Greetings Glocal Citizens! For this two-part conversation, I catch up with Oakland-based serial cultural entrepreneur, Isis Asare. Born in Harlem, New York to Ghanaian parents Isis, a fellow Stanford University alum, has called New York, Houston, Ghana (as a Peace Corps volunteer), Seattle, and now Oakland, California home at various times in her life. She once described herself as using her over-priced education, love of technology, and acumen for experimentation to hack Hollywood. And this is where her first entrepreneurial enterprise—Sistah Sinema emerged. With Sistah Sinema her goal was to be a part of a movement to create a global market for independent film fostering deep, engaging discussions about the difficult issues of gender, sexuality, race, and class. In 2015 she successfully exited by selling the platform to community investors. With over a decade of finance and business development experience at Fortune 500 companies such as T-Mobile, Microsoft, Shutterfly, and Amazon, in 2019 she went on to launch Sistah Scifi, the first Black-owned bookstore focused on Afrofuturism, Indigenous Futurism, Science Fiction, and Fantasy in the United States. Between 2019 and 2020, Sistah Scifi sales increased tenfold through expanding physical book selection; launching private label shirts, sweatshirts, and bags; and offering audiobooks and ebooks. Nichelle Nichols died of heart failure on Saturday July 30th in Silver City NM. She was 89 years old. Nichelle Nichols first appeared on Star Trek on Sept 8, 1966 as Lt. Nyota Uhura. She was one of the first Black women to have a leading role on TV according to the NYT. Star Trek was on TV from 1966 to 1969, but the show remains popular and iconic and Nichelles Uhura remains beloved by fans all over the world. Nichelle appeared in 66 episodes of Star Trek. According to the NYT, In 1977 she became an ambassador of sorts for NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), she later spoke of her pride in recruiting the first Black and woman astronaut hopefuls. Her efforts resulted in over 2,600 women and people of color applicants. In 2012 she was a keynote speaker at the Goddard Space Center. Our guest is Lawrence Ware, Co-director of Oklahoma State University African Studies Program and a contributing writer to Slate, the NYT, The Root. Commentary on race and politics have appeared in the Huffington Post Live, on NPR and TV One. Without the labor of farm workers the food supply chain in CA the nation and countries the US is trading with would be interrupted. Immigrant farm workers make up an estimated 73% of agriculture workers in the United States today. Farm labor is absolutely essential work that puts food on our tables across the country, powers the economy and supports our communities, from dairy farms in Wisconsin to strawberry fields in Florida and apple orchards in Washington. Begun in 1962 by Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, Gilbert Padilla, and other early organizers, the United Farm Workers of America is the nations first enduring and largest farm workers union. The UFW continues organizing in major agricultural sectors, chiefly in California. Through a series of marches, national consumer boycotts, and fasts, the United Farm Workers union attracted national headlines, gained labor contracts with higher wages and improved working conditions, galvanizing the Chicano movement. The struggle of farm workers for their rights, and better wages and living conditions continues today. And now, the United Farm Workers(UFW) union is set to embark on a 24-day, 335-mile march from Delano to Sacramento to urge Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign the CA Agricultural Labor Relations Voting Choice Act (AB 2183) introduced by Assembly member Mark Stone, a Democrat from Santa Cruz, CA. that would permit farmworkers to vote from home giving farm workers protection from intimidation in elections to choose a union. Farmworkers and their supporters are set to arrive at the state Capitol on Aug. 26, a few days before the legislative session draws to a close. The trek kicked off this Wednesday August 3rd at the farm workers historic Forty Acres complex in Delano, where the union began 60 years ago in September 1962. It ends at the state Capitol on August 26th. The march route traces the path of the historic Cesar Chavez-led 1966 peregrinacion or march, procession style, that first brought the farm workers grievances" which included: exposure to deadly chemicals, inadequate food and shelter, and sexual harassment, while receiving meager wages" before the nations conscience.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear says damage to critical infrastructure is hampering efforts to help residents hit by massive flooding. More heavy rain arrived in the region where the death toll climbed to at least 26 Sunday. President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 for the second straight day, in what appears to be a rare case of “rebound” following treatment with an anti-viral drug. White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor says in a letter Sunday that the president “continues to feel well” and will keep on working from the executive residence. Two bicyclists are dead in western Michigan after an SUV driven by a suspected drunken driver struck a group of riders. They were on an endurance ride Saturday for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Authorities say a small explosive device carried by a makeshift drone blew up Sunday at the headquarters of Russia's Black Sea Fleet on the Crimean Peninsula, wounding six people. In other developments, one of Ukraine's richest men, a grain merchant, has been killed in what Ukrainian authorities say was a carefully targeted Russian missile strike on his home. Former Philippine President Fidel Valdez Ramos, a U.S.-trained ex-general who saw action in the Korean and Vietnam wars and played a key role in a 1986 pro-democracy uprising that ousted a dictator, has died. He was 94. The NBA great Bill Russell has died at age 88. His family said on social media that Russell died on Sunday. The statement did not give the cause of death, but Russell was not well enough to present the NBA Finals MVP trophy in June due to a long illness. Russell anchored a Boston Celtics dynasty that won 11 titles in 13 years. Relatives say Sunday that Nichelle Nichols, who broke ground for Black women acting on television as the beautiful, no-nonsense communications officer Lt. Nyota Uhura on the original “Star Trek” TV series, has died at the age of 89. A ticket bought in a Chicago suburb has beaten the odds and won a $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot. A lottery official says there is one winning ticket and it was purchased at a store in Des Plaines. The winning numbers drawn Friday night are: 13-36-45-57-67, with a Mega Ball of 14. The summer box office showed signs of slowing down this weekend as the animated “DC League of Super-Pets” opened in theaters across North America. Studio estimates Sunday show the superhero spinoff about Superman's dog earned $23 million from over 4,000 locations. That is slightly less than expected but enough to capture the first-place spot and knock Jordan Peele's “Nope” into second place. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has confirmed she will visit four Asian countries this week but made no mention of a possible stop in Taiwan that has riled Beijing, which claims the island as its own territory. Pelosi said in a statement she is leading a congressional delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan to discuss trade, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, security and democratic governance. The House has passed legislation to revive a ban on certain semi-automatic guns. It's a response to the crush of mass shootings ripping through communities nationwide. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pushed the bill forward Friday, but the legislation is likely to go nowhere in the Senate. U.S. regulators say they are no longer considering authorizing second COVID-19 booster shots for all adults under 50 this summer. Instead the Food and Drug Administration said it will await revamped vaccines targeting the newest viral subvariants that are expected by September. Hundreds of tourism projects nationwide are collectively getting about $2.4 billion in federal coronavirus relief funding. The money has aided everything from a gas station expansion in California to new sports facilities in Georgia, and a culturally diverse music in Nashville, Tennessee. Prices for gas, food and rent are soaring. The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates to the highest level since 2018. The U.S. economy has shrunk for two straight quarters. Economists are divided over whether a recession is looming. Need to save money? Making a budget, paying attention to your savings account and buying things second-hand can all help. Country Music Hall of Famer Barbara Mandrell retired from music two decades ago, but the Grand Ole Opry still feels like home to her. The 73-year-old Grammy winner made a rare public appearance at the Opry's Saturday night show to celebrate her 50th anniversary of becoming an Opry member. As manchetes deste ano são: “Somos mais importantes que Jesus”, diz John Lennon; Na corrida espacial, a Lua está na mira; Na Califórnia, Panteras Negras versus a força policial; Buzz Aldrin faz o primeiro selfie no espaço; E, a música indiana traz calma à banda britânica The Beatles. In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films, and the eleventh film in the "Star Trek" film franchise: the 2009 film "Star Trek" directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman. A reboot of the main characters of the original "Star Trek" TV series, portrayed by a new cast, the story of the film takes place in a alternate reality which was created when a Romulan mining ship, commanded by Captain Nero (played by Eric Bana) and a ship piloted by Ambassador Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy) arrived in the past after falling into a black hole - essentially changing how events would precede because of their presence, including: the death of the newly born James T. Kirk's father, George Kirk (played by Chris Hemsworth) the first officer of the USS Kelvin. As a result of the destruction of the USS Kelvin - which George Kirk had attempted to use to stop Nero's vessel, the Nerada - certain events played out differently than they they had in the original timeline that had been shown in all the previous TV series and films, and as a result certain characters ultimately met one another at different times and in different circumstances than they would have been expected to previously. Over the course of the film, we see the rapid beginnings of a friendship forged between James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) and Spock (played by Zachary Quinto), and the coming together of the iconic crew of the USS Enterprise, including: Nyota Uhura (played by Zoe Saldana), Hikaru Sulu (played by John Cho), Montgomery Scott (played by Simon Pegg), Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy (played by Karl Urban), and Pavel Chekov (played by Anton Yelchin), as they become a team and fight against the wrath of Nero who personally blames Spock and the Federation for the death of his family who were destroyed on Romulus as a result of the elder Spock being unable to save them from a supernova explosion. The soundtrack of the film was composed by Michael Giacchino. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message
