In this episode of Wine Road, hosts Marcy Gordon and Beth Costa (0:00-0:24) introduce the show and thank sponsors Ron Rubin and River Road Family Vineyards and Winery for their support.   They welcome Crystalyn Hackett, owner of Spicy Vines, as their guest (0:49-1:00). Crystalyn shares her excitement about being on the show and introduces a spiced wine she brought, which ties into her personal story and the origins of Spicy Vines (1:23-2:55). The wine, described as "Christmas in a glass," is a blend of Grenache, Zinfandel, Carignan, and Petite Syrah, infused with holiday spices and a hint of brandy, evoking cozy, festive feelings (2:05-2:33). Crystalyn recounts her journey, starting with her time as a competitive equestrian in Germany, where she realized her entrepreneurial aspirations (3:08-4:46). After traveling and brainstorming ideas, she returned to California and created her first spiced wine, inspired by a drink she had in Germany (6:00-7:16). Despite having no prior experience in the wine industry, she spent a year perfecting the formula and navigating regulatory challenges to define and legally categorize "spiced wine" (8:03-9:22). Crystalyn explains how she built Spicy Vines from scratch, starting with events in San Francisco and eventually partnering with her now-husband, Doug, who became the winemaker (10:29-11:19). Together, they expanded their portfolio to include Zinfandel, Syrah, rosé, and other varietals, focusing on high-quality, small-batch production (12:12-13:07). Their Healdsburg tasting room, opened in 2016, offers a lively atmosphere with live music, wine cocktails, and charcuterie (13:13-14:22). Crystalyn emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming, fun experience for visitors and wine club members, offering customizable memberships and personal touches like follow-ups and curated shipments (17:00-24:41). She also teases plans to launch her own podcast to share inspiring stories and connect with others (24:42-25:35). The episode wraps up with details about Spicy Vines' unique "winning cork" promotion and upcoming events, including their harvest release party and annual "Taste of Pine Mountain" event (25:36-27:00). The hosts close by encouraging listeners to visit Spicy Vines and keep it spicy (29:33-30:05).       LINKS: Spicy Vines  The Gables Inn - the lodging property featured today Wine & Food Affair - tickets to on sale today Frick Winery - our last mystery "where am I winery"   Sponsor: River Road Family Vineyards and Winery Credits: The Wine Road podcast is mixed and mastered at

Under the proposed plan, consumers would pay 1 to 2 percent more for tasting room visits, wine club memberships within California, and every bottle purchased at a local winery. Supporters say the plan would provide much-needed collective marketing dollars to boost the industry, but many Sonoma County winery owners are not thrilled with the idea. Douglas Keane originally opened Cyrus in Healdsburg, California, earning two Michelin stars and many accolades. But during the pandemic, a burned-out Keene did not want to reopen it as a traditional fine dining restaurant with an upscale tasting menu. So he sat down and figured out how to change the business model and staffing model to provide a living wage for all his team members and a distinctive dining experience for guests. At the new Cyrus, located in the Sonoma County town of Geyserville, the evening is choreographed like a dinner party in someone's home, starting with drinks and bites in the Bubble Lounge, then proceeding into the kitchen where guests interact with the chefs over a first course, followed by a multi-course hyper-seasonal tasting menu in the dining room and ending with a sweet finish in the Chocolate Room. And every team member makes an annual salary of $75,000.

Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly columnI get it. Using words to describe what a wine tastes like is like dancing about architecture. But wine writers do it anyway, and wine readers read it anyway.Part of the reason: something is better than nothing. And, to be fair, the typical word salad does convey a rough idea of what to expect when you pull the cork or twist the Stelvin closure. Cherry, raspberry, plum for that bottle of red. Apple, citrus, lemon-lime for that bottle of dry white. The words may alert you about flavors or styles you want to avoid, or flavors or styles you enjoy or want to explore. But I expect another reason people read wine descriptions is the writer's attempt to be witty, clever, entertaining. Examples:• For a dry, zero residual sugar wine: “So dry it endangers the water level in swimming pools.”• For a tannic red built for aging: “So much structure you may have to pay property taxes.”• For a sauv blanc: “Aromas of gooseberry and honeydew, with a whiff of your neighbor mowing his front lawn.”• For a cool-climate riesling: “The aroma of petrol is a sign of quality, trust me on this. Give it some time to breath and it will be like that diesel truck was never there.”• For sweet dessert wine: “So sweet diabetics best consult their physician before sipping.”• For a low quality, high alcohol wine: “Bottle should be concealed in stained brown paper bag and wine consumed under a highway overpass.”• For over-the-top butter, oak, and alcohol chard: “So big and voluptuous it makes Marilyn Monroe look like the poor little match girl.”• For poor quality merlot: “Gives deep insight into the movie Sideways.”• For extremely refined, expensive Premier Grand Cru Bordeaux: “So elegant and sophisticated it makes Maurice Chevalier look like one of the Three Stooges.”• For delicious riesling: “Creates an unusual yearning to wear lederhosen.”• For over-oaked wine: “Tastes like liquid trees.”• For especially delicious wine: “A foretaste of your experience at the wine bar in heaven.”• For bottom-shelf supermarket wine: “Perfect if you crave the lowest common denominator.”• For low-end boxed wine: “Your credit card will love you at check out. Your head, not so much tomorrow morning.”• For full-bodied red wine: “Easily could compete in a Mr. Universe contest.”• For very high acidity wine: “Enough acidity to clean hard water stains.”• For quality rosé: “Good first date wine, assuming you desire a second date.”Tasting notes• Domaine Bousquet Unoaked Chardonnay, Tupungato Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina 2023: Clean, bright expression of high altitude Argentine chardonnay made by trailblazer in organic, biodynamic, and regenerative agriculture. $13 Link to my review• Château Maris La Touge 2019: Straightforward crowd pleaser; affable tannins and acidity allow ripe, flavorful fruits to lead the silky parade on your palate. Excellent integration of darker fruit elements without intrusion of oak. $20-23 Link to my review• Early Mountain Vineyards Novum, Virginia 2022: Lively, tasty unusual dark fruit blend of Virginia grapes—cab franc, merlot, and tannat. A must-try wine both as a blend you seldom encounter and as an excellent example of a Virginia wine. $60 Link to my review• Aperture Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County 2019: Amazingly approachable with silky tannins and mouthfeel. Rich dark fruit flavors. Round, polished. $70 Link to my reviewLast roundIn the corn (maize) maze, I felt like I was being stalked. It was eerie, but—shucks—I didn't have a kernel of an idea what to do, so I just played it by ear. Wine time. This is a reader-supported publication. Imagine owning a vineyard that is considered one of the very best in the U.S. How would you feel if it were chosen as one of the Top 30 vineyards in the world!? Within the last year, that remarkable honor was bestowed upon Hirsch Vineyards. Perched high above the Sonoma Coast, Hirsch is defined by extremes - high elevations, steep hillsides, nearly 80 inches of rain each year, intense sunshine, and wind-driven storms. The nearby San Andreas fault has fractured the land into a composite of rock, sand, and soil, producing wines of extraordinary character. More than 60 individually farmed blocks of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir each tell their own story, and range from wines that are powerful to delicately elegant. Winemaker Jasmine Hirsch, the daughter of founder David Hirsch, has grown up on the property and has a lifelong understanding of its land and potential. Yes, there is a swimming pool off the guest house at the winery. It was a beautiful fall morning, and to have a Korbel mimosa in hand was a bonus! Korbel Champagne Cellars has a multi-layered history full of drama and perseverance. We touch upon Gary's life on the property and how the Korbel brothers eventually created California "champagne" in 1882. Send us a textLooking for a wine that punches well above its price tag? The Compass Bridge Sonoma Pinot Noir from Trader Joe's might be your new favorite affordable discovery. This limited-edition $9.99 Pinot Noir comes from the powerhouse Delicato Family Vineyards, which recently acquired Coppola's Sonoma operations. Between these two wine giants, they've mastered the art of creating value-priced wines that deliver genuine quality without the premium price tag. What impressed me most about this Compass Bridge Pinot Noir is how it maintains authentic varietal character. At 14.5% alcohol, it could easily become overwhelming, yet it remains beautifully balanced with a medium-to-light body that Pinot lovers will appreciate. The flavor profile offers black cherry, raspberry, subtle herbs, and even hints of Dr. Pepper complexity, all with that characteristic Pinot Noir "funk" that might seem strange at first but quickly becomes addictive. While not as complex as premium Sonoma Pinots costing three or four times as much, this wine delivers surprising length, with flavors that linger pleasantly on the palate. It's part of a limited Trader Joe's collection that includes a $7.99 Chardonnay and $9.99 Cabernet Sauvignon, all from Sonoma County. If you enjoy discovering hidden gems and wines that overdeliver for their price, grab a bottle (or several) while you can. As with many Trader Joe's special wine finds, once this limited edition sells out, it's gone for good. Uncork a bottle tonight and experience how satisfying affordable wine can truly be!Check us out at www.cheapwinefinder.comor email us at podcast@cheapwinefinder.com

Darryl Miller from Dehlinger Winery is back on California Wine Country today with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. He has been on the show before, the last time was this episode, last summer. This is the 50th anniversary of Dehlinger Winery. Darryl has known the family for forty years. Tom Dehlinger was a biochemist and got the wine bug. He studied wine at Davis and worked with some local wineries. Then, bought a property on the corner of Vine Hill Road and Guerneville Road in 1972. He and his brother built an octagonal house in the middle of the property which is iconic. They crushed their first grapes in 1975. Dan Berger started writing about wine at that time and tasted his first Dehlinger wines in 1979. They were among the first to plant grapes in the area which would later become Pinot Noir and Chardoheaven. The other local pioneers were the Rocchioli and Martinelli vineyards, not far from there. The vineyard is a rolling hill property with two types of soil, Altamont, a red iron based clay, and Goldridge, a gray sandy loam. The sections of the vineyard with different soils produce different results in the wine. This is why they produce some wines from each section and soil type. Bahl Fratty Riesling The 40th Winesong Weekend Celebration is Sept. 5-6, 2025. Click the Winesong 40th logo for details. Dan Berger has brought a bottle of his Bahl Fratty Riesling It is a 2023 that just got a Gold Medal at the American Fine Wine Competition in Miami. The grapes are from Cole Ranch in Mendocino County, near Booneville. Bahl Fratty means Good Drink in Boontling, the local lingo. Dan's goal was to make the wine as dry as possible. The 2022 was also a gold medal winner. Darryl went to college in Humbolt State then moved to Seattle and worked as a waiter. He met someone who suggested he could sell wine and he did end up selling a lot of wine. The business took him to San Francisco, Hawaii and Tahoe. Eventually he ended up in Sonoma County, the same year as Dan, in 1981. He started his own company as a broker and sold some very famous wines like Taft Street, Davis Bynum and Iron Horse. Then in 1995 he sold his company to the Henry Wine Group and continued to work with them. Darryl is one of the judges at Dan Berger's annual wine competition. There are different ways to know good wine but what's really important is what you like. -Darryl Miller California Wine Country is brought to you by Rodney Strong Vineyards and Davis Bynum Wines. Dehlinger makes about 8,000 cases of wine per year, but they grow enough grapes for 40,000. Many famous wineries get grapes from them, whose names are not to be made public. The rest of the show is the tasting of the wines Darryl has brought. First  is the 2021 Goldridge Pinot Noir. Round, rich and juicy, Dan says silky with a crisp finish. The next one is also a Pinot Noir, from the Altamont soil section, that has more structure because it also gets some whole cluster fermentation. Darryl calls the Altamont tighter, stronger with more minerality. Visit the website for details.

Despite being the son of a pharmacist turned wine professional, I did not know the purpose of an Entheogen. Ross Halleck set me straight,so much so, that after defining an entheogen, the value of the consumption of wine became clearer. Ross Halleck doesn't just make wine—he might just ask you to close your eyes and seek the divine within a single glass. In this episode of Wine Talks, you'll be swept past the typical vineyard tales and deep into the spiritual and mystical roots of wine itself. You'll learn how Ross stumbled into the wine trade not through family legacy or grand ambition, but with the curiosity of a seeker and a penchant for unearthing life's mysteries. Paul and Ross unravel why, for some, wine is more than a social lubricant or status symbol; it's an “entheogen”—a conduit to something sacred. Discover how the trappings of wine culture, from magazine scores to over-intellectualization, can miss the magic entirely, and why Ross is on a mission to return wine to its ancient role: bringing people together, not driving them apart. You'll step inside his West Sebastopol vineyard and hear why he believes winning top awards means little if you can't connect with people's hearts. The conversation flows from digital reviews and the democratization of taste, to the pitfalls of marketing wine as pure commerce, to modern-day plant medicine ceremonies designed to foster self-discovery, belonging, and reverence. As the layers peel back, you'll come away with a fresh perspective on wine—not just as a beverage, but as a timeless link to the sacred, the mysterious, and the collective human story. And if you've ever wondered why a certain glass makes you feel something inexplicable, or why wine alone among drinks is revered across cultures and epochs, this episode offers more than an explanation—it offers an invitation to experience the “vine intervention” for yourself. The Kirkland Signature Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 from Costco breaks all the rules of wine pricing, offering genuine Sonoma County quality at a jaw-dropping $6.99.What makes this bottle truly special is its refusal to compromise on classic Cabernet character despite its budget price. Unlike many value-priced wines that strip away tannins fearing consumer rejection, this Kirkland gem embraces a gentle tannic structure that provides authentic Cabernet backbone. The flavor profile dazzles with blackberry, raspberry, plum, and cranberry notes, enhanced by subtle herbs, spice, and a touch of licorice that adds remarkable depth. Perhaps most surprisingly, it features French oak influence rather than the cheaper American oak typically found at this price point, delivering more refined, spicy complexity.Behind this exceptional value is Precept Wines, the Northwest's largest independently owned wine company and masters of crafting affordable quality for retailers like Trader Joe's, Aldi, and Costco. On this episode of Beats Vines & Life, host MJ Towler sits down with Alex Kanzler and Zach Stickler, the dynamic duo behind Kanzler Vineyards in the Sebastopol Hills of Sonoma County. Their story is one of serendipity, hard work, and a deep connection to both land and family—think accidental farmers turned boutique winemakers, whose grapes have made their way into cult Pinot Noirs and acclaimed bottles from top California producers. We journey from the wild days of pulling up old apple orchards and setting them ablaze to crafting expressive, balanced Pinots and Chardonnays with a nod to tradition and a spark of innovation. Along the way, Alex and Zach open up about family roots, their paths from restaurants, real estate, and snowboarding—yes, you read that right—to building a close-knit, collaborative team at Kanzler. They share insights on winegrowing as a skill trade, the changing scene in Sonoma, the tightrope of navigating vintage variation, and the passion that goes into every bottle. This episode is a celebration of community, legacy, hard-earned expertise, and the pure joy of sharing a bottle—whether it's from your own vineyard, your neighbor's, or popped open at a lively family garden party. Gary Brooks doesn't just make wine—he turns the whole idea of winemaking on its head and brings it back down to earth, reminding us that, after all, it's just “rotting fruit.” But don't be fooled by the humility. In this episode of Wine Talks, you'll discover how a man raised in Annapolis, guided by a career that veered from the Navy to IT management, ended up chasing Pinot Noir dreams in California's Petaluma Gap. As Paul Kalemkiarian digs in, you'll learn how Gary navigated the split between wine academia and hands-on “cellar rat” labor, why starting Brooks Note Winery took more grit and capital than sanity, and what it's like to pour your soul—and your bottles—out of the back of your truck just to make ends meet. Gary shares candid stories about the hard business realities behind artisan winemaking, how texture and mouthfeel outshine flavor notes in the true art of blending, and why he thinks the grandest moments in wine come down to honest connections, not pedigreed grapes. You'll come away with a new appreciation for the world of small-batch winemakers—their struggles to sell every bottle DTC, the tactical parties in living rooms far from California, and the ever-present quest to avoid pretentiousness in a trade often accused of it. Above all, you'll grasp why a genuinely great wine experience is often about memory, friendship, and the joy of pure discovery, not just what's in the glass. ✅ Wine: Just rotting fruit… or the ultimate art form? ✅ Hear Garry Brooks and host Paul Kalemkiarian tear down wine's pretensions while sharing the REAL journey from the cellar to your glass. ✅ On this episode of Wine Talks, dive into stories of risk, resilience, and why Pinot Noir is the grape that changed everything for Brooks Note Winery. ✅ You'll never look at a bottle the same way again—tune in and discover why wine's magic goes way beyond what's in your glass.   #WineTalksPodcast #BrooksNoteWinery #PetalumaGap #WinemakingJourney #PinotNoirLove #WineLessPretentious #DTCSuccess #WineAndStory
