The show opens with a discussion about the frigid weather sweeping across the country, before moving into Apple's newly announced App Award Winners. The panel covers winners across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Vision Pro—including the iPhone App of the Year Timbo and Vision Pro winner Explore POV—with commentary on design choices, spatial computing innovation, and whether they personally use the selected apps. Next, the 2025 Apple Podcast of the Year—The Rest Is History—leads the group into a conversation about podcast quality, history storytelling, and the growing depth of Apple's podcast ecosystem. Updates to visionOS 26.2 RC are discussed, including expanded Travel Mode for buses and cars, support for spatial accessories (like Logitech's stylus), and improvements to Freeform. Eric even admits the new features were compelling enough for him to install the beta. Updates for iOS/iPadOS 26.2 RC also make news, adding the Liquid Glass lock screen slider, Reminders alarms, new AirPods Live Translation support in the EU, and Podcasts app refinements. Jeff warns listeners to hold off on macOS Tahoe due to persistent audio issues, reinforcing that stability still matters more than flash. The show then pivots into a major AI segment featuring: • Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.5, touted as the new coding champion among AI tools • ChatGPT's new holiday shopping assistant, which impressed some panelists • The controversial discovery of ads in ChatGPT's app code, sparking fears of "enshittification" • A possible Apple Health integration, which launches a passionate privacy debate • Real-world examples of AI massively reducing work time—from spreadsheets to meeting analytics The group revisits Apple's newest patent describing a crease-free foldable iPhone using liquid metal, prompting speculation on durability, user experience, and whether Apple can create a foldable without the hallmark crease. Apple's Year-End Music Charts and Apple Music Replay lead to panelists sharing their most-played artists—ranging from Supertramp to Rush to 80s icons—and poking fun at Dave's unavoidable Taylor Swift top rankings. Apple also releases a beautifully produced Accessibility in College ad, highlighting assistive technologies like magnifier, voiceover, and live captions. The panel praises Apple's leadership in accessible design and speculates on future features for glasses-based products. Finally, the team dives into a major Apple Arcade update, featuring five new games including Subway Surfers+, SpongeBob Patty Pursuit 2, PowerWash Simulator, and more. The topic unexpectedly evolves into a discussion of how simulation games—like power washing or trucking—can offer therapeutic calm for many players.

In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Sophia Chen interviews Ashley Bucsek from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor about her laboratory-scale three-dimensional (3D) x-ray diffraction (XRD) microscope to replace studies done in synchrotron facilities. A key element of the design is the material used to make the x-rays. Instead of using a solid metal as a target, Bucsek's research group used a liquid metal source to generate the x-rays, thereby circumventing melting. Among the advantages of miniaturizing the microscope are its immediate availability and the possibility of conducting long-term studies. This work was published in a recent issue of Nature Communications.

We're winding out our theme of dystopian futures in movies and we absolutely have to go back in time, once again, and try to prevent catastrophe. The Terminator is back and this time? He's your new dad and he's been sent back in time by your 45 year old self. Devastation may have been delayed but still imminent. There's hope still in keeping John Connor alive to destroy Skynet tomorrow. The resistance hacked an Arnold bot and sent it back but Skynet sent a Liquid Metal prototype back too and he's scary as fuck. A defining film for a generation, an exceptional action movie and a rare sequel that is better than the original. Of course we're talking about “TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY” from 1991 directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick, Edward Furlong and Joe Morton. With the help of his pet Terminator, John Connor and his mother can prevent the future and stop Skynet on the cusp of its creation so long as they can survive the relentless T-1000. There's always a few holes in any time travel story but we might enjoy this movie now even more than we did when we were kids. Jimmy knows what you want to see. The world needs to move to renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind. The problem with those is that they're intermittent. That's because the Sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow. What we need, then, are efficient ways of storing energy: efficient batteries. Currently lithium ion batteries are being used but there are issues around their cost, how long they last, and their safety. Donald Sadoway Hope is on the horizon in the form of liquid metal batteries. At a recent event organised by the Newton Gateway to Mathematics in Cambridge we met Donald Sadoway who played a very important role in pioneering these batteries. In this podcast he talks to us what they are and why they are better, when they'll be commercially available, and why sometimes it's best to ignore the experts. To watch a talk given by Sadoway at the Newton Gateway event go to the Newton Gateway website. And to find out more about magnetohydrodynamics, a theory that has been used to describe liquid metal batteries, go here.

In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Laura Leay interviews Michael Dickey from North Carolina State University about his work manipulating liquid gallium. When submerged in an aqueous solution, liquid gallium will form a sphere. When fed by gravity through a thin nozzle that is surrounded by aqueous solution, it will instead flow into the shape of a wire. Passing an electrical current through the liquid metal wire means that a magnetic field is created, which means the wire can be shaped using external magnets, following the Lorentz force. This research was published in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (doi:10.1073/pnas.2117535119).
Tali Rosman was responsible for a diverse amount of roles worldwide, including at Stratasys and the Israeli Air Force, before landing a job at Xerox. Her task, to lead Xerox's Elem Additive unit. The first job she has is to commercialise ElemX Xerox's drop-by-drop metal 3D printing technology. She tells us how she's going to do that, for what markets it is suited, and what applications she is targeting. No, this is no broad spectrum push or something targeting the usual suspects of aviation or orthopaedics; Tali is taking a tight zoom on the technology's strengths and focusing on aluminum and MRO. It's a fascinating look at an outlier go-to-market that could be a portend of more Xerox technologies to come.
