We have talked about an anti-inflammatory diet's purpose on the podcast before, but I felt the need to circle back to it. Diets these days are not as popular, which is a good thing I'm my opinion. I am always quick to mention that the anti-inflammatory diet aims to change the way we view the word diet. It is less restrictive and focuses on eating whole foods at the core, simple enough right? In today's episode, I break down what this way of eating looks like, the benefits, and most importantly the ability to be flexible with it. Additionally, I share the book, The Inflammation Spectrum by Dr. Will Cole. This book offers a great way to identify some of your trigger foods when converting to a whole-food diet/lifestyle. Did you know that the gut and brain are connected? Maybe you've heard of the gut-brain axis, and that your diet impacts mental health, but did you know that significant amounts of serotonin and dopamine are made in the gut? To truly heal, it takes both a dietary and mental-health approach. Dr. Will Cole is an expert in functional medicine with a focus on thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalances, and digestive disorders. He is the author of several bestselling books, including The Inflammation Spectrum and Intuitive Fasting, and was one of the first doctors to embrace telehealth as a means of reaching more patients. In this episode, we talk about Dr. Cole's newest book, Gut Feelings, and the relationship between mental and physical health. We tend to separate the two, but they are actually intimately connected. “Shameflammation,” as Dr. Cole calls it, is the intersection between mental/emotional issues like stress and shame and how that impacts your physical body. He also explores what stress can do to your gut and how practices like meditation and breathwork can help regulate the nervous system. You'll learn how diet, chronic infections, and nutrient deficiencies impact why you feel the way that you do, specifically when it comes to brain fog, fatigue, and other mental-health concerns. And conversely, how stress, shame, trauma and other mental health issues impact your physical body. Your gut is the foundation of your entire health. Your microbiome directly relates to how you look, feel, and think. When your gut is out of balance and inflamed - it can trigger other issues like autoimmune conditions, heart disease, type 1 diabetes, skin conditions, weight gain, acid reflux, asthma, cancer, anxiety, depression, and more. The person who knows all about inflammation and specifically gut inflammation is Dr. Will Cole. He dives into how our emotional health directly relates to our gut health and the opposite, how the gut relates to our emotions. In his new book, “Gut Feelings: Healing The Shame-Fueled Relationship Between What You And How You Feel,” Dr. Cole illustrates how stress and shame can cause gut inflammation and sabotage your health in a process called shameflammation. Dr. Will Cole is a leading functional medicine expert who consults people around the world via webcam and locally in Pittsburgh, helping thousands to lose weight and regain vitality. When you look into just about every health problem that we face in the world today—anxiety, depression, fatigue, digestive problems, hormone imbalances, diabetes, heart disease, or autoimmune conditions—they are all inflammatory in nature or have an inflammatory component. But inflammation starts brewing in the body long before these diseases become noticeable, not to mention diagnosable. By the time a health problem is advanced enough to be officially diagnosed, inflammation has typically already caused significant damage to the body. In this week's mini-episode, Dhru sits down with Dr. Will Cole and Dr. Mark Hyman to talk about why inflammation plagues so many people and how to create awareness to address this issue. They also talk about how to design a personalized food and lifestyle plan to alleviate the effects of inflammation and optimize your health. Welcome to the Siim Land Podcast I’m your host Siim Land and today we talk with Dr Will Cole again. Will is one of the leading functional medicine doctors in the US. He has his medical practice and has written many books, such as the Inflammation Spectrum and Ketotarian. In this episode we’re going to talk about Will’s latest book Intuitive Fasting. This episode is brought to you by Kaatsu Training. Kaatsu Bands incorporate blood flow moderation training that trick the body into thinking it’s lifting heavier weights than it actually is. When traditional weightlifting requires you to reach 70-80% of your 1 repetition maximum to stimulate muscle hypertrophy, then Kaatsu bands achieve that effect only at 20-30%. So, it’s perfect for treating injuries or used when you don’t have access to heavier weights. Research about Kaatsu bands also shows it lowers blood pressure, speeds up recovery from injuries, releases stem cells, builds muscle, burns fat, and prevents age-related muscle loss. These things are amazing and I use them almost every day to recover from my heavier workouts. If you want to try out the Kaatsu bands, then use the code SIIM for a 10% discount at kaatsu-global.com. Welcome back to another special episode – this time welcoming my extraordinary guest and friend, the best-selling author of “Ketotarian,” “The Inflammation Spectrum,” and “Intuitive Fasting,” and the host of the new podcast: The Art of Being Well, Dr. Will Cole. In today's episode, we're joining forces to share and discuss his thoughts about the backlash he suffered against his book, Intuitive Fasting, and how he dealt with the criticism and harsh words he faced on social media. Through the story of what happened, I talk to Dr. Cole about what he has learned from the experience, and how we can deal with criticism and taking accountability versus accepting shame, or shaming, as any form of legitimate means for creating change. Tune in as Dr. Cole speaks about the importance of compassion and acceptance and for his top tips to staying “in the arena” and delivering your best work and honest message - no matter what. In This Episode: [05:25] Dr. Cole talks about the backlash he received from his book, “Intuitive Fasting,” and how he achieved a place of real peace with and through the ordeal. [08:15] Learn about what Intuitive Fasting is, why it’s not restrictive, and how it can inspire you to listen to your body. [12:20] Listen to the story of how Dr. Cole came to thank the people that tried to silence him because it just made his presence more firm and his reach farther-reaching. [18:15] Dr. Cole and I help you deconstruct how you can choose which feedback to take and which feedback not to take. [24:15] Why you need to be flexing your mindfulness muscles every single day, and a few excellent ways to do so. Key Takeaways: Root yourself in your intention. To rise above criticism, stay mindful and be gentle with yourself by recognizing if your intention was not to harm and was truly earnest. Shame feels like rejection. Social media shame feels like the possibility of collective rejection. You have to learn to identify this feeling and stop it in its tracks. To do so, first: go inward and realize that nothing crazy is going on. That way, you can recognize that you will be okay and work through the details from a calm place. Rely on a squad of people who have been in your shoes and can lend you a much greater perspective. Find the perspective of gratitude to ground yourself. Appreciation is like empathy: it dissolves the stinging effect of shame.

Dr. Will Cole discusses his telehealth practice model and explains how it has lead to stable, predictable growth in his business. Hear insights about: Dr. Cole's journey to becoming one of the top 50 functional medicine and integrative doctors in the nation How the pandemic has impacted Dr. Cole's practice, and what he has done to adapt Why Dr. Cole chose to follow a telehealth practice model instead of brick and mortar How Dr. Cole has had success with telehealth from both systems and sales/marketing perspective What to expect from Dr. Cole's upcoming book, “Intuitive Fasting” The concepts of metabolic and fasting flexibility The underlying mechanisms Dr. Cole works on with most patients in his practice How Dr. Cole moves his patients into a position where they can sustain treatment and manage their own condition Incorporating Telemedicine into Your FM Practice Named one of the top 50 functional-medicine and integrative doctors in the nation, Dr. Cole specializes in clinically investigating underlying factors of chronic disease and customizing a functional medicine approach for thyroid issues, autoimmune conditions, hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, and brain problems. He is also the bestselling author of “Ketotarian,” “The Inflammation Spectrum,” and the upcoming book “Intuitive Fasting.” In this episode of The FM Shift, Dr. Cole joins us to share his story and talk about his telehealth practice model, and how it has enabled him to thrive during the pandemic. He also explains what you can do to successfully integrate telemedicine into your own practice. Operating a Telehealth Practice During the Pandemic By the time COVID reached its peak, Dr. Cole's practice was already conducting 90-95% of its consultations virtually. Some patients would fly or drive in for their first visit but after that, everything was carried out online. Since he chose to follow a telehealth practice model instead of building an operation that was predominantly reliant on brick and mortar services, the pandemic had a minimal effect on his business. Telehealth is how he is serving people now, and it's how he has always served people. This model offers tons of versatility and flexibility and it is something that we all need to adopt moving forward. A Pathway to Stability and Growth Dr. Cole did not anticipate a pandemic by any means, but the model he set up was able to bend and meld itself to withstand the extreme economic and regulatory conditions that are still in effect to this day. His telehealth practice has maintained healthy business growth, revenue streams, and patient enrollment in spite of everything that has taken place. If anything, the pandemic has provided an opportunity for potential functional medicine patients to take care of treatment-related tasks they have been putting off. Whether you implement a hybrid model or go all in, telehealth offers a pathway to stability and growth that many practices so desperately need right now. Leveraging Functional Medicine as a tool for healthier and happier living. Welcome back to the show everyone, today's guest is someone that I've been wanting to talk to for quite a while now. Given my passion into the holistic approaches towards health and wellness, Dr. Will Cole is undoubtedly one of the most experienced and educated individuals in the field of Nutrition and Functional Medicine. Dr. Will Cole, is a leading functional medicine expert, who specializes in clinically investigating the underlying factors of chronic disease and customizing health programs for thyroid issues, autoimmune conditions, hormonal dysfunctions, digestive disorders and brain problems. Distinctive from modern medicine's style of the sick-care approach where there's an emphasis on treating the symptoms, Dr. Will Cole, as a functional medic, takes a more health-care approach and provides his patients with advice and treatment after diagnosing the root problem based on their unique biological make up. Functional Medicine - Common causes of inflammation and what you can do to minimize it. You can't talk about metabolic, autoimmune and mental issues without bringing in the underlying factor that is chronic inflammation. What drives inflammation in one person is different from what drives inflammation in another person. Thus, inflammation is a commonality, and not a causation. In his latest book The Inflammation Spectrum, Dr. Will Cole , through his extensive research and experience, takes a deeper dive into how we can naturally balance our immune system. He suggests that we can mitigate and calm inflammation by reducing our intake of the four core causes of inflammation. These include; Grains Dairy Sugar Industrial seed oils Alongside the four major causes, there are also four other sub-categories which include; Nuts and seeds Legumes Eggs Nightshades Other common non-food causes of inflammation include; Stress Lack of enough sleep Social isolation Increased screen time Social media What goes on in your gastric system is also a big contributor to how imbalanced or balanced your body is. Viral infections, heavy metal toxicity and lymes are some of the most common causes of inflammation in your gut. So what does Dr. Will Cole suggest we do to reduce inflammation? The biggest step we can take is to minimize or completely eradicate our intake of the four core causes of inflammation. This alongside, increasing our input of healthy fats such as avocados, extra virgin oil, coconuts and pasteurized eggs is a sure way of reducing our chances of getting inflammation. There's no denying the link between our mind, body and wellness. At the end of the day, what really counts is our head space. Renegotiating the relationship with ourselves, the present moment we live in and what we want from life contributes a big part to our mental well being. Dr. Will Cole also suggests that activities that calm our mind and increase our self awareness such as meditation, nature time and self reflection are some of the daily practices we should learn to make a habit out of. We ought to use self care as a form of self-respect. Love and respect yourself enough to eat and engage in activities that are only good for you. The light and grace that we receive after realizing our true value and strength is the genesis of sustainable wellness. Love yourself enough to settle for nothing less than what improves your mental and physical well being.
