. Money is no longer serious business. It's all fun and games chasing the latest investment fad with no regard whatsoever to the risks involved. In fact, the very idea of 'risk vs. reward' is completely broken. Now it's all risk, very little reward. As my partner in Asia Tim Staermose told me yesterday, "Sensibly investing long-term savings and pension money for acceptable risk-adjusted returns could not be further from everybody's minds." Of course, this is what happens when interest rates are effectively zero... or even negative as they are in certain cases in Europe. We've talked about this before— Europe has such dangerous financial incentives now that in certain cases there are SAVERS who are paying the bank to deposit their money, and BORROWERS who are being paid by the bank to go into debt. It's completely upside down. But to say this is unprecedented is actually incorrect. In fact, it was only a few years ago that borrowers in the United States had HUGE incentives to go into debt. After 9/11, the US Federal Reserve pushed interest rates down to nearly zero. Mortgage rates dropped, and suddenly it became incredibly cheap to buy a home. Demand picked up... gradually, then suddenly. Demand for housing (and hence mortgages) became so great, in fact, that banks began to doggedly compete with one another. The conservative practices of the past were abandoned. Instead of demanding a 20% down payment from the borrower and financing 80% of the purchase price, some banks started offering 90% loans. Then 95%. Then 100%. At the height of the bubble, we were seeing people with no job, no income, and no assets to post as collateral receiving 103% loans. In other words, people were essentially being paid to borrow money. Markets tend to have very short memories. But I think we can all recall that this experiment in no-money-down, teaser-rate lending did not end well at all. Curiously, what we're seeing now is even worse. Now interest rates literally are negative. Most notably, you have to pay money for the privilege of loaning your savings to bankrupt governments. It's easy to look back on the housing crisis with 20/20 hindsight and say, "That was dumb..." Yeah. It was. But this is even dumber... and very few people in finance seem to care. The most dangerous words in finance are, "This time is different." That seems to be what people honestly believe... that THIS time paying people to borrow money in an even more destructive way will have zero consequences. I invite you to explore this topic with me further in today's podcast— you can listen in here:
