Advanced airline systems technology with the head of DataArt’s Aviation Practice. In the news: cloud-based air traffic control in the Washington, D.C., area; thousands of flights delayed and canceled after FAA and NATS system failures; safety reforms after the DCA midair collision; and the loss of a new Cessna Citation Latitude. Guest Tim McMullen is Vice President, Business Development, Aviation and Travel Technology, at DataArt. That company provides data and analytics services, artificial intelligence and machine learning services, cloud migration and optimization, and custom software engineering to the aviation and other industries. Tim leads DataArt's Aviation Practice and has spent nearly twenty years working with airlines worldwide on technology, from start-ups to the largest network carriers. He has provided clients with solutions in reservations, customer care, loyalty, network planning, pricing/RM, airline operations, dispatch, crew planning and scheduling, airport operations, aircraft maintenance, and cargo. Aviation News FAA Preparing to Field SMART in Washington, DC in First Operational Deployment The Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories, or SMART, is characterized by the FAA SMART Fact Sheet [PDF] as “a cloud-based platform system that enhances existing FAA air traffic management systems. It provides air traffic control and aircraft operators with a shared, data-driven view of the National Airspace before flights depart.” Using AI, SMART analyzes airline schedules, weather, airport capacity, airspace conditions, and operational constraints to forecast traffic flows and identify potential conflicts before they occur. It gives the FAA, airlines, and operators a shared, continuously updated view to coordinate efficient routes and departure times as conditions change. The FAA is preparing to put SMART into operational use in the Washington, DC area in the system’s first operational fielding. SMART is part of the Flow Management Data and Services (FMDS) platform being built by Air Space Intelligence (ASI). The company says the award covers both systems and is worth US$875m over 12 years. When the system tried to switch to the backup, it discovered that a construction crew had cut the fiber-optic line. ​FlightAware reported that more than 5,600 US flights were delayed or canceled. The three New York-area airports accounted for 1,200 of those flights. UK air traffic controller blames a millisecond-software glitch for flight cancellations On September 8, 2026, over 2,000 flights in and out of the United Kingdom were canceled. A preliminary report faults a software glitch with NATS, formerly known as National Air Traffic Services. The system, which allocates codes, allows air traffic controllers to identify flights on radar. Hundreds of thousands of travelers were impacted, and it took days to fully restore operations. Families of D.C. midair crash victims press Congress for aviation safety reforms Families of the victims of the January 2025 mid-air collision between an American Eagle CRJ700 commuter jet and a U.S. Army helicopter near Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) are looking for Congressional action. Some of the family members are concerned that Congress isn't up to the task. The father of one victim referred to it as “fading urgency” where  “Something everyone agrees will make people safer gets caught in process, objections, exceptions and delay until you look up and an entire generation has passed. Flight 5342 cannot follow that path.” FAA, Army move to implement spirit of NTSB recommendations after DCA mid-air The NTSB issued recommendations in its February 2026 final report on the DCA mid-air collision. These were directed at “deficiencies with area helicopter routes, Army helicopter operations in the DCA area, and the conduct of air traffic control — both in the DCA tower and the Potomac Consolidated TRACON (PCT) Terminal Radar Approach Control, and the management of both those facilities by the FAA's Air Traffic Organization (ATO).” The NTSB directed 33 recommendations to the FAA. Eleven 11 are classified as “Open—Unacceptable Response.” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford issued a formal reply to the NTSB saying most would be implemented or resolved by the end of May 2027, when the FAA intends to issue already scheduled updates to manuals, policies, and procedures. Among those recommendations is a mandate for ADS-B In with cockpit traffic display and audible alerts where ADS-B Out is already required. The ROTOR and Alert Acts in Congress would institute an ADS-B In mandate, but neither had cleared both chambers before Congress at this time. Both Pilots of Crashed Bizjet Accused of Being Intoxicated On September 14, 2026, a Cessna 680A Citation Latitude jet, recently delivered to an Istanbul charter company, departed the runway at Misrata International Airport in Libya upon landing. The pilots got the jet back on the runway, but not after damaging the landing gear. The plane caught fire and was destroyed. The two pilots and the cabin attendant escaped unharmed. The pilots are in a Libyan jail and accused of being intoxicated. Você pode achar que são apenas inquietações de adolescentes, mas muita gente grande também tem estas mesmas dúvidas: Será que vou conseguir ser fiel até o fim? Será que Deus vai me aceitar se eu não fizer todas as mudanças que devo fazer? É aquilo que a igreja ensina ou o que eu penso que a igreja ensina sobre salvação que me deixa intranquilo? Minha conversão foi genuína? Vou sobreviver no tempo de angústia? Pense agora comigo: Será que Deus nos convida para nos aproximarmos do trono da graça, como diz o verso de hoje, sem nos oferecer nenhuma palavra de boas-vindas ao chegarmos lá? Será que ele nos abandonaria, deixando-nos sem saber se fomos aceitos ou não? Muitos comparam a caminhada cristã em direção ao Céu à travessia de um equilibrista sobre um cabo de aço, cuidando para não cair nem para a direita nem para a esquerda. Que paz ou segurança pode existir no coração dessa pessoa, se sempre está preocupada em não cair? Por que colocamos um tema como esse, tão bonito e essencial para uma vida espiritual feliz, dentro de uma moldura de incerteza, quando a Bíblia está cheia de promessas maravilhosas sobre a certeza da salvação? “Sei em quem tenho crido” (2Tm 1:12). “Eu sei que o meu Redentor vive” (Jó 19:25). “Não há condenação para os que estão em Cristo Jesus” (Rm 8:1). “Se Deus é por nós quem será contra nós” (Rm 8:31). “Aproximemo-nos de Deus com um coração sincero e com plena convicção de fé” (Hb 10:22). Se eu perguntasse: “Você está seguro de sua salvação?”, quantos não tropeçariam nas respostas: “Estou me preparando”; “Estou tentando”. Fanny Crosby escreveu mais de oito mil cânticos e hinos, durante seus 95 anos de vida. Um de seus hinos mais apreciados fala da certeza da salvação: “Que segurança! By praying "Your will be done," we are aligning ourselves to become settled and pleased with whatever manner our loving Father has decided that it is best to bless us, and we desire to attain full acceptance and genuine thankfulness. 1. Jesus taught that our Father guides us through prayer – so that prayer is a large part of discovering God's will for us. (v.10b) 2. Jesus showed us by His own example that our Father guides us through both prayer and through His Word. (v.10b) 3. What helps us to keep on accepting God's will, whenever it is difficult for us to embrace, is to keep on speaking to our Father about it, and to keep aligning our attitudes to become more grateful and more welcoming toward the wisdom of our Father's will and His timing. RM is one of Tāmaki's wonderful artist-run spaces, spanning a nearly three decade history of supporting local emerging artists. Making it the longest running artist-run-space here in Aotearoa, being established in 1997. With the gallery moving through various iterations and spaces, previously named rm3, rm212, rm401, and rm103, shifting and evolving as the initiative moved throughout Tāmaki. Seeking to engage a wide range of practices, and modes of presentation that are not as easily accessible within Tāmaki. RM's current pop up exhibition THE ARCHIVE located offsite from the gallery, Just beyond the Beresford entrance of the Karanga-a-hape station, with support from the Karangahape business association, Auckland transport, Auckland council, and Creative New Zealand. The exhibition itself pulls on RM's extensive archival material, presenting a range of pieces and ephemera from RMs own archive. Showcasing the gallery's rich history as an artist-run-space, as well placing these various archival materials in a space of re-invigoration. Asking us to not only view the archive as a form of documentation, but as an active site of discovery that plays a vital role within the current arts community and beyond.  Maya caught up with one of the current members of the RM cooperative, Taarn Scott about the Galleries pop up exhibition, as well as RMs overall exhibitions and events planned for the Karangahape Art Weekend.

Y el Evangelio de Mateo, con su larga genealogía, nos muestra que Dios teje su plan de salvación a través de la historia humana, en la paciencia de las generaciones, hasta llegar a María y a José, a través de quienes el Hijo de Dios se hace carne. Tres lecciones guían nuestra reflexión: la certeza de la llamada de Dios en la historia, la confianza en su designio de amor que todo lo ordena al bien, y la fe que acoge el misterio de la Encarnación.

Nós somos igrejaAmar a igreja é consequência natural de passar tempo com Jesus. Quanto mais contemplamos Cristo, mais aprendemos a amar aquilo que Ele ama. A igreja é preciosa para Jesus e, por isso, precisamos pedir ao Espírito Santo revelação para compreendermos quem ela é e quem somos como parte dela.Só é possível conhecer verdadeiramente a igreja por revelação divina. Na conversão de Paulo, Jesus perguntou: “Por que me persegues?”, embora Paulo estivesse perseguindo os discípulos. Cristo se identifica com Seu corpo. Por isso, não podemos dizer que amamos Jesus enquanto desprezamos, evitamos ou rejeitamos os irmãos. Servir a igreja é servir o próprio Senhor.¹A igreja é o povo comprado pelo sangue de Jesus para ser família de Deus: aqueles que creram em Sua morte e ressurreição e confessaram Seu senhorio. Não apenas frequentamos a igreja; nós somos igreja. Fomos chamados para fora do mundo e para dentro de Deus, juntos.O objetivo da igreja não é produzir lucro financeiro ou emocional, mas glorificar a Deus. Nossa vida encontra seu propósito quando expressamos Jesus e proclamamos Seu Evangelho. A igreja funciona como família porque Deus é Pai. Por isso, precisamos romper distâncias entre gerações, acolher os mais novos, caminhar com os mais velhos e construir relacionamentos que não sejam limitados apenas a pessoas parecidas conosco.²A Escritura também apresenta a igreja como casa espiritual, sacerdócio, família, noiva e corpo. Somos pedras vivas e também sacrifícios vivos. Culto não é apenas receber Palavra, cantar ou participar de uma reunião; é oferecer nossa própria vida a Deus.³A igreja se expressa de maneira ampla, na cidade e também nas casas. Deus ama o ambiente da casa e da mesa, onde pessoas podem ser conhecidas, acolhidas e cuidadas. É também na igreja que descobrimos nosso chamado específico. Não nos autoproclamamos ministros; servimos, experimentamos, aprendemos, somos corrigidos e, em comunhão com os irmãos, o Espírito Santo vai revelando nossa parte no corpo. Caráter é inegociável, mas desempenho pode ser aperfeiçoado. Não precisamos esperar pelo futuro: somos igreja hoje.A mesa do Senhor nos lembra que não fomos feitos para viver individualmente. A ceia aponta para uma vida de acolhimento, espera, dependência, perdão e pertencimento. Precisamos aprender a andar no passo do irmão mais fraco, abrir espaço para outros, pedir conselho e reconhecer que dependemos uns dos outros.⁴Jesus amou até o fim, mesmo sabendo que seria traído. Também receberemos feridas dos irmãos, mas temos em Cristo um depósito abundante de graça e perdão. Onde o pecado abundou, a graça superabundou. A igreja é o lugar onde podemos caminhar na luz, ser restaurados, exercer o ministério da reconciliação e, juntos, anunciar Jesus ao mundo.⁵Perguntas para reflexão:Tenho amado a igreja como Jesus a ama?Existe algum irmão que tenho dificuldade de reconhecer como parte preciosa do corpo de Cristo?Tenho vivido como igreja ou apenas frequentado reuniões?Tenho construído relacionamentos com pessoas de outras idades e gerações?Estou servindo suficientemente para que meu chamado seja reconhecido e desenvolvido no corpo?Tenho acolhido, esperado e caminhado no ritmo dos irmãos?Minhas decisões demonstram que realmente dependo do corpo de Cristo?Tenho oferecido aos irmãos o mesmo perdão que recebi de Jesus?¹ At 9:3-5; Mt 16:15-17.² At 20:28; Ef 2:19; 1Co 10:31.³ 1Pe 2:5; Rm 12:1; 1Co 12:12-27.⁴ 1Co 11:17-33; Rm 12:4-5.⁵ Jo 13:1; Rm 5:20; 1Jo 1:7.

Chamados para ser sal, fermento e luzDeus não prometeu que Seus filhos viveriam sem problemas, mas nunca os deixa sem direção. E a direção que Ele nos dá está ligada à nossa identidade: fomos chamados para ser sal, fermento e luz. Isso não é simplesmente um conjunto de tarefas a realizar; é expressão de quem somos em Cristo.¹Deus prometeu que a terra se encherá do conhecimento da Sua glória. Essa promessa está diretamente ligada à proclamação do Evangelho, porque Deus estabeleceu uma forma de revelar Sua glória: Jesus Cristo. A boa notícia precisa ser anunciada: Jesus é Deus, se fez carne, morreu, ressuscitou, é o Senhor e voltará. Deus colocou poder nessa mensagem, e fomos chamados para anunciá-la.²Entretanto, antes de qualquer outro chamado, precisamos ter resolvido no coração o chamado principal: somos filhos de Deus. Não pregamos, servimos, perdoamos ou buscamos santidade para nos tornarmos filhos. Nós já fomos recebidos como filhos pela graça e, a partir dessa identidade, expressamos a vida do Pai. Quando isso não está claro, podemos viver como funcionários tentando conquistar aquilo que somente a graça pode nos dar.³Jesus afirma: “Vós sois o sal da terra”. Ele não manda Seus discípulos conquistarem essa identidade; Ele declara quem eles são. O mesmo acontece com o fermento: sua presença pode não chamar atenção, mas seus efeitos são impossíveis de esconder. Não fomos chamados para buscar reconhecimento ou admiração, mas para que, quando as pessoas se aproximem de nós, percebam a presença e a vida de Cristo.⁴Por isso, missões não são apenas uma atividade ou departamento da igreja. A missão de Deus habita em nós porque Cristo habita em nós. Todo discípulo é enviado. Nossa identidade não está na busca por poder, posição ou reconhecimento, mas na autoridade recebida no nome de Jesus.Quando as pessoas olhavam para Cristo, viam a revelação do Pai. Também fomos chamados para revelar quem o Pai é. Isso não acontece somente nos nossos acertos ou nos momentos em que parecemos fortes. Muitas vezes, Deus é revelado justamente quando reconhecemos nosso pecado, nos arrependemos e permitimos que Sua luz alcance nossas fraquezas. Não precisamos ser pessoas de aparência impecável; precisamos ser homens e mulheres verdadeiros, transformados por Jesus.⁵Também fomos chamados para ser o toque do Pai na terra. Nossas mãos podem acolher, servir e alcançar pessoas. Nossa vida pode mostrar que transformação é possível. Podemos dizer: “Olhe para aquilo que Cristo está fazendo em mim; Ele também pode transformar você”.Ser cheio do Espírito Santo precisa se transformar em prática. O Espírito não nos enche apenas para uma experiência interior, mas para transbordarmos em palavras, serviço, oração, amor e proclamação. Quem é você?Nossa identidade não é definida por profissão, função, aparência, temperamento, passado, traumas ou sentimentos. Em Cristo, sabemos quem somos: pecadores salvos pela graça, filhos de Deus. Identidade não se cria nem se conquista; é recebida. Por isso, nossa oração é que Deus ilumine os olhos do nosso coração para enxergarmos aquilo que Ele já nos deu em Cristo.¹Vivemos em constante luta entre excessos e carências porque não fomos feitos para encontrar nossa definição neste mundo. O perigo está em permitir que nossas experiências, imaginação, traumas e a cultura formem conceitos que passam a dirigir nosso comportamento. Um conceito equivocado produz frustração. Para corrigir nossos conceitos, precisamos de uma referência verdadeira: aquilo que Deus pensa.²Arrependimento é concordar com Deus. Não significa necessariamente gostar de imediato do que Ele diz, mas reconhecer que os Seus pensamentos são mais altos que os nossos e mudar de direção. Precisamos perguntar: o que penso sobre beleza, riqueza, segurança, saúde, sucesso e descanso é realmente o que Deus pensa? Quando nossos conceitos entram em conflito com os de Deus, somos chamados a abandonar os nossos e concordar com Ele.³O mundo procura nos conformar aos seus padrões, inclusive por aquilo que vemos e consumimos. Aos poucos, podemos absorver conceitos sem perceber e construir nossa vida sobre eles. Deus, porém, se importa com nosso estilo de vida. Nem tudo que precisa mudar é necessariamente pecado; há escolhas, ritmos e hábitos que precisam ser ajustados para que vivamos de acordo com a identidade que recebemos dele.⁴Também precisamos restaurar nosso relacionamento com os mandamentos. Eles não foram dados para conquistarmos uma identidade, mas para expressarmos quem já somos como povo de Deus. O mandamento revela características do próprio Deus e, ao obedecê-lo pela graça, nossa vida se aproxima da expressão da identidade que Ele nos deu. A graça não nos libera para pecar; ela nos capacita a obedecer.⁵Por isso, não basta ouvir. Precisamos praticar. A Palavra recebida deve se tornar vida, obediência e serviço. Não estamos reunidos apenas para assistir, mas para ministrar uns aos outros, acolher pessoas no coração e cooperar com aquilo que o Espírito Santo está fazendo na igreja.  PHP Podcast – July 16, 2026 Hosts: Joe Ferguson, Sara Golemon, and Holly Schilling Joe hosts with Sarah and Holly while running on no sleep. The PHP Tech 2027 CFP opens, a fake PHP 9 pitch appears, we crown Holly the accidental main character of internals, and everyone agrees dark mode flashing white is a war crime. PHP Tech 2027 CFP Is Open (And Yes, the Year Is Right This Time) The big news kicking off the show is that the PHP Tech CFP for 2027 is live and open. You can find it over at Sessionize under php-tech-2027, and unlike a certain demo from the previous week, the date on it is actually correct. There was a brief moment where it displayed 2007, but the team fixed that rather quickly, so credit where credit is due. The crew marveled at the fact that we are somehow less than six months out from 2027, which spiraled into a conversation about kids getting learner’s permits, full beards showing up on children who were toddlers just yesterday, and whether anyone’s offspring might actually submit a talk. Helldivers came up. Freedom was spread. And there was a gentle suggestion that SoCalKid and their newly engaged fiancé should be sent the CFP URL immediately. Meanwhile, PHP Tech 2026 videos are rolling out on PHP Tech TV. There are currently 37 available with more still processing thanks to some technical and room issues at the event. Several talks are completely free, including Joe’s talk on modernizing DevOps, Kaylin’s “Modernize Your Old School Endpoints with HTMX,” and both of Ben Ramsey’s talks. Working Groups, Discord, and the People Who Actually Care The conversation turned to the internals process and Ben Ramsey’s working group proposal on the internals mailing list, which the crew encouraged everyone to actually read. The idea of giving working groups some autonomy and even decision-making power drew broad agreement as a way to produce more fully-fleshed RFCs rather than one person’s implementation of a giant feature. A recurring point of confusion is the reference to “Discord conversations” in RFCs. There is no official PHP.net Discord, but phpc.chat will get you to the Discord (and previously the bridged IRC). The PHP Internals channel is where a lot of discussion happens, though far from the only place, and there are also the PHP Foundation and new Foundation Ambassadors channels. Big appreciation went out to the moderators keeping that Discord spam-free and troll-free, with a special shout to Tiffany, who is an absolute machine at helping people, pointing them in the right direction, and posting top-tier cat pictures in the pet flexing channel. The recurring theme: decisions are made by the people who show up. Silence is acquiescence, and if you have issues, speak up. Holly famously just showed up in internals one day, started talking, and they let her stay. This Week in Internals and the Co-Scientist Show Joe wanted to highlight Artisan Build’s YouTube channel, specifically their “This Week in Internals” videos. They are fantastic recaps of what’s happening in the internals world, complete with a very light sprinkling of extremely dry comedic timing that lands perfectly. The videos break down email threads and RFCs into easily digestible summaries of what people are arguing over, then poke a little fun at the sillier arguments. A weekly recap drops regularly and it’s consistently great content for anyone curious about internals. The crew was also impressed by the host’s ability to nail every name pronunciation on what seems like the first try, which spiraled into Holly’s confession that she has a hard memory limit on names learned after kindergarten. Anyone new is simply “out of bounds.” Holly’s Fake PHP 9 Pitch: Structs, Modules, and Surfaces Holly walked through a blog post on eventuallywrong.com featuring a fake PHP 9 pitch full of flagship features she’s prototyped. It kicked off with extensions, which she discovered didn’t exist while trying to build the Longhorn app in native PHP, landing her at the top of that internals video. Next came structs, which started as an attempt to build tuples (turns out full structs were easier). They’re Swift-style value types with strong typing, and after some grumbling at Larry, she reworked things to support interfaces and traits, leaning into composition over inheritance. Modules got the PHP-style treatment: a simple module definition, a public interface declaration, and a new `internal` visibility level that lets members be accessed within the same module. No autoloader modifications required, and reflection remains the escape hatch as always. Finally, surfaces — a keyword that adds a perpendicular-to-visibility scope. A method can belong to a surface, and callers simply declare they want to use that surface of the class. Holly performance-tested it: no impact if unused, minimal impact if used. She also spent a good chunk of the show against friend classes, arguing they’re leaky, unrestricted, and if you’re going to hand out full access to your privates, you shouldn’t have marked them private in the first place. Release Management, Version Stats, and Upgrade Paths Holly is a first-time PHP 8.6 release manager alongside Matteo Beccati, with veteran Daniel Scherzer (also on 8.5) rounding out the team. She stepped down from RM in a prior election because others wanted the work — a reminder that people stepping up in open source is a rarity worth celebrating. Release management, she noted, is less a social job and more about moving data at the right time and signing things. The July 2026 PHP version stats got a thumbs up. Looking at the trends, 8.5 is clearly on the rise, 8.4 climbing slightly, 8.3 starting to trend down, and 8.2 falling harder — exactly the curve you want, with the vast majority sitting inside the support window. Joe shared that upgrading apps from PHP 7 to 8.3/8.4/8.5 has been a much easier lift than the older 7.x hops, thanks to a more consistent release cadence and better deprecation guidance. Holly pushed back on the idea that 5.6-to-7 was ever hard, while Joe pointed out the real pain came from jumping ancient 5.0/5.1 codebases straight to 7 back before Claude existed. There was also a very in-depth debugging tangent about an opcache build flag no longer being needed on 8.5. Accessibility, Dark Mode Crimes, and the JetBrains Survey The JetBrains State of PHP survey is open, and everyone should go take it — there’s even a chance to win one of five vouchers. This led to a discussion about whether JetBrains usage is being decimated by AI tooling, with Holly living almost entirely in the terminal with Claude Code these days while Joe remains loyal to PHPStorm and PyCharm. Sarah, who is going blind and is not joking about it, kicked off a passionate segment on accessibility. Test your apps with a screen reader. Respect font scaling and contrast (F0F0F0 text on white is a genuine crime). Respect the OS toggles for reduced motion, because autistic users and others depend on them and apps routinely ignore them. The crew then united around dark mode etiquette: the only reasonable default is system-selected, and the white flash between two dark-mode pages is caused by JavaScript-based theme switching instead of sane CSS selectors. It is, universally agreed, the worst. The episode closed on eye-tracking privacy (Apple Vision Pro good, Oculus terrifying), heat maps, and a laptop-camera-covering tangent that got appropriately unhinged before Joe called it on that bombshell. But some folks, of course, feel uncertain about such patriotism. Don't our countries have a lot of problems? Isn't our eternal citizenship in Heaven? Let's explore how Scripture endorses “the glory and honor of the nations.” And let's recall how fantastical stories illustrate this good love of our country.

My friend Hunter Knott (UVU grad in computer science, RM) joins us to share his story growing up and starting to hear stuff about gay people (during his high school years), going on a mission (at the start of COVID, getting reassigned), and then after his mission starting to consider “he might not be straight”. Hunter talks about starting to come to terms with his sexual orientation in 2022 with a powerful journey entrée—the shock he felt—and the answer of comfort. Hunter talks about enrolling in the UVU LGBT Institute class and how helpful/spiritually uplifting it is to connect with other LGBTQ members walking this road. Hunter frames this class as the “restoration of His LGBTQ people”. Hunter talks about coming out to his parents (great experience) and his family—including his parents attending Gather. Hunter also talks about the parallels between black Latter-day Saints before 1978 and the current plight of LGBTQ members—super insightful. Hunter talks about dating women and not being able to make that work—and then dating men including his first kiss and involving his family in his dating. Hunter talks about his current steady boyfriend Will and the love/peace he is finding in his life and hopes for their future together—including feeling “called” to continue to attend church as a same-sex married couple. My friend Becca Moore—who had a strong testimony—bravely shares the difficult road she faces as a transgender Latter-day Saint. Being transgender and living authentically has been healing and liberating for Becca—the challenge/pain is not being accepted/supported by the Church or her family. Becca (age 61, four children, 9 grandchildren, RM from South Korea Seoul West mission, grew up in Sandy UT, BYU grad, career in banking) shares the negative impact of the Church's August 2024 transgender restrictions (see https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2024/08/24/new-lds-church-policies/) causing her to feel unsafe at Church and exposing her and other transgender members to humiliation and abuse. Becca talks about being able to attend Relief Society and how that all changed with the new restrictions and other difficult experiences. It is heartbreaking to hear. We both talk about problems with far-right political ideology that has demonized transgender folks—the same heartbreaking historical pattern repeating itself with gay/lesbian folks, blacks, Native Americans, Jews, etc. We talk about Christ's teaching and gospel principles that show us how to love and support our transgender friends. We talk about the need as a church/society to live up to Elder Rasband's invitation to support our transgender friends: “Elder Ronald A. Rasband taught that people who experience transgender feelings need to be encircled in the arms of their Savior and know they are loved. So often the Lord calls on us; He expects us to be His welcoming, loving arms. Our lack of support for you is heartbreaking.
