I met Edward Rinehart at my Rotary Club, where he was sharing his journey with DECA - Distributive Education Clubs of America - an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management through educational programs and competitions. Colorado had 9,000 participants in DECA programs in 2024, with the top competitors advancing through District Competitions to State and International. Edward has been involved in DECA all four years of his high school journey, made it all the way to International his Freshman year, and has served on the Leadership Team ever since. He won the State Competition in Entrepreneurship this February - and we're wishing him luck at Internationals in May! This is a different journey than most of our LoCo Experience episodes - just getting started. But I learned a lot, and enjoyed a wonderful conversation - and you will too! So especially if you've got kiddos still in school, or grandkids going to high school soon - or if you might want to be a volunteer judge for the District or State competitions - I hope you'll tune in and enjoy my conversation with Edward Rinehart. Zvonimir Durcevic: From Command to Collaboration, An Agile Leadership Team's Transformation Story Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. In this episode, Zvonimir discusses his experience supporting a leadership team transitioning from a traditional command-and-control management style to a more collaborative approach involving people in change decisions. Drawing from EDGE Theory of Change (based on Arnold Mendel's work) and Organization and Relationship Systems Coaching (ORSC) training, Zvone helped the leadership team understand what awaited them on the "other side" of this transformation. Through multiple half-day coaching sessions, he guided them in defining their new leadership identity and developing self-reflection skills. A critical element of this work was creating a conflict protocol that allowed leaders to discuss different perspectives constructively. Zvone emphasizes the importance of helping teams create a "third identity" – a new collective self that emerges through transformation. Self-reflection Question: What elements of your current leadership identity would you need to let go of to embrace a more collaborative approach to change? [Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

The need is as great as ever, but in spite of all of this, the Church is growing better than ever.

In this episode, I break down a simple but powerful framework called the Leadership Performance Matrix™—a tool I use to help nonprofit leaders pinpoint exactly why someone is underperforming and what to do about it.Instead of jumping to conclusions about someone's motivation or competency, I walk you through how to diagnose the real root of the problem—whether it's about clarity, motivation, or ability. Avoiding accountability creates chaos, misalignment, and inefficiencies that impact every part of your business. If leaders aren't holding each other accountable, you'll see wasted resources, declining morale, and reduced profitability. Let's dive into why accountability matters and how to fix it.Kodak: A Leadership Failure (00:02:03)Kodak invented the first digital camera in the 1970s but failed to act. Leadership avoided tough decisions, fearing disruption to their film business. While they stalled, competitors advanced, and Kodak eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2012—not due to technology, but due to poor accountability and leadership.Lack of Alignment Creates Chaos (00:03:37)Misaligned leadership leads to confusion and inefficiency. When leaders push different priorities without accountability, resources scatter instead of focusing on a common goal, ultimately hurting productivity and team morale.Unspoken Issues Breed Toxicity (00:08:31)Ignoring problems creates resentment and disengagement. If leaders fail to address accountability issues, passive-aggressiveness spreads, morale drops, and trust erodes. Tackle problems early to prevent toxicity.Productivity and Profits Decline (00:13:13)A lack of accountability increases inefficiencies, poor decisions, and wasted resources. When leaders aren't held accountable, disengagement spreads, stalling business growth and profitability. How to Build a Culture of Accountability (00:14:55)Set Clear Expectations – Define responsibilities and metrics.Regular Check-Ins – Keep accountability a priority in meetings.Address Issues Early – Tackle problems before they escalate.Lead by Example – Model accountability to create ownership.Establish Consequences & Rewards – Recognize accountability and correct resistance.Final Thoughts (00:26:55)Avoiding accountability weakens leadership and hurts your business. Aligning your team fosters better communication, stronger morale, and higher profits.Need help implementing accountability?
