When the world feels heavy, choosing joy can sound naïve. We think it's the most practical move you can make. In this heartfelt episode, we share how a brutal “year of authenticity” led to a bold decision to claim a “year of joy,” and why that choice reshaped daily life. You'll hear a reading from Small Pearl's Big Wisdom titled We Will Have Joy, then we unpack how gratitude and delight fade without tending, and how to bring them back through simple, repeatable practices. We explore joy as medicine for the soul: the counterweight that steadies your nervous system and expands your perspective during hard seasons. From dance rehearsals that dissolve stress in minutes to tiny present-moment miracles like a dog napping belly-up, we show how nothing outside needs to change for your inner state to shift. Joy doesn't erase facts; it equips you to meet them with more compassion, creativity, and clarity. You'll learn how to set morning intentions, close your day with a quick “what was joyful” check, and use movement, nature, and mindful naming to anchor goodness in real time. This conversation is for anyone who feels stretched thin yet wants a grounded way back to aliveness. We make the case that joy is not a reward for finishing the hard work; it's the fuel that makes the hard work possible. Walk away with practical tools to cultivate joy now, not “someday,” and a gentle nudge to claim even a few drops on the toughest days. On this week's episode of Typology, I'm joined by two remarkable guests who sit right at the intersection of faith and psychology: Dr. Les Parrott, a clinical psychologist and author, and pastor Judah Smith, who brings a preacher's honesty and a comedian's timing to our conversation. Together, they've written a new book called Bad Thoughts: A Preacher and a Shrink's Guide to Reclaiming Your Mind and Soul. It's a lively and deeply honest dialogue between theology and therapy—between the pulpit and the couch. We dive into what Les calls the five “toxic thought patterns” that keep us stuck—guilt, shame, insecurity, entitlement, and unworthiness—and how reframing those internal narratives can lead to genuine healing. Judah opens up with surprising candor about his own inner critic, the pressure of ministry, and why he believes the future of the church might look a lot more like AA than Sunday morning at 10 a.m. It's part Enneagram session (spoiler: Judah's possibly a Seven), part theology class, and part group therapy—equal parts laughter, humility, and grace. You'll hear Les explain why awareness is curative, Judah describe what it's like to feel “freer in his soul,” and me wrestling right alongside them with what it really means to change our minds. If you've ever wondered how psychology and spirituality can work together to transform our lives—and not against each other—this conversation is for you.     ABOUT OUR GUESTS Judah Smith is the lead communicator of Churchome, a thriving community with multiple locations and a global app, known for its cultural relevance and deep love for Jesus. He is the New York Times bestselling author of Jesus Is __. Judah and his wife, Chelsea, live in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Les Parrott is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and psychologist who has been featured on Oprah, CBS This Morning, the Today Show, CNN, and The View, as well as in USA Today and The New York Times. His books, which include Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts and many others, have sold over five million copies. Les and his wife, Leslie, a marriage therapist, are the creators of BetterLove.com, a resource for couples. Les and Leslie live in Seattle, Washington.

When you order your favorite coffee from your local coffee shop, you don't beg the barista to make your coffee, right? That would be weird. You don't shiver in nervousness, worried that you won't get your coffee… you know the barista will get it right. You trust the process, you go about your day, and before you know it—your order's ready. ☕ Well, this is exactly how I like to think of ordering my desires from God/ the Universe. You don't have to plead, chase, or prove your worth to receive what's already yours. You simply place your order energetically, trust that it's being prepared, and stay in the vibration of the woman who knows it's coming. In this episode, I'm breaking down: ✨ How to shift from “needing” energy to “it's already mine” energy ✨ The mindset that magnetizes what you want faster ✨ A mini exercise to help you place your order with certainty It's time to stop begging and start embodying the woman who expects her desires to be fulfilled. Just like your daily latte, your manifestation is already being brewed for you...so relax, trust, and get ready to receive. This episode came through as I landed back home, after a month in Costa Rica, standing on the other side of breaking the structure. What I'm sharing with you today is not just a reflection of that trip, it's what happens when you stop compartmentalizing your life and start living as one continuous frequency. I realized that even while teaching this work, I was still separating the parts of me: the one who surfs and walks barefoot through Costa Rica, and the one who leads and teaches and creates. But there's no separation in truth. There's only one life. Inside this conversation, I share how breaking the structure is not a loss of focus, it's the bridge to expansion. You'll hear how I caught myself slipping back into time, how I chose power over regret, and what it actually means to live from money neutrality, the energetic mountaintop where abundance becomes natural, not chased. We also explore the difference between creating from need versus creating from neutrality, and how to hold higher standards that reflect your new energetic frequency without slipping into control. This is for you if you've been moving through contrast, if things feel both open and uncertain, or if you know you're being restructured into a higher version of yourself. The next round of the Spiritual Investor Mastermind begins October 28th, and this is the final weekend to apply. Day of the Dead is Subversive Spirituality! Long before the arrival of Europeans, some of the Indigenous Mesoamerican traditions of honoring the dead were celebrated with two specific feasts: Mikailwitl (feast of the dead), and Wey Mikailwitl (great feast of the dead). These feasts were celebrated in early August through mid-September. In fact, we are currently in the “month” of Mikailwitl right now, as it began on August 8th or the day Chikome Kozkakwawtli in the ancestral Mexika calendar. These celebrations were dedicated to honoring the dead through dance, song, and offerings of food and drink. Altars and burials were adorned with marigolds, a sacred flower thought to attract the spirits so that they might enjoy the offerings left in their memory.Today, these celebrations have been blended with Catholic traditions, and take place on All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Many think that Mikailwitl and Wey Mikailwitl were absorbed into the Allhallowtide (All Saints Day and All Souls Day) under the direction of the Catholic Church, as these Christian holidays also involve honoring the dead. Unfortunately, this popular claim is often repeated without any evidence to back it up. For example, a column about Dia de Muertos published on the website weareyourvoicemag states “in an attempt to convert the natives to Catholicism, the Spanish colonizers moved the celebration to November 1 and 2 (All Saints Day), which is when we celebrate it currently.”But is this how it really happened? Listen and find out as we explore the different ways that our ancestors negotiated and navigated the colonial process by masking their rituals and ceremonies behind a catholic facade! listener comments?
