Like Pepsi in 1984, coffee is the "Choice of a New Generation"... but maybe not in the same way as we of older generations are comfortable with. The ways digital natives are consuming coffee today may be unique, but as with all coffee consumers before and after, they are seeking the identity, belonging, utility, and promises associated with coffee and the community it has always facilitated. The question we need to ask is how do we in the world f coffee shops acknowledge, welcome, include, adn understand these very important consumers? To help us explore this we are chatting with friend of the show and deep thinker extraordinaire, Kosta Kallivrousis! Kosta Kallivrousis has spent over 14 years working across the specialty-coffee supply chain. His unique combination of experience as a barista, licensed Q grader, and in strategic sales at both roasted and green coffee companies has given him a 360°-view of the specialty-coffee world. Kosta is passionate about building equitable sourcing relationships between coffee producers and buyers, challenging industry norms around taste and value, and advocating for greater connection and community in the coffee industry. Many people who grew up in Christian homes drift from the faith they were raised in. With Abraham now off the scene, how will God train his son, Isaac, to make his father's faith his own? In this message, Dale King, pastor of Calvary Fellowship, explores the way God forms Isaac's faith in Genesis 26. Scripture passages cited (or alluded to) in this message include Genesis 15:6; 21:33; 26; 1 Corinthians 15:33; and Hebrews 11:13.

In this sermon from Joshua 1, we see God calling Joshua and the new generation of Israel to cross the Jordan River and take possession of the land He promised centuries earlier. The lesson is clear: God's promises are certain, but receiving them requires courageous faith, obedience to His Word, and a willingness to step into the unknown. Drawing from Israel's history, New Testament truths, and real-life applications, this sermon challenges us to stop settling for a fraction of what God offers. Whether it's peace, joy, love, or purpose, God has already said “yes” to every spiritual blessing in Christ — but we must walk in them. Like Joshua, we face our own “Jordan Rivers” that test our trust and commitment. Will we remain in the wilderness, or will we step forward in strength, courage, and obedience to claim the fullness of what God has prepared?

Today on the podcast is Yosuke Shibata.Yosuke is a rising junior out of South Eugene High School in Eugene, Oregon.Remember the name, folks.A lot of people are asking the question: “After Owen Powell, Josiah Tostenson, Tayvon Kitchen, Charlie Vause, all these guys who graduated, who is going to rise to the top on the high school scene?” Well, ladies and gentlemen, I have an answer for you. Yosuke is going to be a star on the national stage in high school.Yosuke has run 1:54 for 800m, 3:55 for 1500m, 4:12 for mile, and 14:59 for 5K XC. While those times might not yet seem like they are the caliber of a national champ, as we talked off the air, just before the start of this past track season, Yosuke, at the worst possible time, got hit with atypical pneumonia. He couldn't run or workout for 2 weeks. He was too weak to even go to school some days. And as Yosuke described it, it was a massively difficult point in his career, having to swallow his big goals for the season and really just take it one step at a time. He said that he had to remember that he was running to become better, not just to give up when something doesn't go to to plan.Ultimately, Yosuke, while not reaching his original goals, made a very admirable comeback. He set PRs across multiple events, finished 3rd in the 800m at State, 6th in the 1500m, and won the Nike Outdoor Nationals (NON) Emerging Elite Mile.More that just the results, the fact that Yosuke had the mental fortitude to salvage his track season, shows a level of grit and character-development. And honestly, those mental skills could be the separators as he emerges over these next two years.Aside from that, Yosuke and I had a fantastic conversation. He had so many stories and insights, especially when it comes down to race tactics, making mistakes, and mental toughness. So much to learn, I know you'll enjoy my chat with him today. But before we get into the show, please, if you haven't already, and you are enjoying this podcast, I would really appreciate a follow and a five-star review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or whatever other platform you are listening on. That goes a long way in supporting the growth of The Sunday Shakeout. That's all I ask. But other than that, sit back, relax, and enjoy my conversation, with the one and only, Mr. Yosuke Shibata.I hope you enjoy this episode of The Sunday Shakeout!

Growing up with both White and Hispanic heritage, Lucia struggled to connect with her Mexican roots as she was raised away from that side of her family. Determined to embrace her lineage, she became fluent in Spanish while studying abroad in Spain. As a passionate music lover raised in Washington state, Lucia was particularly influenced by Brandi Carlile. A chance encounter in 2018, while Lucia was helping set up for Brandi's rehearsal at her high school, led to an impromptu singing session with one of the band members. Brandi overheard Lucia's talent and invited her to perform at a fundraiser concert. For centuries, monuments have telegraphed the values and origin myths of dominant culture in public space and on massive scale. They have signaled both who is part of a culture and who is not, often overlooking histories that complicate the stories they tell. Yet in the last 50 years in the United States, the role of monuments has changed significantly. Numerous historical monuments have been removed or toppled, bringing to the fore a long-repressed conversation about the relationship between the monumental landscape and national identity. In Monumental: How a New Generation of Artists Is Shaping the Memorial Landscape (MIT Press, 2025), Dr. Cat Dawson takes up the social, political, and art historical causes and ramifications of this important shift.Examining the conditions that have led to and define this new era, Dr. Dawson reveals that these interventions are as indebted to the monumental tradition as they are to representational strategies that grew out of twentieth-century social justice efforts, from the Civil Rights movement to queer organizing during the AIDS crisis.Since 2014, a new generation of artists has established a groundbreaking role for monuments, calling into question the very notion of what a monument is through novel investigations of how symbolic structures can be made and what stories they can tell. This book tells the important story of that sea change. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. You can find Miranda's interviews on New Books with Miranda Melcher, wherever you get your podcasts. Learn more about your ad choices. For centuries, monuments have telegraphed the values and origin myths of dominant culture in public space and on massive scale. In this episode we welcome Dr. Michael Morales—professor of biblical studies at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary—for a conversation exploring the profound theological vision of the book of Numbers. Drawing from his newly released two-volume commentary in the Apollos Old Testament Commentary series, Dr. Morales unveils Numbers as more than ancient census lists and wilderness wanderings. Instead, it emerges as a richly textured narrative of covenant community, leadership, and the Lord's presence among his people. Listeners will discover how the structure of Israel's camp reflects Edenic hope and eschatological promise, how Numbers addresses the roles of prophet, priest, and king, and why the priestly blessing and Balaam's oracles form theological bookends to this journey toward the Promised Land. Dr. Morales also shares personal reflections from his ten-year labor on the commentary, emphasizing the pastoral power and redemptive-historical depth of this often-overlooked book. Whether you're a pastor, seminary student, or serious Bible reader, this conversation will reinvigorate your love for the Pentateuch and deepen your grasp of how all Scripture points us to Christ. Nostalgia can be a balm. Especially when we're in what feels like a never-ending season of upheaval and change, where every time we start to get our footing, something shifts yet again. When we're in the throes of change–in the liminal space, the in-between, the in-betwixt–we as human beings are neurologically wired to seek out what's known, to reach for comfort and what feels like home. And nostalgia does that for us. It's no wonder we look back fondly on simpler times, real or imagined.Because nostalgia isn't necessarily the truth. And nostalgia doesn't always serve our growth. Connecting over “Remember when?” can too easily divide us when it becomes a rigid longing for a past that excludes and harms others or ignores painful truths. So many of us are living and leading in the confusion, disorientation, and discomfort of these liminal spaces of change. Which is why I invited today's guest to join me for a conversation about the pulls of nostalgia, the discomfort of liminal space, and the courage it takes to lead ourselves and others through uncertainty without losing our way.Chris Hoff, PhD, LMFT is a narrative therapist, educator, podcaster, and founder of the California Family Institute. His work explores the intersection of psychotherapy, poststructural theory, and speculative futures. Chris is known for his ability to translate complex ideas into pragmatic tools for clients and clinicians alike. In a time when many churches are facing decline, especially among younger generations, discipleship leaders are being called to think differently, lead intentionally, and rely fully on the power of the Holy Spirit. Church revitalization isn't about returning to old models—it's about making space for God to move in new and powerful ways through transformed lives and authentic community. In today's episode, host Brian Daniel welcomes Sarah Jackson to discuss her work with the Church Revitalization Trust (CRT) and their mission to renew and revitalize churches across the UK and beyond. Sarah shares honest insights into the challenges churches face today - particularly in engaging Gen Z—and offers a hopeful vision of what's possible when churches create transformational environments that are both Spirit-led and deeply rooted in relational discipleship. The conversation explores the impact of the Alpha course in helping people explore faith in a welcoming and accessible way, as well as the critical need for churches to engage their communities, foster discipleship, and equip leaders to shepherd spiritual renewal. Sarah also highlights the exciting movement among young people encountering Jesus, and what church leaders can do to nurture these moments into lasting transformation. If you're a small group leader or pastor longing to see your church come alive again, this episode will reignite your hope and offer practical steps toward Spirit-empowered revitalization. If this episode encouraged you, please take a moment to rate, review, and share it with someone else passionate about church renewal and disciple-making.SHOW LINKS: Revitalise TrustCLICK HERE to read the report from Lifeway Research about the state of groups.
