Backup Power: This portable battery backup is a quiet and easy solution for summer power outages.   Q & A: Brick Steps: How can Mia remove carpet that's glued onto brick steps? She'll need an adhesive remover to soften and scrape off the glue and we suggest applying thin pavers or exterior ceramic tiles on top of the steps. Chimney Repair: Moisture is getting into a chimney that's losing stucco. Anthony should remove any loose stucco and use a repair product that will adhere to concrete and brick. Countertops: Jason's renovating his kitchen and needs inexpensive options for his countertops. We've got info on durable DIY products that can create the look of stone countertops. Foundation: There are cracks in the concrete slab and the kitchen is starting to dip. Rochelle should hire a structural engineer to determine how to make the best repairs. Carpenter Bees: Carpenter bees have invaded Kevin's porch and fence! He needs a pest control professional and should replace the wood with PVC materials. Flooring Polish: Is French polish a good option for refinishing hardwood floors? Theresa learns that it's a beautiful finish but not very durable for a busy household. Efficient Windows: How energy-efficient are low-E windows? We confirm that low-E glass coating will reflect the sun's UV rays and make a big difference in Bruce's energy bills. Rust Stains: Metal railings have left rust stains on Tamra's pavers. We recommend using natural acid products like lemon juice or vinegar or certain chemical products. Musty Odors: Bryan's crawlspace gets a musty odor in the summer when he's away. He's not only one of the most universally respected members of the UK service design community, but also a fantastic storyteller, as evidence by the podcast which flows between the Aristotelian version of love and Taylor's version (yes, that Taylor).  We talk about  the relationships between love, trust and a healthy bottom line and how more companies need to take the value of  “customer love”, ubiquitous in mission statements, and bake these into customer journeys.Clive's new project , Project Love,   considers how designers can design with love and design to foster the conditions that promote love between human beings.  And this could not have come at a better time.   For a world that's seemingly obsessed with "Love Island", the daily news  indicates that love is definitely not all around at the moment. The design relates to the industrial buildings from the precinct. While it makes a departure with a modern facade of tiles, galvanized sheeting, steel frame windows and dynamic forms of curling and curving brick. Structurally, a large portion of the building feels industrial with precast concrete slabs, structural brick roof vaults and steel. Environmentally. The naturally lit and ventilated studio collects its own water and generates its own power, creating a carbon neutral building. In addition, large full length clear story windows enable natural light to enter the single industrial scale workspace. The Sawtooth roof trusses and a portion of the facades were retained with the exception of the offices on the western street frontage. That's where a narrow, highly designed apartment runs atop the length of the building. The apartment features four self-supporting offset brick, cat and airy vaults that allow light into the apartment.

When pivoting, it's easy to second guess yourself or make excuses why you shouldn't do something. Karin Taylor, founder of Mandalay Farms, shares how to keep moving forward without knowing what's to come. South Florida's Karin Taylor does it all. She's a single mother of five, just launched a series of podcasts and is founder and owner of Mandalay Farms, a private oasis where you can connect and interact with a variety of animal ambassadors. The 20-acre property in Jupiter Farms, Florida is home to a Noah's Ark like menagerie of over 70 domesticated and exotic animals including horses, donkeys, pigs, kangaroos, goats, emus, otters, a variety of birds, lemurs, porcupines, and an assortment of reptiles. Taylor worked as a model and actress. She got her start as a dancer at Walt Disney World in the Electric Light Parade and launched her modeling career at the age of 18 when she was discovered by the Ford Modeling Agency in Miami Beach. Her career really took off after she posed as June's Playboy Playmate in 1996, an experience she describes as positive, respectful, and a place she found lifelong friendships. After Playboy, Karin went on to land guest starring roles on “Baywatch” and “Malcolm & Eddie”. She guest hosted for E! Entertainment Television, appeared on HGTV's “Smart Design,” and in Horace Brown's music video for the song “Things We Do for Love.” Taylor discovered the healing power of animals after the loss of her daughter, Hunter, to Trisomy 13. A few years later, she purchased the 20-acre property, now known as Mandalay Farms, to mark a new chapter in her life and connect with her children through horses. It was the tranquility of the farm and healing power of the horses that inspired her to learn more about equine therapy. That lead to her being certified in Equine Assisted Learning (EAL). She also founded the nonprofit Mandalay Farms Zoological Society to serve at-risk youth, children in foster care, and individuals with special needs through science-based animal interventions.' Taylor is now also taking on yet another venture with the launch of several podcasts. Her goal is empowering women who are on their own individual journeys. Some of her first guests included former Playboy Playmate Ulrika Ericsson and second wife of former President Donald Trump Marla Maples – both women who shared their own journeys of life's transitions. For more information on Mandalay Farms, please visit MandalayFarms.com and follow them on Instagram @mandalayfarms and Facebook @MandalayFarms where Taylor frequently posts news about happenings at the farm, as well as animal photos and videos.

On this episode of Raising Your Antenna, our host, Keith Zakheim and guest, Miguel Gamiño, Jr. will discuss the role public-private partnerships play in making communities more sustainable and equitable in light of the recent passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.Miguel Gamiño, Jr. has spent his career leveraging technology to solve large-scale challenges in both the public and private sectors. This extends from his time at Mastercard as the EVP of Enterprise Partnerships and the Head of Global Cities and City Possible, to serving the public as the Chief Technology Officer of New York City, Chief Information and Innovation Officer of El Paso, Texas, and Chief Information Officer and Executive Director of the Department of Technology for the City and County of San Francisco. Now, Miguel is the Chief Experience Officer and Founding Partner of Simplicity, an app that takes an entire city (residents, management, police, groups, and more) and unites it. The app allows citizens to get factual and trustworthy information from their local government right from their phones. From an initial seed investment in August 2021, the company now has 50 cities using Simplicity across the United States. Join the discussion with Miguel Gamiño, Jr. where we'll cover:Redefining public-private partnerships in the Age of Climate Tech AdoptionUrban connectivity through technology & innovationThe ways in which the Inflation Reduction Act can lead to more equitable citiesSit back–maybe take notes–and enjoy as we bring you the second episode of our 6-part series, “The Inflation Reduction Act in the Age of Climate Tech Adoption” on Raising Your Antenna: “A New Era of Public-Private Partnerships under the IRA.”Subscribe to Raising Your Antenna to listen to the full series and if you're interested in more content relating to climate tech, urban planning, smart cities and more, subscribe to our newsletter.

This is part 2 of my conversation with Marla Foreman. Marla Foreman is a veterinarian, a horse trainer and a riding instructor. She's also a good friend so it was fun for us to get together for a Horses for Future podcast. I particularly wanted to interview Marla because she grew up on a ranch in New Mexico. From there she moved to Washington state, but not to the temperate coastal area. She lived on the other side of the state where rain was scarce and the amount of land she had was a mere postage stamp compared to the acreage she grew up on in New Mexico. And now she's living on the east coast near Boston. So she's learned how to manage horses in very different climates, and very different acreage. What she has learned is smart design. The goal is healthy horses and healthy pastures. Growing up in New Mexico she saw how well horses maintained themselves when they could move. How to you encourage movement on smaller acreage? And how do you design your farm so you are spending your time enjoying your horses and not just doing chores? The answer is smart design. Hopefully, you'll get some ideas for your own farm so you can meet everyone's needs well - yours, the horses, and the land you care for. Horse people can make a difference in the climate change crisis. Together we're learning how.

In the traditional R&D process, the product is developed and then handed off to the design team to “wrap” it and make it look pretty.    The drawback is that this approach is out of date; in the last ten years consumers have become much more design-savvy.    Consumers want functional, usable design that highlights ease of use, or a more emotive design that adds a personal connection with the product or in some way broadcasts a statement about the user’s more subtle, hard-to-define beliefs about themselves.    We can all name a handful of companies that are melding form and function in a way that resonates with users and creates a deep-seated brand loyalty.    Look at JetBlue.    They are essentially a low-cost carrier, but their design does a masterful job of suggesting that they provide a full-service experience.    Their terminal at JFK is a flashback to the old-world style of travel—more elegant and sophisticated than its customers would expect it to be, and more pleasant to spend time in compared with the terminals of most of its competitors, the so-called legacy carriers.       It’s important to constantly ask why you develop your product elements in a particular order.    This is especially true if your organization has been in business for a substantial length of time and yet you’re still developing your products in an order that was devised to suit production methods from decades ago.    Ford Motor Company worked with Ideo and the New York–based design firm Smart Design on the Ford Fusion.    This was a daring move for Ford, as the car industry has always believed in keeping new ideas proprietary.    By bringing in outside firms they risked their design being leaked prematurely.    However, they recognized both that they needed to do something bold with the design to reflect the radically new nature of the car and that they didn’t know where to start.      Ford wanted a design that reflected the fact that the hybrid car was something “new.”   Part of this process was realizing that their potential customer base was made up of people with wildly divergent needs and wants.    There were the hard-core “hypermilers,” who kept spreadsheets detailing the performance they got out of every gallon of gas.    There were customers who were concerned about the environment but didn’t think much about it beyond making the decision to go hybrid.    And there were people who simply were looking to lower the amount they spent on gas but weren’t emotionally invested in the environmental aspect of the vehicle.    All of these groups wanted different levels of information and feedback from the dashboard array.    The hypermilers wanted to “keep score” of their gas mileage and monitor how the car was performing at different points during their driving experience.    The less environmentally focused customers wanted a simpler, less distracting display.    The only thing all the potential customers agreed on was that there needed to be an easy-to-find clock display  somewhere on the dash.    So, rather than developing the dashboard last to meet the specs of the car (as it is typically done), the design team reversed the process and started working on the dash long before they even had the car itself designed.    They started off interviewing hundreds of potential customers but quickly realized that no one design was going to make everybody happy.    After multiple rounds of testing they developed a dash that allowed the driver to pick one of four settings that determined what appeared on the display.    Once this concept was finalized, it was sent to the engineers to incorporate into the overall specs of the vehicle.    By reversing the order in which their process was normally done (here’s the car, now figure out how the dashboard works within it), the combined team of Ford, Ideo, and Smart Design were able to come up with a unique experience that reflected the environmental philosophy of the car and give users a customizable experience that was much more likely to please the individuals who purchased the vehicle.         [Sparking Points]  In what order do you develop an idea and its components?   What would happen if you changed that?  How did you make the determination about your customers’ priorities in regards to how you ordered the phases of R&D?  When do you involve design in the R&D? What would be the impact if you change it?

Max Burton on what we can learn from Nike and Disney's approach to design

The O’Reilly Design Podcast: The future of wearables, hiring designers, and understanding the value of design. In this week’s Design Podcast, I sit down with Max Burton, founder of Matter. Before starting his own firm, Burton spent the last two decades at places like Frog, Nike, and Smart Design. We talk about the future of wearables, what he looks for when hiring designers, and what tech companies can learn from Nike’s and Disney's approach to product design. Here are a few highlights from our conversation: Design at Nike and what tech can learn from their approach When I was at Nike, the designers were instrumental in defining what products they were going to work on. We actually would write the briefs to our own products, and it was the designers who often came up with some of the most innovative products and product ideas. It didn't come from a separate marketing group, it didn't come from a strategy group, it often came from the designers. The executives at Nike understood and valued design and allowed the designers that level of autonomy and control. I've worked with a lot of tech companies, and they tend to be either run by or founded by engineers. I love working with engineers. They're incredibly inventive, they know how things work, and they can put things together in meaningful ways. They're often very obsessed in their area, and that's not exactly what the end user might want. I think what designers do is they really think about the end user, they have that level of empathy. Also, companies like Nike are brand driven, design driven, and the focus is much more on the user. It's also the aspirational user—it's the emotional side of a product experience, not just the functional side. I think that probably is the emphasis—that design or design-led companies understand the human, the emotional side, the artful side, and that that has an important value. That people who buy products at the end of day, these products have to fit into their lives, they have to be something they want, something they want in their home or to wear on their bodies. The emotional side has to be recognized, and perhaps a lot of the tech companies are still a little bit engineering-led. The future of wearables: Disney I worked on the new My Magic Plus for Disney, which is basically making the park into a smart park. Part of that solution was a wearable that connected to the park. The great thing about this product is that it was actually a really, really simple product. It had no display on it. It's a band you wear, but it's connected to the park, so it's connected to a series of sensors in the environment that enable certain things like entry into the park or payment for merchandise or food, or entry into your hotel door without a key, or access onto a ride without having to wait in line. A lot of these developments in wearables requires an environment that's networked and smart. I see that this is a very exciting new path for wearables, where it's not about just you and the wearable; it's about you, the wearable, and the environment you're in. The work that was done at Disney is kind of indicative of where the future might go. For example, you can imagine in the future that a city like San Francisco could have a similar kind of network of sensors and at that the wearable could connect with the city, or you as a person in that city could connect with that city. I think that's a very likely future, and if someone thinks, "Well, that's crazy—cities like San Francisco are much more massive and complex than the park, the Disney park." Well, that's actually not even true because if you go to the Disney Park, they have more than 16 million guests a year; they have more than 100 restaurants in the park; they have complexity of all of the hotels and resorts that guests could stay in. It's almost equal to San Francisco, so I think it's very likely in future. T-shaped designers + storytelling IDEO define what they call the T-shaped designer—that's somebody with a deep expertise in one specific area, but a general knowledge of others. I look for that as well. If I'm taking on an industrial designer for example, I expect that they have an amazing skill and talent in their area of designing and making physical product. I also look for their ability now to understand the digital world, to understand interface, to understand experience design, and to be willing to think of their profession more broadly. In today's modern world, you need those kinds of broader thinking skills. That applies again for the interaction designers, that they must also be very skilled and adept at their profession, but at the same time, have an interest and passion for the physical world, and know how to work in the physical world as well. We still have to deliver, we still have to make products, so that depth of skill and knowledge in one's area of expertise is required. The ability to work with others is also paramount. The other thing that I'm emphasizing a lot now as well is that design is, in a way, moving toward filmmaking, if you like, because with experiences or service-based design, you're thinking about a consumer's experience over time and space. The best way to design with that level of complexity is by creating narratives and stories with characters, and I find this is a very good way to anchor the team or to provide the guiding power for the designers to work toward. If they can share the narrative, then they can each go off in their areas of expertise and create the outputs from that narrative. We always try to put some storytelling and a narrative into our project plans, and that might start in the beginning with defining our personas and characters. Then it's creating a journey map or a day in the life of a person; and then, throughout the UX track, we further that story and often we end the project with a short three-minute or five-minute film with live actors that basically explains how the product is used. That's a very good method of communicating a product idea that's physical and digital, and we've had a lot of success with that.
