How do we handle the sensitive hand-off reports from EMS to the ED?Different aspects, like potentially violent family members, unsafe scenes, are often a critical details that need to be conveyed to the ED but don't have to be announced to everyone in the hand-off report in front of the patientMicah works as a field and ER paramedic. He talks about this situation and how it's going for him. He enjoys the number of resources he has access to in the EDBeing able to see the whole workup and outcome of the patient is a big benefit as well, working in the EDI love it when the EMS crews come back and follow up on their patients, it's a big way to help them improve and learnWe talk about interpersonal conflict on scenesCasey tries to be as friendly as he can and learn everyone's namesIt's easy for all of us to allow our egos to get too out of hand, but we need to treat everyone how we would want to be treatedI talk about some issues I've had with the fire department in the past – sometimes it is all about how you are doing something as opposed to what you are doing in your interactions with other agenciesAt the end of the day, the patient can be affected when we have confrontational scenes so we should always be seeking to avoid thisAlex talks about working 48 hours with his fire crew and responding on scenes with the same crew and how this differs from private ambulance responding with other agencies he may not know very wellCasey talks about how, years ago, the EMS crews had more time to stop by the fire stations and become more familiar with the fire crewsCasey talks about the power of edifying others in our fieldAudrianna talks about a fire crew going above and beyond in the ED as wellWe talk about small things we can all do to go above and beyond our regular tasks, helping families navigate the ED, getting a blanket for someone, cleaning a roomLittle things like this also help you feel better about your job too; they help you remember why you got into medicine in the first placeIt does require you to look beyond yourself to see those opportunitiesSupport the showFull show notes can be found here: Episodes - Practical EMS - Content for EMTs, PAs, ParamedicsMost efficient online EKG course here: Practical EKG Interpretation - Practical EMS earn 4 CME and learn the fundamentals through advanced EKG interpretation in under 4 hours. The difficult admissions are the generally weak, unable to walk with no acute findings. They typically do not uncover any acute findings while in the hospitalIn the ED, we can probably do a better job of involving some of our resources like social work to really give the patient and their family a better understanding of what admission will and won't accomplish for themPart of the America culture does put us in unique situations as the elderly often do not live with their children anymore. Family live far apart and often cannot help each other when in needNo one blames the patient for the situation they are in, but we want to find the best solution to serve themIM deals with the limitations of insurance much more than we do in the EDUltimately, each hospital group needs to establish a culture. What would you want done for your Grandma?A little more work now on these difficult cases in the ED can have the downstream benefit of keeping admission beds open for your next shiftDementia patients with progression of their disease process can be tricky to disposition as wellWe don't do the best job in our society of talking about the normal aging process and how to preserve our patient's dignity and sense of self in that processWe are scared to death of deathWhat is the difference between Observation admission and Inpatient admission? The care is the same regardless of the admission typeAn observation admission is best thought of as a problem that could likely be handled in the outpatient setting if the patient had unfettered access to follow up to PCP and specialistsIn-patient implies that they need resources only found in the hospitalIn-patient vs obs can change over time, if nothing new is found, these statuses can changeSean recommends the book Same As Ever by Morgan Housel He talks about the changes in medicine being so gradual that they don't make headlines, but they are dramatic over time none the lessSupport the showFull show notes can be found here: Episodes - Practical EMS - Content for EMTs, PAs, ParamedicsMost efficient online EKG course here: Practical EKG Interpretation - Practical EMS earn 4 CME and learn the fundamentals through advanced EKG interpretation in under 4 hours. Congrats to Damien on successfully running AI Engineer London! See our community page and the Latent Space Discord for all upcoming events. This podcast came together in a far more convoluted way than usual, but happens to result in a tight 2 hours covering the ENTIRE OpenAI product suite across ChatGPT-latest, GPT-4o and the new o1 models, and how they are delivered to AI Engineers in the API via the new Structured Output mode, Assistants API, client SDKs, upcoming Voice Mode API, Finetuning/Vision/Whisper/Batch/Admin/Audit APIs, and everything else you need to know to be up to speed in September 2024.This podcast has two parts: the first hour is a regular, well edited, podcast on 4o, Structured Outputs, and the rest of the OpenAI API platform. The second was a rushed, noisy, hastily cobbled together recap of the top takeaways from the o1 model release from yesterday and today.Building AGI with Structured Outputs — Michelle Pokrass of OpenAI API teamMichelle Pokrass built massively scalable platforms at Google, Stripe, Coinbase and Clubhouse, and now leads the API Platform at Open AI. She joins us today to talk about why structured output is such an important modality for AI Engineers that Open AI has now trained and engineered a Structured Output mode with 100% reliable JSON schema adherence. To understand why this is important, a bit of history is important:* June 2023 when OpenAI first added a "function calling" capability to GPT-4-0613 and GPT 3.5 Turbo 0613 (our podcast/writeup here)* November 2023's OpenAI Dev Day (our podcast/writeup here) where the team shipped JSON Mode, a simpler schema-less JSON output mode that nevertheless became more popular because function calling often failed to match the JSON schema given by developers. * Meanwhile, in open source, many solutions arose, including * Instructor (our pod with Jason here) * LangChain (our pod with Harrison here, and he is returning next as a guest co-host)* Outlines (Remi Louf's talk at AI Engineer here)* Llama.cpp's constrained grammar sampling using GGML-BNF* April 2024: OpenAI started implementing constrained sampling with a new `tool_choice: required` parameter in the API* August 2024: the new Structured Output mode, co-led by Michelle* Sept 2024: Gemini shipped Structured Outputs as wellWe sat down with Michelle to talk through every part of the process, as well as quizzing her for updates on everything else the API team has shipped in the past year, from the Assistants API, to Prompt Caching, GPT4 Vision, Whisper, the upcoming Advanced Voice Mode API, OpenAI Enterprise features, and why every Waterloo grad seems to be a cracked engineer.Part 1 Timestamps and TranscriptTranscript here.* [00:00:42] Episode Intro from Suno* [00:03:34] Michelle's Path to OpenAI* [00:12:20] Scaling ChatGPT* [00:13:20] Releasing Structured Output* [00:16:17] Structured Outputs vs Function Calling* [00:19:42] JSON Schema and Constrained Grammar* [00:20:45] OpenAI API team* [00:21:32] Structured Output Refusal Field* [00:24:23] ChatML issues* [00:26:20] Function Calling Evals* [00:28:34] Parallel Function Calling* [00:29:30] Increased Latency* [00:30:28] Prompt/Schema Caching* [00:30:50] Building Agents with Structured Outputs: from API to AGI* [00:31:52] Assistants API* [00:34:00] Use cases for Structured Output* [00:37:45] Prompting Structured Output* [00:39:44] Benchmarking Prompting for Structured Outputs* [00:41:50] Structured Outputs Roadmap* [00:43:37] Model Selection vs GPT4 Finetuning* [00:46:56] Is Prompt Engineering Dead?* [00:47:29] 2 models: ChatGPT Latest vs GPT 4o August* [00:50:24] Why API => AGI* [00:52:40] Dev Day* [00:54:20] Assistants API Roadmap* [00:56:14] Model Reproducibility/Determinism issues* [00:57:53] Tiering and Rate Limiting* [00:59:26] OpenAI vs Ops Startups* [01:01:06] Batch API* [01:02:54] Vision* [01:04:42] Whisper* [01:07:21] Voice Mode API* [01:08:10] Enterprise: Admin/Audit Log APIs* [01:09:02] Waterloo grads* [01:10:49] Books* [01:11:57] Cognitive Biases* [01:13:25] Are LLMs Econs?* [01:13:49] Hiring at OpenAIEmergency O1 Meetup — OpenAI DevRel + Strawberry teamthe following is our writeup from AINews, which so far stands the test of time.o1, aka Strawberry, aka Q*, is finally out! There are two models we can use today: o1-preview (the bigger one priced at $15 in / $60 out) and o1-mini (the STEM-reasoning focused distillation priced at $3 in/$12 out) - and the main o1 model is still in training. This caused a little bit of confusion. There are a raft of relevant links, so don't miss:* the o1 Hub* the o1-preview blogpost* the o1-mini blogpost* the technical research blogpost* the o1 system card* the platform docs* the o1 team video and contributors list (twitter)Inline with the many, many leaks leading up to today, the core story is longer “test-time inference” aka longer step by step responses - in the ChatGPT app this shows up as a new “thinking” step that you can click to expand for reasoning traces, even though, controversially, they are hidden from you (interesting conflict of interest…):Under the hood, o1 is trained for adding new reasoning tokens - which you pay for, and OpenAI has accordingly extended the output token limit to >30k tokens (incidentally this is also why a number of API parameters from the other models like temperature and role and tool calling and streaming, but especially max_tokens is no longer supported). The evals are exceptional. OpenAI o1:* ranks in the 89th percentile on competitive programming questions (Codeforces),* places among the top 500 students in the US in a qualifier for the USA Math Olympiad (AIME),* and exceeds human PhD-level accuracy on a benchmark of physics, biology, and chemistry problems (GPQA).You are used to new models showing flattering charts, but there is one of note that you don't see in many model announcements, that is probably the most important chart of all. Dr Jim Fan gets it right: we now have scaling laws for test time compute, and it looks like they scale loglinearly. We unfortunately may never know the drivers of the reasoning improvements, but Jason Wei shared some hints:Usually the big model gets all the accolades, but notably many are calling out the performance of o1-mini for its size (smaller than gpt 4o), so do not miss that.Part 2 Timestamps* [01:15:01] O1 transition* [01:16:07] O1 Meetup Recording* [01:38:38] OpenAI Friday AMA recap* [01:44:47] Q&A Part 2* [01:50:28] O1 DemosDemo Videos to be posted shortly Get full access to Latent Space at www.latent.space/subscribe

In 2008, Dr. Kerry Spencer Pray watched her book die on submission after the financial crash halted publishing acquisitions. She then decided to do a PhD, focusing her research on what makes books sell. After studying hundreds of factors, Dr. Kerry Pray zeroed in on a handful that seemed correlated with book sales in some way. All of them were marketing related, and often linked to a book's advance (which is itself often representative of the support a novel gets). Let's dig in!Dr. Pray talks to us about the data she collected, the methods she used, and the research she produced in pursuit of this project, focusing primarily on the YA marketEnd result: she developed an algorithm that could predict the success or failure of a given novel, with about 75% accuracyHer other big find: the minimum marketing viability threshold (ie, the point at which a book has a shot at selling well, which is defined in this case as selling within expectations relative to its advance)Books can be assigned a marketing viability score, and books which fall below that threshold have zero chance of success (that she has studied so far)Most well-marketed books still don't succeed, but they have a significantly better chance of doing so, and when they do succeed, they sell extremely wellWe discuss various factors and angles of this data / researchDr. Pray lays out the eight factors correlated with book sale successWe discuss outliers, or apparent outliers, and the “myth” of self made success that accompanies very good-selling booksSunyi's theory on why high concept books might thrive better in this kind of environment, and also her metaphor for books as rocket launches (the concept of trying to get into orbit)Scott's speculation on whether publishers run these algorithms themselves, and why or why not they might do soThe surprising importance of Twitter, and the irrelevance of star ratingsGeneral chatter, and where you can find Dr. Pray to get in touch

UnMind: Zen Moments With Great Cloud

What is so preciousAbout the mirror of Mind? You cannot break it!* * *Finally we come to the third and last of the series, the middle-length liturgical poem from Ch'an Buddhism, Hokyo Zammai — Precious Mirror Samadhi by Tozan Ryokai, the founder of Soto Zen in China. Twice as long as Sandokai but only two-thirds of Hsinhsinming, we will have to compact our comments to squeeze it into a reasonably brief segment. So, jumping right in:The Dharma of thusness is intimately transmitted by buddhas and ancestorsNow you have it; preserve it wellWe can find sameness in the differing first lines, “The Great Way is not difficult for those who have no preferences,” and especially “The mind of the great sage of India is intimately transmitted from the West to the East.” Preserving it well may have been more of an issue in the 800s than in the 600s and 700s. It is still an issue today. But are you sure that you really have it?A silver bowl filled with snow; a heron hidden in the moonTaken as similar they are not the sameNot distinguished their places are knownAgain, I come down on the side of interpreting these compelling images as derived from direct experience, rather than abstract references to symbolism. The change in awareness and apprehension of nondual reality that come about through zazen may not be an object of perception, as Master Dogen reminds us, but it changes perception itself. That is, we recover our original mind, before we distorted it with delusional interpretation of experience. The difference, however, is so subtle as to be nearly indistinguishable, like the whiteness of the snow and the silver bowl, or the heron and the moon. Their separate places are known precisely when they are seen as inseparable. The meaning does not reside in the words, but a pivotal moment brings it forthA “pivotal moment” is experienced, not conceptually grasped through words, however eloquent.Move and you are trapped; miss and you fall into doubt and vacillationMoving toward it is a move away from it. Or, like the rainbow, causes it to recede ever further away. If you miss this simple point, you find yourself in doubt and vacillation. But the condition is not terminal.Turning away and touching are both wrong for it is like a massive fireIt is burning, burning, burning, as Buddha taught. Like the sinner-man on the day of judgment, there is no escape. Everywhere you turn, there it is. But you cannot touch it, without getting burnt. It can, and will, touch you, however. The familiar nimbus, the flaming “halo” of Buddhist iconography, illustrates this. The increasing frequency and intensity of forest fires are manifesting it globally.Just to portray it in literary form is to stain it with defilementActually it cannot be stained, and it cannot be reduced to defilement. But you can make this mistake. Nonetheless, you must say something, if you are to encourage others to practice Zen.In darkest night it is perfectly clear; in the light of dawn it is hiddenRecalling Master Kisen's darkness in light and light in darkness, it is more apparent when we are not overwhelmed with light and sound. This is why practice places are tuned to moderate levels of stimulus. It is a standard for all things; its use removes sufferingThere is nothing against which it can be measured. All the measurables we can come up with are arbitrary, against its immeasurable, all-penetrating clarity. Its use enables us to discern the difference between natural and intentional suffering, the former being built-in, the latter being unnecessary. In which case, even natural suffering is found to be no longer unbearable.Although it is not constructed it is not beyond wordsWords can point to it, but point to everything that is not it. It is the source of language, though as Master Sosan assures us, it is ultimately beyond language. Our consciousness is independent of language. Originally, consciousness is not constructed. It takes time and some work to do that. It will take some time and work to undo it.Like facing a precious mirror, form and reflection behold each otherWhat is so precious about this mirror? Ordinary mirrors were surely precious in Master Tozan's time, being handmade, but there is something extraordinarily precious about this Zen mirror. “Form and reflection” beholding “each other” is as close to a description of the nonduality of human consciousness as may be found. Each, taken together, is clearly not “other,” but not-two, to borrow from Master Sosan. You are not it, but in truth it is youLest there still be confusion about self and other, form and reflection — and which is the subset of which — he kindly slaps you in the face with it. Otherwise, it is the wave, thinking that it is the ocean.Like a newborn child, it is fully endowed with five aspectsA reminder that even a newborn child is as close to this truth as the most aged sage. The endowment? Aggregation of form, feeling, thought, impulse and consciousness. No sentient being excepted. No going no coming no arising no abidingThe “unborn mind,” sometimes called the “uncreate.” Because it is unconstructed, it has no definable beginning or ending point. It does not begin with birth, does not end with death. While it appears to arise, abide, change and decay, it is only permanence that can apprehend impermanence. It is change.“Baba wawa” is anything said or not?In the end it says nothing for the words are not yet rightLike the newborn child, it is incoherent when it comes to expressing its truth. Long before language is acquired, the full expression of reality obtains. It does not rely on our knowing it, or on what we do or say. Matsuoka Roshi used to say, “You can talk all day and never make them understand.”In the hexagram “double fire” when main and subsidiary lines are transposedpiled up they become three, the permutations make fivelike the taste of the five-flavored herb, like the five-pronged vajraNo comment. I would have to study the I Ching to offer a credible interpretation. The five-flavored herb I take to mean all five basic flavors in one magical herb. Zen is tasteless, but nutritious, like water. The vajra is the thunderbolt, so one suspects this indicates some powerful mojo. The power of true self.Wondrously embraced within the complete, drumming and singing begin togetherDrumming and singing, again, probably have some traditional interpretation. I leave that to others. I take the drumming to be the initial pulse, the heartbeat, the vibrancy and thrum of inchoate life itself. The singing then would indicate the conscious celebration of life, which finds its beginning in drumming, but manifests later, in the full awareness of consciousness. They are of the same source, but different.Penetrate the source and travel the pathwaysembrace the territory and treasure the roadsThis source is to be penetrated in the inmost consciousness, the seat of existence itself. The pathways are those blazed by our forefathers, both in the everyday sense of society's history, and the particular directions established by our Zen ancestors. As Matsuoka Roshi would say, “The Zen person has no problem following the sidewalks.” The maps handed down to us are not the territory, as the saying goes, but we can treasure the roads, both internal and external, that lead to our original, true home. You would do well to respect this; do not neglect itNatural and wondrous, it is not a matter of delusion or enlightenmentWithin causes and conditions, time and season, it is serene and illuminatingCynics and skeptics abound, both today and in ancient times. It is difficult to accept that our birthright is so immediately accessible through so simple a method as just sitting still enough, long enough. But if we neglect this approach, in favor of the more intriguing and entertaining on offer, we may regret it. It is natural and wondrous, not artificial and ultimately disappointing. But the wonder of it is that it has nothing to do with delusion and enlightenment, other than sorting out our own delusion regarding enlightenment. No matter what the causes and conditions of this particular existence, no matter what season of the year, or of this life, we can return to this source, which is always there, serenely illuminating the reality of nonduality. So minute it enters where there is no gap; so vast it transcends dimensionA hairsbreadth deviation, and you are out of tuneAgain the measurables, the metrics, as we say today. Teensy-tiny beyond imagining, penetrating everywhere, inseparable from the all-encompassing, and in these days they did not have electron microscopes, or the Hubble telescope. But — and this is a big but — if you deviate even a hairsbreadth, which is pretty small, you get static. Like the old-timey analog radio dial. You have to be tuned in exactly. Zazen is your tuning fork. Now there are sudden and gradual in which teachings and approaches ariseWith teachings and approaches distinguished each has its standardWhether teachings and approaches are mastered or not, reality constantly flowsHuineng had done his thing by now, so the so-called sudden and gradual schools were a thing. Various teachings and approaches had arisen throughout history, so these were just the poster-boys at present. Once we stray from the natural and wondrous, we have the corporate standards in their place. But no matter how thoroughly we master them, and please their masters, it doesn't change a thing. What they are pointing to is, and was, flowing in front of your face, all along. And behind your face, as well.Outside still and inside trembling like tethered colts or cowering ratsthe ancients grieved for them and offered them the DharmaLed by their inverted views they take black for whiteWhen inverted thinking stops the affirming mind naturally accordsYou can spend the rest of your life as if you are actually sitting in zazen, or shikantaza, on the cushion, when you are not. Tethered to the practice out of fear, or other unworthy and/or mistaken motives, true masters see your suffering and try to help you overcome your ignorance. The monkey mind can believe that black is white, and vice-versa. As Matsuoka Roshi also said, “Some people can talk themselves out of existence.” But there is a natural way out of this dilemma. Let the monkey lie down, and take a nap. Voila! If you want to follow in the ancient tracks, please observe the sages of the pastOne on the verge of realizing the buddha way contemplated a tree for ten kalpasLike a battle-scarred tiger; like a horse with shanks gone greyTo want to follow in the ancient tracks, of course, implies that one already has some idea of where they purport to lead. We can no longer actually observe most of the ancient sages, of course, as they were not recorded for posterity in any medium other than their imputed, spoken words, and then much more than secondhand once written down. However, we trust the record to the degree that it can yield guidance concerning blind alleys and dead-ends to avoid. One of these is looking for the quick fix. This sage, reputed to be Shakyamuni, perhaps in a former lifetime, contemplated a tree for a long, long time. Endless lifetimes, in fact. The tree itself would have to be ancient, of course, much older than a horse with shanks gone grey. Maybe a redwood. But contemplation was apparently not all serene and blissful. Else, whence come the tiger's battle scars? Been there, done that — seen it all, somehow survived.Because some are vulgar, jeweled tables and ornate robesBecause others are wide-eyed, cats and white oxenBack to the quality of student we might expect, these days. Some are impressed by outer pomp and circumstance. But a robe can also hide a lot of sins. “Wrapping ourselves in Buddha's teachings,” as we chant when donning the robe, is already true, in your birthday suit. But in either case, you do not necessarily truly know it, becoming “wide-eyed.” “Cats and white oxen” are two answers to the popular question, “What kind of animal would you want to be?” As opposed to monkeys and wayward oxen, they represent the realization of true Dharma, which may be wild and natural, but also tamable. With his archer's skill Yi hit the mark at a hundred pacesBut when arrows meet head-on how could it be a matter of skill?Whether arrows meeting head-on was a common trope of the times, or an unattributed sampling of Sekito Kisen's original coinage of a century before, we will leave to the scholars. Yi apparently was an archer famous for his skill, but arrow points coming together — e.g. form and emptiness — is none of our doing. We must go beyond doing, to the point of non-doing, for nonduality to become clear. The wooden man starts to sing; the stone woman gets up dancingIf it — the insight that Zen points to — does become apparent, we are told, even insentient, inanimate objects begin preaching and illustrating the living Dharma. Matsuoka Roshi said, “That stone in the garden is alive!” The world comes to life with this insight, including our own life, the “roar of a lion in a hollow tree.” Like waking from a dream that seems real, as in the old standard. We have to hollow out the tree, however. It is not reached by feelings or consciousness; how could it involve deliberation? It bears repeating, again, that this awakening is birthed in shikantaza, “objectless meditation” — which seems an oxymoron. How can there be meditation, if there is no object? How can there be a subject, if there is no object for the subject to reflect? In form and reflection beholding each other, there is no room for anything else, such as an observer. No observer, no feelings. No feelings, no consciousness, as such. Deliberation outlived its utility long before, jettisoned with all the other excess baggage.Ministers serve their lords; children obey their parentsNot obeying is not filial; failure to serve is no helpA nod to Confucianism, but now in the context of personal liberation, liberation from all the above. It does not help to willfully avoid the sidewalks, trampling on the lawns and flower beds. One cannot be a minister, or even a son or daughter, in name only. Both parent and child must function as such, or give up the claim to filial piety, with all that that would entail in a Confucian society. If ministers do not serve their lords, they better have a really good reason. Simply failing to serve helps no one. We all serve one lord or another. With practice hidden, function secretly like a fool, like an idiotJust to continue in this way is called the host within the hostIf we make a big deal of our practice, showing up fully robed at inappropriate times and places, for instance, or making a show of our understanding of Zen in conversations about other issues, we are not understanding the natural and wondrous nature of Zen. Everyone is already practicing Zen, whether they know it or not, for Zen isn't anything in itself. It is simply the living out of life in the most conscious way possible. Functioning secretly, with regard to Zen, we are more likely to have a positive influence on others.A fool, or an idiot, here, simply means someone who does not care what impression is made upon others, and largely lives outside the mainstream of cultural norms and memes regarding fame and fortune, reputation, and so on. In doing so, one manifests the innermost, most intimate understanding — the host within the host — which naturally informs all interactions with the guest, any guest, whether the inner chattering monkey, or transactions with others in the normal course of events.Skillful or expedient means stem most naturally, and wholesomely, from the inner sanctum of the true self, where it is clear that there is “neither self nor other-than-self,” in this not-two road to nonduality. You cannot tell a book by its cover. So, no need to go changing our dust jacket to impress others.* * *Elliston Roshi is guiding teacher of the Atlanta Soto Zen Center and abbot of the Silent Thunder Order. Zazen is the bomb, the essence of essential.Without it, no Zen.* * *You can’t spell “zazen” without “z-e-n, zen,” and you can’t practice Zen without zazen. Some who should know better may disagree, but Zen cannot be separated from Buddhism, and Zen is founded exclusively on the insights that come from zazen. Some might argue that they do not have to practice meditation in order to “get” Zen, to adopt its worldview, and enjoy the benefits thereof. I say good luck with that. While working on my graduate degree in design, I had a roommate sharing an apartment on the north side of Chicago, a jazz pianist who would come home from the gig, toss his hat at the hat rack, and declare “My Zen thing is working!” — or not — depending on whether he missed, or not. For some, Zen is just that simple. We are either in the flow, or not. In the moment, or not. When we are, that is Zen. When we are not, it is not. This particular stereotype may stem from Zen’s Taoist heritage in China. Taoism stresses being in harmony with the Great Way, and offers some parables on that theme, including a shaggy dog story about the Taoist’s sympathetic neighbor, who loudly laments when his only horse runs off, then celebrates its return, followed by a whole herd of horses. Next, he laments the Taoist’s son breaking his leg while taming one of the wild stallions, then celebrating the fact that the army does not conscript the son, and on and on, with the pendulum swinging wildly, day after day. Meanwhile the Taoist himself responds only, “I don’t know, could be good, could be bad…” with each reversal of fortune. This tale, which begins to sound like a standup routine from the Borscht Belt, certainly has a grain of truth in it, like any good stereotype. It offers a shortcut way of thinking, so that we don’t have to take its message too seriously. But seriously, folks… life gets tedious, as grandma used to say. There are endless, and unrelenting — and not only technical — circumstances beyond our control — beyond anyone’s control — that intrude at the most inconvenient moments. Like the current pandemic. Or the impending election. But no worries — we won’t go there.Where we will go is back to zazen. It is the “bomb” — or more accurately, “da bomb” — which the dictionary defines as “an outstandingly good person or thing.” That such a hipster colloquial expression would be given space in what used to be the pages, now the computer screen, of what used to be the somber, sober, primary authoritative tome on English vocabulary usage — the dictionary — is both refreshing, and disturbing. Purists lament such liberal laxity of language, while laissez-faire anarchists celebrate mocking what used to be “the king’s English.”Which brings us to the repeat references to language that you may stumble across, if you are not careful enough to avoid the Soto Zen liturgy, especially those gnarly missives from China, three major teachings that we chant, from the early Chinese transmission. The first, second and third hail from around the 600s, 700s, and 800s CE, respectively, almost exactly a century apart. I will read the Japanese version of the Masters’ names, the Chinese pronunciation being more challenging:Hsinhsinming / “Faith Mind”(Jianzhi Sengcan/Kanchi Sosan d. 606)Sandokai / “Harmony of Difference and Equality”(Shitou Xiqian/Sekito Kisen 700–790)andHokyo Zammai / “Precious Mirror Samadhi”(Dongshan Liangjie/Tozan Ryokai 807–869)The first is by the third Ch’an patriarch after Bodhidharma, usually referred to as Sengcan, and is the longest, at a bit fewer than 1,000 words in English translation. The second is the shortest, at just under 300 words, and the third is in-between, at just under 500. That translates roughly into three pages for the first, one for the second, and two pages for the third. A factoid that, 100 years apart, these three Masters felt moved to comment on Zen at radically different length. Do you suppose that they imagined that we would be reading these, over 1,000 years later? What they have to say about Zen, and our compulsion to translate experience into words and concepts, is instructive. The first, Hsinhsinming, starts out challenging our very preference for preferences:The Great Way is not difficult for those who have no preferencesShortly thereafter, he points out that this applies to all dimensions of practice and daily life, without mentioning meditation, including our preference for passivity over activity, for example trying to suppress the monkey mind, which in Zen is a losing proposition:When you try to stop activity to achieve passivityyour very effort fills you with activityAs long as you remain in one extreme or the otheryou will never know OnenessWe should note that while both extremes are to be avoided, the gist of the poem points to nonduality of reality, where even emphasizing “oneness” as a thing can be misleading:Although all dualities come from the Onedo not be attached even to this OneAnd later, toward the end,When such dualities cease to exist, Oneness itself cannot existNonetheless, we dance with the idea of duality versus nonduality as we work our way through the Master’s analysis:Those who do not live in the single Way fail in both activity and passivity — assertion and denialTo deny the reality of things is to miss their realityto assert the emptiness of things is to miss their realitySo even emptiness, the holy grail of Zen, can be a case of over-thinking. Further:The more you talk and think about itthe further astray you wander from the truthStop talking and thinking, and there is nothing you will not be able to knowThat is pretty brutal, but compassionately so. Talking and thinking do not necessarily help. They can even get in the way of knowing, in the deepest sense of the term. From the second poem, Sandokai, we hear more comments about language from Sekito Kisen:…revered and common, each has its speechHow many times have we heard, and recoiled from, that holy-holy sort of tone of voice, preaching in stentorian resonance, or hush-hush whisper — indicating that what is being said is really special, apart from the ordinary, so listen up — but which often comes off as somewhat strained, even phony? Attempted eloquence slides into artificial cadence. But according to Master Dogen, in his first manual on meditation, “By virtue of zazen, it is possible to transcend the difference between common and sacred.” It is said that there is no “stench of holiness” in Zen. The down-to-earth, earthy and pithy comments of great Zen masters of the past, such as Dogen — who recognized the importance and rarity of encountering and hearing the “true Dharma,” but considered it nothing out of the ordinary — are downright refreshing by contrast. Sandokai also includes comments on the nature of language itself:Darkness merges refined and common wordsbrightness distinguishes clear and murky phrasesHere the reference to darkness versus brightness may be Ch’an symbolism, but I think a simpler, more direct interpretation is in order. Refined or revered speech includes the vernacular, when considered from the standpoint that there is no daylight between the common and sacred in Zen. The brightness of Zen’s direct, experiential insight allows us to sort through the phrases of the ancients, no matter how clear or murky the syntax.Toward the end of Master Sekito’s poem, we find another zinger on language itself:Hearing the words, understand the meaningdo not establish standards of your ownWhile Zen is the ultimate in do-it-yourself as a practice, there is something to be said for listening to others who have been there and done that, and to not be fooled by the words themselves, or our preconceptions of their meaning. Perhaps the most famous phrase from Zen, one that everyone seems to think they know the meaning of, is “The finger pointing at the moon.” Do not be taken in by either the finger, or the moon. The standards that have been handed down from the ancients — who were no slackers, after all — are what Dogen was interested in finding out, in China. Which he demonstrated, when asked what souvenirs he had brought back, by holding out his empty hands.Master Tozan, the founder of Soto Zen in China, begins the third poem with the stunning assertion:The dharma of thusness is intimately transmitted by buddhas and ancestorsNow you have it; preserve it wellWe have to wonder who he thinks his audience is. Is he implying that we already have the Dharma? “Thusness” is a tricky word here, pointing to the “as-it-is-ness” of reality, the ineffable truth that is fully in front of our face, but totally beyond expression, like the moon that can only be pointed to. If we “have it,” it must have somehow already been transmitted to us, in this intimate fashion, so intimate that we may be totally unaware of when and how it happened. Again, Master Dogen has got you covered (Jijuyu Zammai “Self-fulfilling Samadhi”):When you first seek Dharmayou imagine that you are far away from its environsBut Dharma is already correctly transmittedyou are immediately your original selfSo we don’t have something else to worry about acquiring, this Dharma. It is innate, our birthright. Yet we are charged with preserving it, and doing that well. So we have to at least have some idea of what it is that we are preserving, and how. Not to mention who, exactly, we are preserving it for. We understand that it cannot be transmitted in words, so in what kind of language is it communicated? Master Tozan, the “To” in Soto, drops a clue in the next stanza:The meaning does not reside in the wordsbut a pivotal moment brings it forthThis “pivotal moment,” of which we have heard much, seems to be the ticket to what is missing. As Master Dogen reminds us some 400 years later, in the same tract:All this, however, does not appear within perception, because it is unconstructedness in stillness, it is immediate realizationIf the Dharma were an object of perception, in other words, it would by definition have to be a mental construction. He continues clarifying this point, the difference between appearance and essence, in the Genjokoan excerpt from Bendowa, the first chapter in Shobogenzo, his comprehensive collection:The boundary of realization is not distinct, for the realization itself comes forth with the mastery of Buddhadharma. Although actualized immediately, the inconceivable may not be apparent. Its appearance is beyond your knowledge. So we cross some sort of boundary on this journey, but we cannot be aware of crossing it. I have to add my usual caveat that, just as we do not master Zen, but it masters us, the same may be said for Buddhadharma. It is more a process of surrendering to this truth, the “compassionate teaching,” than mastering it, as if one had taken up the challenge of actually reading Tolstoy’s War and Peace or James Joyce’s Ulysses cover-to-cover, and actually assimilating its meaning. Dogen seems to belabor the obvious, that the inconceivable, being inconceivable, would necessarily not be in any way, shape or form, apparent. So within this realization, we must enter into a new dimension of reality, in which nothing is as it appears. Like Alice in Wonderland.Zen has been said to be about the pursuit of the understanding of meaning. But that particle of meaning that can be translated into language is regarded as just the tip of the iceberg. And the truism from communications design, that the message is not that which is sent, but that which is received, holds true for Zen. As the poem relates further:Just to portray it in literary form is to stain it with defilementThis defilement is the attempt to reduce the profound essence of Zen to words and concepts. Because we are human beings communicating with human beings about Zen, we find that there is no exit from this trap. But we do not have to be confused, regarding the efficacy and precision of language, whether written or spoken. It is the best we have to work with, in all its inadequacy. But Master Tozan goes on to assure us that the effort, nonetheless, is worthwhile:Although it is not constructed, it is not beyond wordsAnd then he follows with an attempt to put his dharma where his mouth is, with the title stanza:Like facing a precious mirrorform and reflection behold each otherThis conjures quite an image. The mirror is mentioned as a repeat trope, or theme, in Zen, so we should give it due consideration — but as an image, rather than a concept. Like Alice going right through the looking-glass to the other side, or Einstein, engaging in thought experiments beyond thinking, and at the speed of light, the dharma gate begins to open just a crack. We can just barely see the light leaking through. Master Dogen captures this same spirit in another visionary passage from the same Genjokoan:When you see forms and hear soundsfully engaging body and mindyou grasp things directlyUnlike things and their reflections in the mirrorand unlike the moon and its reflection in the waterWhen one side is illumined, the other side is darkTaking the analogy of the mirror to new heights, or new depths. What we are actually seeing — in lieu of an actual mirror — is like a mirror, but radically different. In order to see something reflected in a mirror, or on the smooth surface of a body of water, both sides have to be illuminated: that which is reflected, and its reflection. Otherwise, nothing can be seen on either side, like a mirror reflecting an unlit, underground vault under a pyramid. However, our usual condition of seeing reflects only one side of the totality. Behind the eyes, so to speak, and on the other side of the objects in our field of vision, lies the dark. This velvety dark extends throughout the universe. We even suspect that there is a preponderance of dark matter, and dark energy, throughout. But as the poem reminds us, grasping this truth can be taken as an example of personal, perceptual relativity, illuminating the limits of our “eye of practice” (Master Dogen’s coinage):In darkest night, it is perfectly clear; in the light of dawn, it is hiddenSomething there is that comes out at night, but recedes in daylight, recalling the phrase, “How bright and transparent, the moonlight of wisdom,” from Master Hakuin’s poem, Zazen Wasan, “Song of Zazen.” This begs the question: if this light in darkness is not coming from the sun, the moon, or the stars, then where does it come from?In Sandokai, this same point is touched upon some 100 years prior:The spiritual source shines clear in the lightthe branching streams flow on in the darkHere the reference to the single source becoming many streams may be a trope for the five houses of Zen carrying the light of enlightenment into the ubiquitous darkness of ignorance characteristic of civilization. Bringing it down to the personal level once again:In the light there is darkness, but do not take it as darknessIn the dark there is light, but do not see it as lightLight and dark oppose one anotherlike the front and back foot in walkingThe direct experience of light under the intense glare of zazen reveals a vacillation characteristic of all sensory stimulus and sense-data. There is no darkness without light, and no light without darkness. And there can be neither without the observer.Matsuoka Roshi once made the startling declaration, “The light by which you see things comes from you.” In zazen, we begin to witness the nonduality of our so-called internal, versus external, lighting. It seems to originate on both sides of the sensory interface. Further, there is something timeless about it, as reflected in the “Precious Mirror”:Within causes and conditions, time and season, it is serene and illuminatingAnd even further, it is not really dependent upon our understanding of it, or lack thereof:Now there are sudden and gradual, in which teachings an approaches ariseWhether teachings and approaches are mastered or not, reality constantly flowsThe reference here is to the so-called Northern and Southern schools in China after the advent of Huineng, the famous Sixth Patriarch of Ch’an Buddhism, also known as the “gradual” and “sudden” schools of enlightenment, respectively. Of course, sudden and gradual comprise another binary dyad, which dissolves in the nonduality of reality. If there is such thing as enlightenment, it must be both sudden and gradual, simultaneously. The main point is that the reality that Zen points to is constantly flowing, outside of and independent of our ideas about it. It doesn’t care what we think. The earliest poem, Hsinhsinming, seems to verify this same finding:All is empty — clear — self-illuminating, with no exertion of the mind's powerThat this level of insight is not really accessible through ordinary exertions is easy to understand. But that does not mean it is entirely out of reach. It is some comfort to know that whatever the truth — the Dharma — is, it already is true, and that no amount of mental effort will make that any plainer.Lastly, it should be mentioned that the ancient masters did not suffer fools gladly, but they were willing to appear foolish themselves, if need be. In the last line of the third poem, Master Tozan gives us some friendly advice:With practice hidden, function secretly, like a fool, like an idiotJust to continue in this way is called the host within the hostThe “host” reference is to a Zen teaching model using the “host and guest” analogy as a foil to examine the relationship of self to other, mind to body, subject to object, et cetera — all the binary pairs of seeming opposites the discriminating mind may conjure. The host within the host is the “inmost” reality, in which the apparent separation between inside and outside — a fundamental dyad — disappears. What is left is not one, exactly, but definitely not-two. In society, we can function in this reality without making a big deal of it to others. We can be in our milieu, but not of it, like a fool, like an idiot. And we can continue in this way with no regrets. Please just do your best, on the cushion and off. Welcome back to Planet Storytime! In this episode of the podcast, Thomas Mitchell and Paxton Stanley deliver one of L. Frank Baum's often overlooked classics, The Wonderful Pump, a story that dramatically illustrates how greed taints best possible outcomes and the crucial need to remain fully mindful when opportunity presents itself. Once again, we would like to express our gratitude to all of our loyal listeners worldwide! Our audience continues to grow each week and the outpouring of support humbles the entire PSP team! THANK YOU!!Housekeeping:- We're less than two weeks away from our 1 year anniversary, and as we head into our second year, we have exciting changes coming, including producing 100% all-original content, and diving deeper into the history of Planet Storytime- Before we make the change to all-original content, we have a handful of children's classics we intend to produce, including at least a pair of Rudyard Kipling's most famous works- Given challenges with Covid-19, distributed work, digital learning, etc., our production schedule has lagged behind our intended plans for 2020; we promise that our publication frequency will increase back to 2-3 podcasts/months as soon as possible- Our much anticipated website will finally roll out in the next few weeks as wellWe could literally spend 1000 words expressing our gratitude for your support but we know the best 'thank you' back to all PSP fans is to get more content into everyone's ears. Our first year was largely an experiment to gauge interest levels and overall sustainability. Suffice it to say that the overwhelmingly positive feedback and subscriptions have convinced us to continue making podcasts indefinitely!Thank you, loyal listeners! In this episode, I am joined by Tim van Aarde. Like many of us, Tim started his career in a corporate environment, working for one of the big accounting and auditing firms. He soon found himself thinking that this was not the career for him, as it lacked purpose and he wanted something deeper and more fulfilling from a career. He set out on a journey, back to university, studying humanities before shifting his focus to theology. After university, Tim took up a position at a local church and a chance meeting led him on the next step of his journey, which was a move to Burundi in East Africa. Tim shares his wonderful experiences and learnings and how he found purpose in what he was doing.Key TakeawaysDon't get stuck in an environment where you are not exposed to new ideasIt is never too late to study or learn something newIn looking for your purpose or deeper meaning in what it is you do, there needs to be conviction. This is a common misconception with worship in the modern day churchInteresting story- we're continuing the story of Saul with the distressing spirit. What we find in this story is that Saul sends for a worshipper, and his servants find David, back with the sheep- and bring him before Saul. Saul doesn't do the worshipping, David does. And when David plays and worships, the bad spirit upon Saul leaves him. V23  And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him. Many church focus on having a ‘worship experience' or having a ‘worship band'. The décor of the room lends itself to a concert setting in which the congregants become spectators of performanceMany worship bands are hirelings that are playing for money- some of who aren't savedMusic is great to have in church- but attempting perfection to ‘draw people in' at the expense of God isn't good. Met hirelings, seen theatrics, watched dance routines and lighting shows. Wrong spirit. Some with argue with me that its possible to have a polished performance and a correct heart, but I've yet to see it. To me its either “coming back to a heart of worship” or it's a show Worship starts with you In v 16 its again, the servants to propose to Saul that they bring in a worshipper to ease the pain of the evil spirit that is upon Saul. Notice- Not that Saul should turn from his wicked ways, repent and worship God, but lets go and get someone to worship for youv 17 So Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.” – Saul Agrees! Yes- I don't want to worship- I want someone ELSE to! Nice!contrast between the heart of Saul and David begins to take clear shape at this pointPsalm 5:7 But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple.David's heart is “I will worship” Sauls heart is “find someone to worship for me”This begins to show the contrast between someone who expects others to do the job of worshipping for you- it sounds like “I want a church with a great worship team”The size, skill and cool factor of worship team will not be the key to Saul or your victorySaul needed to worship on his own. He needed to worship God and get HIS heart right What does it mean to you You have to stop judging worship by what it sounds and looks like and who is doing itGalatians 6:5 For each one shall bear his own load. 2 Cor 5:10 as wellWe are a collective body of Christ that is redeemed as whole who are indv. acountableYou have to begin to realize that YOU need to become a worshipper. https://youtu.be/iy6Ab1gsQJA Smile in the face of your enemies 1 Sam 2:1-11 Why are we even here today? Why did you set your alarm, rearrange your schedule and come here. We will find the answer in 1 Samuel 2 today. There are many reasons that people Go to ChurchSee people, be with people, talk with people, get the latest gossip, to get noticed, to be appreciated, to feel better about myself, get a better perspective on life, hear good music, serve, be a part of something bigger than myself, build business connections, improve my marriage, have my kids be more obedient, stop my addictions/bad behaviors, check in on facebook to make people think I’m good, to be in charge of something, to influence other people, to find a spouse, to find friends, to be a part of a hip church, to feel validated in your lifestyle, to serve the poor, to help people, to learn, to expand your mind, to check the box, to feel better, to feel God’s presence, to fall out, to receive a word, to advance your own ministry, to expand your influence, etc etc etc There are also many reasons people go to a sports eventTo be around people, talk with people, to get noticed, to be part of something bigger than themselves, to build business connections, do something with my spouse, kids, do something ‘positive’ instead of addictions, check in on facebook, find a spouse, find friends, be a part of winning team, to expand your mind, to feel different, to get caught up in the excitement, to wear the gear, feel like a winner, have something to argue about, to do my civic duty, to be around famous people, to hear good music,Sports events have a lot in common with churches, arriving together, high fives (hugs), sing special songs (worship songs) cheering for the team (clapping, amening), rituals- coin toss, intros, anthems. Exit the stadium, leave the church. Shared identity,Do you know why you go to a sporting event? TO WATCH THE GAMEDo you know why you go to church? TO WORSHIP GODJohn 4:23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.Sports are wrong worship to a wrong God- Many churches worship wrong God as wellWe want to worship the right God in the right way. What is worship? A decision to make everything about thanking God for everythingWe see that in 1 Sam 2:1-11 READWhat do we see from that? HANNAH WORSHIPPED GOD. We should worship GODWhat did we just see in the song of Hannah? A heart of worship!Now- don’t think that Hannah had an easy life. Remember she was barren. She was attacked for her barreness, and her husband was clueless. She was hurting. She was sad. She had a broken heart, anguish and resentment. She was at war with others, herself and GodYOU- Why do people attack me? Why do I hate myself? Why wont God give me what I want?Common story even today- But NOW her worship shows she has been transformed! She was THANKFUL for what God had done. She SAW God for who he was. She wad DEPENDENT on him. Here’s what Hannah had based on her worship: A heart that worships, knows protection, sees a Holy God, wants life change ,sees strength in God, sees God’s provision, sees God’s sovereignty, sees God’s dominion, sees God’s justice, sees God’s plan to install an eternal King- JesusHere’s the biggest thing- the response from Hannah for having God move in her life was to WORSHIP- To be THANKFUL. To have God be BIGGER than HER and HER ProblemsShe didn’t just take what she was given and go on her merry way- she WORSHIPPED GODThis is what AW Tozer said– “Sometimes I go to God and say ‘ God, if you never answer another prayer while I live on this earth, I will still worship you as long as I live and in the ages to come for what you have done already’ God’s already put me so far in debt, that if I were to live one million millenniums I couldn’t pay him for what he’s done for me” This is a heart of worship! How can we repay God?
