In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by author, backpacker, and our resident alien expert, Mike Clelland. We made an honest attempt to discuss ultralight backpacking during this one, and although we do touch on the subject some, the bulk of this conversation is dedicated to owls, aliens, and all things paranormal activity. Mike has become the preeminent expert of the interplay between owls and UFO citings, which may not sound like a thing, however Mike has accrued a lifetime of stories from folks who have experiences that say that it is. If owls and aliens don't sound like your jam, we encourage you to give this one a shot, as Mike's long standing intense passion for these subjects turns out to be awfully contagious; Chaunce and I are thoroughly entertained. We also discuss the pros and cons of traditional vs. self-publishing, which Mike has done both, but really this is mostly aliens and owls.  Warning: This episode includes discussions of rape, death, and child loss in the context of aliens. If any of these topics are triggering, we encourage you to skip this interview. We wrap the show with the news that the Backpacker Radio crew is headed to AT Trail Days, news of a woman who set the overall FKT on the Florida Trail, Knorr Side recipe recommendations, the shortest roast in the history of roasts, what animal we'd train to be our hiking companion, the triple crown of memes, dog's cornchip paws, and more. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Austen McDaniel, known on trail as PI. If that name sounds familiar, it's because we've been reading it off at the end of every episode for years, as Austen is one of our Chuck Norris Award-winning Patreon supporters.  But in addition to being a longtime patron, Austen is also one hell of a backpacker, having completed the Triple Crown in three consecutive years. He approached his first thru-hike as prepared as anyone we've ever talked to, hitting the Appalachian Trail with a six-pound base weight after years of fine-tuning his setup on various shakedown hikes. He walks us through how he's managed to shave additional ounces and grams off his pack, shares some fun ultralight hacks, and offers tips for making cold soaking suck less. Of course, we also dive deep into his three thru-hikes.  Beyond hiking, Austen gives us a glimpse into his life as a professional tennis instructor, if he's seducing moms at the country club, and how he managed to squeeze in some disc golf in various trail towns during his CDT trek.  We wrap the show with news of an massive new FKT on New Zealand's Te Araroa, a breakdown of just how much Irish heritage runs through our DNA, including some truly deranged family tree math from Chaunce, the triple crown of food combinations, and possibly the greatest limerick in the history of the written language. Katie also gives some of her backpacking hot takes, including how the Colorado Trail is superior to the JMT. The Clean Energy Revolution
Powering the world with wind: just how close are we?

The Clean Energy Revolution

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2024 37:21

The Global Wind Energy Council forecasts that, with sustained policy support and investment, global wind capacity could reach 2,000 GW by 2030. This would be a significant contribution to net zero goals, so what does this sustained policy support look like? Where does the investment need to go, and where are we seeing innovation in the sector? On The Clean Energy Revolution, Carolyn and Laura explore the policy, technological advancements, investment needs, and the pivotal role of international cooperation in developing wind power. Laura is in Bilbao at the WindEurope annual conference. WindEurope, formerly the European Wind Energy Association, represents manufacturers, suppliers, utilities, developers and research institutes to develop and advocate for wind power in Europe. Giles Dickson is CEO, and he joins Laura as the conference gets underway. Together they highlight the role of the North Sea as a pivotal energy hub for Europe, as Giles talks about the need for increased cooperation among North Sea bordering countries to maximize the region's wind energy potential. What does the wind sector look like on the East side of the Atlantic? Meanwhile, Carolyn is in New York, with Will Hazelip, President of National Grid Ventures for the U.S. Northeast, to discuss the outlook for wind power in the region. Wind power in the US has seen substantial growth in the last two decades; 6 terawatt-hours in 2000 to 434 in 2022. What's the potential for growth over the next decade, and beyond? Major projects such as South Fork Wind Farm and Vineyard Wind show the scale of ambition in the north-east, and the progress that's being made to the 30GW target for 2030 set by the Biden administration. Carolyn and Will examine the state cooperation and policy support for offshore wind projects – projects that are perfectly placed to provide New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC with firm, reliable clean energy. As of the end of 2022, the UK's offshore wind capacity stood at over 10 GW, contributing significantly to the country's renewable energy mix. The UK government aims to add an extra 40 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 to meet increasing electricity demands and sustainability goals. Across Europe, the goal is 300 GW by 2030. The main talking points to come out of the WindEurope event, as Laura explains, are the complexities of scaling wind energy, the necessity of robust commercial frameworks, the impact of NIMBYism, and the crucial aspect of community engagement in wind projects.Katie Jackson, President of NGV, and Matt Hinde, Head of European Affairs, also join this episode to explore these key points: the critical need for substantial investment and development in wind energy to meet future electricity demands, the importance of state cooperation and international collaboration to harness wind power effectively, and the significant challenges posed by supply chain issues, regulatory hurdles, and community opposition.

This shock led to a now national food box service delivering wonky (but great) produce to people, and has so far saved more than 2 million kilograms of food going to waste. This webinar will host a debate over the pending amendments to Federal Rule of Evidence 702, which governs the admissibility of expert testimony. In August 2021, the federal judiciary’s Advisory Committee on Evidence Rules published proposed amendments to Rule 702 to include within the text of the rule language directly stating that the proponent of expert testimony must establish each of Rule 702’s elements by a preponderance of the evidence. Currently, Rule 702 does not explicitly include a preponderance standard, but merely cross-references the preponderance standard included under another evidentiary rule. A year’s worth of research into federal cases analyzing the current Rule 702 reveals that some courts apply a preponderance standard while others apply a more relaxed policy favoring admissibility. The Advisory Committee will host a public hearing on January 21, 2022, and those wishing to testify are asked to reserve a spot 30 days in advance. The Committee is also accepting public comments on the proposed amendment until February 16, 2022.The webinar discussion will be moderated by Leah Lorber, Assistant General Counsel of Dispute Resolution and Prevention at GSK. Participants will include Lee Mickus, a Partner at Evans, Fears & Schuttert, who has written and spoken extensively in support of Rule 702 reforms; David Wool, a Partner at the Wagstaff Law Firm who has litigated Rule 702 and Daubert issues extensively and questioned the need for the proposed amendment; and Katie Jackson, an Associate at Shook, Hardy & Bacon and Fellow with Lawyers for Civil Justice who has conducted research regarding the courts’ application of Rule 702.Here is a link to a webpage with several Rule 702 resources for those wishing to file a comment, testify at the hearing, or simply learn more about the proposed amendments. What are some of the recent initiatives from EU and UK regulators that firms need to watch? Can financial services start-ups and challengers sometimes be caught off-guard by the difficulty of managing the risk of financial crime? How are firms deploying new technologies to more innovatively manage their anti-money laundering activities?

We’re on location at Petco Park and taped this episode at the recent Padres vs. Mariners game. This week’s special guest is Katie Jackson, vice president of marketing for the San Diego Padres. Katie has been with the Padres for 5 years and oversees all the brand partnerships at the ballpark. She talks about the Party in the Park series—a huge themed happy hour event during every Friday home game—and the drink specials you can get for $5. Her pick for Two People, $50, is The Crack Shack, and the staff liked Realm of the 52 Remedies and Bankers Hill Bar and Restaurant. In Hot Plates, we talked about the owners of Board & Brew and chef Alex Carballo opening Casero Taqueria in The Square in Bressi Ranch near Carlsbad. The Hotel Del is getting a new oceanfront restaurant in June, Serea, which is replacing 1500 Ocean and will be run by local chef JoJo Ruiz (the executive chef at Lionfish) and focus on sustainable seafood, letting guests pick their fresh catch of the day. Akira Back, a Michelin-starred chef with restaurants in Las Vegas, Seoul, Toronto and Singapore, is opening his first restaurant in San Diego, Lumi by Akira Back, in the Gaslamp. It will be a rooftop space on the corner of Fifth Avenue and J Street, and you can expect elevated sushi and sashimi. David’s 60 Second Beer Review this week is Tail & Tooth, a collaboration from Coronado Brewing and Belching Beaver—David enjoyed this hazy IPA, even though he confesses he’s normally not a fan of Belching Beaver’s beers (listen to find out why!) This week’s Hot Topic is about Instagram: Is the photography aesthetic made popular by the app and its influencers—like poses in front of pink walls, artfully arranged avocado toast—over? A recent article in The Atlantic says yes, but Troy has an interesting counterpoint.

Preliminary data shows that by targeting the mutant allele, the CAG repeat can be knocked down as much as 20 points. WAVE says their promise is, "Our dedication to excellence in drug development is grounded in our long-term commitment to patients. We will strive to be a true partner to advocacy organizations and patient communities, ensuring that we understand their specific challenges and needs. Five years ago I never dreamed that we would be closing in on 100 thousand listeners and 220 episodes. I am so proud and happy to be able to introduce amazing guests to you on each show that we do. Tonight is no exception. We have an incredible, intelligent and brilliant research scientist with us Dr. Kyle Fink, who is working with Dr. Jan Nolta in her Lab at the UC Davis IRC. He is working on research to prepare the very first ever Juvenile Huntington’s Disease Research Initiative with stem cell. Tonight we get to meet Dr. Fink and learn all about his work in Jan’s Lab. All of our hopes and fears lie with getting research funded through all the phases of clinical trials and to the market for our loved one who are suffering from this horrendous disease. Help4HD is taking a stand to support JHD research. Our very own President Katie Jackson held our first Help4JHD Kids Walk in June which was amazing. We were able to raise a small amount of money for Dr. Fink’ research. We know that without research and clinical trials, none of us will have a chance to help our HD community with treatments, therapies or the cure, so I hope there is someone listening out there who can help us too. Monday, November 28, 2011– Our incredible special guest tonight is Katie Jackson, author of Ferris Wheel and advocate extraordinaire for Huntington's disease. Katie is an inspiring author in Sacramento, California and she began writing Ferris Wheel in 2006.    Although Ferris Wheel is a fiction novel, many of the events in the book are actual experiences of the author. In 2006, Katie Jackson's husband Michael discovered that he carried the same genetic neurological disease as his biological father; that of Huntington's disease. Today there is no cure for Huntington's disease and as can be expected, the diagnosis was life shattering and turned their lives upside down. Katie soon found that writing was the only way in which she could effectively cope with her husband's diagnosis. Katie and Michael now have two beautiful children, Cooper and Madison, and currently reside in Northern California.
