A singer-songwriter and former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs, Bob Schneider is one of the most-celebrated musicians in Austin. Combining diverse styles, Schneider's music spans genres, blending elements of folk, rock, rap, funk, bluegrass, reggae and country with the more traditional singer/songwriter aesthetic. Schneider has won more than 59 Austin Music Awards including: Best Album, Best Songwriter, Best Musician, and Best Male Vocals making him the most decorated artist in Austin's music history. He started gaining national recognition with his major-label debut Lonelyland. A fiercely-independent artist, Schneider opted to start his own label, Shockorama Records, which has afforded him the freedom to make the music his fans love, on his own terms. Schneider's live performances, both solo and with the band, are legendary. He has two appearances on the Austin City Limits television show and is also in the 20th year of his residency at The Saxon Pub. Bob is also an accomplished visual artist who transforms found visual media into thought-provoking works of art that challenge the viewer's perceptions of contemporary and popular culture. He juxtaposes iconic figures from comic books and other mass media and places them in everyday situations, leaving the viewer to interpret the meaning of the artwork. By appropriating old and valuable books, often intended for mass consumer consumption, Schneider creates something unique and personal for each viewer.

In the fall of 2005, four musicians—Ed Jurdi, Gordy Quist, Brian Keen and Colin Brooks—all had residencies at Momo's, the since-shuttered music club on West 6th Street in Austin, Texas. Ultimately, the four songwriters found themselves jamming each week, sharing a bill in what was lightly called “The Good Time Supper Club” on the Momo's stage. It became a local staple of the thriving Austin music scene and the stage became “an extended hang,” as Quist noted, somewhat joking that the performances “specialized in tequila and trainwrecks.” He said it was, “a good time for cutting our teeth on danger and taking chances on music and experiencing the magic that comes from that.” After a misprint in a local newspaper billed the act as "The Heathens," the collective became known as “The Band of Heathens”—our latest guests on The Load Out Music Podcast. Over a 16-month-period, the group began to galvanize into what would become what remains a force today in Americana-driven rock-and-roll. Now led by Jurdi and Quist, The Band of Heathens has built one of the most dedicated followings for an independent act worldwide. “It was exciting,” said Jurdi of those formative years. “Everything was very new at that point. So, we were sort of sharing in all these experiences together.” There was an unquestioned magic that they all could sense, even in the beginning. The band's first recording, Live from Momo's, brought the band national attention and they were voted "Best New Band" at the 2007 Austin Music Awards. “The fact that we received ‘Best New Band' was a nice reflection of Austin and the scene and the collaboration of the scene,” Jurdi said. Ultimately, the great Ray Wylie Hubbard—a past guest on The Load Out—signed on to produce The Band of Heathens' self-titled first record. “Ray is a legend and is a great guy,” Quist said.” He took us under his wing and said, like, ‘let me show you how to make a good record.' He specializes in vibe and cool.”

AISD schools see a drop in expected attendance on yesterday's first day back after the holiday. A free COVID testing site opens today at the Toney Burger Center, no appointments or insurance required. Health experts hope for a rapid fall in the Omicron wave, potentially ending within eight weeks. Today is the first anniversary of the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol - 63 Texans including several from the Austin area are facing charges related to the event. Natural gas supplies saw a 25% drop during last week's strong but typical cold front, leading to renewed fears that the Texas power grid is not ready for another winter storm similar to last February's disaster. Mayor Steve Adler is one of a group of Texas mayors joining forces to lobby the U.S. Senate for new laws negating new voting access restrictions in Texas and other Republican-led states. The Austin real estate market drops to 10th hottest in the country, while research from U-Haul also indicates a cooling of the local housing scene. Austin Pets Alive is suffering a staffing shortage due to COVID and needs help fostering 50 dogs. The Water 2 Wine winery in New Braunfels takes home five awards from the Texas International Wine Competition. The owners of the Mean Eyed Cat, Lala's and The Wheel have acquired downtown speakeasy Midnight Cowboy. The Austin Chronicle opens voting for this year's Austin Music Awards. The three original principal songwriters - Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist - shared the bill at Momo's, an Austin club.[1] Originally, each singer/songwriter performed his own set. However, they eventually started sharing the stage, and collaborating with bassist Seth Whitney. The Wednesday night series was billed as "The Good Time Supper Club". A misprint in a local paper billed the act as "The Heathens." Drummer John Chipman joined the band in 2007, and Keyboardist Trevor Nealon, who played in the studio during the recording of both "One Foot in the Ether" and "Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster's Son", joined the touring unit in 2011.Their first recording, "Live from Momo's", recorded at the now closed club on West 6th Street in Austin brought the band national attention and they were voted "Best New Band" at the 2007 Austin Music Awards. Following the Momo's release, the band released a second live recording, the CD/DVD "Live at Antone's" which was recorded at the venerable Austin club.May 20, 2008 the band released their first, self-titled, studio album. Produced by Ray Wylie Hubbard, and featuring notable guests Patty Griffin, Stephen Bruton, and Gurf Morlix, the record went to #1 on the Americana Music Association's radio charts. In November 2008 the album was ranked 8th place on the Americana Music Association's Top 100 Albums of the Americana Charts for 2008.[2]In July 2009 BOH taped an Austin City Limits show that aired in the Fall of 2009. The year was especially significant for ACL in that Austin City Limits was celebrating its 35th anniversary year. The band's unique genesis and creativity were highlighted during the Austin City Limits interview conducted after their performance.[3] The TV performance showcased a set by both the Band Of Heathens and Elvis Costello.[4]

For our 40th episode we chat with Austin-based guitarist, singer and songwriter, Jelly Ellington. Originally from Asheville, NC, Jelly took an early interest in music after being exposed to the Los Angeles guitar quartet. He began playing classical guitar at age seven and eventually gravitated to electric guitar after hearing Led Zeppelin as a teen. Jelly has been a staple of the Austin music scene since relocating in 2011, he has shared the stage and recorded with Grammy Award-winning artists, and was voted Top 10 Best Guitarist by the Austin Music Awards for both 2018 and 2019. We talk about the plethora of amazing artists Austin's scene has to offer, the recent snowpocalypse, the effects the pandemic has had on venues, some iconic spots in the city, and get a little backstory on Jelly's gorgeous meaty blue Les Paul. Other topics include Netflix shows, standup comics, influences and gear, Boogie Nights and Glory (go watch it), and Tiger Woods' peculiar facial expressions. Skunk insults "artists" he doesn't approve of (as usual), and Jelly confesses to a dirty little bro country secret and "dumps" a zinger of story on us. Jelly currently records and performs both original music and plays with the Zeppelin tribute band Dancing Days. He also recently collaborated and recorded with Sam Houston Black Odyssey at 512 Studios here in Austin. Since its inception in 2012, Jelly's Monthly Guitar Jam has featured a variety of stellar Texas guitarists and raised nearly 5K for local non-profits such as the SIMS Foundation. Gary Clark Jr. got his first guitar for Christmas back when he was just 12 years old and the Austin, Texas native has been playing around his hometown ever since. But with a breakout performance at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2010, Clark Jr. netted not only a manager, but a recording deal with Warner Bros. In the time since Gary Clark Jr.'s 2012 major label debut, Blak And Blu, he's played with Mick Jagger and blues legend B.B. King for the President at the White House, opened for The Rolling Stones, and played with Alicia Keys and The Roots. That album also scored big at his home town Austin Music Awards, winning eight awards, including musician and album of the year. He's since released both 2015's The Story of Sonny Boy Slim and the 2019 album, This Land, which ranges from Delta blues to dub reggae, Stax-style soul anthems and Prince-like epics. Gary Clark Jr.'s scorching and gritty blues rock sound frequently draws comparisons to guitar legends like Jimi Hendrix. He plays an acoustic set in-studio, and talks with host John Schaefer about growing up in Austin, why he doesn't play a Stratocaster, and the inspiration behind his song "Bright Lights." (From the Archives, 2013.) Set List: "When My Train Pulls In" "Bright Lights" "Next Door Neighbor Blues"

In this episode I'm joined by the legendary Bob Schneider, an Austin-based musician, producer, visual artist, and podcaster. Bob has won 58 Austin Music Awards to date, and has been a resident at the Lonelyland Saxon Pub for 20 years now, where he plays every week. He is the host of two podcasts, I'm OK You're OK, I'm Not OK, You're Not OK, and The Song Club. Bob Schneider's most recent album Blood & Bones was released in 2018. I brought in some home-made breakfast tacos, and we went on chatting for almost two hours. We talked about many things, from what kind of food Bob like to eat, how it was to be a musician on the KISS Cruise, how he tried to bury a deer once, to how much music awards mean to him. Although we didn't get to eat the tacos in the end from too much talking, we had some great laughs and an awesome conversation. Time stamps: 1:00 – Introducing the guest, Bob Schneider, and the food we're eating 4:05 – When was when we first tried drugs and alcohol 8:08 – The most expensive food we've ever eaten 10:44 – Bob's attitude towards food 15:20 – Bob's favourite fast food 19:30 – What Bob eats when he's on the road 20:03 – Our attitudes towards vegan diet 26:25 – How it feels to play on a KISS cruise 35:02 – Cursing on stage and how it's perceived in the music industry 39:30 – The status of Bob's new album 43:35 – Bob's weekly residency at Lonelyland Saxon Pub as a way to be a better musician 49:50 – Bob's approach to music awards 56:10 – The story about deers on Bob's property 1:00:25 – Racoons, rats and snakes 1:05:25 – How Bob achieves balance between music, art and everything he does 1:10:55 – How Bob writes his songs and how he performs them 1:13:25 – The relationship between music and visual arts 1:16:01 – Cake or pie 1:20:00 – Giraffes, zebras, camels 1:24:00 – Why talking in the crowd over a music set is so annoying for musicians 1:28:44 – Rapid fire questions Resources: Lonelyland Saxon Pub Rachael Ray Show Jack In The Box Long John Silver's Taco Shack Torchy's Tacos Tacodeli Franklin BBQ Salt Lick BBQ Rudy's BBQ Nothing Bundt Cakes Texas Real Food Connect with Bob Schneider: https://www.bobschneider.com/ Connect with Patrick Scott Armstrong: Instagram Facebook

He has swept previous Austin Music Awards and even won a Grammy. Soon out of the gates, he was cast and stared alongside Danny Glover in a move, "Honeydripper" from 2007. Over the past few years and on the festival circuit, he has enjoyed a lot of success. And this past year, he played the many late night shows, performing, my favorite song of 2019: "This Land". He lives on his land in Kyle. One certain nosy neighbor came poking around his property and inadvertently became the muse for the song. There is a radio edit version of the song, but it takes a little bit of the punch out of it. So let's hear how Gary intended this song to be in all of it's glory, as he recorded in the Freddy Fletcher's Arlyn Studios on the legendary NEVE recording console, similar to the one highlighted in Dave Grohl's "Sound City" documentary from 2013. Actually, this very NEVE console was featured with both Grohl and Clark in episode 4 of the Foo Fighters Sonic Highways documentary program. Here it is, protect your land! Here is "This Land" from this year's album of the same name. This is the state of Modern Blues in 2019!. That song "The Governor" was included, as they were together in the great video for "This Land", check it out! And there were many references to his Governor in "This Land". And he is not referring to the Texas Governor who just late yesterday threatened the City of Austin to intervene over some questions about how this land can be used in our city. He is talking about a different kind of "Governor' that most other Texans are well aware of... Gary plays tonight and tomorrow night at Stubb's BBQ, which just 2 days ago won a settlement to remain named Stubb's BBQ. Holding up the handshake deal that C.B. Stubblefield would have wanted. And rather than being renamed to the Austin favorite, Liberty Lunch, that closed in the 90's. Then this Saturday, next Friday and next Saturday he will be playing at the 17th annual Austin City Limits (ACL) music festival held in Zilker Park which is held on two consecutive three-day weekends in Austin, TX. Enjoy those "Bright Lights", here from 2011. Oh and by the way Gary Clark Jr's cousin, W.C. Clark, the 'godfather of Austin blues' plays a Happy Hour set every Wednesday at the Tavern on Main in Buda, be sure to check him out! The Late Great Daniel Johnston passed away last week on September 11. He was an artist. A musician; singer/songwriter. And an inspiration to many. And he has a crazy story! Featured in probably the best documentary that I have ever seen; "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" from 2005. And I have been saying this for years. And I watched it again the night that his passing was announced and it still holds up. In a way, Daniel documented his whole life on tape through his own words and music. And along through his other art on paper and through journals, film, and home movies. All of this is complied together and presented, in a way, almost through Daniel's eyes. So really, go out and see it! But here is the essence of his story: He met a girl, Laurie Allen, the love of his life, but she marries and Undertaker. He makes these little tapes of his music, much of it is about his and muse, that girl Laurie, and passes them out. He didn't have one of those boomboxes with 2 cassette tapes, where you could transfer one to the other. Instead, he has to re-record entire albums, singing and playing, then draw the album cover again. Give out a tape, then repeat the process all over again! Daniel joins a traveling circus, but gets stranded in Austin. Here he gets a part-time job as a busser at McDonald's. In 1985, the MTV show "Cutting Edge" comes to town and he crashes the show becoming the most memorable thing on it. That phone at McDonald’s, it starts ringing off the hook with record producers and folks because that was the only place he had reliable access to a phone. Gets into acid with Gibby Haynes from the Butthole Surfers at one of their shows. Retreats a bit, announces his retirement, then leaves Austin around 1987. And he's later diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He gets really into Satan and God; and some bad stuff happens. He plans his comeback in 1990, where his dad flies him down in their 2 seater airplane. At the Austin Music Awards during SXSW, he performs a very short set, then encore. Promptly leaves the venue and flies home. But mid-flight he takes the keys, turning off the engine and throws them out the window. Yeah. The great pilot that his father was avoids the loss of both of their lives with a lucky crash between 2 large trees. He is committed to the Austin State Hospital, the mental hospital. Then complete Nirvana happens, Kurt Cobain starts wearing his shirt. You know, the iconic Austin street art of "Jeremiah the Frog of Innocence" on the Drag. Kurt wears it everywhere for every appearance, interview... everywhere. Here is Kathy McCarty, of the Austin band Glass Eye, she was one of the first people that Daniel met when he arrived in Austin and unbeknownst to her became his 'girlfriend'. She did a whole album of Daniel's songs, here is one that appeared at the end of Richard Linklater's film "Before Sunrise". Afterwards, we'll listen to Daniel from those little tapes. Thanks for listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tiny-curations-deep-dives/message

Not only does Bob Schneider (professional musician and wicked Creative) share his navigation of emotion as he writes music, in this in-depth conversation he also shares personal information about his therapy and recovery with Sue Marriott. He goes on to describe mediocre versus great therapy, how to train your critical brain like your dog, and taking in tons of information like a whale and spitting out “song turds” from his unconscious. Blending anecdotal stories, neuroscience and attachment theory, this interview both entertains and educates. This is a soft Part 2 to our previous Episode 44: Your Brain on Music, How Music Affects Your Mind, Memory and Happiness. If you like this you’ll like that! Bonus section: Sue discusses and you get to hear an extended excerpt of Schneider’s song, “Let the Light In” from an attachment perspective at the end of this episode so stay tuned…. About Bob Schneider: He has won more Austin Music Awards than any other musician, including Best Songwriter, Best Funk Band, Best Bluegrass Band, Best Alternative/Punk Band, Best Musician, Best None of the Above Band J, Best Male Vocals and of course Musician of the Year too many times to count. Let’s be clear, this does not complete his awards list. He’s also an artist and poet aka Wicked Creative, as you can tell he’s an Austin legend. But as you’ll hear in the intro song, “you can call him Bob.” Batman (Live at the Paramount) and Ready Let’s Roll (King Kong) excerpts before and after intro. 2:45 – Bob’s process of song writing and performing when he writes, identify the moment when something pings emotionally and keep heading in that direction. Hot/cold game 4:35 – Left brain and right brain functions, top-bottom processing when creating music. The unexpected is what makes music compelling. Specific feelings of excitement when experiencing something you haven’t experienced before. 7:30 – Music allows you to process life experiences or interpret internal thoughts 11:15 – Excitement comes from the unexpected because our brains as anticipation machines. Oxytocin discussed. Sober song writing. Mindfulness – Just write! 20:50 – Trying to write something profound will prevent you from doing so. Just let the creative part of you do what it wants to do, splash paint etc. Bob believes it’s an amalgamation of everything we’ve sucked in, he’s a whale spitting out song turds. J 23:45 – Bob’s shares his drive to keep writing. Dissociation from feelings and engaging sensitivity in the world. 28:30 – Very personal story of baby by the gutter as a “coherent narrative,” an outcome of self-acceptance and acceptance of others. Mediocre therapists versus fantastic therapists. Acceptance of our imperfections in relationships, goal for those who were raised in less-than-stellar household environments. 36:00 – Bob’s songs: “The Effect”, “The World Exploded Into Love”, “Changing Your Mind” 38:42 – Focus on your self-relationship above everything else. “Stay on your own postage stamp.” Bob shares his experience in therapy. Group therapy allows for side mirrors and references that make you more understanding that these are shared human experiences. In Bob’s experience, group therapy allowed him to grow up from immature emotional reactions. 49:34 – Beginning of wrap up. Bob’s 17-year Monday night residency continues at the Saxon Pub 8:30pm-10:00pm. 51:20 – “Big Blue Sea” and “Let the Light In” Bob’s music shows his emotions, but might not lyrically be based in reality. 1:01:09 – Bonus Episode discussing his song, Let the Light In (Radio Edit), from an attachment perspective. JOHN GORKA AND ELIZA GILKYSON are considered two of the best contemporary Singer/songwriters touring today. These longtime friends recently teamed up with Lucy Kaplansky to form the super folk group Red Horse. The trio's self titled debut CD was released last year and it became an instant folk classic and a big hit with fans. JOHN GORKA is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who was raised in New Jersey and came out of New York City's Greenwich Village folk scene that produced such songwriters as Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin. His award-winning songs have been recorded and performed by such notable artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith and Mary Black. John has recorded eleven solo albums, six on Red House Records. His latest is So Dark You See. ELIZA GILKYSON is a politically minded, poetically gifted singer-songwriter, who has become one of the most respected musicians in roots, folk and Americana circles. The Grammy-nominated artist was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2006, she was recognized with 3 Austin Music Awards and 4 Folk Alliance Music Awards, one of which was for "Song of the Year" for her tune "Man of God." Her latest solo CD is Roses at the End of Time on Red House Records. BLITZ THE AMBASSADOR may seem like an unusual booking for WoodSongs at first glance. The Ghanaian-born, New York-based composer, and producer unleashes psychedelic Afrobeat colors and triple-time rhymes with a lightning-fast mind, the political boldness of Chuck D, and the sixth groove sense of Fela Kuti. All set to swirls of brass, distorted guitars, and the crackle and pop of old amplifiers. However, for his WoodSongs performance, Blitz will be performing a more intimate, stripped down set. Check out his video for "Remembering The Future" to see this talented artist in action as Michael welcomes the show's first hip hop artist and explores the genre's connection to folk music.
CAROLYN WONDERLAND is a musical force equipped with the soulful vocals of Janis Joplin and the guitar slinging skills of Stevie Ray Vaughn. THE DAVID MAYFIELD PARADE is fresh off a performance at Bonnaroo and David is a Grammy-nominated musician and producer. His energy and out and out enthusiasm for performing music are evident at every show whether it's with his former band mates Cadillac Sky, The Avett Brothers, Jessica Lea Mayfield or his own band. Growing up in Kent, Ohio, he was surrounded by bluegrass music. While on the road with his sister Jessica that Avett Brothers, Scott and Seth took notice of Mayfield's musicianship and the three quickly developed a friendship, leading them to invite David to sit in with them dozens of times including their 2010 Bonnaroo & Merlefest sets.

Thank you NUMBERS/┼666┼ By Destroyed For Comfort From Austin Tx Genre Hacker Punk Find Them On SoundCloud Facebook BandCamp YouTube Tumblr Destroyedforcomfort.com Song Link https://soundcloud.com/destroyedforcomfort/numbers-666 Destroyed For Comfort Info Band Members Rani23 Baker + a rotating band of co-conspirators. While many feel comfortable using canned or frozen Electro as their soup base, Destroyed For Comfort prefers to whip up their Electro from scratch, using fresh ingredients. We go heavy on the samples and are not afraid to spice things up in an unconventional way effects-wise, while mixing in traditionally enjoyed flavors like analog synth and 8-bit sounds. Fronted and founded by art-school dropout r*23 (Rani Bakr), DESTROYED FOR COMFORT utilizes both found sound and real-time synthesis to create stompy, noisy, sample-heavy 8-bit hacker-punk that never sounds quite the same way twice, or ever. Disorienting sonic textures and mangled vocals set the tone, complementing surprisingly danceable beats. Performances frequently include backup dancers and projected animation. Interested in meta-meme reprogramming and cheap beer. We'll play in your backyard if you ask us nicely enough. DESTROYED FOR COMFORT has been honored to share the stage with a veritable who's who of independent and experimental electronic music over the past decade, including (but not limited to) acts like Author And Punisher, Bozo Porno Circus, CeVin Key, Cry Blood Apache, The Emotron, Eric Archer, Femme Fatality, I Cactus, Juiceboxxx, Krista Muir, Ludivico Technique, Malekko, Martin Rev, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Otto Von Schirach, Peelander Z, Realicide, The Subliminator, Talmadge D'Amour, and Yip Yip. DESTROYED FOR COMFORT has also performed remix work for Houston Bernard, Suicide God Pill, and Christopher Anton, with more to come soon. DESTROYED FOR COMFORT has devoted several of their performances to benefits for non-profit, activist, and relief services such as the SIMS Foundation, Locks Of Love, The Livestrong Foundation, the Green Party, Anti-Racist Action, and the ACLU, as well as relief efforts for Katrina victims and the citizens of Darfur. We've also performed at benefits for independent music venues and the Texas Rollerderby jeerleader team Bomb Squad. The movement, the progression of thought. An unlimited outlook on the possibility of becoming whole. We communicate the view of the world as it is, what it has been, and what it could be with a true understanding of what it is to be free. Not an illusion of freedom. We are not free, we are all oppressed, oppressed by the history of humanity. Emily's Gone Mad has over time progressed changed and re invented themselves time and time again. We epitomize the idea of forward motion. We are not boasting to be arrogant we merely say this to inspire to an uncompromising principle to evolve to a perfectly chaotic conclusion. Emily's Gone Mad a band with an idea. Change our world express an idea of forward motion. This is who we are. NO genre. NO clique. Just music. A free expression of our hearts our minds, and our views of the world we live in. Nothing in art, music, literature, or life is unique. It is the idea behind the art that is the only thing unique. All chords have been played all things have been painted, everything has been written, we are all repeating what we know. The only way true uniqueness can be found is through exploring all avenues. That's what Emily's Gone MAd does. "We hold to nothing, but our will to explore. We mean what we write we live the life we have been given." Emilys Gone Mads Music is a solid expression of this mentality Emilys Gone Mad wraps their social views into an electric synth rock that has become EGM's signature sound. With over four albums written and two released their sound has evolved into a sound that is unique and distinct. EGM is a hark back to the core root of what Gothic,Industrial, Punk, and Glam was with a love of technology and all that it can achieve in music. Masterminded by singer/producer Johnny X with additional production by Don Jon, the band's sound is undeniably their own breed of swaggering sexy electroclash. The band released their smashing debut Chronic Electronic in early 2012 and in early 2014 released the self titled EP Dead Love Club, which include video singles “Lies” and “Lover”. Featuring the succulently seductive Emmy “Ferocious E” Robbin (Machete Kills, Sin City 2) on vocals, the shredding guitar of Kriss St. Kriss and hot new drummer Rona Rougeheart (Gretsch Drums Artist)…DEAD LOVE CLUB is simply “the” shit.
