In this episode of Why Change? co-hosts Ashraf and Jeff connect to discuss Ashraf's conversation with legendary musician and artist, Terry Morgan. Terry's incredible past as a musician created a unique chemistry of opportunity as one experience opened him to another, finally leading him to create Borealis, Festival of Lights, an innovative visual and digital art festival based in Seattle, Washington. Ashraf and Jeff discuss how Terry's personal narrative highlights opportunities for young people to be not only exposed to the arts as an outlet for their creativity, but also a real way they can begin accomplishing change they want to make in their communities. In this episode you'll learn: Examples of entry points and connections young people can find into the creative economy; How youth can begin to actually inform the creative economy and digital communities; and In what ways community connections throughout your life can present unexpected opportunities for innovation. ABOUT TERRY MORGAN: As a musician, earning his master's at the University of Washington, Terry teamed up with Jack Buchans, a student of Nam Jun Paik, who had built a Paik-Abe video synthesizer. They spend endless hours creating abstract electronic video art with synthesized soundtracks. These early experiments attracted Terry to the word of Light Art, Festivals, and Projection Mapping. The beauty, inspiration, and impact that radiates from the faster growing art form in the world is now the most exciting part of his life. Having been on the ground floor of Seattle's early alternative music scene, he has seen how opportunity can inspire greatness. Borealis now provides a showcase venue for some of the most innovative artists in the world. They are working to create landmark experiences hat will unite the art and tech world in a celebration of new releaities and imagination. This episode of Why Change? One of my favorite experiences from SXSW was Vincent Morisset's Composition, which is a physical installation of a table with blocks that serves as the interface of a interactive music piece that continually shifts the algorithm for how it generates the music. It's got some great beats and tunes that manages to always sound great while still giving the users the ability to modulate and shape the music through how they distribute the blocks on the table. It's a remarkably elegant experience that is able to tap into some deeply immersive and delightfully amazing interactions. There's a physicality to this experience that goes beyond the pure VR or AR experiences that we've been enjoying from the comforts of our home, and also taps into some unique social dynamics as an experience that also works well with more than one person. I talk with the director of the piece, Vincent Morisset about how he developed this as a part of an artist residency at the Phi Centre, and the evolution of this piece to achieve this balance of agency and novelty.

The TCL Chinese Theater originally opened its doors in 1927, and the grand opening is known for hosting the most thrilling theater opening in motion picture history. The theater has always been one of Hollywood’s biggest attractions on the Walk of Fame, and thanks to a permanent projection mapping project dubbed “Hollywood Lights,” which launched on the theater’s 90th anniversary, the historic L.A. landmark is finding new audiences after nightfall. At sundown, four-minute shows begin in celebration of Hollywood's most iconic films and continue through the night every 20 minutes. Christie Digital, a leader in delivering visual and audio experiences, was selected to develop this digital media project along with the TCL Chinese Theater. Jan Miller, Christie’s Senior Experience Designer, joins us to reveal the digital signage story behind “Hollywood Lights,” which won a Silver APEX Award this year at Digital Signage Expo. The Real of Reality | International Conference on Philosophy and Film Wed, 02.11.2016 – Sun, 06.11.2016 ZKM_Media Theater, ZKM_Lecture Hall, ZKM_Media Lounge, ZKM_Cube The language of film was made for the cinema. When a film starts and the auditorium gets dark, we forget about the space around us and get into the reality of the film. Here, the montage is a fundamental technique to narrate a story. We jump from one place to the next and, in doing so, bridge the gap of unnecessary time. The auditorium is a place in which we can lose our customary perception of space and time. But what happens if we relocate a film to a place where we are aware of our environment? What happens if we think about film as a site-specific narration and a form of augmented reality? When a movie is embedded in a spatial surrounding the montage becomes a disrupting element in an otherwise constant environment. The spatial film requires a language that takes the environment and the three dimensional projection surface into account. The technology of “Projection Mapping” gives us the opportunity to work accurately and explicitly with spatial structures. In our talk, we try to re-think common conceptions of film and focus on practical examples of cinematographic aspects outside their common spatial localization. We want to put the theoretical background of cinema into context with a philosophy of site-specific narrations. To illustrate the differences, we will discuss observations and examples from our practical experiences and projects. International Conference on Philosophy and Film Photography and film in particular paved the way for complex philosophical questions regarding the nature of reality and its mechanical reproduction. What does film reproduce and how can we grasp this element, which has the transactive ability to form reality although originating in reality? This shaping takes palce through a complex interaction of image, action and narration and tends to permeate reality completely. It is an inconspicuous process that already affects our everyday life profoundly and is based on a revolution of the real. What does film show? Do we have access to reality that is not based on images or narrations? And what can film and its analysis contribute to philosophical debates on the real? These are questions we are asking to engage in a dialogue between philosophy and film. For five days, one hundred and fifty philosophers, media scholars and filmmakers will connect philosophical theory with cinematic practice and open up new ideas and concepts. To accompany the program, there will be film screenings of documentaries of the invited filmmakers. The participation at the conference is also possible without the presentation of a paper. The conference will be held in English.
In this episode of the podcast we talk with one of the presenters who will be at the upcoming CMP Conclave in Baltimore. Brandt Krueger, the owner of Event Technology Consulting is one of the "go to" speakers in the meetings industry on a variety of AV and technology topics. He's been published on numerous industry websites, spoken at events ranging from MPI's WEC to last year's CMP Conclave in Reno. He also currently teaches classes via the Event Leadership Institute. In this episode we preview his session set for Baltimore on Projection Mapping. The session will focus on creative uses of video mapping to create amazing effects that come at a reasonable cost compared to some of the multi-million dollar effects we've seen used by major companies like Disney. He'll provide some great resources and insights into how adding this technology to an event can provide a great return on the costs while creating an unforgettable audience experience. Here are links to a couple resources that we discuss during the show: Projection Mapping Central: http://projection-mapping.org/whatis/ Christie Digital: https://www.christiedigital.com/en-us/projection-mapping Brandt Krueger's Website: http://www.brandtkrueger.com

Edmonton's theatre community has staged many original works over the past decade. The Citadel, Edmonton's premiere theatre, has itself staged many adaptation that have been written here. What is much rarer for the Citadel is a completely original work. But that has changed. To cap off an outstanding year for the Citadel, the theatre is staging Make Mine Love, an original work written by Tom Wood. You can read about the play here on the Citadel's website. But for our 100th episode, Scott and I wanted to talk about the technical aspects of the film, because it involves some unusual techniques and some specialized technology. I'm talking about Projection Mapping, which was made possible by the creative team at the Citadel with the help of Owen Brierley, the Executive Director of Guru Digital Arts College (and one of our sponsors). Owen's been on the show before, but it was time to have him back. Find out what it took to take Make Mine Love from page to stage! And listen to this episode for you chance to win Oodle Noodle gift certificates!
