Entering Promised Land | Joshua 1

Broward Church

In this sermon from Joshua 1, we see God calling Joshua and the new generation of Israel to cross the Jordan River and take possession of the land He promised centuries earlier. The lesson is clear: God's promises are certain, but receiving them requires courageous faith, obedience to His Word, and a willingness to step into the unknown. Drawing from Israel's history, New Testament truths, and real-life applications, this sermon challenges us to stop settling for a fraction of what God offers. Whether it's peace, joy, love, or purpose, God has already said “yes” to every spiritual blessing in Christ — but we must walk in them. Like Joshua, we face our own “Jordan Rivers” that test our trust and commitment. Will we remain in the wilderness, or will we step forward in strength, courage, and obedience to claim the fullness of what God has prepared?

For centuries, monuments have telegraphed the values and origin myths of dominant culture in public space and on massive scale. They have signaled both who is part of a culture and who is not, often overlooking histories that complicate the stories they tell. Yet in the last 50 years in the United States, the role of monuments has changed significantly. Numerous historical monuments have been removed or toppled, bringing to the fore a long-repressed conversation about the relationship between the monumental landscape and national identity. In Monumental: How a New Generation of Artists Is Shaping the Memorial Landscape (MIT Press, 2025), Dr. Cat Dawson takes up the social, political, and art historical causes and ramifications of this important shift.Examining the conditions that have led to and define this new era, Dr. Dawson reveals that these interventions are as indebted to the monumental tradition as they are to representational strategies that grew out of twentieth-century social justice efforts, from the Civil Rights movement to queer organizing during the AIDS crisis.Since 2014, a new generation of artists has established a groundbreaking role for monuments, calling into question the very notion of what a monument is through novel investigations of how symbolic structures can be made and what stories they can tell. This book tells the important story of that sea change. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In our first half hour we speak to Alex Tyrrell leader of the Green Party of Quebec about a disturbing trend of NATO aligned entities looking to promote themselves under the guise of civic participation of our youth to reverse the anti-war trend that has developed among young people today. Then in our second half hour, we talk to revered peace activist figure Medea Benjamin about NATO countries' overwhelmingly agreed to addition of 5 Percent of nations' GDP to defensive purposes will also subtract from our commitment to the environment and each other. Finally, peace activist Ken Stone joins us to talk about CANA. The Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association, and how it too drowns out Canadian military and foreign policy independence in the waters that power Defence contractors and Weapons manufacturers at the expense of everyone from the elderly to the next generation.

In this episode we welcome Dr. Michael Morales—professor of biblical studies at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary—for a conversation exploring the profound theological vision of the book of Numbers. Drawing from his newly released two-volume commentary in the Apollos Old Testament Commentary series, Dr. Morales unveils Numbers as more than ancient census lists and wilderness wanderings. Instead, it emerges as a richly textured narrative of covenant community, leadership, and the Lord's presence among his people. Listeners will discover how the structure of Israel's camp reflects Edenic hope and eschatological promise, how Numbers addresses the roles of prophet, priest, and king, and why the priestly blessing and Balaam's oracles form theological bookends to this journey toward the Promised Land. Dr. Morales also shares personal reflections from his ten-year labor on the commentary, emphasizing the pastoral power and redemptive-historical depth of this often-overlooked book. Whether you're a pastor, seminary student, or serious Bible reader, this conversation will reinvigorate your love for the Pentateuch and deepen your grasp of how all Scripture points us to Christ. Nostalgia can be a balm. Especially when we're in what feels like a never-ending season of upheaval and change, where every time we start to get our footing, something shifts yet again. When we're in the throes of change–in the liminal space, the in-between, the in-betwixt–we as human beings are neurologically wired to seek out what's known, to reach for comfort and what feels like home. And nostalgia does that for us. It's no wonder we look back fondly on simpler times, real or imagined.Because nostalgia isn't necessarily the truth. And nostalgia doesn't always serve our growth. Connecting over “Remember when?” can too easily divide us when it becomes a rigid longing for a past that excludes and harms others or ignores painful truths. So many of us are living and leading in the confusion, disorientation, and discomfort of these liminal spaces of change. Which is why I invited today's guest to join me for a conversation about the pulls of nostalgia, the discomfort of liminal space, and the courage it takes to lead ourselves and others through uncertainty without losing our way.Chris Hoff, PhD, LMFT is a narrative therapist, educator, podcaster, and founder of the California Family Institute. Raised in Catalonia to international parents, new generation migrants are a growing demographic in Catalonia, however they often navigate dual identities, balancing their family's cultural heritage with local traditions. This week on Filling the Sink we dedicate an episode to exploring the challenges faced by this significant collective. Zenia Hellgren, Doctor of Sociology a Senior Researcher at Pompeu Fabra University, discusses what identity is and how young people with a migrant background may find it hard to achieve a true sense of belonging in any one place. Reporter Gigi Giulia talks to secondary school teacher Mariona Jorba Solsona about the importance of education in breaking down language barriers and creating an inclusive environment which nurtures hybrid identities. Plus, we meet two new generation Catalans to hear their stories, and host Beth Cohen analyzes Catalonia's migration history and how it has shaped the current social reality. This week, our Catalan phrase is “És tard i vol ploure” - “It's late and it wants to rain”. It's an expression that is used when time is running out or something is too late to fix. It can also be used as a way of saying goodbye or telling someone to hurry up.

Mill House Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2025 88:43

Capt. Pauly Ross is quickly becoming one of the most respected young guides in the Florida Keys, and for good reason. At just 24 years old, he's already earning a reputation that many seasoned captains spend a lifetime building. Born and raised in Islamorada, Pauly grew up on the deck of the Relentless, the legendary offshore fishing vessel captained by his father, Paul Ross—an icon in the sportfishing world with seven Gold Cup Sailfish Series titles to his name. The Ross family name carries serious weight on the water, and Pauly is honoring that legacy while forging his own path in the backcountry and tarpon arenas. With a quiet confidence and humble nature, Pauly operates with the precision, calm, and instincts of someone twice his age. He's a natural guide—sharp-eyed, tactical, and relentlessly focused on giving his anglers the best possible shot. Pauly's list of accolades is already impressive. He's a multi-time winner of the Poor Boys Tarpon Tournament and a champion of the Herman Lucerne Backcountry Tournament. His name is consistently in the mix during tarpon season, where he's recognized as a serious threat across all the major tournaments. Although, the most amazing accomplishment, I believe, is that he recently caught a super slam (Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Snook, & Redfish) solo on fly in one day! I am not sure anyone has done that to date - but could be wrong. But accolades only tell part of the story. What sets Pauly apart is his work ethic and presence on the water. Whether poling through skinny flats or chasing rolling tarpon at dawn, he brings the same level of preparation, quiet intensity, and deep respect for the sport every day. His guests quickly realize they're fishing with someone special—a guide with both heart and heritage. Capt. Pauly Ross represents the next generation of elite Florida Keys fishing. And if his early success is any indication, he's just getting started.
