BIG TW ON THIS EPISODE! DAN'S SECOND STORY CONTAINS GRAPHIC DETAILS OF TORTURE AND MURDER. VERY EXPLICIT! "A tap tap tapping beneath his feet made him jump. It sounded like something was just underneath the ice. Caleb watched, frozen in fear…. as the dark outline of a hand pressed against the ice from below. Tap tap tap...." In Dan's half of the show, he takes us to Connecticut! A somewhat hilarious story of a man trying to move his house across a frozen lake leads to the house sinking. And while that is is own kind of horror, the real fun begins when the rumors flare. Supposedly, the house sinks to the bottom of the lake where the piano left inside is now played by ghosts. Turns out, there might be someone under the ice. Then in story number two, we travel to Hong Kong. A sad, tragic story leads to one very scary tale. A young women is brutalize and murdered for stealing from her pimp. After dying at the hands of her torturer, she returns to seek her revenge. Lynze has 3 back to back to back stories that are all just a little bit odd. A UFO sighting that was confirmed by multiple sources, a little girl conjures up a new friend in the mirror and possibly haunted hotel or the very least, a very sketchy situation. Combine all three for maximum spoops! New Merch: New Scared to Death playing cards in the store now at badmagicmerch.com. On the latest Hemmer Time podcast, Bill sits down with former CIA Station Chief, Dan Hoffman, to discuss the current state of Afghanistan and the Taliban. In Dan's opinion, the United States is at a greater risk now from Afghanistan than ever before since the Biden Administration withdrew troops. Dan also notes the unfortunate irony, considering the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks is approaching. Follow Bill on Twitter: @BillHemmer
This is “Events: demystified” brought to you by Tree-Fan Events and I'm your host, Anca. On today's episode I have Dan Berger, the Founder and former CEO of Social Tables - and if you've been in events for at least a day, you've most likely heard and used Social Tables for your events - which he sold to Cvent in October of 2018. Prior to Social Tables, Dan worked in management consulting and served as a member of Congress. During today's episode we get to demystify the idea of community, what does it mean for a post-pandemic world, what does it look like in the marketplace and ultimately, how do you build it for events moving forward with IRL & Hybrid. In Dan's own words: "Belonging serves as an overall indicator of whether or not you've successfully built a real Community. Communities should feel exclusive to those who are a part of them. Why? Part of who we are is defined by who we aren't. When everyone belongs, no one belongs." Stay tuned for additional tips shared by Dan, a true entrepreneur at heart, that left quite a legacy behind at Social Tables. ————————— You can find Dan on these social channels: https://www.danjberger.com/ https://twitter.com/danberger https://www.linkedin.com/in/danberger ————————— For event and podcast updates, tips, and tricks of the trades, follow us on these social channels: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eventsdemystifiedpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/eventsdemystified Podcast Website: https://eventsdemystified.com ————————— Tree-Fan Event's Hybrid Event Production Services: https://treefanevents.com/hybrid-event-services/ ————————— If you liked what you heard, please show us some love by subscribing to this podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or your favorite listening platform. Over his long career, cinematographer Dan Stoloff feels he's always learning as a DP. Every job, even if it seems small, is an opportunity to meet people and build relationships. Dan's latest project, The Boys season two on Amazon Prime, plays with the idea that superheroes in that world are actually just corrupt and possibly psychotic people with special powers, who behave in ways that are anything but super. They have celebrity, play politics, and use publicists and the media to manipulate their image. A small group of people- “The Boys” in the show's title- band together to expose the superheroes and the corporation they work for. Dan likes that the show stays relatable and not to fantastical. When he came on board for the second season of The Boys, Dan knew he wanted to change the look as the story moves forward. The first season presented a slick, neatly packaged corporate world for the superheroes which was shot with a Steadicam, while the grittier world of the regular guys who are trying to expose and take down the supers was done handheld. For the second season, the two worlds have started to clash and unravel, so Dan gave everything a more ragged look. He decided to adhere more closely to the graphic novel of The Boys, sometimes using black silhouettes and contrasts such as subtractive lighting, positioning the actors against a dark background. Dan also enjoyed that season two presented a variety of scenes to shoot with different cameras, equipment, lighting scenarios and lenses, such as a big-budget hero movie, newscasts, an awards show, a country farmhouse and a gritty basement. In Dan's early career, he moved from Boston to New York, after having shot several claymation films. He began shooting comedy projects for Broadway Video, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michael's production company, and got a call to shoot The State, a 1990's MTV sketch comedy show shot on 16mm. But Dan hadn't considered television as a serious place for artistic expression until The Sopranos opened his eyes to the possibilities of a quality series. By then, the mid-budget independent features that Dan had worked on started to dry up, and he began seeking out jobs on television series. After landing his first television series, Memphis Beat, Dan found he likes the precision, continuity, and security of TV. He went on to DP the show Fairly Legal and then worked for nearly five seasons as the cinematographer of the USA show Suits. On Suits, Dan learned a lot about shooting through multiple levels of glass, playing with reflections and bouncing outdoor light to make it look more natural even within an office building or conference room. Prior to The Boys, Dan shot season six of The Americans on FX. In season six, more of The Americans takes place in Russia, and some of the street scenes and exteriors were actually shot there, though most of the interiors were shot on a soundstage. Dan wanted to differentiate between the two countries, keeping the colors to a green and cyan palette for Russia so that it felt cold, while in contrast the American scenes were shot in full, rich color. "Then, as he backed up a step, he saw the top of Victor’s head crane up towards the ceiling, and he heard Victor say, “Hey, were there always chairs on the ceiling?” Andrew’s blood ran cold. The ceiling? What the Hell was he talking about?" Can a house come alive and lure you in? And try to make you stay? In Dan's opening episode story, he tells the tale of two childhood friends, Andrew and Victor. The pair begin work on a very old, Victorian house and the odd occurrences start from the moment they enter the house. What is happening in this house remains a mystery... until the very end. Then it's off to France for the story of the Green Lady of the Château de Brissac. While visiting the ancient chateau, various accounts of a woman in green have been reported. Sometimes she simply floats down the hall. When she looks up at you, her face isn't quite right. Why is that? Tune in to find out just what happened to this woman. Lynze goes back to the basics with a fan story about the Hat Man. In her first story, fan Mike tells his tale of how the Hat Man has been following him for 20+ years. Mike seems to have invited him in when he was just a teenager. It all started with a scrying mirror. If you weren't afraid of playing with mirrors before, you might be now. Then, for her second story, Lynze will have you traveling from Hawaii to Kentucky. A young couple with their sweet daughter move into a home in Kentucky after her Dad was transferred there. The moments of the house revealing its hauntedness come in waves and cause the family to GTFO. Then, for a little bit of fan fiction! Young fan, Trey, sent in an original work. Check it out! Daniel 4:1-37 In Dan. 4, we get to hear, not just about Nebuchadnezzar, but from him.
"She’d later tell investigators, who were still trying to catch Phillip’s killer, that she was hearing noises coming from inside the walls of the home. Scratching, rattling noises. She sometimes could hear what sounded like someone breathing. Or someone whispering. The police came over to investigate…. and found nothing. A few days later, the nurse called them again. This time, she reported seeing an apparition on the back stairs that “chattered its teeth at her” before completely disappearing into the darkness." Dan and Lynze keep the scares coming in this 78th episode of Scared To Death! Dan has the strangest story to kick off episode. It's not what you think and the twist at the end just about sent Lynze over the edge. This story will give you a whole new set of fears. That sound in your attic, might not be what you think it is. And that thing you thought you saw out of the corner of your eye, might not be an apparition. In Dan's second tale, a terrible tragedy seems to be the base for a very haunted former school building in Canada. The building has since been transformed into modern condo's. Are the ghosts of the past haunting the current residents? Lynze brings three juicy tales to her side of the episode. In her first story, we explore the idea that ghosts can be jealous and interfere in our most intimate moments. The story of Brenda and Doug is one that makes you really reconsider your most vulnerable moments. In her second story, Lynze gets all together too excited to try to scare Dan with one helluva creepy clown story! Oh, it's so juicy and will have you hiding all of your dolls. Lastly, in story three, a strange situation in which three people confirm the same thing, never knowing about the other's experiences. How does the evil from the other side seep into our lives? I came across this foundation in the Armenian Genocide episode of Timesuck and - in the age of misinformation, where it seems like holocaust denial and the denial of other atrocities is on the rise thanks to all these fake “truthers” out there - I think it’s very important to support institutions like the USC Shoah foundation. Over 110,000 hours of first hand accounts from survivors of the Holocaust, the Armenian genocide, the Rwandan genocide and other historical atrocities. Today, Dan Neumann and Sam Falco are exploring the topic of teams — and not just Scrum teams, but all teams. As a leader, it can be difficult to manage many lines of communication — especially in larger teams. In Dan and Sam’s conversation, they discuss The Tuckman Model as a thinking framework on how to nurture high-performing teams. From forming to storming to norming and performing, The Tuckman Model lays out the manner in which a leader should engage with teams to become more effective than ever before. Tune in for today’s episode to find out which strategies you can put into play right now to build, lead, and maintain better teams! “A team has shared success or failure. One person can’t succeed [while] another person fails if you’re an actual team. You win or you lose together.” — Sam Falco Key Takeaways What is a team? A handful of people who are all working toward a common goal/objective and are collaborating/working together A team has shared success and failure; You win or you lose together Challenges with larger teams: They tend to get siloed; i.e., a bunch of people is working individually or smaller teams are formed within the larger team and communication is lost With a large group, even with the best intentions, someone gets left out (i.e. someone forgets to tell someone something or is unaware that someone hasn’t heard certain information yet) Increments can be missed if you’re not collaborating and communicating as a team How to (and how not to) form a team: The best teams self-select (people with a stake in the project are much more motivated) If you select random people and put them together in a team they may not function that well together In “The Tuckman Model,” Bruce Tuckman suggests that you need four stages (form, storm, norm, and perform) to tackle tough problems and deliver results as a team Leadership strategies for forming teams (Tuckman’s “forming” phase): It’s important to create a shared vision once a team is formed and then actively move towards fostering connections through being vulnerable and demonstrating vulnerability through group formation activities As a leader, it is your duty to pick the team with purpose; not availability If you’re stuck in the “form” stage, it damages the ability of team members to form the connections that are necessary for teamwork Make sure that the team develops a shared mental image of what their team is like (you could start with something as simple as picking a team name) Leadership strategies for addressing conflict within teams (Tuckman’s “storming” phase): Conflict is not inherently negative but many people have never experienced healthy conflict so it is important to look for ways to build trust As a leader, you have to transition to a “coaching” role when your teams are in a storming phase by helping them develop mutual trust, navigate organizational impediments and conflict, and discussing team working agreements that you can refer to Storming often happens when it is not clear how the team makes decisions (so it is important to find clarity on this early on) Try out the “7 Levels in Delegation Poker Group” activity, linked below Leadership strategies during a team’s “norming” phase: In this phase, teams identify common goals and work toward these common goals with standards and commitment The leader’s role shifts more to empowering their team and getting feedback In this phase, a leader should allow for leadership to emerge within the team (and not being the leader all the time) It’s important to find the balance in contributing and knowing when to allow the team to get somewhere on their own In this stage, it is crucial to maintain the trust that you built during the “forming” and “storming” phases Leadership strategies during a team’s “performing” phase: Once there’s trust and the team can engage in healthy conflict, it is important to focus on goals and new areas that will benefit the team and business Once team members can hold each other accountable in a healthy way then you can established shared goals, make a commitment to these shared goals, and achieve these shared goals as a team After accountability is established, improvement can be built upon that Characteristics of a good leader: They help a team make their decisions They help a team develop mutual trust They identify what behaviors of The Tuckman Model the team is exhibiting and then appropriately engage with the team members They consciously build their team and find techniques that work best with them Mentioned in this Episode: Lines of Communication (Image) Esther DerbyBruce Tuckman — The Tuckman Model 7 Levels in Delegation Poker Group Activity The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable, by Patrick Lencioni Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 117: “Don’t Get Your Agile Shorts in a Knot” Humanocracy: Creating Organizations as Amazing as the People Inside Them, by Gary Hamel and Michele Zanini Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? This week, Dan Neumann is excited to be joined by Ola Berg who is joining virtually all the way from Sweden! Ola is a Change Strategist and Agile Guide for Nimbletribe with a vision that every workplace should be a safe and exciting environment where people look after each other and are super productive — and not because he believes we should be superhumans, but because of the great procedures, collaborations, and culture we can achieve through agility. In Dan and Ola’s conversation, they discuss Agile and the importance of connecting the “whole”; the mindset, the process, and the culture, in order to achieve true, “whole” agility. Dan shares his tips for agile coaches and guides alike on how to be more holistic in your approach to an agile transformation and the actionable steps you can take to get there. Key Takeaways What does “connecting the whole” refer to in agility? It is more than just applying the Agile mindset, following the process, or focusing on culture; you need to consider all three together You need to consider and address all three (i.e. the “whole”): mindset, process, and culture for agile to be successful Ola’s advice in approaching an agile transformation as a whole: Creating a bubble of a common culture where the agile values are prevalent is a crucial element to creating harmony between the process, culture, and the structure Insulate the change from the rest of the organization so that it does not get killed off The change always needs to be contained (if it is not it will spread too fast and will break things) You need to introduce instability to the organization but not all at once (otherwise it will collapse) You need to have elements in the change that are accepted by everyone You need to be a team player and collaborate Change needs to occur within but also in the API Early on, create a map so that you can get situational awareness of what’s going on (from the process of how people are working, the culture, and the structure) “Ultimately, it’s not my job or your job as an agile coach to change things. The only ones who can change things are the people doing the work. So our job must be very much directed towards creating awareness.” — Ola Berg An agile coach or guide must work as if they could be removed at any time; It is crucial that they make sure the team has the same awareness of the environment as themselves The goal as a guide is to instill awareness in all three of these topics: the culture, the processes, and the structure, at the same time Ultimately, the goal is that the team/s will be able to do this themselves as well as the organization’s collective ability and maturity The goal is a mature, self-directed team (but in order to get there it is important to be prepared as an agile coach to be able to play a more “parental” role to one of an advisor) Dump any preconceived notions of what it means to be an agile coach when entering a new organization and instead look at the current situation (i.e. “How do I need to act now in this situation?”, “How mature are the teams?”, etc.) Provide plenty of encouragement at the beginning and present more challenges as the team matures If you’re ever unsure as an agile coach you can directly ask your team (i.e. “Do you want me to be more prescriptive or do you want me to guide you through an exploration process?”) Take small steps first before taking a big leap so you can get a growing understanding of what the big leap/s you need to take is/are Mentioned in this Episode: Ola Berg’s LinkedIn Nimbletribe Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? TW: This first story is graphic in every way. For the first time in Scared To Death history, NO ANNOUNCEMENTS! Woohoo! Kicking it right off with the good stuff, Dan dives into the story of The Haunting of Doris Bither which was the inspiration for the 1978 novel and the 1983 movie, The Entity. It's an interesting and well documented story. How would you react if 30 people crammed into your bedroom and witnessed the paranormal activity you had been claiming was ruining your life? Does that make it real? Listen in to hear this juicy and tragic tale! In Dan's second tale, he explores the possibility of a supposed Ghost Ship, the Mary Celeste. That's not a ship haunted by ghosts but rather, a ship that is found out at sea with no signs of life or death! In Lynze's half of the show, she shares not two but three tales this week! She starts out with a story that will make you think about how old a ghost might be and if ghosts come back to visit on the anniversary of their deaths. In story number two, we head up to visit our friends in Canada to hear the story of The Raven House, a house that might make you wonder if good ghosts and bad ghosts have some kind of relationship in their world. Can a good ghost protect you from a bad ghost? In the final story of the show, Lynze brings back a favorite kind of spirit, the jinn (also, djinn). "She tried to turn to follow him but she couldn’t. She was tied down. She couldn’t move. She could see the dark layout of the tent and cast her eyes around for the unseen presence. Then she heard it. Coming from right above her left ear, a sound like a drill." A quote from the first of Dan's two stories this week. A supposedly haunted island off the coast of Italy, Poveglia takes us on a journey that makes us question, what CAN a spirit, a doctor no less, do to us, from the other side. A few friends travel to the island in search of fun and get so much more than they bargained for. In Dan's second story of the week, we travel to China to talk about a possible/probably alien abduction. In the listener told stories, Lynze prompts us with a question about how possible it may be to control what you see of the other world. In story number two, Lynze goes far outside of her comfort zone to bring you a story about aliens and the plans they might have for a very special father and daughter. Named after the Elton John song “Daniel” it was inevitable that music would play a big part in Dan’s life as it has and in a very positive way I met Dan in the early noughties when I was running Public Sector for Microsoft UK. Dan was a young, fresh faced contractor with lots of energy and commitment and with a real desire to join Microsoft as a full-time employee. I am proud that I was able to give him that opportunity, I just wish I’d done it sooner! Over time, Dan and I bonded and built a friendship around music, and that continued when he moved to Seattle in 2014. That move has allowed him to indulge his passions around music, cars, sailing and travel whilst advancing his career, He now has a lovely house in Alki with a view over the Puget Sound that I will always be slightly envious of. No profile of Dan would be complete without reference to the deep love he has for what he calls “His Crows”. Dan has a wide-ranging taste in music as can be seen in the 71 songs in this episodes playlist (yes, that’s the biggest ever!) . But in amongst all of that there is a love and a passion for the Counting Crows that I absolutely identify with. He has now seen them live 34 times across numerous states and countries and they will always be the soundtrack to his life. In Dan’s view “Rain King” is the ultimate Crows song and it’s appropriately one of his song choices and the name of this episode. You can hear the record breaking Playlist here . Have you built your business from referrals? Are you relying on a few major customers, but find it tricky to sell your product/services to other companies? Have you hired a 6-figure salesperson who through no fault of their own, couldn’t bring you in the sales you expected? Well, maybe it’s time for you to listen to, read a book written by or engage the services of our guest, Dan Englander. Dan’s company, Sales Schema, helps agencies grow by doing outreach, appointment setting, outbound lead generation and support. You can be the best practitioner of your craft, but still feel kind of gross about pushing sales. But Dan talks to Dave and Greg about how sales don’t have to be a hard sale situation. In Dan’s words, “You’re selling, you’re teaching, or you’re learning every day with your market.” Listen in to hear some sales leadership tidbits sure to help your perspective on closing your next deal.
Almost four years ago we decided to take our Star Wars collecting passion to the podcast realm. In that time we've evolved as fans and collectors of Star Wars. This week we talk about recent changes in our Star Wars rooms and what it means for the future of our collecting habits. In Dan's case, monumental change. It's a great story and a good discussion and we're very happy to bring it to you this week.Dan's Previous Collection PhotosMac's Star Wars Room-halfway through 2020Mac's Droid Torture Room DioramaWe open the show by covering Hasbro's August 2020 Fan First Friday livestream. Well, actually we open with some Batman talk. Batfleck or Keaton? Batmens? Some pretty cool 3.75 action figures are headed our way and we're STOKED about the Vintage Collection Tantive IV play set. We also catch up in what new purchases we've found in I Wanted Everything. On today's episode, I sat down with Dan Griffith, President of Griffith Growth Consulting, where Dan helps early stage B2B software and services companies by helping them find and engage their target market, and sell their product. In Dan's experience, there are key mistakes that early stage startups make that inhibit their ability to grow, and he was kind enough to jump on the podcast to share. And I'll note, this advice is absolutely applicable to established organizations who are launches new products. Here's what we discussed: Why not knowing your customer or who your target market is has to be the single biggest mistake a company can make when developing and launching a product How to optimize your product development and launches The question of, "How do you prioritize features in your product if you have no clue who you're building it for?" Why the customer should always trump the "coolness" of the technology How identifying your target market before developing your product creates a shorter path to revenue Why hiring sales people should be a low priority early in the lifecycle of brand new products How implementation and execution is even more important than the technology, the product, or the strategy The difference in approach between blue ocean versus red ocean markets The catch 22 of industry research Why it's so important to work closely with customer success How PMs should develop a competency for sales and understand their organization's sales process --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/productmanagementlessons/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/productmanagementlessons/support
(Daniel 2:28-45, ESV) 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream and the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these: 29 To you, O king, as you lay in bed came thoughts of what would be after this, and he who reveals mysteries made known to you what is to be. 30 But as for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because of any wisdom that I have more than all the living, but in order that the interpretation may be made known to the king, and that you may know the thoughts of your mind. 31 "You saw, O king, and behold, a great image. This image, mighty and of exceeding brightness, stood before you, and its appearance was frightening. 32 The head of this image was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its middle and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 As you looked, a stone was cut out by no human hand, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, all together were broken in pieces, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. 36 "This was the dream. Now we will tell the king its interpretation. 37 You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, 38 and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all-you are the head of gold. 39 Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you, and yet a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. 40 And there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, because iron breaks to pieces and shatters all things. And like iron that crushes, it shall break and crush all these. 41 And as you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom, but some of the firmness of iron shall be in it, just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 As you saw the iron mixed with soft clay, so they will mix with one another in marriage, but they will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever, 45 just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure."/// Dan. 2:28 God . . . reveals mysteries. Just as he did during Joseph's time in Egypt (cf. Gen. 40:8; 41:16). Dan. 2:36–45 we will tell the king its interpretation. Five empires in succession would rule over Israel, here pictured by parts of a statue (body). In Dan. 7, the same empires are represented by four great beasts. These empires are Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, and the later revived Rome (cf. Introduction: Background and Setting), each one differentiated from the previous as indicated by the declining quality of the metal. A stone picturing Christ (Luke 20:18) at his second coming (as the son of man also does in Dan. 7:13–14) will destroy the fourth empire in its final phase with catastrophic suddenness (2:34–35; 44–45).
Dan Stoltz follows a “net giver” leadership philosophy, which emphasizes that life is about giving rather than getting. That focus on serving others has provided a framework for success at SPIRE Credit Union, where Stoltz is president/CEO. When Stoltz took over SPIRE in 2010, the credit union had lost $13 million and its future was uncertain. In Dan’s first four years as CEO, SPIRE doubled its equity, and then began a period of unprecedented growth. SPIRE’s net income of $9 million in 2019 was an all-time high; the best year in the credit union’s 86-year history. Earlier this year Stoltz was named the 2020 Most Admired CEO by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. In this podcast, Dan discusses how SPIRE is navigating the COVID crisis and the importance of maintaining a vital voice in the wake of civil unrest locally.
Former US House Speaker Tip O'Neill said, "All politics are local." It doesn't get more "local" than the race for Maricopa County Treasurer. And it doesn't have a more qualified and experienced candidate than Dan Toporek, Democrat. In Dan's 34 years in the military, responsible for millions in Pentagon programs, he learned to be a "good steward of the people's money." Dan shows real foresight in realizing the office and the county faces tremendous challenges in the loss of sales tax from the state and reduced returns on county investments as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting downturn in the economy.Perhaps, no other local office has a more direct impact on the pocketbook issues of citizens because it collects property taxes, sales tax, business fees and motor vehicle fees. We all need to pay more attention to these down ballot, local elections. Please subscribe to and like Turning Arizona Blue where you get podcasts; visit our Facebook page Turning Arizona Blue; follow us on Twitter @TurningAZ; and email us at turningazblue@gmail.com.
The Showroom is a collaborative speaker series, a partnership between Convo By Design and Walker Zanger and featuring some of the most successful designers who offer some of the very same strategies that they employ in their own firms. Dan Vickery was the runner-up on HGTV’s Design Star, season 4. That bitter sweet second place finish launched his design career, it gave him an opportunity showcase his work on a bigger stage and Dan has made the most of it. Thoughts on reality design shows are mixed, depending who you ask. In Dan’s case, coming from a small town in Oregon, Design Star gave him exposure on a huge platform. It gave hime the exposure to show his skills. From there, Dan has built his personal brand, his design firm and has been creating some truly groundbreaking design. Part of his design specialty includes the selection and use of tile, stone and crafting finished product from slabs. That is brought about this conversation. Due to current circumstances, this conversation was virtual. This talk was moderated by Walker Zanger director of marketing, Erika Edege-Nissen. Are you subscribing to Convo By Design to make sure you never miss a new episode? Ask Alexa or Siri to help you. Say, “hey Siri, play Convo By Design Podcast.” And, she will.Thank you, Dan. Thank you for making the time, thank you Walker Zanger for being an absolute joy to work with. Your partnership is appreciated. Thank you Thermasol for your support of Convo By Design and thank YOU for listening to the show, subscribing to the podcast and coming out to our events. Thanks for listening and until next week, be well and keep creating.
In Dan's final message at NCC, he shows how the Book of Haggai calls its readers to spiritual devotion. He challenges his hearers to be devoted first and foremost to God -- and that though the task is difficult, it does not come without encouragement.
During today's HyperFast Wealth segment, host Dan Lesniak speaks with Matt Fullerton, a real estate investor who also helps educate and train new investors. In this episode, Matt shares how real estate investing has changed during the pandemic, who is selling, and where they are finding the best deals. Episode Highlights: Matt Fullerton is a lifelong sales guy. He began his career selling cars and left that business for private equity. Then he became associated with Express Home Buyers, a real estate investment company that was specializing in flips when he joined. They now specialize in wholesale. He started his own company in late 2018. Matt shares his approach to buying distressed listings from agents. He also helps other established real estate companies by taking their old leads. If he gets them under contract, they split the profits. Their main exit is wholesale with no marketing. Because lender guidelines have tightened up during COVID, they are taking on more flips. During COVID they've seen landlords and vacation rental owners reaching out to sell their properties. On the buyer side, a lot of lending has tightened up. Some deals that made sense three months ago no longer make sense. In Dan's observations, getting investor money has become more difficult during these times. Renovated houses are in very high demand. The inventory shortage encouraged Matt's company to do more flips. Commercial and retail have taken a beating so there will be an opportunity there to pick up some commercial property and redevelop it. They're finding more townhouses and condos than they usually do because people often hold those as rentals. They think there will be a lot of opportunity in PG (Prince George County), Maryland. They're now finding great deals in the Baltimore suburbs. They're always looking for new list providers. They're looking at niche lists. For marketing, they use social media. They decided not to spend a ton of money on marketing during COVID. They don't have a lot of overhead and they don't have debt aside from properties they're working on. Dan has experienced great success with online leads. They founded a REIA group, the Real Deals Real Estate Investors Group. Matt tells people who are new to their REIA to get their real estate license. There's tremendous value in partnering with as many realtors as possible. Matt's advice to a new investor is to not get trapped in other people's dogma. He advises experienced realtors not to get trapped in their own way of thinking. When you're being rigid, consider other ways to look at the situation. The biggest challenge they faced was having to generate leads without any marketing. If you're a decent person and want to help people, you will succeed. Matt shares his love for the outdoors and traveling. In five years he wants to be setting up the companies he's part of for his exit. He will then pursue environmental work. 3 Key Points: COVID has changed the landscape for real estate investing because getting investor money is more difficult right now. There's high demand for renovated homes, which encourages investors to consider flipping. If you're an investor, consider getting your real estate license to reap the benefits of referrals. That message from Dan Peña is spot on! In Dan and my opinions, there has never been a more opportune time for QLA than now. As Dan said. If you don't take advantage of these times you deserve what you get. I couldn't agree more.
How does one go from a dislike of swimming and running, chronic back pain, knee pain, hamstring strains and digestive issues to a quintuple Ironman? Today we introduce guest, Dan Duran, VP of PTA Global (Personal Training Academy Global), as living proof of not only the lifestyle transformation possibility, but also pearls on athletics balanced with a sustainable busy corporate travel lifestyle. Listen to the podcast episode here or on iTunes. Dan shares 4 of his key discoveries (through working with his Personal Trainer, Rodney Corn) that created the transformation into a fitness role model and athlete with longevity: Stress is both mental and physical. In physical activity, “more is better,” needs to be balanced with recovery science in order to find health and fitness. Functional training along the myofascial lines, particularly when it comes to self myofascial release and weight lifting program design, is a key in decreasing joint injuries and repetitive strains. Goal setting is not only for career progress, but also for progress in health, quality of time, longevity, ability to play, and how we can serve as healthy role models for our kids. Anything is possible if you set a goal, set a plan rooted in science, and listen to the team you build to support you. Thank you Dan, for making time to share this transformation and so many attainable strategies for for busy people seeking health, a chance to be in their best shape of their lives year after year, and become healthy role models. The NFL regular season is here, and Rich Campbell and Dan Wiederer are basking in the glow of Bears-Packers. They dive into the power struggle between new Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers (4:58), including whether the quarterback really had back tightness in the preseason (11:20). Switching to the Bears’ challenges, the spotlight shines on tight end Trey Burton in That’s Just Stupid (20:35). Specifically, will he ever be healthy? Rich and Dan are skeptical. In Dan’s Three Keys to Thursday’s game, the discussion is on Matt Nagy and Mitch Trubisky trying to make magic (27:50), Eddy Pineiro trying to make kicks (32:50) and the Bears defense trying to account for Packers running back Aaron Jones (36:58). Recorded: 9 April 2019 Published: 9 April 2019 Released: 10 April 2019 Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/COaeyovXFBo I respect this man’s story. Dan had a traumatic event in his life when he was young, when his mother died after being in a coma for 18 months. Anyone who has been through such trauma and come out on the other side as a whole human being has a story to tell. In Dan’s case, this event had a lot to do with why he believes in God. During that time, he prayed to God, and God answered. I can feel the impact of that, even as someone who doesn’t believe in God. Dan was in need, and he feels like God showed up in just the right moment. That is incredibly powerful. Which is what made this conversation especially sensitive. How do we talk about someone’s beliefs when those beliefs are loaded with emotional significance? Is it even possible to call such beliefs into question…without being a jerk? (This week CWC is off due to a live Golden State Warriors basketball game on our home station KSRO in Santa Rosa. For the podcast, here is a reprise of our Aug. 9, 2017 show featuring Rex Pickett, author of Sideways, and Trevor Durling, winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard.) Today’s pre-show guest is Rex Pickett, author of Sideways. The main show guest is Trevor Durling, Winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard. In the live segment before CWC begins at the top of the hour, Steve and Dan visit with Rex Pickett, author of Sideways, the book, movie and now stage play. Then after the main show, we will hear more of Steve’s interview with Rex Pickett. First, Dan tells that somebody called him on the telephone way back in the ‘90s when he was writing at the LA Times, to ask him about Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez, the area where the book is set. Dan never got his name, and after the movie came out, Dan always assumed the call had come from Rex, but Rex says he wasn’t the caller. (The stage adaptation played at the Left Edge Theater in Santa Rosa at the Luther Burbank Center in Aug. 2017.) The movie Sideways was not really about Merlot, it was more about Pinot Noir, or people, really. The situation of the market for Merlot changed as a consequence of the movie. The book was about Pinot Noir, not about Merlot. Dan says that Rex put his finger on the pulse of the industry at the time, what people were talking about in the industry then, which was that Pinot Noir was starting to take off in the US and particularly in cooler regions, Santa Barbara and Sonoma Counties in particular. But it was a book about personalities and people, and only incidentally about wine. In Dan’s opinion, it was a great book and movie but it really tapped into something that was more wine-related than what Rex was hoping for. Rex tells that he was starting to go to wine tastings and loved the lyricism and poetry about describing wine, (apart from some pretentiousness). Rex didn’t know that the wine tasting scene would become so important in the movie. Merlot had been “overcropped” at the time and the movie thinned out the herd, as a lot of poor Merlot producers no longer make it. They agree that the movie did a lot for Pinot Noir and at that time we were starting to get away from the routine Cabernet-Chardonnay and into other wines and Pinot Noir was the one that first broke through, and that the movie picked up on that momentary market trend. Dan points out that in 1992 California had 8,000 acres of Merlot. In 1995, there were 58,000 acres of Merlot. Rex says they were mechanized-farming it and Steve says it just wasn’t that good. Dan says there is good Merlot all over the place now but you have to be very careful what you buy because we’re down to about 29,000 arcres now, which is way too much, and planted in the wrong places. Steve tells that his friend Jim from BV is there and he talks about when they were in DC, in April. Jim was there, he started singing and Steve was playing piano. Later we will hear a musical excerpt. At the intro to the main show, Steve re-introduces Rex Pickett, author of the book, screenplay and the new stage adaptation of Sideways). Dan introduces Trevor Durling, winemaker at BV, which has been around since 1900. It was the home of the great André Tchelistcheff, starting in the 1930s up to around 1973. The BV style of the wines had been formed and it’s not easy to shift. It’s like turning an ocean liner. The problem always had been to use French oak versus American oak. BV started using American oak, for Cabernet. The fact is that BV didn’t make certain grapes that had become popular, such as Zinfandel. Dan talked to André about that and André said he would not know how to make Zinfandel, as he didn’t know it. BV is a historic property and makes more varieties now. The flagship is still the BV Private Reserve. Trevor tells that was born and raised in Santa Rosa and had wine at the dinner table from...
What’s the secret to a great radio campaign? If anyone knows it is today’s guest. Having written, directed and produced more than 1,000 award-winning national and international radio spots, Dan Price is the president, owner and partner at Oink Ink Radio, the oldest and largest radio ad agency in the U.S. Oink Ink Radio What’s the story behind the name Oink Ink Radio. Honestly, Dan wishes it was funnier. When Dan left a New York-based production company to join another in Los Angeles, both companies got into a heated legal battle over him. Dan decided to go on his own with the name “Ham Radio.” The Internet was barely invented at the time, so he was initially unaware that there was another company, also based in New York, doing the same thing with the same name. Having already created the artwork, logo and rubber pig noses to promote his new company, Dan realized their company name had to be at least pig-related. Hence, Oink Ink Radio. Impact of Technology on Radio Dan says the newest technology impacting what they do is short form and dynamic radio. The short form forces the writer to create an ad so simple, it can easily be understood in 5- to 15-seconds. Dynamic radio is a little more complicated. It’s the real-time compilation of an audio spot on the fly using data points like weather, time of day, or day of the week. It can be highly targeted depending on who is listening, on what device, the activities they are participating in or the music they enjoy. New, highly customized spots are created by selecting pieces of audio with these various recorded data points and assembling them together instantly. Dan says it’s an incredible way to be more relevant and is something that traditional radio is not yet able to do. Other new audio platforms include streaming, podcasting, sonic branding and soon-to-be voice command and in-car. In Dan’s opinion, traditional radio will never die, but it will be consumed differently. Four Elements to Great Radio Copy No radio spot should ever be produced without achieving the following: It needs to immediately gain the attention of the listener. It must tell a relatable story to engage the listener. It should solve a problem using the product or service. Must reward the listener for the time they gave the ad in a creative or clever way. Dan provides three radio spots that demonstrate the effective use of these elements. Talent is also critical. Oink has a rule that all scripts are written to the half-second before they go into a studio to record. Most scripts come in much shorter than standard spot times, so that more time is spent with the talent and less on trying to cut precious seconds to make the copy fit. Ad Budgets While Dan works with larger brands that do not have as many concerns over budget, Dan believes clients should invest more on the front end creating the radio spots, perhaps spending 15 percent of the media budget instead of 5 percent. This is particularly true when the client is spending a lot of money on the backend to advertise. The State of Radio Dan says radio is here to stay and is arguably the hottest medium at the moment. Radio is intimate, personal and very powerful. If he was to predict the next advances in audio advertising, Dan thinks it will involve interactive voice command and connected home. In Dan. 12:13 we find God’s blessings on those who make it to the end of the 1,335 days of the Great Tribulation. Some people don’t believe the 1,335 days are actual real days – but they are. God has allotted this final block of time for the Devil to play out on the planet earth and expose his true wicked character. During these final days the Holy Spirit will be poured out in great measure to everyone on earth and will impress on their minds and hearts that the message the 144,000 is delivering is TRUE and from the Bible. Looking back over your life, how many things would you say happened due to perfect timing? It's a very interesting question and one that Dan Pink has concluded is not so much a matter of random things coming together, but is actually something we can have a great deal of influence over. I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to talk with Dan about his newest book, “When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing.” In our conversation, Dan shared a wealth of great information about how we can become masters of the daily timing inherent in our lives. You won't want to miss the insights Dan shares. We tend to think that timing is random - but timing is really an art form that we can cultivate and systematize for our advantage It's quite ironic that among the many things we try to take control of in order to be productive and effective, one of the most influential pieces of what enables both productivity and success is often completely ignored. That influential piece is timing. Dan Pink has spent the last few years scouring volumes of research that demonstrate the timing is not a random chance thing that we should hope and pray for, it is something we should take control of. In Dan's words, “The use of timing is an art form and we can cultivate and systematize it for our advantage.” The story of 500 million Tweets and a predictable pattern of mood in the course of a day shows that we can make systematically better decisions about when we do things Can you imagine what it would be like to analyze 500 million tweets in a research study? One of the studies Dan Pink devoured in his examination of timing was a deep dive into just that. What was discovered through the study was amazing! The research shows that there is a predictable pattern of mood that cycles up and down throughout the course of a day. When you understand that and that you have your own cycle of moods, you can begin to systematically make better decisions about the types of things you do at certain times of the day. That's one of the things that Dan says the average person can add to their toolbox to help them become more productive in the work they do. Dan Pink shares how digital tools can disrupt our ability to fuel creativity and productivity Digital tools are a wonderful addition to the resources we have that enable us to be productive. But they can also be a powerful distraction to becoming a master of perfect timing. Those who are mindful of the need to be focus on and attuned to the present moment will take control of their devices instead of letting their devices take control of them. Dan demonstrated that kind of wisdom during our conversation by keeping his phone away from him while he was having a conversation with me. He said he's convinced that the absence of distraction that comes from the notifications and lights on his smartphone, enabled him to concentrate more, give greater value to you, the listener, and recall information he needed for our talk in a much more effective manner. Dan has a handful of suggestions just like this that you can apply to your daily life, so be sure you take the time to listen. How can you manage the timing of your day to be more creative and productive? Dan Pink has practical advice you can apply immediately For the end of this conversation with Dan Pink, I was very curious how he would suggest the average person could take control of the timing issues of their day and thereby enhance their creativity and productivity. True to form, Dan did not disappoint. His advice centered around the diligent planning of breaks throughout the day, wise use of the different time cycles of the day, and much more. If you would like to learn how you can become a master a perfect timing in your own life, you need to listen to this episode and read Dan's new book. perfect timing in your own life, you need to listen to this episode and read Dan's new book. Show Notes In this episode of Food, Success & Life for the Modern Woman, Dan Pardi discusses how he and his team help people make behavior changes, leading to their ultimate goal. They focus on food, movement, and sleep as fundamental domains of your health practice. They provide lifestyle guidance and help you track key behaviors so you know if you’re living within your ‘Zone of HealthTM’ on a daily-to-weekly basis. What is the Human Operating System? An application to help people implement ideas about how to affect behavior in a positive way. In order to be able to adopt this knowledge and change behavior, you need to be able to answer these 4 questions: Why you should do it? How do you do it? Are you doing it? Is it working? Many people have all the best intentions of making a change, maybe even have a plan, but never quite seem to follow through. With HumanOS, you gain the ability to understand why we change our behavior, one way or another. With the HumanOS model, you have the ability to pull through, and make the change in behavior. We have to disconvenience ourselvess to make change. Like not eating donuts for breakfast every morning. Change can happen in the moment. Who can use HumanOS? People that are not trying to solve a specific problem right now. These are better-agers. Trying to age gracefully and keep the performance they currently have. There’s motivation to do well. They are optimizers- these are people that care to perform well in activity or mentally or both. They are trying to optimize their experience with new techniques. And then there’s people that want to make a change, like lose weight. They are not at the weight they want to be and have a motivation to make change. And people who have been diagnosed with something and have an immediate pain. For example someone who has diabetes and wants to find a way to eliminate that pain. Create Lasting Behavior Change There are great direction followers. People who are like that are very good at following direction and getting something done. They’ll get results, but results will not last because they didn’t’ develop a habit, they followed direction. The other group of people are those who learned along the way. They took a good understanding of the subject they were covering. Those people become independent and knowledgeable. This is what we all want. In Dan’s courses, they try to persuade people to understand the subject and believe that it is the right way. And then give people a clear path to get the results. As well as getting feedback from the users. They also take into account failure, because failure is a part of everything and it needs to be built in. Food, Movement and Sleep For Sleep: Dan encourages people to aim to get complete sleep. Means you’re waking naturally, because you’re getting enough sleep. That’s a goal. Maintain lights off at night because it determines our circadium rhythm. How much light we get will determine how much sleep we get and how restorative it is. Dimming nights in the evening will help. For Exercise: The best guidance to determine what level of physical activity we need is from the Department of Health and Human Services which put out a weekly exercise recommendation. They’re created by an advisory committee of experts every 8 years. They analyze all the literature that has come out. The next time the committee gets together there will be a whole slew of new information. We also know that just sitting too much is not good. We need to get up and move, low intensity. If it’s easy and simple, more people will do it. We do need to incorporate intensity to maintain muscle. For nutrition: This is challenging. But we do know a lot by trying to eat whole, fresh foods, and portion control. You will go a long way by consuming the fewest items out of a package. We want to avoid refined and over processed foods. And to have plant substances, fiber, and phytonutrients, the compounds that come out of these plants. They help cure our bodies in very complex ways. Dan’s 3 Habits to Ensure His Health Journey: InTune training: integrative and opportunistic training. Movement can happen anywhere. 10-20 minute sunlight exposure on skin. Sleep routine, including using his chilipad. Dan Meadors is one-half of TheWholesaleFormula.com. He and his partner Eric Lambert began selling on Amazon as a hobby with an original investment of only $600. They would work nights and weekends buying products on clearance at local retail stores and selling them on Amazon for profit. It took only a few months before they saw the potential to turn this hobby into a business and they both left their day jobs to sell on Amazon full-time. Since then they have been able to generate over $13,000,000 in total sales on Amazon. Note: Click here to download Dan’s top wholesaling selling tips from this episode. Most of Side Hustle Nation will be familiar with the Amazon FBA program, but Dan's strategy is a bit different from the retail arbitrage and private label strategies we've covered in the past. In Dan's case, he's buying inventory at wholesale prices from a brand or manufacturer, instead of trolling the clearance section at Walmart or having a product built specifically for him by a manufacturer. Then, like the other Amazon FBA business models, it's on him to list and sell it through Amazon. In this episode, Dan talks me through everything you need to know to get started with wholesaling on Amazon, including how to target potential products and brands to sell, and how to reach out to them in a helpful way.

Personally I am so excited to share this podcast with you, both because it is the first Zimplifi Podcast, but also because you really can learn a lot about starting up a company and working with innovation in corporate companies from Dan's story and experiences. You will learn about: What elements are the most important, when starting up a business or working with innovation (inside a company or as a start up). Why it is so important to involve your users and customers during the development, and how you do it…..and why failing fast is so important. Why working with the entire customer experience is an important differentiator and how you can work with it in your company. The differences of working with innovation in corporate and start up companies, and what the two worlds, can learn of each other Why and how important leadership is, when working with innovation and building a business And why you should not have a product or a technology on the roadmap, if it does not make any value for the customer and user…. Dan Ariely is a researcher on the forefront of behavioral science. He specializes in understanding irrational behavior, for example, why do people take less candy if you give it out for free, than if you charge a penny for all the candy you want? Dan actively works to find ways to change behavior for the better using this knowledge. Dan is a professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University. He's also the founder of the Center for Advanced Hindsight, which helps companies improve well-being using behavioral science. This week, Tom must steer the Tottenham Way ship alone, with Dan going on a jolly for the second time in as many months. In Dan's absence, Sean Walsh and Phil (@singlemaltsuds) return for their first appearances of the season to first discuss the frustrating but ultimately fortunate draw with Liverpool. Again, we must talk about Eriksen, but Kane, Alli and the increasingly obvious absence of Dembele are discussed. With the international break coming up, this week is also all about the transfer window, and with so many players seemingly leaving - including Nacer Chadli, whose impact is analysed - why aren't we seeing any replacements and who should they be? With this in mind, listener questions are answered including what impact Paul Mitchell's resignation has had and our favourite protracted transfer sagas. There are a *lot* to choose from. COYS.
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! If you’re a therapist, my guest today is someone who needs no introduction. Dr. Dan Siegel is my guest, and he explains the concept of interpersonal neurobiology, the nature of the mind, integration and “Mwe”. He shares his story of becoming interested in the brain and the mind beginning in college, and continuing through his medical school training. He explains his disappointment at discovering in medical school in the late 1980’s that there did not seem to be a science of the mind that psychiatry was using to inform mental health work. He wanted to understand both how the body functions and how our mental lives play a part in keeping us alive. He explains that interpersonal neurobiology is not a branch of neurobiology, but a framework combining many disciplines including the mental health fields of psychology, psychiatry, counseling, social work, as well as sociology, philosophy, quantum physics, math and others to answer the question “what is the mind?” He explains that he has interviewed over 100,000 people and none of them had ever had any training in what the mind is, which is a real gap in knowledge considering that we in the mental health field are working in the mind. That is what our work is. He tells us that if the mind is where the self comes from, then the who, what, why, when and where can be deepened by asking the question about what the mind is, why it exists, where is it, what’s its function. Dan argues we need to understand the mind to understand all of these questions. He discusses this in depth in his new book, Mind: A Journey to the Heart of Being Human, which is coming out in Fall of 2016. He notes that the field called Philosophy of mind discourages asking what is the mind. Psychiatry doesn’t have a definition of the mind. Psychology doesn’t have a definition and says it’s a useful placeholder. What is a healthy mind? What’s a healthy thought? Some topics Dan discusses in this episode: Mind is not emotions in this definition. It includes emotions, feelings, anything you can be subjectively aware of. In Dan’s definition, consciousness, subjective experience and information processing are the 3 parts of the mind. He talks about how he noticed that what we call mental health disorders fit into a pattern of chaos and rigidity. In probability theory of math there was an area of study which related to this which states that a complex system has three characteristics: It’s open to influences from outside of self; capable of being chaotic and it’s non-linear. It’s a self organizing, embodied and relational process. This answer comes from math. He explains that in mental health, integration defines health. He states that the best definition of mental health is that the system is Flexible, Adaptive, Coherent, Energized and Stable (FACES). Where attention goes, neural firing flows, neural connection grows Dan talks about how therapists can use these concepts to help clients live happier and more fulfilling lives, not just lives of being free from mental health symptoms. We had a very thought-provoking discussion and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Ep. 46 Special: Origin of Roderick on the Line - Roderick on the Line on Huffduffer 5by5 | Back to Work #31: You Can Polish AC/DC All Day Long (August 30, 2011) Hey, gang. Merlin here. One year ago this week, the first episode of Roderick on the Line went up. To commemorate the occasion, I wanted to share a little bit of history with you, as well as just say, “thanks.” Here’s the thing: John and I have been pals for about a decade now. And, as we’ve discussed on the program from time to time, we’ve had a longstanding habit of engaging in very, very long conversations, both in-person and on the phone, about pretty much any topic you can imagine. A fact born out by any of the 40+ episodes of this show so far. Now, in terms of the pre-pre-history of RotL, a seed was planted when I interviewed John for a thing I used to do called, The Merlin Show (n.b.: you can find video and audio of that interview over here). It was a riot to do, and I really recommend checking it out for both Roderick newbies and completists alike. You will find it very helpful. As you do. But, the real impetus for this show arose by accident last Summer, when my Back to Work co-host, Dan Benjamin, was on paternity leave. In Dan’s brief absence, I decided to interview three interesting friends about their life and how they work. One of my victims was, of course, The Great Man himself—the bearded oracle who ended up being the titular co-host of this very program: Mr. John Morgan Roderick. On that episode, John and I talked about lots of different stuff to be sure (full show notes below), but, as a careful listener of the current program will immediately pick up, you will also hear the genesis of what would become numerous leitmotifs from what would soon become the canonical RotL. There’s John’s deep historical pedagogy. There’s John’s perspicacious cultural criticism. There’s John’s first singing my name to the tune of Janet Jackson’s 1986 hit, “Nasty.” There’s John (again) hearing my formal pitch to do a new podcast called, “Roderick on the Line.” And, yes: there is John’s bell. I hope you will enjoy this important cultural document and are able to appreciate its gravitas as the undergirding for this august platform by which John helps so many people each week. And, let it not go without saying, my having the chance to do this show with John every week is one of the joys of my life. I look forward to recording it, I look forward to “editing” it, and, yes, I really look forward to hearing the finished product. I’m proud to be involved, and I’m really grateful to my great pal for making the time to do it. Finally, thanks to all of you for a year of listening and being helped. You are Generation Super Train, and, I hope to God you survive to find a tolerable position in John’s horribly twisted Utopian Dystopia. In any case. Please continue.
