US comedian Anna Akana's tagline might as well be ‘hello darkness my old friend', because she travels into some pretty dark places for her comedy. This included talking about the stalker who hounded her so much she gave up standup for years, her sister's suicide 17 years ago, and that time her dad ran off to fight in Ukraine. In this episode, she chats to our Mick about making that shit funny, her commitment to expanding how we talk about taboo topics and mental health, and making her UK debut with her aptly titled show, It Gets Darker, which you can catch at the Edinburgh Fringe and then London's Leicester Square Theatre. Last year, I opened up on Growth Minds talking about losing my Aunt to suicide when I was 15. A friend linked me to a YouTube video from Anna Akana, who lost her little sister to suicide when she was 17. Coincidentally, both were from the same city in Japan. And both were gone too soon. The unfortunate reality is that seeking mental help is far too stigmatized in our society. Asian-Americans are 3x less likely to seek help than other Americans, and you can see why after hearing Anna’s personal experience. With the surprising event that unfolded this week, Anna’s story is another reminder to us all that life is fragile, and we can lose the ones we love at any point. But this isn’t an entirely sad story. While Anna shares that she didn’t laugh for years after her sister died, you’ll hear plenty of laughs in our ‘off-the-rails’ conversation. From dating as a bisexual, relationship tips, dealing with your depression to rediscovering your self-identity when you feel lost - we go through it all. This was a fun one. Hope you enjoy. ps - go see Anna perform live in NYC on Feb 26: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/anna-akana-tickets-72996643927 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/growth-minds/support

Emmy nominated actress, producer, filmmaker, writer and musician, Anna Akana, is thrilled to unveil her debut music project. She has released the music video to her debut single, “Intervention,” from her forthcoming album, Casualty, expected later this year.Anna says, “Casualty is an album about overcoming, and the first single ‘Intervention’ is about finally facing a decade long battle I've had with alcohol.”On her debut album, Anna Akana takes an unapologetic and uncompromising look at all the battles she’s faced throughout her life, from depression to abuse to toxic relationships. But with the same unstoppable spirit and magnetic presence she’s shown in her self-driven career as an actress, producer, filmmaker, and writer—as well as a social media superstar whose YouTube channel boasts over 2.5 million subscribers—Akana turns all that pain into a message of strength and self-empowerment.Akana is tapping into her filmmaking ingenuity to create videos for each song she plans to release this year. Keep a look out for more music and tour dates to be announced soon.Follow Sidewalk Talk:https://twitter.com/sidewalktalkshw (all updates)https://instagram.com/sidewalktalkpop See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
