What if the challenges life throws at you aren't roadblocks but stepping stones to something greater? Born almost blind, Jennie Coleman never saw the world like others until a miraculous surgery at 13 changed everything. But that was just the beginning. She built a trailblazing career at Bombardier, specializing in corporate strategy and travelling between Montreal, Zurich, Berlin, and Beijing. Then, life threw her another challenge: her daughter Laura, born with an ultra-rare genetic mutation, forever needed care. Jennie could have retreated, but instead, she redefined success. Jennie left the corporate world, took a leap of faith, and bought a business she knew nothing about—Equifruit, a Fairtrade banana company. And with the same resilience that carried her through every chapter of her life, she turned it into a force for good, fighting for fair wages, sustainability, and ethical trade.  Jennie's journey—from corporate warrior to purpose-driven entrepreneur—earned her the title of RBC Momentum Award Winner. The Harvard Business School has published a case on her accomplishments, and Jennie has been named Canada's Most Admired CEO by Waterson Human Capital.  But her story isn't just about business. It's about family, and humanity, and someone who sees beyond profit to a higher purpose.   To learn more about Equifruit,  https://equifruit.com/en/

How are you using your business as a vehicle for Kingdom impact? In this episode, Jeff, Jeff, and Mike discuss: Successfully bridging the worlds between tech, business, and faith. Building the Kingdom and a burned-down mansion.  Having a faith walk that includes God in your business.Returning to the true and important messages in the world of the wrong messages on social media.   Key Takeaways: Follow the favor. Where do you see success in your life? Serve God and His Kingdom there. The primary way that God designed impact in the world was not through organized religion but through business and entrepreneurship. The call to ministry does not need to be within the four walls of a church or in a non-profit organization. Our activities are the outward, visible proof of our faith in Jesus.   "If you can get to a place where you see the business as a vehicle for Kingdom impact, and then allow the business to be used for Kingdom impact, which means you're going to make less money because Jesus is going to make more, what actually happens is that's when you live your best life." —  Mike Thakur Episode References: Burned Down Mansion Zillow: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/5603-Winslow-Rd-LOT-107-Franklin-TN-37064/2054800169_zpid/ About Mike Thakur: Mike Thakur is an award-winning CEO, adventurous entrepreneur, and content creator who's built a career at the intersection of business, purpose, and impact. From co-founding an internet company in the UK before Google was a household name, to leading $100 million sales teams and running operations for the secret service for billionaires, his journey is marked by bold decisions and innovative thinking. Now based in Tennessee, after nearly 20 years in Texas, Mike is passionate about blending business and tech to create meaningful change in communities. He's one of Houston's ‘Most Admired CEOs,' a two-time Guinness World Record participant, and author of ‘Mike Drop', where he shows how entrepreneurship can be a powerful tool for making a real difference. Whether it's a keynote talk or a podcast conversation, Mike offers inspiring stories, practical insights, and a clear vision for how purpose-driven business can change lives. Connect with Mike Thakur:Website: https://www.mikethakur.com/ Email: info@mikethakur.comBook: Mike Drop: https://www.mikethakur.com/mike-drop-bookInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/realmikethakur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@realmikethakurLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikethakur/The Mike Thakur Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/2s1Pu9y2VAl7GSvHUPFzCL    Connect with Jeff Thomas: Website: https://www.arkosglobal.com/Podcast: https://www.generousbusinessowner.com/Book: https://www.arkosglobal.com/trading-upEmail: jeff.thomas@arkosglobal.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/ArkosGlobalAdv Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/arkosglobal/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/arkosglobaladvisorsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/arkosglobaladvisors/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLUYpPwkHH7JrP6PrbHeBxw

Like many communities, Louisville has a shortage of teachers. We talk about efforts to address it on this week's Access Louisville podcast. Rowan Claypool, founder and CEO of Teach Kentucky, is on the show to talk about his organization's work. Founded in 2003, Teach Kentucky aims to help college graduates launch their teaching careers in Louisville's public schools. The organization has grown from bringing two teacher candidates in its first year to annually bringing a new 40+ person cohort of aspiring teachers from across the nation to the city, according to its website. On the show Claypool explains that they started 24 years ago when the idea of a teacher shortage was just a looming threat. Today it's actually severe and taking place all over the country. "What we discovered in building the program is there's always a shortage of good teachers at all times, forever," he said. With that, Jefferson County Public Schools needs the organization to bring people  from outside the community because the community itself can't produce enough teachers, he said. Fortunately, the district pays its teachers well and has some aggressive relocation incentives. There's more details on how the organization is recruiting teachers here and some of the lessons they've learned over the years on the episode. Also of note, Claypool is among honorees for Louisville Business First's Most Admired CEOs program. Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First.

He is a successful investor in energy, biotech, and ag tech. Nathaniel was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and a Most Admired CEO in Oklahoma by the Journal Record.Worst investment everAbout 10 years ago, Nathaniel's company evaluated new oil and gas fields that they believed were underdeveloped or underdeveloped. The company developed competence in using analytical methods using high science to assess potential areas. Then, it deployed the infrastructure and equipment personnel to prove and develop it. The company would do that and increase production throughout a new area and then sell it to a bigger, more established oil and gas company. After much success with that model, the company decided to do it again. They believed they had the Midas touch. They were now working with some very well-established and accomplished geologists and geoscientists. This time, they took the model outside of their home state of Oklahoma to Michigan. In this new location, they went the extra mile. They introduced a new technology that no other company had used before. This was cash-intensive, and they had to find an investor. They needed upfront capital to lease the acreage and go through the many regulatory steps to have the right to operate in a new environment. Unfortunately, the project was an absolute commercial zero.Lessons learnedCategorize risks.Limit your investments to one risk.Do one risk at a time and do it sequentially.Andrew's takeawaysIsolate your risks.Actionable adviceIf embarking on something with many firsts or new experiences, partner with someone who knows that territory. Instead, Perdue is urging both parties to resolve the matter through conversation. The Faculty Senate had asked the university system to mediate the dispute, but Perdue and USG Chief Academic Officer Ashwani Monga rejected that request, stating that discussions should be directly between the Faculty Senate and GGC leadership. Chronic absenteeism is defined as a student missing 10% of enrolled school days during the year, regardless of whether the absences are excused or not. GCPS officials see it as a significant challenge to student performance and noted that students who are chronically absent perform significantly below their peers who regularly attend school. While chronic absenteeism is highest in high schools, Gwinnett's elementary schools also see high levels, particularly among kindergartners. Demographically, Hispanic students have the highest percentage of chronic absences, followed by American Indian, multiracial, Black, White, and Asian students. GCPS is implementing a multi-tiered approach to address chronic absenteeism, including preventative measures and awareness campaigns.   STORY 3: Gwinnett police working to identify suspect accused of breaking into urgent care Gwinnett County police are searching for a suspect who burglarized an urgent care facility and a neighboring business in Duluth. The break-ins occurred on September 28, with the suspect entering North Georgia Urgent Care and a nearby business, stealing approximately $7,200. There's so much more packed within the hour, so don't miss it!  OUR GUEST  Stephanie Stuckey  Stephanie Stuckey* is CEO of Stuckey's, known for generations as a highway oasis serving up pecan log rolls and kitschy souvenirs. Founded in 1937 by her grandfather, W.S. Stuckey, Sr. in Eastman, Georgia, Stuckey's grew into over 350 stores nationwide by its peak in the 1970's.   The company was sold in 1964 and sadly declined for decades under a series of corporate owners. Fortunately, Stuckey's returned to the family in 1985 under the leadership of W.S. Bill Stuckey, JR. and is now being continued with Bill's daughter, Stephanie.    The Company acquired a pecan shelling and candy plant in Wrens, GA in January of 2021 and have been scaling production of the Stuckey's branded snacks and sweets – including the iconic pecan log roll – to be sold in almost 5,000 retail stores nationwide.   Stephanie purchased Stuckey's in November of 2019 and assumed the role of CEO.   Stephanie's achievements include being named one of the Most Admired CEOs of 2022 by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, 100 Most Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend Magazine and a graduate of Leadership Atlanta. She serves on the corporate board for Bealls, a Florida-based retailer with more than 550 stores.  The Stuckey's story has been featured recently in the New York Times Sunday Business Section, the TODAY Show, and The Washington Post.  When she's not running Stuckey's, Stephanie enjoys traveling by car to explore the back roads of America and pulling over at every boiled peanut stand and the World's Largest Ball of Twine.  ---  If you're a family business or a family business consultant and want to be on the show, share your story and help other family businesses, send us an email to producer@thefamilybizshow.com or visit us at The Family Biz Show | Family Business Podcast With Michael Palumbos (familywealthandlegacy.com) to fill out our web form!  -  CRN-5604187-040323  *not affiliated with Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp.  Michael Palumbos is a registered representative of Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp. Speaking to Influence
Ep 121: Nick Bayer - CEO and Founder Saxby's: Apprenticeship and Making Life Better

Speaking to Influence

How can coffee change the world? According to Saxby's CEO and Founder, Nick Bayer, it begins with educating young entrepreneurs. This week Laura and Nick discuss how Saxby's is empowering young people to embrace the humanity of the hospitality industry and build a business that creates an impact.   Here are a few things you'll learn during this conversation: How Saxby's created an academic experience while building real businesses Why every young entrepreneur needs a course in critical thinking skills for business How to develop your empathy skills Why Saxby's made B Corp status a priority What you can do to hold your team accountable to your mission and values   During the 24-Hour Influence Challenge, Nick encourages you to respond to all digital communication within 24 hours and evaluate how it impacts trust and relationship building.   Nick Bayer has always been in the business of bringing people together, whether it's as one of Philadelphia Business Journal's "Most Admired CEOs" or as a consummate team captain since Little League. So when he created Saxbys in 2005, Nick never really considered it to be a coffee company — instead, it's a social impact company fueled by amazing food, beverage, and hospitality. Saxbys has since grown from one corner café to a nearly 30-unit, Philadelphia-based business with a singular mission: Make Life Better.   For Nick Bayer, “making life better" began by fostering an O.D.D (outgoing, detail-oriented, and disciplined) team, committed to the betterment of the communities it serves and aligned by their shared entrepreneurial spirit and Saxbys' core values. Today, that team spans over 500 members across the Northeast that represent the change-makers of tomorrow. To that point, Bayer introduced Saxbys' pioneering Experiential Learning Program (ELP) in 2015 in partnership with Drexel University — the nation's first entirely student-run cafe where students earn full academic credit and wages through a university cooperative education program.   Bayer's vision for the program is to embolden the next generation of entrepreneurs, providing undergrad students with tangible experience as a supplement to traditional classroom learning. In five short years, one ELP cafe has blossomed to a dozen, with five more partnerships opening in the Fall of 2021.   Nick is currently the Entrepreneur in Residence at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, an adjunct professor at Drexel University and the Executive in Residence at Temple University's Fox School of Business.   He serves on the Board of The Franklin Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region, the Community College of Philadelphia, Drexel University's Close School of Entrepreneurship and Drexel's Steinbright Career Development Center, as well as being a Corporate Council Member for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He has been recognized as the "Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, EY's "Social Entrepreneur of the Year" and among the “100 Most Powerful Business Leaders in Philadelphia” by the Philadelphia Business Journal.   He resides in Center City Philadelphia with his wife Haley and son Luke.   You can connect with Nick in the following ways: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickbayer6/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itsnickbayer/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/nickbayer Company Website: https://www.saxbyscoffee.com/   To learn more about Dr. Laura Sicola and how mastering influence can impact your success go to https://www.speakingtoinfluence.com/quickstart and download the quick start guide for mastering the three C's of influence.   You can connect with Laura in the following ways:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlaurasicola LinkedIn Business Page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/vocal-impact-productions/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/VocalImpactProductions Facebook: Vocal Impact Productions Twitter: @Laura Sicola  Instagram: @VocalImpactProductionsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
