Questions, comments, feedback? Tap here to send us a message!37% of Australia's freshwater species are facing extinction in the next century. In the words of today's guest, Dr. Nick Whiterod, "it is now a conscious decision not to act."Native fish populations in Australia are estimated to be less than 10% of their size pre-colonisation. This country has experienced one of the worst records of recent extinctions worldwide, and many more of our species are predicted to be lost in the near future – not unless we act now. Freshwater species have a disproportionately higher risk of extinction compared to terrestrial and marine counterparts, but are often overlooked, with few aware of how much trouble they're really in. Dr. Nick Whiterod is a leading expert in the field of freshwater species conservation and recovery, and there's no one better to speak with about this great challenge than him.Nick is the driving force behind the Science Program at the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth (CLLMM) Research Centre based in Goolwa, South Australia. He is an ecologist with over two decades of experience, conserving and researching freshwater species and ecosystems across South Australia and Australia-side. He has conducted several successful reintroduction projects, contributed to the national listing of more than 50 freshwater fish and crayfish, and actively worked to understand and conserve freshwater fish across Australia, including in the Mt Lofty Ranges and the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth region. Nick was a 2018 Churchill Fellow and recently received the 2023 Unsung Hero of South Australian Science. In today's show, we unravel the ecological treasures of this breathtaking Ramsar site at the Murray-Darling Basin's end. Nick opens up about the region's unique freshwater ecosystems and the pressing challenges they face, from reduced water flows due to upstream extraction to the historical necessity of barrages that protect the freshwater supply. We discuss the significance of environmental water flows and the complexities of managing water resources across jurisdictional boundaries; dive deep into the urgent need for conservation and the threats faced by Australia's native freshwater species; highlight the importance of First Nations collaboration in conservation efforts, and more.If you enjoyed this episode, please consider leaving a rating and review wherever you listen to your podcasts.✉️ Subscribe to our newsletter (no spam, we promise!) to keep up with new episodes of the show!

The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads". __________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "Stop Making Sense" findet ihr hier: https://www.swr.de/swr1/rp/meilensteine/swr1-meilensteine-talking-heads-david-byrne-stop-making-sense-100.html __________ Über diese Songs von "Stop Making Sense" wird im Podcast gesprochen: (13:10) – "Psycho Killer"(31:27) – "Burning Down The House"(35:45) – "Girlfriend Is Better"(41:44) – "Life During Wartime"(52:22) – "Take Me To The River" __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? On a crisp Friday morning by the banks of the Cotter river in January 2024, Siwan sat down with Senator David Pocock, the ACT's first independent senator and environmental advocate, to discuss what drives him and what he cares about; his journey towards and inside the world of politics and government; his life growing up in Zimbabwe and career in professional rugby, and more. This is a reflective and insightful conversation, one which reveals a down-to-earth and honest man who deeply cares about the environment we call home.Siwan and David also discuss the Upper Murrumbidgee, or 'The Forgotten River' — a stretch of river left behind by Federal and NSW water management reforms. As a result, between 90% and 99% of the headwaters of the Murrumbidgee is captured by the Snowy Hydro Scheme each year, which leads to crises like in 2019 when the river almost entirely dried up except for a few algae-choked pools. The ARRC has been raising awareness about the Forgotten River for a couple of years, and those efforts were rewarded in November 2023 when an agreement was reached between the Albanese Government and Senator Pocock, which ensured a combined $50m of funding for the health of the river, as well as reviews of key legislative documents regarding the regulation of the Upper 'Bidgee. This was a great success for the health of the river and a collaborative effort across the board. The Upper Murrumbidgee still needs more water, but we are hopeful that this agreement sets in motion the ability for these flows to be provided in future years.***If you enjoyed this episode, please consider leaving a rating and review wherever you listen to your podcasts.Check out the episode show notes: https://arrc.au/senator-david-pocock-being-part-of-a-larger-story/Learn more about the Australian River Restoration Centre: arrc.au

In today's episode, Siwan talks with Richard Swain, a Dabee man of the Wiradjuri nation and a river adventure guide (Alpine River Adventures) in the Snowy Mountains, in Kozciuszko National Park. Richard grew up learning the history of the Australian landscape from his father, and his grandfather taught him how Aboriginal peoples moved through and respected country.  Richard has a long history of volunteering on local environmental and community projects and has a first-hand understanding of the huge impact feral animals have on Australia's natural environment. Richard is an ambassador for the Invasive Species Council, helping to raise the profile of the role of Indigenous peoples in caring for Country and protecting it from invasive species. His life is now dedicated to protecting the environment from the impacts of modern society. Content Warning: This conversation includes a description of a massacre of Aboriginal people from 17:00 - 17:26 that may be of concern for some listeners. This conversation covers a wide range of topics, ranging from Richard's experience with advocacy, the problem with the culture of modern Australia, and how indigenous and non-indigenous Australians can move forward together towards a lore of restoration — as Richard puts it, "Country is crying out for good people". It's a hard-hitting conversation at points, but one which provokes us and challenges us to improve, for the sake of Country and for ourselves. To view this episode's show notes, visit https://arrc.au/country-is-crying-out-for-good-people-with-richard-swain-episode-23.To learn more about the Australian River Restoration Centre, visit arrc.au.

The opposite of Artificial Intelligence is Natural Stupidity. Being stupid is our choice and no one else's, so why do we choose to be stupid? As children we have an insatiable hunger to know things. It seems kids want to know everything. Then we get older, instead of pursuing knowledge, we just copy other people's thoughts and stop thinking for ourselves. Truth is, knowledge comes from reading and studying as well as experiences. This means that our knowledge is just that...OURS. Sometimes people disagree with us because they don't have the same experiences we do. Their knowledge is not ours. The song we use in this episode is "Take Me To The River" by The Talking Heads. Syleena Johnson's highly anticipated book shares her compelling journey toward self-love and discovery, while chronicling her battles with body image birthed in adolescence and carried throughout her music career. An ode to obstacles faced and conquered, this self-help book sets an indelible tone for reflection, resurgence, and redemption.Syleena Johnson is one of those undeniable talents whose unfaltering truth shines through every note she sings. Undoubtedly one of the best singers of her generation, Johnson has collaborated with everyone from Kanye West and Common to Anthony Hamilton and R. Kelly. In recent years she has enjoyed mainstream exposure appearing on such television shows as TV One’s “R&B Divas: Atlanta” and WE TV’s “Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars” and as of September 18, 2017 Syleena is featured on the new TEGNA Media/ TV One daily live talk show “Sister Circle.” On November 10, 2017 Shanachie Entertainment will release REBIRTH OF SOUL, a recording that Syleena has long wanted to bring to fruition. Conceived and produced by her father, the legendary soul/blues singer and producer Syl Johnson, whose original hit version of “Take Me To The River” was covered by Al Green and Talking Heads. Everyone from Jay-Z and Kanye West to Wu-Tang and Usher has sampled Syl Johnson’s recordings. REBIRTH OF SOUL features Syleena Johnson’s searing interpretations of classic R&B songs, mainly from the Fifties and Sixties, recorded in real time with live musicians just the way “real music” used to be made. As Syl Johnson notes,“people don’t use live musicians much anymore; but every musician brings his heart to a recording.” Recording in Chicago, Syl Johnson’s long-time base and Syleena’s hometown, the sessions include musicians who played on hit R&B recordings there over the years and a majority of the album features songs associated with Chicago artists, songwriters or record labels. Syleena shares, “The inspiration behind REBIRTH OF SOUL is my father. I wanted to honor him and classic soul music in a time when auto tune and electronic beats reign supreme. While I am not against this kind of creative musicianship, there is so much more to the real thing. True Soul music tells stories…stories that can heal a nation.”As an artist who came of age during the 90’s hip-hop era and broke through in the early 2000’s, Syleena had never actually recorded live in the studio previously. “The difference with this album,” Syleena relates, “ is that I had the opportunity to record with live instrumentation as well as actual musicians from the (classic) era. On this album I didn’t write any of the songs and it was the first time in a while that I worked with my father. I had to tap into the soul and spirit of the era of each song to bring authenticity to the project.” The songs on REBIRTH OF SOUL, hand-picked by Syl Johnson, run the gamut from lesser-known gems such as Betty Everett’s “There’ll Come A Time,” Syl Johnson’s “We Did It” and Bettye Swann’s “Make Me Yours” to such landmark hits as “Chain of Fools” and “I’d Rather Go Blind,” done definitively by Aretha Franklin and Etta James respectively. Syleena manifests an uncanny ability to get inside of each song, digging deep to deliver passionate performances that bring a fresh spark to even the best known selections. “For each song I channeled the emotions of the record,” Syleena confides. “I put myself in the mind of each storyteller and in doing this I was able to merge myself into the story of each record. This is how I was able to put my own personal stamp on each record.”"The Weight is Over" is now available through Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HRQM89Z/https://www.syleenamusic.comhttp://www.sheleanlife.comSocial media @syleenajohnson*Thank you Syleena for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with me. "I'm a fighter. I'm never gonna give up. But it's like I just don't know if I can keep going... But you have to find a way to keep going, no matter what." On this episode, I’ve got my interview with singer/songwriter Ashton Riker. I say this a lot... but this may be my new favorite episode. Ashton was so great in this interview. I felt like he and I just clicked, which in my opinion, always makes things much more organic and natural. Now having said that, this is where I will formally warn you that there is a fair amount of language in this episode. Don't say I didn't warn you! Ashton was born and raised in Memphis and was recently a part of “Take Me To The River: Live!” a tour that was in conjunction with the award-winning documentary “Take Me To The River.” Ashton and I talk about everything from how he got his start, life on the road, songwriting, depression, anxiety, being a caregiver, success, motivation, and even...haunted hotels. I am so proud of this episode! Check it out!
