The U.S. national emergency to respond to Covid-19 officially ended on April 10, 2023. A separate national health emergency related to the virus is set to expire on May 11th. So with the pandemic coming to a close, we've decided to wind down this podcast series. We just have a few stories left to share before we go. In December of 2020 we spoke with Danny Mindlin, an ER doctor at Providence Medical Center. Over Zoom, he shared his experiences working in emergency care while hospitals were adapting to an influx of patients sick with Covid-19.  On April 4th of this year, Dr. Mindlin stepped into the ATMI studio and sat down with producer Kendrick Whiteman to give an update on what working in the Emergency Room at Providence is like now. He reflects on the early days of the pandemic, the new normal of day-to-day operations at the hospital, the long term psychological effects of Covid, and much more. Hosted by Maria Koop. Music by Devin Shreckengost and Kendrick Whiteman. Alaska Teen Media Institute is based in Anchorage, Alaska. We would like to acknowledge the Dena'ina people, whose land we work on. What do you think of when we talk about the spine in yoga? Probably anatomy, the spine in Asana, posture, age of the spine, backbends and more. But mostly we end up staying in the physical , western view of the spine in yoga. But according to yogis, the spine is so much more than just the physical spine. There is the Sukshma (subtle ) spine that is expansive, and part of the subtle body. Having vast implications on the journey of a seeker. In this episode, we dive into the spine and yoga with Kaya Mindlin, who walks us through mythological stories from the puranas to helping us understand the subtle spine in ways that will be new to many of you but also takes you beyond just the physical spine.

We especially explore the ways being a parent can often feel "in the way" of our spiritual goals and practices. The difficult distance between our ideals and reality. Kaya speaks so beautifully to the gift we can give ourselves and our children when we practice and live our spiritual journey as family. In this episode, I share about my own personal upbringing, raised in a yogic intentional community. Kaya also has a deep and meaningful relationship with this community, and we both hold so much love and respect for the teachings, the people and the beauty that is present there. While I do speak to some of my personal experiences and interpretations, I am sure they were unique to my own experience, my own family system and the projecting we as humans do onto others. ep. #9 If you've dipped your toe in the waters of yogic practice or philosophy, and you have if you've ever even googled "mindfulness", this conversation will deepen and clarify some of the common mistranslations and misunderstandings of how to live our lives while also walking a spiritual path. So I ask you to hold what you hear with the awareness of both being true: reality and projection. Things we touch on: The misconceptions of practicing non-attachment The absolute and the relative realities we exist in Spiritual bypass Splitting of life into spiritual life and the rest The four stages of life How not to sacrifice your spiritual life Accepting or rejecting mental/emotional reactions We can model our humanity for our kids What family spiritual practice can look like Clarifying karma yoga and selfless service I do my work so you can do yours Where to start Kaya Mindlin is a Yoga therapist and educator who has been teaching the “softer side of yoga” for 19 years. There is so much pressure these days to build your list, do ads on social media, teach anything and everything that you are given the opportunity to do, serve everyone, give away freebies and hope that some day someone will engage with you. And this has it's place... but it's not a fit for every yoga teacher. In Kaya's business, she dug a well with a small but incredibly committed number of yoga teachers, and she's had a successful private practice of yoga therapy clients and students, yoga teachers who train with her, and a yoga studio in the Bay Area. She was the main breadwinner in her family for a chunk of those years, and on this episode she's sharing how she did and how you can too! Kaya also shares why and how she transferred her business online, what that process has taught her, and some of the biggest business lessons she's learned through her career. Enjoy!
