This is the slightly edited version of our December 5th livestream with film director, producer, screenwriter, rapper, and communist Boots Riley. He is the lead vocalist of the musical groups The Coup and Street Sweeper Social Club. He wrote and directed the film Sorry to Bother You and is the creator and director of the television series I'm A Virgo. We talked to Boots Riley about the recent labor upsurge, including the wave of strikes and increasing militancy among workers in the US. We briefly discuss United Auto Workers' call for a ceasefire in the war on Gaza and establishment of a Divestment and Just Transition working group. We also discuss navigating the capitalist film and television industry as a communist and possibilities for organizing among creatives. Boots also answers some questions about making anticapitalist art including some behind the scenes insights from I'm A Virgo. We want to shout-out Boots Riley for joining us for this discussion and definitely recommend I'm A Virgo if people haven't watched it yet. I also want to say there's some really special content we released in the month of December on our YouTube channel. Including our conversation with Steven Salaita and our conversation on Kuwasi Balagoon with several comrades of his and movement elders including Ashanti Alston, David Gilbert, dequi kioni-sadiki, Matt Meyer, Meg Starr, & Bilal Sunni-Ali so if you haven't checked that out yet, make sure you do at youtube.com/@makcapitalism. This will be our final episode released in 2023. We have a ton of stuff already being edited for release for 2024. This year we released 67 audio episodes, 26 livestreams and our content was listened to or watched over 640,000 times. We're proud of that, and we're also proud that our programs are still entirely dependent upon regular folks like yourself who listen and watch the work we put out. Today is your last day of 2023 to support us and that would be much appreciated, but also we hope many of you who have not become patrons of the show yet will do so in 2024. And we want to profusely thank everyone who supported us in 2023 for making the show possible for another year. You can support us at patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism This episode was co-edited and co-produced by Aidan Elias and Jared Ware
Despite two historic writers' and actors' strikes, there was a lot of TV to watch this year. In this episode we welcome Abdaljawad Omar back to the podcast. This is another slightly edited livestream that we've converted to an audio podcast. You can check out the video on our YouTube channel, we'll put that link in the show notes. And Also just to note that we've continued to put lots of content out there, including an interview with Boots Riley from The Coup also the director and creator of the film Sorry To Bother You and the hit series I'm A Virgo. We talked to him about labor organizing, the strike wave, solidarity with Palestine and getting principled anticapitalist art through the gauntlet that is Hollywood. I really wanted to get an audio version of this episode with Abdaljawad out this week. Many will know that Refaat Alareer was assassinated this week by the Israeli military. And while we don't talk about Refaat in this conversation directly, I needed to go back and listen again to Abdaljawad's commentary on resistance and on mourning and melancholy in the Palestinian context. I hope that this conversation will be therapeutic for others in a way that enables you to continue to put one foot in front of the other and continue to struggle and resist in whatever capacity you can. And in doing so I hope that we can honor Refaat memory and all of the thousands of other martyrs as we continue to seek to find courageous ways support the struggle for Palestinian liberation, which is an important front in the struggle for the liberation of all people. Just a note this conversation was recorded back on November 30th amid the prisoner exchanges, so if that portion of the conversation where we discuss that feels a bit dated that is the reason why, but it still feels like an important and pertinent discussion nonetheless. We will include the pieces we discussed in the show notes. Lastly I will say that we are launching our Sylvia Wynter study group in the beginning of January you can find out more about that on patreon, and becoming a patron is the best way to support the show, but also to keep up with all of our episodes whether they are released first on YouTube or via this podcast feed. Links: "Can the Palestinian Mourn?" - Abdaljawad Omar's piece (the primary subject of discussion) Judith Butler "The Compass of Mourning" (the piece Abdaljawad responds to) Fundraiser for Sekou Odinga (mentioned in episode) 'Army and Arabs': truth, play, and illusions in the West Bank (another piece written by Abdaljawad that we briefly touch upon)
Boots Riley joins us to talk all things "I'm a Virgo," "Sorry to Bother You," Oakland, the Genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, leftist politics, and much more!

Ever since his 2018 feature debut Sorry to Bother You, Oakland-based musician Boots Riley (of The Coup) has built a reputation as one of our most imaginative, socially-minded filmmakers, combining abject surrealism with biting commentary on the complex interweavings of race and capitalism in American life. (With a healthy dose of absurd comedy, of course.) His followup is the seven-episode Amazon series I'm a Virgo, starring Jharrel Jerome as a 13-foot-tall Black man named Cootie, hidden away since birth by his overprotective parents in Oakland. But when he escapes and finally sees the real world for what it is, he's both amazed and aghast at the joys and horrors it contains. Sure, he finally gets to try fast-food burgers, and falls in love with a charming woman named Flora (Olivia Washington) who has her own sort of superpower. But he also faces the increased commodification of his size and self by a world that views him as an object... or, in the case of real-life superhero The Hero (Walton Goggins), a "thug" that needs to be taken out. Aiding Riley's beautifully maximalist project is indie duo Tune-Yards, aka Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner, who adapt their signature frenetic hooks, and limber vocalizations to a soundscape as riveting as it is unconventional. And now, Garbus and Brenner join me on the show to talk about working with Boots' exacting creative vision, adapting to the world of composing, and what it's like for musicians out there in a world where unionization is on the minds of everyone in the wake of the SAG and WGA strikes. You can find Tune-Yards at their official website here. I'm a Virgo is currently streaming on Prime Video. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Lakeshore Records.

We discuss Boots Riley's Amazon Prime series "I'm a Virgo."
Boots Riley is known nowadays for his work as a writer, but he's been making waves as an artist for years. In his early 20s, he was the frontman and founder of the Coup, a fiercely political hip-hop group from the Bay Area. But in recent years, Boots has made his way over to film-making. In 2018, he wrote and directed his first ever feature film: Sorry To Bother You. If you saw it, you know it is hilarious and scary and insightful and generally very bonkers. And then Boots had another idea. His new show I'm A Virgo takes the word bonkers to new heights, literally. It's a story about a 13-ft-tall giant, a Black teenager living in the Bay Area. But the show's not about his super powers. It's about how he sees himself, and the little personal things about him — like his star sign. I'm a Virgo is a great show, but this isn't an interview about I'm a Virgo. Boots Riley is a writer. And his union, the Writers Guild of America, has been on strike since May. On Bullseye, we'll talk about what is at stake in the dispute between the WGA and the studio heads - represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Plus, we'll get into his early career as a rapper and his roots in activism.
I'm joined virtually by friend and IFJA colleague Ben Sears as we take on the Barbenheimer double feature. First we unbox Barbie, and then we unpack Oppenheimer, which are both playing now in theaters everywhere. We also shout out a couple streaming series we've watched recently, including I'm A Virgo (all episodes streaming on Amazon Prime) and Based On A True Story (all episodes streaming on Peacock). Find us on Facebook, Twitter and Letterboxd.

There is s socially awkward 13 foot giant; a speedster who works at a fast food restaurant, a person with the power of rhetoric, a self proclaimed white hero and sooooooo much social commentary in this epic TV series by Boots Riley. This week on New Release (episode #172) … boring-sized Derrick and Drew discuss the wacky new Boots Riley show about a young black man in Oakland … who also happens to be 13 feet tall. I'm a Virgo is a mix of inventive visual storytelling with lots of opportunity for biting social commentary. And damn funny too. Can you even imagine going 19 years without experiencing a subwoofer or having Bing Bang Burger? Nah. We have plenty to dig into with the first episode of Virgo before we decide if seconds are in order. Also, speaking of seconds, Derrick finally started The Bear season 2! This might be one of the weirdest shows we've ever watched for the podcast. To say anything more about it would be doing you a disservice. Also, we're on Threads now, I guess (@episode_one_pod). What that means for our actual social media presence remains to be seen, but I'd bet money it doesn't move the needle.

MONSTER PARTY WHIPS IT GOOD! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, pay tribute to an iconic character whose adventures have spanned over 30 years. He's everyone's favorite whip-wielding archeologist, which kind of narrows it down. Cue exhilarating John Williams music as we present an episode that could only be titled... INDIANA JONES!!! From that first screening of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK back in 1981, we all were unexpectedly awed by the epic heroism of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. Sure, the following films and TV shows have been a mixed bag, but through better or worse, it's safe to say that Indy has always been a hero we've been rooting for. In this episode, we dissect the Indiana Jones phenomenon in detail. Is Raiders a truly perfect film? Is Temple of Doom too violent and just not Indy enough? Does Last Crusade have too many gags? Is Crystal Skull way too Shia LaBeoufy? Who was The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles actually intended for? Did Dial of Destiny redeem the series? What are the best Indiana Jones collectibles? And how do you explain to your in-laws why you have all those whips? Down to Watch is ready for a big dang summer! Dan and Raul are scanning the sunny horizon for the most interesting and unique shows during the lean months of the television year, and the new Prime series I'm a Virgo is an oasis of originality. A giant black teenager grows up watching a world of exaggerated culture and politics from the safety of his hidden backyard. His parents fear a world that hunts down giants, but a teen's gonna teen, and soon enough, Cootie, the 13-foot-tall 19-year-old, is riding with friends, smoking weed, and tackling a world that wants to use him. Walton Goggins and Mike Epps lend impressive performances to class up the joint, but this is an absurdist comedy with many strange layers & angles. Strange enough for you? Sorry to Bother You creator Boots Riley is back with a delightful Marxist fairy-tale dramedy (...right? Let's just go with it) on Amazon Prime, and Dan D'Addario is back in the guest chair for the first time since EHG Mark 1 to talk about it: how much overt Marxism it gets away with given where we're watching it, the care of the world-building, Jharrel Jerome's storytelling superpowers, and more. We went Around The Dial with Judge Steve Harvey, And Just Like That..., and McEnroe, and Mlle. Caroline was NOT a crackpot for thinking we don't need pilot episodes anymore. After Tara crammed us all into a phone booth for her Saved By The Bell (2020) Canon presentation, Ryan Seacrest won, Will & Grace lost, and we all made sure to park wheels-in for a Bay-Area-based non-regulation Game Time. Don't let silence happen -- it's an all-new Extra Hot Great! GUESTS
I'm A Virgo follows Cootie (Jharrel Jerome), a 13-foot tall young Black man who's grown up completely isolated and makes his first clumsy steps out into the world. Created by filmmaker Boots Riley (Sorry to Bother You), the Amazon Prime series delves into systemic racism and social injustice that forces Cootie to question his naïve faith in the law, and in those who enforce it.

Musician, filmmaker, and wearer of (many) hats Boots Riley has a new series streaming on Amazon Prime Video, called I'm a Virgo. It's as bizarre, serious, and original as his breakout feature, 2018's Sorry to Bother You, a workplace comedy set in a telemarketing office that unfurls as a scathing satire of life under late capitalism. I'm a Virgo is also about the urgent need to redistribute wealth, though it begins as a strange, sweet coming-of-age tale about a 13-foot-tall Black man named Cootie, played by Jharrel Jerome. Having been raised in hiding by his protective aunt and uncle, Cootie stumbles, in the series's opening, into a world of drugs, sex, and radical politics with a ragtag crew of youngsters, navigating an Oakland that is only slightly more dystopian than reality. Riley draws on a wide range of sources, from comic books and superhero movies to T.V. commercials and socialist propaganda, for a tale that is as much a furious critique of the failures of capitalism as it is a rollicking joyride. (There's also cameo from Slavoj Zizek.) Riey joined us for a wide-ranging conversation that touched on the CIA funding of Abstract Expressionism, the history of the Communist Party of the USA, the Writers Guild of America strike, and the challenge of making politically engaged art in an industry dominated by corporations.
