There are moments in life that break us and moments that remake us. Mo Isom Aiken's story is one of both. From an Elite Division 1, All-American athlete to a woman haunted by trauma, addiction, and suicidal despair, Mo's life took a dramatic turn when a near-fatal car crash became the very altar where heaven met earth. What followed was a supernatural encounter with the Holy Spirit that not only saved her life, but ignited a transformation so complete it would ripple through her marriage, her motherhood, and her mission around the world. This isn't just a story of redemption. It's a call to awaken to the invisible spiritual warfare waging over every soul—and to the freedom that comes with surrendering everything. In this episode of the Revelations Podcast, host Reagan Kramer sits down with Mo Isom Aiken for an unfiltered, deeply moving conversation that spans trauma, healing, and the raw power of a life fully yielded to Jesus. Mo opens up about growing up in the Bible Belt, navigating father wounds and performance-based identity, and the spiritual warfare that nearly claimed her life. Together, they explore Mo's radical encounter with God in the wreckage of her Jeep, the prophetic call that led her family from a fifth-wheel RV across 48 states to the mission fields of Nigeria, and the power of intercession that reshaped her view of prayer entirely. This episode is for the believer who feels stuck in cycles of shame or silence, the seeker longing to hear God's voice again, or the weary warrior who needs to remember what it means to defect from the kingdom of darkness and live fully alive in Christ. Here are three reasons why you should listen to this episode:Gain deeper understanding of how a supernatural encounter with God can occur amidst unimaginable personal tragedy.Learn how radical obedience—like selling everything and living in an RV—can unlock divine provision and spiritual growth.Reflect on the importance of prayer, spiritual warfare, and intimacy with the Holy Spirit in a chaotic world.Become Part of Our Mission! That lie keeps us stuck, powerless, and numb to God's call.Cultural Christianity is an illusion; we should consider what full surrender actually looks like.Mo Isom Aiken, a former All-American athlete turned revivalist and prophetic voice shares her story of defection from darkness—and the fire of obedience that followed.[02:56] Mo Isom Aiken: Childhood and Early LifeMo discovered her identity through competitive sports.Despite being raised in a Christian household, her faith was cultural and lacked deep personal roots. She describes the impact of early exposure to pornography and the pressure of performance-based love from her father. Her struggle with an eating disorder and need for control remained hidden behind a mask of success.[12:22] Transition to College and Personal StrugglesAt LSU, Mo excels as an All-American goalkeeper but continues battling inward brokenness.[13:02] Mo: “How much of my true self and my true life can people handle? Because they have this picture of me, and yet I am destroyed inside.”Her father committed suicide, devastating Mo both emotionally and spiritually. She turns to sexual sin, secrecy, and self-harm, wrestling with suicidal thoughts and tormenting spiritual voices.Though publicly praised, she describes living with private torment and deep spiritual oppression.[20:54] Spiritual Awakening and HealingMo survives a violent car crash and has a supernatural encounter with the Holy Spirit while trapped in the wreckage. She describes the weight and wonder of God's presence as overwhelming yet freeing.[22:58] Mo: “The kingdom of darkness was literally mad because things had been set up in my life that my gifts, my talents, my destiny, my anointing, my very God, given fingerprint of God, purpose was going to be leveraged for evil was going to advance the kingdom of darkness, if not for the mercy of Jesus”In that moment, she chooses full surrender to Jesus and receives a baptism of fire. Her salvation marks a clear defection from darkness into God's Kingdom—spiritually, emotionally, and physically.[28:20] Recognizing God in the Midst of DarknessMo reflects on how God pursued her even during seasons of rebellion and bondage. She shares a deliverance session where a spirit confessed she had “defected” from its kingdom. The conversation highlights how spiritual warfare is strategic and real—but God's grace is more powerful.Mo encourages listeners to stop excusing bondage and fully embrace the invitation to be made whole.[33:22] Impact of Faith on Personal RelationshipsReturning to campus, Mo feels conviction and begins separating from old friends and sinful patterns. She committed herself to purity and obedience, even when it meant facing rejection and isolation.[39:07] Mo: “But if you won't separate yourselves from the ones who are holding you back from your destiny — then you've tightly gripped something God's asking you to open your hands about right? When you open your hands, when you let go of things, He will then, in time, refill what is His good portion.”Through FCA, she found a godly community, received a baptism at LSU, and experienced revival.A two-year intimacy fast sets the stage for meeting her husband, Jeremiah, and building a Christ-centered family.[46:45] Fifth Wheel Missions and Family LifeMo recalls receiving a prophetic word in college about living in a fifth-wheel RV and going on mission.A decade later, she and Jeremiah sell everything and travel the U.S. with their four kids, sharing the gospel. She shares how moments of humor and hardship—like a sewage overflow—shaped their faith and resilience. The RV season prepared them for deeper obedience and future international missions.[56:44] Mission to Nigeria and Angelic VisitMo recounts a dream where an angel tells her she'll go to Nigeria to forge a deeper connection to the divine.Initially resistant due to fear for her children, she surrenders and receives confirmation from her mentors. The family spent eight months in Lagos serving under Nigerian spiritual leaders.Their time becomes a season of discipleship, humility, and spiritual equipping for future ministry.[1:14:19] The Power of Prayer: Greatest Takeaway from NigeriaMo describes prayer as the single greatest lesson from their mission season. In Nigeria, daily prayer was non-negotiable—fostering spiritual strength, wisdom, and breakthrough. She challenges Western believers to move prayer from a fallback to a foundation.Prayer, she emphasizes, is the gateway to discernment, power, and intimacy with God.[1:21:24] Teaching the Next Generation to Prioritize PrayerMo and Reagan discuss the difficulty of maintaining a prayerful life amid Western busyness and distractions.Mo explains how she and Jeremiah are raising their children to see prayer as essential, not optional. They commit to resisting hustle culture and modeling devotion in everyday life.Mo calls for prayer warriors to arise—those who walk in reverence, not performance. [1:32:39] Spiritual Warfare and the Call to Live Fully SurrenderedMo prays a powerful blessing over listeners for renewal, healing, and sanctification.Revival begins in surrendered hearts, not just pulpits; it is in living God's Word to be kind and loving to all those around you.It is our time to live fully awake, defecting from darkness and advancing God's Kingdom with boldness. About Mo Isom AikenMo Isom Aiken is a prophetic voice, revivalist, and bestselling author whose life and ministry are marked by radical obedience, spiritual boldness, and supernatural transformation. A former all-American goalkeeper at LSU, Mo encountered the living God in a near-fatal car accident that became a divine turning point. From the ashes of trauma, addiction, and loss—including her father's suicide—Mo rose into deep intimacy with Jesus and a calling to call others out of darkness and into the light. With more than 14 years of experience speaking, teaching, and discipling, Mo now carries a powerful anointing for deliverance, prayer, and spiritual awakening.Alongside her husband Jeremiah and their four children, Mo lives as part of a family on mission—mobilizing across America in a fifth-wheel RV before being prophetically sent to Nigeria through an angelic encounter. Their journey is a living testimony of surrendered faith, courageous intercession, and generational restoration. Whether preaching in churches, serving the overlooked, or training others in spiritual warfare, Mo is driven by one purpose: to see Jesus made known, captives set free, and the Kingdom of God established on earth as it is in heaven.Connect with Mo on her website or socials: Instagram, Facebook, or X.Enjoyed this Episode? If you did, subscribe and share it with your friends!Post a review and share it! 75. Bob Kalsu: An American Hero

Past Our Prime

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2025 96:10

When Rocky Bleier went to Vietnam he had just finished his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers… wounded in action, Rocky would return to the States and begin a long and arduous rehabilitation. Doctors told him if all went well, he should be able to walk again… but Rocky was having none of that. He was determined to make it back to the NFL… He missed the entire 1970 season and made it back to the Steelers roster in 1971, eventually helping Pittsburgh win 4 Super Bowls as the team of the 70's. His time in Vietnam is chronicled in the June 9, 1975 issue of Sports Illustrated with Bleier featured on the cover. Bob Kalsu was in the same 1968 NFL Draft as Bleier, chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the 8th round after being an All-American tackle at the University of Oklahoma… and much like Bleier, he too left the NFL after his rookie season to fight in Vietnam. The difference is, Kalsu never came home. On July 21, 1970 a blast took his life and made him the only active duty NFL player to die in the Vietnam War. It also left his wife, Jan Kalsu, a widow, and a single mother of two children. A daughter, and a son, who was born two days later after the father he would never meet was killed in action. Jan gave birth to Bob, Jr. and was informed of the death of her husband while at the hospital giving birth to their son.  Bob was the Buffalo Bills rookie of the year in 1968. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service… but at the age of 25, his life was cut short, and Jan was left on her own to raise their two children. And that's just what she did. 55 years later, Jan is still telling the story of her late husband, Bob Kalsu. How they met, how it was love at first sight, and how they planned to get married in Miami after the Orange Bowl until the head coach at the University of Oklahoma, Chuck Fairbanks, put an end to that. They did get married — after the Orange Bowl — and Bob soon went from being an only child to having 4 brothers-in-law and another 4 sisters-in-law. Jan says Bob loved being part of a big family and took to it with ease and grace. On the Past Our Prime podcast, Jan recounts how she and her 1-year old daughter Jill met with Bob in Hawaii while he was on leave and how he loved his little girl. But she also recalls how loud noises could bring him from a deep sleep back into enemy territory and for a second, understand what her giant of a husband was going through while he was away. Jan says the Bills never forgot Bob and put his number 61 in their Wall of Fame on his birthday 25 years ago. The mother of two, and grandmother of nine lives a happy life in Oklahoma and tries not to play the ‘what if' game when it comes to Bob. He made a commitment to serve, and, being a man of his word, he honored that commitment, and Jan's Catholic faith helped her deal with his decision, and the tragic results of it as best she could. It's a powerful talk with a normal woman who went through a very abnormal time and 55 years later, can talk with pride, laugh with ease, and reminisce about a man, a husband, a father, and a soldier… who just happened to also be a football player. Before there was Pat Tillman, there was Bob Kalsu… hear his story from the woman who knew him best of all… his wife, Jan Kalsu on the Past Our Prime podcast. In Part 2 of this week's episode of Next on the Tee, I'm joined by someone quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite guests—Bill Mallon. Bill's remarkable journey through golf, medicine, and the story of tickets to the 1980 Winter Olympics that he gave to his father, is one you won't want to miss. A former standout amateur and 2x All-American at Duke, Bill captured 43 amateur titles, including the Massachusetts and New England Amateurs twice each. He played on the PGA Tour from 1975 to 1979 and teed it up in the 1977 U.S. Open at Southern Hills—an event made unforgettable by winner Hubert Green playing through death threats, a moment Bill experienced firsthand. After his time on Tour, Bill returned to Duke for medical school and went on to become one of the country's top orthopedic surgeons. He also shares an unforgettable story about the time he and Gary McCord set the PGA Tour record for the fastest round ever played—finishing in just 1 hour and 26 minutes at Harbour Town in 1977, a developing story that caught the attention of TV cameras and eventually Commissioner Deane Beman. We also dive into Bill's passion as an Olympic historian, including a powerful and emotional story about gifting his father tickets to the 1980 Winter Olympics to see speed skating legend Eric Heiden—a moment that would become part of his father's final words years later. This is an episode filled with incredible stories, heartfelt moments, and the kind of perspective only someone like Bill Mallon can bring.

All American presidents since 1945 have been managers of the USA's global economic empire, Trump notionally fulfils the same role but has little or no understanding of the complexities, challenges and limitations that his predecessors have had to navigate. As with all narcissists, he sees America's crises through the prism of his own personal experience. The last 24 hours of White House reality TV shows us once again that the economic and ideological factors that have propelled Trump to the Oval Office twice have corroded the structures of American power probably beyond repair. Trump's predecessors had their dramas but the idea that they would have consciously created this manner of circus from them is inconceivable. As managers of empire they were far more discrete. Both the system of imperial management and the empire itself are in terminal decline. *****STOP PRESS*****I only ever talk about history on this podcast but I also have another life, yes, that of aspirant fantasy author and if that's your thing you can get a copy of my debut novel The Blood of Tharta, right here:Help the podcast to continue bringing you history each weekIf you enjoy the Explaining History podcast and its many years of content and would like to help the show continue, please consider supporting it in the following ways:If you want to go ad-free, you can take out a membership hereOrYou can support the podcast via Patreon hereOr you can just say some nice things about it here Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/explaininghistory. To date, 26 states have enacted laws banning transgender youth from participating in sports teams consistent with their gender identity. There is so much fear and misinformation around this topic, and today In the Den Sara sits down with the incredible Chris Mosier, the first openly transgender man to earn a spot on a U.S. Men's National Team. Chris and Sara talk about the reality of trans people in sports and what we can do to better understand and support the trans athletes in our lives and in the country.Special Guest: Chris MosierChris Mosier is a trailblazing athlete, coach, and founder of TransAthlete.com, the leading resource for transgender inclusion in sport. LB is short for "Lil Bro." Michael Loomis is my 3rd guest from the Man Overseas Retreat in Costa Rica. Michael & I have logged hundreds of hours on the phone, and I couldn't wait to finally meet him. Plus, he reminds me a lot of a younger Man, hence the nickname—except he's a lot taller and a little better-lookin'.In this episode, we talk about his journey from Portland to Nashville, his faith that's shaped who he is today. Then we go even deeper—he opens up about what it was like growing up with a mother who struggled with alcoholism & mental health issues, how that's affected his view of love, reckoning with abandonment issues, and what forgiveness really looks like.As a former collegiate basketball All-American, LB has strong opinions on the GOAT debate. He tells a story about sitting next to Danny Ainge at the SEC tournament a few months ago—if you love the NBA, you'll appreciate this one. From Kobe's mindset to Michael Jordan to Anthony Edwards' rise, this episode has plenty for hoops-junkies.

Cory welcomes back Coach Alex Popp, one of prep basketball's most respected voices, now the new head coach at The Winchendon School in Massachusetts. With a background that includes leading Vermont Academy, five years at powerhouse IMG Academy, and a post-grad playing year at Northfield Mount Hermon, Coach Popp brings unmatched perspective on what it takes for players to thrive in the NEPSAC and beyond. In this candid conversation, Alex breaks down the real factors families must weigh: Should your child chase playing time on a less talented team, or compete for minutes on a stacked roster? How do you find the right academic and athletic fit? And what does true college placement strategy look like in today's transfer portal and NIL era? Coach Popp shares actionable advice on maximizing summer exposure events, the importance of honest self-assessment, and why relationships—not hype—drive recruitment.

From a late start in high school track to becoming one of the fastest milers in NCAA history, today's guest has rewritten the blueprint for distance running success.Gary Martin's rise has been nothing short of electric. After a quiet freshman year at the University of Virginia, he exploded onto the national scene during the 2024 cross country season—capturing the ACC Championship with a course record and finishing 13th at nationals to earn All-American honors. But that was just the beginning. On the track, Gary has been rewriting record books: a 7:36 meet-record win in the 3000m at ACC Indoors, a Virginia school record in the 5000m, and a 3:48 mile at the 2025 Millrose Games—the second-fastest indoor mile in NCAA history. He didn't stop there, anchoring UVA's distance medley relay team to an NCAA-record time of 9:14.And long before college glory, Gary made headlines as a Pennsylvania high schooler when he ran 3:57.98 without a pacer—becoming the first from his state and just the 14th U.S. high schooler ever to break four minutes. With PRs of 3:33 in the 1500m, 3:48 in the mile, 7:36 in the 3K, and 13:16 in the 5K, Gary's resume is as fast as it is fearless. In today's conversation, Gary takes me through his training, recent record-breaking races, his mindset going into NCAA if he'll end his NCAA eligibility to go pro, his take on PA distance running, MJ v Lebron, and his thoughts going into Eugene next month. This one was an absolute blast. Don't miss an inside look at one of the best runners in the country. Tap into the Gary Martin Special.  If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it. Comment the word “PODCAST” below and I'll DM you a link to listen. If this episode blesses you, please share it with a friend!S H O W  N O T E S-The Run Down By The Running Effect (our new newsletter!): https://tinyurl.com/mr36s9rs-BUY MERCH BEFORE IT'S GONE: https://shop.therunningeffect.run-Our Website: https://therunningeffect.run -THE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQ-My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en-Take our podcast survey: https://tinyurl.com/3ua62ffz

If you need to hire 1 person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world have the hustle and grit to deliver. www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader Tom Ryan is the head wrestling coach at Ohio State University. In college, he wrestled for perhaps the greatest wrestling coach of all time, Dan Gable, at Iowa, where he was a two-time Big Ten champion and a two-time NCAA All-American. As a coach at Ohio State, he's won numerous national coach of the year honors, has coached more than 75 All-Americans, and led the Buckeyes to a national championship in 2015. We filmed this in his office in Columbus, OH, after spending the morning watching some of his championship wrestlers practice. It was one of the coolest days I've had in a long time. Notes: “My first workout after driving from Syracuse to Iowa was a soul-cleanser. I collapsed in my car outside the arena. I couldn't stop crying.” "It was a line in the sand moment for me. Where are you going or staying? Because I could have turned around, I could have went right back. But it was this sense of knowing that you were in the right place." It's amazing that Tom decided to leave Syracuse with no guarantee of even making the team at Iowa, let alone a scholarship. He shows up on day 1, and Coach Gable didn't even know who he was! Crazy. And then he goes on to earn his spot and become an All-American. Competitive Spirit from Early Age: "There's certainly an element of competitive spirit... even in second grade, we were on the playground... if you lose, you're fighting somebody. You just wanna win, you wanna win everything you do." Why go to Iowa? The Will to Be Great – "I wanted to be elite at something. And by trial and error, it was almost trial and error... I wasn't gonna end my career with not knowing how high I could climb." Key Learnings from Dan Gable: Emotional Control – "He wasn't a yeller. He wasn't a screamer... The reason why he didn't need to yell was his competence." Focus on Situation, Not Person – "It was never personal... He would focus on the situation and not you as a person. You never felt attacked. It was just bluntly, your single leg needs improvement." Balance of Freedom and Accountability – "Too much freedom. Not good... You can drive someone crazy with discipline and rituals and rules... It's just this happy medium." One of the most emotional moments in my 10+ years of recording this podcast, Tom shared the story of the day his 5-year-old son, Teague, had a heart attack and tragically passed away. The room went silent. And Tom went deep into the impact that it has had on him and his family. This is something I cannot imagine happening. I am grateful that Tom was willing to share and be so vulnerable. I love Tom Ryan, and I am lucky to have been in Columbus with him. The interview with Ohio State: "I wasn't their first choice... But ultimately, I was a leader that had learned. I learned under the best." He prepared extensively, attacked his weaknesses proactively, and wasn't afraid to discuss his faith. Chosen vs. Unchosen Suffering – The concept of "chosen suffering" came after experiencing unchosen suffering (losing Teague). "Wrestling has never brought me to my knees... I never got there in wrestling... but when I lost Teague in 2004, that I referred to as unchosen suffering." Chosen Suffering = Deep Love – "Chosen suffering is a fancy word for love because you will suffer the most for the things you love the most." The willingness to endure difficulty stems from profound love for what you're pursuing. Traits of Elite Performers: Ungodly Effort – "In all studies ever performed on elite behavior... one is an ungodly effort. And I think effort stems from... effort over time is a byproduct of deep love." High Capacity to Learn – Elite athletes have exceptional skill development abilities Living in Truth – "The capacity to live in truth. To really be honest with yourself and be okay with it... really strong self-assessment." Daily Discipline – "The discipline to do it daily... to work on your shortcomings and really be good enough to look in the mirror and say, I love you, but you got some problems." Being Coachable – "Most people wanna be coached until they're getting coached." Great performers actively seek feedback, while good ones want to be left alone. Three-Pronged Leadership Philosophy: Example – Walk the walk and display the behaviors you want to see Truth in Love – "Too much truth can demoralize someone... too much love, you're patronizing me. Stop it. Gimme the truth." Embracing Pain and Suffering – "We're gonna make decisions that weren't right... and we're gonna accept them and we're gonna grow from them." The 3 Success Pillars: Your Mind - Internal you. Where your thoughts originate. Your Relationships - Who you allow to influence your decisions. Your Environment - The setting that will build you or break you. The world doesn't care what we're after, nor does it care about our principles. It doesn't care about you or me, nor will it change for us. It doesn't owe us anything. The world is heading in a direction, spinning on its axis, and there's little we can do to change that. What we can change, however, is what we do. We can control our direction. We must continuously develop our core and worldview to help us navigate the temptations of the world. What happened on the morning of April 23, 2024? Coach Ryan had been on his way to OSU for an early morning workout with colleagues when his SUV, traveling at about 65 miles per hour, struck the semitrailer. Physical Trauma vs. Emotional Trauma – "When we lost Teague, I was healthy, I was physically healthy, I was mentally healthy... when I hit this tractor trailer at full speed... the physical trauma that occurred was surreal. And I wasn't ready." "I went into a terrible depression... I was sad when I lost my son, but I wasn't depressed... But in this, I was suicidal for a little bit." Coach Ryan openly shared his mental health struggles with family and got help. The #1 indicator of sustained success is emotional control. Two-word mantra — keep working. Physical Suffering as Mental Training – "Every single time I bike, there comes a moment in the bike ride where I realize I'm a sissy... there's a humbling, there's humility piece that you get from suffering." Choose the Hard Thing  - "I can always come up with an excuse why I'm not gonna do squats... And then I have to pause and say, dude. Get under the bar... getting under the bar... builds confidence for everything else in life." (that was from me) Discipline as a Superpower – "Discipline is a superpower. It's available to everybody." The transferable skill of choosing difficulty when you don't want to.
