We're winding out our theme of dystopian futures in movies and we absolutely have to go back in time, once again, and try to prevent catastrophe. The Terminator is back and this time? He's your new dad and he's been sent back in time by your 45 year old self. Devastation may have been delayed but still imminent. There's hope still in keeping John Connor alive to destroy Skynet tomorrow. The resistance hacked an Arnold bot and sent it back but Skynet sent a Liquid Metal prototype back too and he's scary as fuck. A defining film for a generation, an exceptional action movie and a rare sequel that is better than the original. Of course we're talking about “TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY” from 1991 directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick, Edward Furlong and Joe Morton. With the help of his pet Terminator, John Connor and his mother can prevent the future and stop Skynet on the cusp of its creation so long as they can survive the relentless T-1000. There's always a few holes in any time travel story but we might enjoy this movie now even more than we did when we were kids. Jimmy knows what you want to see. With a background in fine art, most of Schmitt's career has been focused on design, with the CEO spending several years occupying the role of Chief Designer at Desktop Metal. During his tenure at Desktop, Schmitt's eyes were opened to the opportunities of metal additive manufacturing, as well as the remaining and challenges, some of which he's looking to address with this new venture. Earlier this year, Fluent Metal emerged from stealth with 5.5 million dollars of funding and the tease of an as-yet unlaunched single-step, drop on-demand liquid metal 3D printing process. We talk about all that and much more on this episode of the Additive Insight podcast, starting with Schmitt's learnings from his previous roles in AM.

The world needs to move to renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind. The problem with those is that they're intermittent. That's because the Sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow. What we need, then, are efficient ways of storing energy: efficient batteries. Currently lithium ion batteries are being used but there are issues around their cost, how long they last, and their safety.   Donald Sadoway Hope is on the horizon in the form of liquid metal batteries. At a recent event organised by the Newton Gateway to Mathematics in Cambridge we met Donald Sadoway who played a very important role in pioneering these batteries. In this podcast he talks to us what they are and why they are better, when they'll be commercially available, and why sometimes it's best to ignore the experts. To watch a talk given by Sadoway at the Newton Gateway event go to the Newton Gateway website. In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Laura Leay interviews Michael Dickey from North Carolina State University about his work manipulating liquid gallium. When submerged in an aqueous solution, liquid gallium will form a sphere. When fed by gravity through a thin nozzle that is surrounded by aqueous solution, it will instead flow into the shape of a wire. Passing an electrical current through the liquid metal wire means that a magnetic field is created, which means the wire can be shaped using external magnets, following the Lorentz force. This research was published in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (doi:10.1073/pnas.2117535119).

At 3dpbm, we have been following Xerox's venture in AM ever since the company decided to invest to develop a new liquid metal printing process, invented by a New York startup called Vader. After nearly 5 years, a system based on this unique technology, the ElemX, is ready to enter commercialization. Our guest for this episode, Arjun Tekalur is the Director of Engineering at Xerox and is the best person to help us understand how Xerox's liquid metal printing works and if we will ever be able to say, “Xerox me that metal part”. Arjun is an experienced researcher and skilled engineering professional with 15+ years of experience in manufacturing, corporate strategy, research and innovation, and higher education. At Xerox, he manages the team responsible for systems integration of ElemX 3D printers. In his career he has created high-performance teams focusing on digital design and rapid qualification; managed portfolio encompassing research and applied technologies in advanced manufacturing, digitization, material and process qualification; and developed strategy to innovate and monetize digitization (tech road map creation, identify key gaps, create workflows). Arjun is passionate about technology, innovation and digital transformation. He also holds an MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics from the University of Rhode Island.

Tali Rosman was responsible for a diverse amount of roles worldwide, including at Stratasys and the Israeli Air Force, before landing a job at Xerox. Her task, to lead Xerox's Elem Additive unit. The first job she has is to commercialise ElemX Xerox's drop-by-drop metal 3D printing technology. She tells us how she's going to do that, for what markets it is suited, and what applications she is targeting. No, this is no broad spectrum push or something targeting the usual suspects of aviation or orthopaedics; Tali is taking a tight zoom on the technology's strengths and focusing on aluminum and MRO. It's a fascinating look at an outlier go-to-market that could be a portend of more Xerox technologies to come.

It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CADILLAC CANCELS DEBUT OF ALL-ELECTRIC LYRIQ OVER COVID-19 CONCERNS "Cadillac  has cancelled the upcoming debut of the Lyriq, an all-electric mid-sized SUV designed to be an entry point into luxury brand’s new EV lineup, over concerns about the COVID-19 outbreak." reports TechCrunch: "GM’s luxury brand had planned to reveal the Lyriq on April 2 at an event in Los Angeles.  The Geneva International Motor Show was cancelled, as well as MWC in Barcelona and the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. The GM brand said in a statement that the event was being cancelled “out of an abundance of caution.”. The Lyriq is just one in a roster of electric vehicles that GM plans to bring to market in the next two years. The automaker revealed March 4 a sweeping plan to produce and sell EVs that hinges on a new electric architecture that will support a wide range of products across all of its brands, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC."   https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/09/cadillac-cancels-debut-of-all-electric-lyriq-over-covid-19-concerns/   MINI COOPER SE GETS 110-MILE EPA RATING "MINI just announced the final specifications for the MINI Cooper SE (aka MINI Electric), valid from March 2020. At the same time, the EPA released its range and energy consumption ratings." says InsideEVs; "We start with the EPA range rating, which is in line with previous estimates. The new specs released is energy consumption - slightly higher than in the case of BMW i3.        2020 MINI Cooper SE Hardtop 2 door EPA rating: range of 110 miles (177 km). It'll be revealed this Friday" says Car Throttle: " It’s quite the achievement to build an electric car that weighs so little, as even the dinky Skoda Citigo e iV weighs a little bit more than that. You can put that skinny figure down to extensive use of carbon fibre in the chassis. There’s not much in the way of power or performance details yet, but it should be able to get close to the Apex AP-1 model revealed last year. That car used a 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost engine out of the Focus ST and Mustang, and pushed out almost 400bhp for a 0-62mph time of just 2.5 seconds. With all the electric motor’s torque available instantly, we’d think that the electric AP-0 could match this figure. Prachi Patel of MRS Bulletin interviews Carmel Majidi of Carnegie Mellon University about utilizing atom transfer radical polymerization to create liquid metal–polymer hybrid materials with high stability, excellent dispersibility, and tunable mechanical and optical properties. Read the article in Nature Nanotechnology.TranscriptPATEL: Rubbers and plastics have snuck into hundreds of products we use every day. They have excellent mechanical properties for these applications. But they are terrible at transporting heat and electricity. That’s a problem if you are an engineer who’s trying to make soft robots or artificial skin, like Carmel Majidi of Carnegie Mellon University. He is trying to create new kinds of composites by tailoring the electrical and thermal properties of polymers. He and his colleagues recently found a way to do this by filling polymers with nanoscale droplets made of liquid metals. MAJIDI: And the liquid metal itself is an alloy of gallium and indium. These are two metals that are solid at room temperature but when you mix them together they form this eutectic this liquid that has certain nice properties. It’s important that they’re liquid because that allows the droplets to deform with the surrounding rubber as the rubber stretches. PATEL: Up until now, researchers have tried to make such composites by using mixers that are a bit like kitchen blenders. You essentially throw in the liquid metal alloy along with the molten rubber or plastic. The metal breaks into tiny droplets that disperse through the polymer. But Majidi worked with chemistry professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski to develop a new technique. They first break up the liquid metal into nanodroplets using high-frequency sound waves. But then, instead of adding the liquid metal to the polymer, they grow the polymer on the tiny metal droplets, like a coating. MAJIDI: You basically start with your nanoscale droplets of liquid metal and then pretty much atom by atom or monomer by monomer you grow these polymer chains from the surface of these droplets—almost like the rays of the sun kind of emanating out. We’re working with these you know gallium indium liquid metal alloys. It wasn’t really obvious whether his polymerization technique would apply to this you know very different and somewhat unique class of materials. So he gave it a shot and it turned out it worked you know pretty much the same way it’s worked for a lot of the other types of metal nanoparticles that he’s worked with. We were delighted that it did. PATEL: The technique, called atom transfer radical polymerization, or ATRP—gives very fine control on the length of the polymer chains so the droplets get evenly suspended in the composite. Plus, it enables the researchers to suspend these droplets in a much wider range of polymers and materials systems than was previously possible. Until now, the researchers could use commercially available materials like silicone rubbers and polyurethanes. MAJIDI: The ability to suspend these liquid metal nanodroplets in virtually any kind of polymer or kind of matrix material opens the door for kind of a wide range of functionalities. A lot of the materials we have been exploring and will continue to explore, they could be used in say wearable or even implantable applications. So we could work with polymers that are biocompatible. We’ve been looking at different types of polyacrylates. Those are materials that are generally kind of popular in engineering. Everything from adhesives to 3D printing. And again using ATRP we’ve been able to show you can suspend liquid metal droplets in those materials. I mean if you just think about just generally where are plastics used and where are rubbers used, there’s a huge spectrum out there.

Subscribe (Stitcher)Subscribe (iTunes) For those just joining us, this is Part 2 of a series about the history of Metal Gear Solid, from the MSX to the PS4. If you haven't listened toPart 1,we recommend you do that now. This episode still works as a standalone, but we do call back to earlier points in the series.  Continue at your own peril. With that out of the way... We laugh at the most problematic game in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.  No matter which way you cut it, Metal Gear Solid 2 is the weird one. If Metal Gear Solid is military fiction built on camp but with delusions of grandeur, its sequel is military fiction subsumed by that delusion. The game remains fun, at times, but it has the poorest gameplay, worst level design and easily the most outlandish plot of the series. It's also closest series director Hideo Kojima has come to producing a video game art project. Metal Gear Solid 2 pretends to be a post-modern masterpiece. The game mocks the player, and goes out of its way to obfuscate its story. It tries to be about the need to break away from well-worn paths, by making you run well worn paths until you can see the ridges in the game's repetitive level design. The fact that it shifts lead characters from Solid Snake to Raiden is almost besides the point when the game introduces the poorly-motivated Patriots, an artificial intelligence bent on creating Big Boss' perfect future because of reasons. The story doesn't have the cocaine-addled madness of Snatcher to bring you along either. It just drags along, occasionally intermixing real life footage with cutscenes to further blur the line between reality and fiction to the point that it's not worth caring about. The whole effort feels like first-year literature student's attempt at post-modern fiction with a military pastiche. With bad characters, a confusing plot, and stunt marketing, it's no surprise Kojima isn't particularly proud of the project either. Agness Kaku, who translated the game, has faced no end of grief in the years after its release. A project for which she had so many restrictions, it had little chance of crossing the Pacific without complaint. Metal Gear Solid 2 is a game so off-track and laughed at, Kojima needed two sequels to make the series feel relevant again. Which we'll get to next time.  For now, this episode contains the following: A history of the game's development and it's plot. (00:00 - 16:45) Agness Kaku tells us about her translation of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Ghost Babel, and her current feelings on the project. We reference an ongoing libel suit she is currently engaged in. Agness presents her case in more detail here. (16:45- 39:20) Metal Gear Solid 2's legacy and why it was originally reviled by the fans. Subscribe (Stitcher)Subscribe (iTunes) The Built to Crew explore the world of Metal Gear Solid, tracing the series from its MSX origins to its increasingly nonsensical conclusion. Metal Gear Solid, first released in 1998, is one of the biggest game franchises out of Japan. Its combination of stealth gameplay, cinematic presentation, and charismatic voice acting has lent this series a charm it would have had otherwise. As for all of its moments of brilliance, Metal Gear Solid often feels like a game about the American military made by a film director for a Japanese audience. Which is exactly what it is, in all of its glory.Metal Gear Solid so frequently crosses the line between camp, military fetishisation, and half-hearted attempts at meaning that its hard to make heads or tails of any one part of it. Yet, it's impossible to deny that it's entertaining. Metal Gear Solid is the kind of game that drives up to your house around 3 a.m. and screams, "Get inside!" without telling where it's going or why. You get in anyway, not because you trust the driver, but because your life was so boring up until this lunatic stopped by. In the next two episodes, we follow Metal Gear Solid from its beginning to its conclusion, andhow the game intersected with our lives and those who worked on it.    In Part 1: 1987-1998, we trace the origins of Metal Gear Solid and how it affected games as a whole: The history of Metal Gear on the MSX, and the rise of its designer Hideo Kojima (1:00-12:30) The localization efforts of Jeremy Blaustein, and his time working on Snatcher, Metal Gear Solid, and Blackmore's Bane (12:35 - 30:20) Metal Gear Solid's plot, development and legacy, digging at why it became so popular (30:30 - 46:10) The novelisation process with Raymond Benson, and how Snake became more like Kurt Russell in the novel (46:10 - 56:30) This post and the audio file have been updated to reflect a correction regarding Jeremy Blaustein's translation work on Metal Gear Solid. The erroneous statement has since been removed. We regret the error. THANKS TO THE FREE MUSIC ARCHIVE FOR THE FOLLOWING MUSIC. "DARK MATTER" and "Rarified" BY PODINGTON BEAR, "It Was" by Cosmic Analog Ensemble, "Praise Book" by Bleak House, "OCLP" by Marco Raaphorst and we played the full "A Spy in The House of Love" by Noise Problems Selections by live at NP50th. In the early 1980's a pair of Texas brothers decided to form a band. 30+ years later, they are heavy metal legends. Pantera's rise to the top of the thrash heap happened despite a lack of heavy radio airplay and media hype. Their ascent was due to the power of grassroots word-of-mouth brought on by a legion of loyal fans that are still as fanatical about the band as they were at the end of their run in 2003. Today, we talk to a fan of the band that wound up in the inner-circle.   This week, Chris and Aaron are joined by rock photographer Chad Lee to discuss all-things-Pantera. Chad is not only a talented photographer but was a personal friend of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. He organizes the Nashville chapter of Ride for Dime. With the Nashville event coming up on September 27th, Chad sat down to discuss Pantera and Darrell's legacy, their material, and other entertaining stories about the "Cowboys from Hell."    Ride For Dime Inc, a 501 (c) 3, charitable organization, honors the lives of guitar hero and friend, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, Jeff Thompson, Nathan Bray, and Erin Halk. Ride for Dime has proudly given back to charities that were of interest to Darrell during his life as well as charities he would have been proud to be a part of, like IAVA. In 2010, they started planning and began raising funds for their own "Ride for Dime Scholarship Fund" and are well on their way with the addition of new chapters.   We encourage all of our local listeners to purchase a ticket to the upcoming event and hang out with us! Ticket purchase includes entry into a raffle for autographed guitars from KORN & Halestorm. If you aren't local, you can still purchase a ticket and that money will go towards the charity so you can help from abroad as well. What the heck is Liquid Metal? You will have to listen to this episode of TechFan to find out. Also, is digitizing archived materials actually good? The original Prince of Persia for the Apple II has it's source code released, and it's David's birthday!
