Welcome, everyone, to another episode of The Tearsheet Podcast, where we explore financial services together with an eye on technology, innovation, emerging models, and changing expectations. I'm Tearsheet's editor in chief, Zack Miller. Actually, I'm your co-host today – joining me is Rabab Ahsan, Tearsheet reporter. Rabab has been doing a bang-up job recently covering the intersection of Gen Z and financial services, from her reporting to her contributions to our 2 seminal reports on the subject which you can find at steezlife.co. One place Gen Z diverges from generations that came before it is in investing. For example, research shows that younger folks invest for completely different reasons than previous generations. It's not about financial status for Gen Z – it's about a better quality of life. Values also play a big role in investment decisions, as Gen Z tends to put its money where their values are. Actually, there are a whole bunch of important topics here that require some understanding if you want to do better providing investment services and advice to Gen Z. To do that, Rabab and I are joined by Dr. Julie O'Brien, head of behavioral science, and Rob Haworth, senior investment strategist at US Bank. We dig deeper, discussing recent research Dr. O'Brien authored that looks to better understand the investment needs and behaviors of Gen Z. It's an interesting conversation – glad you're joining us. And, speaking of joining us, Tearsheet is hosting our first symposium on Gen Z and financial services. It's March 7 in NYC at Mastercard's Tech Hub. It's an intimate group of financial services professionals really exploring what it means to build lovable financial products and services for Gen Z. You can find more information about it on our website – just click on events and apply for a ticket. Here's our conversation with US Bank's Dr. Julie O'Brien and Rob Haworth.

Gen Z, the generation born between 1997 and 2010, has a distinct reputation different from baby boomers, Gen X, and millennials. Exactly what the differences are and why they exist is a growing area of interest in research. For example, a new report from the American Enterprise Institute's Survey Center on American Life analyzes data collected from a survey of baby boomers, Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z about their experiences during adolescence. One finding is that Gen Z—or Zoomers—are less likely to hold a part-time job, attend religious services, have a romantic relationship, and use drugs. They also spend more time online, are more likely to identify as LGBTQ, and report being more lonely than previous generations. One factor behind these differences–and a defining difference itself between Gen Z and the adolescent experiences of previous generations–is the role and use of technology. Gen Z has never known a world without social media and smartphones. Seven out of 10 Zoomers report using social media daily (a number that still seems suspiciously low), and 56% of Gen Z adults report playing video games in the past week. Though increased social media and video game use does not necessarily mean that less time is spent with friends, it typically does. So, it is unsurprising that Gen Z, as a whole, reports greater loneliness and less time spent with friends during their teen years than older generations. Gen Z is also more progressive in political views and more likely to identify as lesbian, bisexual, gay, or trans than previous generations. Today, almost one in four Zoomer adults identifies as LGBTQ, which is about five times more than baby boomers. Additionally, about four in 10 identify as politically liberal, while only 26% identify as politically conservative. Given that virtually every social media platform champions LGBTQ images, behavior, and ideology and that LGBTQ ideology has become a defining creed of left-leaning politics, this is not surprising. Individuals who identify as LGBTQ are celebrated, especially online, whereas those who dissent from the reigning sexual orthodoxies are easily reported and often, quickly deplatformed. Having grown up more online than outside, Zoomers' politics, values, and loyalties have been shaped by the narratives preached in their social media worlds. At the same time, Gen Z avoids some of the risk-taking and moral vices of older groups. Perhaps because they spend so much more time online, only 32% of adult Zoomers reported drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or smoking weed as a teenager, and only 56% reported having a boyfriend or girlfriend. Also, only 58% reported having a part-time job, the lowest number of the four generations surveyed. Less substance abuse is certainly better when considered along with fewer part-time jobs and romantic relationships. This is likely not due to better morals but to an overall aversion to even healthy risk-taking. Finally, though Zoomers are the least likely to attend religious services, the common thread to church attendance across all generations continues to be family life. For all generations, the majority (68%) of those who grew up in a two-parent household, participated in religious life during adolescence, whereas those growing up in a single-parent household were less likely to attend religious services (53%). Among older generations, less troublemaking and risk-taking often coincided with more participation in religious services, but that statistical link is broken when it comes to Zoomers. Whereas 71% of baby boomers attended religious services during their teens, only 52% of Gen Z attended religious services during theirs. Gen Z's generational differences indicate that a shared way of life consisting of both physical presence and family life deeply matters. Unless these things are recovered, decreased religious observance and increased loneliness will only continue. Human beings, no matter the generation to which they belong, are embodied beings. None of us are our avatars, our online personas, or our social media feeds. When our lives are stripped of tangible connections with our neighbors, our neighborhoods, and our families, we lose sight of many things that matter. This Breakpoint was co-authored by Jared Eckert. In this episode, author of well-known books Sex at Dawn and Civilzed to Death, Christopher Ryan, and Dr. Anthony Gustin explore the misconceptions that everything in civilization is better. To do that, they compare our modern Western life to that of an egalitarian hunter-gatherer society and they discuss what our current civilization has right, what's dragging it down, what can be done about it, and more. Chris and Dr. Gustin also answer questions like, are we really better off than previous generations? And, what does it mean to be human? This is one of those episodes that may change what you previously thought and it'll open your eyes to a completely new perspective. You'll also hear these other topics when you check this episode out: Why the statistics aren't all they're cracked up to be Did Chris have an “aha” moment that led him down this path? What does it mean to be human? Chris' thoughts on our current state of agriculture How tech is negatively creeping in like a parasitic infection Are we really better off than previous generations? What hunter-gatherer tribes have shown us Actual objective measures that determine quality of life Do things need to get bad before people look for better alternatives? How our planet's carrying capacity is at its max How Chris balances being social and taking time away from people Other ways you can help contribute to creating a better world Chris also shares his experience buying land with friends to create a community that takes only the best parts of the modern world
When you look at the future, what do you see? Technology and world events have changed the face of business. Companies today face new working environments, cutting-edge communication technologies, and a diverse range of people with different experiences and viewpoints. The future is bright for those with the will to adapt! In this episode of THE POWER OF RE:INVENTION, I bring on Jamie Gutfreund, CMO of Whalar. She's been in and out of the workforce and held multiple high-powered positions for various companies. When she looks at the future, she doesn't feel fear. She sees opportunities. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Listen to your gut. It's an era of opportunity if you know where to look. Change in a company has to happen from the inside. There are more opportunities for everyone, no matter where they are. Fear aversion won't help you adapt. [05:09] Facing Junctures in Life Jamie liked selling but eventually had to leave the workforce to care for her children. Being out of the workforce was fun, but Jamie soon got bored with it. Jumping back into the business world was challenging — finding a job was almost a job in itself. But Jamie wasn't idle — she studied and always followed her gut. [16:32] Aging In vs. Aging Out We're in an era of opportunity for older adults. Maintaining cohesion is a critical skill for someone in a leadership role; older adults tend to have the skill set to do that in hybrid working environments. Younger employees miss out on the contextual mentoring they could have received from a physical office. It can benefit the workforce to have days where everyone comes into a shared workspace. [22:01] Opportunities at Any Age or Stage New technologies and environments allow people to be in the workforce at any age or life stage. Jamie's company works with various people — like fresh graduates, differently-abled creators, and more. [28:36] Navigating Out the Creator Economy There are two camps: future-focused companies and companies unable to adapt. Legacy businesses may find it challenging to navigate the new environment. However, change has to happen from within — there's more to adaptation than hiring outside talent and fresh faces. Jamie is between worlds: she understands traditional businesses and steeped herself in newer technologies and concepts. [34:39] Facing Choices Most companies don't like having to make pivotal choices. However, COVID forced everyone's hand: everyone has had to adapt instead of testing out new things safely. Risk aversion is bad for a company. Success requires going out and learning new things. Today in episode 121, I discuss some scientific evidence of genetic history, how the lifestyle choices and experiences of past generations may induce genetic and epigenetic changes which may be passed along to us. For example, were our parents of a healthy weight, did they drink a lot of alcohol, did they exercise regularly, what was their diet like at the time of conceiving us? It appears that these lifestyle characteristics can result in epigenetic changes which can be passed down to offspring to influence their health. In addition, some people may have fears or feelings that they can't explain; well Charles Darwin wrote of observations in animals how certain fears can be passed down without exposure of the offspring to the parents. May we change the outcomes laid out for us by our genetics? Yes it might be possible. Tune in for more details. Want to buy me a coffee to say thanks for the episode? Amidst today's labor shortage, employers are learning an important truth: we have no “extra” people. Unfortunately, many qualified workers are “hidden” from real consideration for jobs by ineffective artificial intelligence hiring screens, overly strict credentialing requirements, or a narrowmindedness from companies on how seemingly disparate skills could might serve to strengthen business operations. These barriers contribute to the existence of 27 million “hidden workers” in the US, including mothers returning to the workforce, those with physical disabilities, neurodivergent workers, and veterans. To discuss this problem, I am joined by AEI non-Resident Fellow and Harvard Business School professor Joe Fuller. In addition to his work at AEI, Joe co-leads the Managing the Future of Work project, and has published reports through HBS as well as numerous popular press outlets.
