This week on the pod, we get started with our new Acteurist Oeuvre-View series: Margaret Sullavan. We were expecting solid entries from the selective Sullavan, but weren't fully prepared for John Stahl to match his Back Street achievement with Sullavan's screen debut, Only Yesterday (1933). We discuss its relationship to Opühls' Letter from an Unknown Woman, with which it shares a source, while concluding that it has more in common with Mervyn LeRoy's Random Harvest. We also posit Stahl-Sullavan as the American Ozu-Hara... if only they'd worked together more than once. Next, another Universal movie set against a backdrop of social chaos, Frank Borzage's Little Man, What Now? (1934), where Sullavan is tasked with the burden of being the entire meaning of a man's life in a bewildering hell-world. Spoiler: we think she's up to the job. We talk differences and similarities between the social outlooks of the Two Franks (Borzage and Capra) and their depictions of grace. This is going to be a long one, so make some popcorn! It is a pleasure to welcome singer-songwriter Payson Lewis to The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Payson taught himself how to play the piano and sing through listening to his brothers’ vast CD collection. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the recording industry. While attending the University of Southern California, Payson joined the A cappella music group – the SoCal VoCals. The team eventually competed on the inaugural season of the NBC defunct singing competition: The Sing-Off. The SoCal VoCals took home fourth place. After college, Payson Lewis took his talents around the world including performing with orchestras in Korea and Taiwan. He also starred in several theatrical productions in Chicago and Las Vegas and sang on several motion picture soundtracks. Payson also scored acting roles on hit shows and mini-series including How I Met Your Mother, Jane the Virgin, and The People vs. OJ Simpson. He also released a plethora of covers, including Adele’s “Hello,” Taylor Swift’s “Out of the Woods,” and a mash-up of Rihanna’s “Work” and Zayn Malik’s “Pillowtalk,” that gained him lots of YouTube subscribers and a shout out from Perez Hilton. Payson Lewis’ original music has been featured on countless digital media outlets, including Hollywood Life, PARADE Magazine, and Vents Magazine. In this edition of The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Payson Lewis spoke about his experience on The Sing-Off. He also talked about several of his songs such as “Only Yesterday,” “Bad Influence,” “Sound of a Voice,” and “Nothing to You,” Payson’s most-streamed song on Spotify.

Only Yesterday - 2007 Directed by Samantha Peters Spotify Playlist The Carpenters were a sister and brother duo from California (by way of Connecticut) first associated - often with derision - with the gauzy and sentimental music of the early seventies that began to out-populate the squall of psychedelic and urgent rock that defined the end of the sixties. But after the death of Karen Carpenter at just thirty-two due to complications related to an eating disorder, even the band’s most innocent songs are now retroactively cut with melancholy. As this BBC documentary also reveals, Karen’s silent suffering was part of a pattern as The Carpenters were ground down by the myriad stresses of constantly touring, drug addiction, and broken romance. Alternately cast as simple and doomed, we discuss a film that gives the siblings the nuance they deserve. Animation doesn't have to be all catbuses and gunships. In this episode we look at Isao Takahata's Only Yesterday - his second feature released in 1991 - a quiet slice-of-life drama about a young woman who travels to the countryside while reminiscing about her childhood.

They also chat about what they checked out over the break including novels by Thomas King and Yu Miri, Only Yesterday, Brave New Animal and more. Next week the Watchorama starts in earnest, check our Twitter (twitter.com/geekdownpod) for the full rundown of what we'll be checking out. Connor & Riley just couldn't resist talking about another animated film for this miniseries. They talk how everyday life can look extraordinary in animation when it's in the hands of Isao Takahata. 22 episodes later... Michael and Jake reach the final feature in the Studio Ghibli library. This curio - a teen romance in the vein of Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart and From Up On Poppy Hill - is not only unique because it is Ghibli's only made-for-TV movie, it's also the first feature from the Studio to be directed by someone other than co-founders Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. No pressure, Tomomi Mochizuki... A follow-up to one of Ghibli's most controversial releases, From Up On Poppy Hill was director Goro Miyazaki's second crack at the whip after his debut, Tales From Earthsea. But Poppy Hill is a very different proposition: a nostalgic, wholesome, period-set romance that harks back to Ghibli gems Only Yesterday and Whisper Of The Heart. Does he find firmer footing as a filmmaker this time around?Follow Ghibliotheque on Twitter:@ghibliotheque@MichaelJLeader – Michael@jakehcunningham – JakeProduced by Michael Leader, Jake Cunningham, Harold McShiel and Steph Watts. Let's be real, the top tier animation studios consist of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios & Studio Ghibli. Co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has been able to consistently put out great content, with no lack in creativity or imagination. Studio Ghibli produces animated films made for both children and adults, and explores stories and themes not found in other movies. Their films usually tend to have environmental, anti-war themes, and often feature strong female characters. Studio Ghibli was truly ahead of its time, and maybe still is.Join Off the Highway regulars, Chazz, Wes and Sumner, as they are joined by their friend & editor Joli (The Lunch Table Podcast) as they begin a series on the Japanese anime legend, Studio Ghibli.Facebook // Twitter // InstagramFreeway ProductionsStudio Ghibli Feature Films:Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)Castle in the Sky (1986)Grave of the Fireflies (1988)My Neighbor Totoro (1988)*Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)Only Yesterday (1991)Porco Rosso (1992)Pom Poko (1994)Whisper of the Heart (1995)Princess Mononoke (1997)*My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)Spirited Away (2001)*The Cat Returns (2002)Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)*Tales from Earthsea (2006)Ponyo (2008)The Secret World of Arrietty (2010)From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)The Wind Rises (2013)The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)When Marnie Was There (2014)How Do You Live? This season of Ghibliotheque comes to a close with the final masterpiece from the legendary filmmaker, and Studio Ghibli co-founder, Isao Takahata. Described by Hayao Miyazaki as 'descended from a giant sloth', Takahata took his sweet time with his quietly experimental take on the 10th century folk tale, working at his own glacial pace and missing many production deadlines before the film's eventual release in November 2013. Takahata's previous films, Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday and Pom Poko were all hits with Jake in previous seasons - will the streak continue? Welcome to the Ghibliotheque, the podcast that leafs through the library of films from the world’s greatest animation studio, Studio Ghibli. In this special end-of-season episode, Michael & Jake are joined by Telegraph critic, Wittertainment guest-host and all-round Studio Ghibli expert Robbie Collin, given the choice to bring with him any Ghibli film to discuss, Robbie selected Isao Takahata’s Only Yesterday, an animated drama aimed squarely at an adult audience. One of the Studio’s deepest cuts, Only Yesterday was a box office hit on its initial release in Japan, but it wasn’t released in the USA for 25 years. The film is as experimental, poignant and pointed in its message as you’d expect from Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya) - and has over the years become a firm fan favourite. This episode brings this initial volume of Ghibliotheque to a close. Thank you for listening, it’s been a real adventure, hasn’t it? If you’ve enjoyed the show and would like to hear more episodes of Michael and Jake diving deep in to Studio Ghibli then make sure you tweet: @MichaelJLeader – Michael@jakehcunningham – Jake@robbiereviews - RobbieShow notes:Read Robbie’s tribute to Isao Takahata here: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/2018/04/06/studio-ghibli-isao-takahata-brought-indescribable-beauty-everyday/ (behind a paywall though)For more details about Film4's Studio Ghibli Season, click here: https://bit.ly/2JYqrBjAdditional production on this episode from Steph Watts - @_stephwatts See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata passed away last month having directed far less features than his better-known (over here anyway) counterpart, Hayao Miyazaki. But here's the little secret: every one of Takahata's films (of which we look at Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko and Only Yesterday) are GREAT.

Episode 11! Part 1 of a 2 part series on the melodramas of the '30's and '50's starting with the films of John M. Stahl. Stahl directed some of the most popular films of the romantic melodrama genre through the 1930's, some of which would go on to be remade in glorious technicolor by Douglas Sirk in the 1950's. He was forgotten in film history for many decades mostly due to the lack of availability of any decent prints. A resurgence of interest in his work was sparked by the Universal Pictures under Laemmle Jr retrospective in MoMA last year. For the first time since their release audiences were able to experience the pristine and slow burning beauty of Stahl's films, where women were the centre of action and interest. We also discuss the other forgotten man of that time, Laemmle Jr. Charles Boyer is discussed in loving detail in our He's a Keeper segment. Sources: An Affair to Remember (1957) Dir. "This is the chronicle of the city of Buczacz, which I have written in my pain and anguish so that our descendants should know that our city was full of Torah, wisdom, love, piety, life, grace, kindness, and charity." So begins Shai Agnon's epic story cycle entitled A City in Its Fullness - a literary memorial to the city of his birth, now called Buchach in Western Ukraine. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Agnon's receipt of the Nobel Prize in Literature (Agnon is the only Hebrew language writer ever to receive the prize), and in honor of the upcoming Jewish fast of Tisha b’Av, host Marcela Sulak reads from a story in this cycle called "Pisces." It's about a householder called Fishl Karp, a portly man who loves food and gets distracted on his way to the synagogue one morning: "He met a fisherman with his net coming from the Strypa. He was stooped under the weight of the net, and the net was shaking itself and its bearer. Fishl looked and saw a fish quivering there in the net. In all his days, Fishl had never seen such a large fish. When his eyes settled down after seeing the new sight, his soul began to quiver with desire to enjoy a meal made from the fish. So great was his appetite that he didn’t ask how such a stupendous fish had found its way into the waters that do not produce large fish. What did Fishl say when he saw the fish? He said, 'The Leviathan knows that Fishl Karp loves large fish and sent him what he loves.'" Hear more about Agnon's life and work in our previous podcast "Only Yesterday." Text: "Pisces." Translated by Jeffrey M. Green in A City in Its Fullness by S. Y. Agnon. Edited by Alan Mintz and Jeffrey Saks. Toby Press, 2016. Only Yesterday, Mia Madre and The Ground We Won are reviewed. With Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Cerise Howard, Thomas Caldwell and Josh Nelson.
Review by Ebony Beaton Studio Ghibli’s lesser known film Only Yesterday is this year celebrating it’s 25th anniversary and is being re-released in Australia. Only Yesterday is unlike other studio Ghibli films. It cuts back the magical and child-like imagination that is usually the main premise within their films. It is a realistic drama, it is made for adults and is particularly aimed at women. It’s set in 1982 and follows Taeko, she is 27 and unmarried, and she grew up and lives and works in Tokyo. She takes a holiday to the countryside to visit the family of her elder brother of her brother-in-law, and is helping them on their organic farm to harvest safflower. She travels on the over night train and on her journey there begins to recall her childhood back in the 1960s. When she arrives at the station she is greeted by her brother in law's second cousin, Toshio, they barely know each other but quickly create a very strong bond. Through the film she finds her self more and more nostalgic of her past and it makes her reflect on her memories, good and bad, the film switches between the present and the past, showing us Taeko’s memories’ about childish romance, puberty and periods and the frustrations of math and boys. The film deals with growing up both as a child and the growing up you do when you’re an adult. One of the most beautiful parts of the film was when Taeko compared her self now and her past self going though puberty to that of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, and how this time in her life and how when she was going though puberty to be the chrysalis stage of the caterpillar to butterfly, which to me is a really important message in how we never stop growing and learning. This film is filled with beautiful poetic imagery like this. The end of the film was particularly moving when Taeko was faced with either staying in the country side or to go back to the city, she boarded the train to go back to Tokyo, but before she reached the next station she was provoked by a vision of her past self as a 10 year old and she knew she belonged to stay in the country side. This film is amazingly beautiful, it speaks to so many themes and issues about growing up and how we never stop growing and how our past informs the present. Only Yesterday is in Japanese with English subtitles, it runs for 1 hour and 58 minutes and opens May 5th and is showing at Nova Cinema in Carlton
