My guests this month are Dr. Bernd-Christian Otto and Andrea Centore, co-founders of the Research Network for the Study of Esoteric Practices, otherwise known as RENSEP. In this discussion, Bernd and Andrea talk about how this network came to be, why it was created, and the exciting work that they are doing. As the name suggests, RENESP is focused on working with practitioners in all areas of esotericism, and fostering the relationships between academic research and real-life practitioners. RENSEP is still in its early stages, having officially launched in 2023, and is a unique resource for both researchers and those outside of academia who are interested to interact with scholars, as well as to help educate the public about esoteric practices. Bernd-Christian Otto (b. 1976) is a scholar of religion. After gaining his PhD in 2009 at the university of Heidelberg (Germany) with an extensive study on the conceptual history of magic, Otto pursued his academic career at various universities, among them Heidelberg, Erfurt, Bochum, Leipzig, Erlangen (Germany) and Bergen (Norway). Otto is co-founder and permanent fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies ‘Alternative Rationalities and Esoteric Practices from a Global Perspective' at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (www.cas-e.de); he is a board member of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (www.esswe.org); and he is co-founder, trustee and scientific director of the Research Network for the Study of Esoteric Practices (www.rensep.org). Otto's research focuses on magic and esotericism, where he combines different methodologies such as conceptual history, discourse analysis, social theory, ritual studies, qualitative interviews, participant observation, and practitioner-scholarship. His book publications include "Defining Magic: A Reader" (Routledge 2013), co-edited with Michael Stausberg; the duograph "Magical Manuscripts in Early Modern Europe: The Clandestine Trade in Illegal Book Collections" (Palgrave MacMillan 2017), co-authored with Daniel Bellingradt; and the anthology "Fictional Practice: Magic, Narration and the Power of Imagination" (Brill 2021), co-edited with Dirk Johannsen. Andrea Centore holds a master's degree in Translation Studies from the University of Mons-Hainaut (Belgium), and a master's degree in Religious Studies from the University of Amsterdam. His research explores the intersection of Jewish and Islamic esotericism through the perspectives of intellectual and global history, with a particular focus on Kabbalah and Sufi lettrism. In addition, Andrea has engaged with texts from a wide range of esoteric traditions including Islamicate occultism, strands of Western esotericism, and Nāth Tantric Yoga. He is the co-founder and managing director of the Research Network for the Study of Esoteric Practices (RENSEP), where one of his key aims is to foster a more systematic dialogue between the academic community and esoteric practitioners. Andrea is also an entrepreneur in the professional services sector.  We take a look at the website, and the different options available to the members. Not only are there blog posts and research updates available, but members can also take part in study groups and take part in livestreams with scholars and practitioners alike (titled “ask a scholar” and “ask a practitioner”). Another great opportunity is the ability to meet new people, forming connections with other members to foster communication and learning, growing one's own network of contacts in the process. RENSEP has also just launched an open-access, peer-review journal, too, called Praxis-Knowledge! RENSEP is a fantastic place to share and learn with other people with similar interests, and is one-of-a-kind with regard to online communities that offer grounded, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed research and a wonderful platform for practitioners to engage with scholars and others who share the same interests. Bernd and Andrea have also very generously offered a 50% discount on membership for all viewers/listeners of Rejected Religion! Use the promo code RR50 when signing up at www.rensep.org! Patreon members also receive special discounts -- Tiers 1& 2 get 70% off on membership, and Tiers 3 & 4 get a FREE membership! This is a fabulous opportunity to join and start learning about esoteric practices, with access to information and resources that usually only are available to those within academia! Members can find their promo codes on the Patreon page. The Great Simplification with Nate Hagens
Kevin Anderson: "The Uncomfortable Link between Climate and Equity"

The Great Simplification with Nate Hagens

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 2, 2023 88:00

On this episode, Nate is joined by climate scientist Kevin Anderson to discuss the possible paths of averting severe climate outcomes and how this is interconnected with equity. As nations plan their climate goals and coordinate with each other, it's clear that extreme actions would be needed from everyone to meet the goal of keeping the global average temperature increase below 2ºC - if this is even possible. At the same time, there are wide disparities in the greenhouse gas emissions between the materially wealthiest and poorest within and across countries. How are past inequities already affecting people in presently climate impacted zones? How can concerned individuals begin incorporating changes and communicating with others in their own lives - and is it even worth it to do so? How can we attempt to balance the equity in standards of living and create rapid reductions in emissions, all while grappling with growing geopolitical tensions, declining energy availability, and the multitude of other converging risks in this impending poly-crisis. The Seattle Aquarium is expanding to include sharks from Indonesia. Is this for the entertainment value or is there an educational component as well? What is the role of aquariums regarding public education, anyway?  Is it to appreciate and have empathy for the fish, otters, seals, penguins, etc. or motivate conservation and sustainable behavior? At the same time, Seattle's sister city in Norway (Bergen) is planning to completely rebuild the National Aquarium in a new location. Join us as we visit the Bergen Aquarium to ask these questions about the role of the aquariums today.  First we take a tour with zookeeper Joachim Ekeli to hear about flatfish, the national fish, penguins, the "flowers of the sea", and the tall ship, Statsraad Lemkuhl, sailing the world on the One Ocean Expedition.  Then we meet the aquarium's CEO, Aslak Sverdrup, to learn the history of the aquarium and its connection to the Institute of Marine Research. Who owns the aquarium now, how will a new one get built, and where will it be? What will it take to get all the various jurisdictions, including business, industry, academia, and the public onboard, to build the World Ocean Center known simply as "O"?  This podcast is a combination of fascinating marine biology, a study in how humans affect their environment, and the political will and fortitude necessary to create an even better National Aquarium in the future.  Check out our links and photos at our episode website at nordicontap.com so see Joachim, Aslak, the Lemkuhl, and other neat things.

Eating prunes may help protect against bone loss in older women Penn State University, February 9, 2022 It's already well known that prunes are good for your gut, but new Penn State research suggests they may be good for bone health, too. In a research review, the researchers found that prunes can help prevent or delay bone loss in postmenopausal women, possibly due to their ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which contribute to bone loss. “In postmenopausal women, lower levels of estrogen can trigger a rise of oxidative stress and inflammation, increasing the risk of weakening bones that may lead to fractures,” said Connie Rogers, associate professor of nutritional sciences and physiology. “Incorporating prunes into the diet may help protect bones by slowing or reversing this process.” (NEXT) Can correcting micronutrient deficiencies help treat heart failure?  University Medical Center Groningen (Netherlands), February 9, 2022 A review published in the Journal of Internal Medicine provides convincing evidence that micronutrients—including iron, selenium, zinc, copper, and coenzyme Q10—can impact the function of cardiac cells' energy-producing mitochondria to contribute to heart failure. The findings suggest that micronutrient supplementation could represent an effective treatment for heart failure. “Micronutrient deficiency has a high impact on mitochondrial energy production and should be considered an additional factor in the heart failure equation, moving our view of the failing heart away from “an engine out of fuel” to “a defective engine on a path to self-destruction,” said co–lead author Nils Bomer, PhD, of the University Medical Center Groningen. (NEXT) Could meditation reduce brain aging? University of California-Los Angeles   February 7, 2022  It is common knowledge that the brain deteriorates as we age, causing functional impairments. You may be surprised to learn that this process usually begins during mid-to-late-20s. But before you panic, a new study suggests a potential way to reduce such deterioration: meditation. The research team at the Brain Mapping Center at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), found meditation may be associated with better preservation of gray matter in the brain – the neuron-containing tissue responsible for processing information. The researchers recruited 100 subjects to the study aged 24-77. Of these, 50 had meditated for between 4 and 46 years and 50 had never engaged in the practice. Both groups were closely matched for age. (NEXT) The Power Of Tea Washington University, February 6, 2022 A compound found in green tea could have life saving potential for patients with multiple myeloma and amyloidosis, who face often-fatal medical complications associated with bone-marrow disorders, according to a team of engineers at Washington University in St. Louis and their German collaborators. Jan Bieschke, assistant professor of biomedical engineering  says the compound epigallocatechine-3-gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol found in green tea leaves, may be of particular benefit to patients struggling with multiple myeloma and amyloidosis. These patients are susceptible to a frequently fatal condition called light chain amyloidosis, in which parts of the body's own antibodies become misshapen and can accumulate in various organs, including the heart and kidneys. (NEXT) Changing your diet could add up to a decade to life expectancy, study finds University of Bergen (Norway), February 8, 2022 A young adult in the U.S. could add more than a decade to their life expectancy by changing their diet from a typical Western diet to an optimized diet that includes more legumes, whole grains and nuts, and less red and processed meat, according to a new study published  in PLOS Medicine. For older people, the anticipated gains to life expectancy from such dietary changes would be smaller but still substantial. In the new study, researchers used existing meta-analyses and data from the Global Burden of Diseases study to build a model that enables the instant estimation of the effect on life expectancy (LE) of a range of dietary changes. (VIDEOS) Every news media who secretly took Trudeau's $61M pre-election pay-off – (13 minutes) Mary Holland – Protect Our Children (3:44 minutes) Canadian truckers are ‘doing something wonderful for the world' says Brendan O'Neill (OTHER NEWS) How Fact Checking Is Controlled and Faked Epoch Times, February 09, 2022 Prior to 2015 or 2016, you could still read what you wanted online without much interference. This has since changed, as propagandists have infiltrated the media and, along with other major players, like Big Tech and government, set out to control information. Fact-checking — a once-obscure term that's since gone mainstream — is one part of the campaign to control what you see online, and therefore what you think and how you perceive reality — but it's all a ruse. Speaking with Jan Jekielek, The Epoch Times senior editor and host of the show “American Thought Leaders,” investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson explains how virtually everything you see and hear online has been co-opted, or taken over to serve a greater agenda:1 “One has to understand that nearly every mode of information has been co-opted, if it can be co-opted by some group. Fact checks are no different either, they've been coopted in many instances or created for the purpose of distributing narratives and propaganda. And your common sense is accurate when it tells you that the way they chose this fact check and how they decided to word it so they could say this thing is not true when at its heart it really is true, but the message they're trying to send is that you shouldn't believe it, your common sense is right. That's been created as part of a propaganda effort by somebody, somewhere, as part of a narrative to distribute to the public so virtually every piece of information that can be co-opted has been.” The Information Landscape Is Being Controlled Attkisson calls out several common online sources that are heavily manipulated — Wikipedia, Snopes and most “fact” checkers to name a few, along with HealthFeedback.org, which is a fake science group used by Facebook and other Big Tech companies to debunk science that is actually true. Fact checkers are often referred to as scientists, but this, too, is “part of a very well-funded, well-organized landscape that dictates and slants the information they want us to have.” While there have always been efforts to shape the information being given out by the media, it used to be that news reporters would push back against organizations to ensure the public had the other side of the story. Beginning in the early 2000s, Attkisson noted a shift from efforts to simply shape information to those that attempt to keep certain information from being reported at all. This was particularly true among the pharmaceutical companies she was covering at that time. Attkisson described “efforts by these large global PR firms that have been hired by the pharmaceutical industry, by government partners that work with the pharmaceutical industry, to keep the story from being reported at all.”2 Now, instead of real journalists and reporters, the media is infiltrated with propagandists who dictate what's “fake news” and what's not. Many believe that fake news is a product of Trump, but Big Tech was brought into the campaign early on. A lobby campaign by behind-the-scenes propagandists met with Facebook and said you've got to start censoring and “fact” checking information, Attkisson said. Attkisson states that it goes much deeper. A lot of propagandists have become part of the media, and while there used to be a firewall between reporters and the people they reported on, “that's long gone.” She says:6 “We've not just invited them to influence what we report, but we've hired them, not just as pundits and analysts but they are reporters. They are editorial presences within our newsrooms. Now we are one and the same. It's hard to say that there's a distinctive difference in many instances between the people trying to get out a message and the messengers in the media who should be doing a more independent job of reporting accurately.” Reality Is Being Altered in Real Time As it stands, information is being changed in real time to meet the common agenda. This includes definitions in dictionaries and on official government websites. Examples of definitions that have been changed recently include those for pandemic, herd immunity, vaccines and anti-vaxxer. Attkisson reiterates:17 “Virtually every form of information and sourcing that can be co-opted has been. That includes the dictionary definitions; that includes everything because these are important ways to influence thought. Language is very powerful. People don't want to be affiliated with certain names and labels. It reminds me of ‘1984,' the George Orwell story about the futuristic society, under which history was being rewritten in real time to jive with the version that the government wanted or the party wanted it to be. Definitions now are being rewritten and changed in real time to fit with the vision that the establishment wants people to think.” The Truth Finds a Way To Be Told While there are powerful forces at play to control information, all is not lost. Attkisson is aware of three entities that are actively working on a solution, which include: Investors who want to invest in independent news organizations Technical people trying to invent platforms that can't be controlled and deplatformed by Big Tech Journalists who want to work or contribute to these efforts Outlets like Substack newsletters and the video platforms Rumble, Bitchute and Odysee, which don't censor videos for ideological reasons, are actively getting around the censorship of Big Tech, and Attkisson believes that these efforts will accelerate in the next couple of years. Further, she says, “The propagandists may have overplayed their hand by being so heavy-handed and obvious about the control of information and the censorship. It's no longer deniable. Even people who want their information curated, they can't always be happy with the notion that they're not going to be able to get the full story, or that they're only getting one side of something.”24 Ultimately, she adds, “I think the truth finds a way to be told … it may take some time and there may be a lot of people that don't want the truth out, but we inherently as humans seek it.”25 On a personal level, you can go a long way toward finding the truth by following your own common sense and reason, and Attkisson agrees. “I always say, do your own research, make up your own mind, think for yourself. Trust your cognitive dissonance, use your common sense. You're going to be right more often than you think, but open up your mind, read a lot, think a lot and don't buy into the prevailing narrative at face value.” (NEXT) Opioid Overdose Deaths Cost U.S. Economy $1 Trillion A Year, Study Finds Forbes, February 8, 2022 Opioid overdose deaths cost the U.S. economy $1 trillion a year, the U.S. Commission on Combating Synthetic Opioid Trafficking said Tuesday, a “staggering amount” it says underlines the “direct and escalating threat” the opioid epidemic poses to the economy, public health and safety and national security. The panel came up with the estimate based on a White House Council of Economic Advisors' 2018 report that determined the cost of overdose fatalities amounted to $696 billion a year at a time when the death toll was about two thirds of today's. Between June 2020 and May 2021, 100,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, 30% higher than the year before and more than double the number of deaths caused by car accidents or gun violence during that period. About two thirds of those deaths involved synthetic opioids like fentanyl and primarily affected victims between the ages of 15 and 45, the report says. The loss of productivity and increases in healthcare and criminal justice costs tied to opioid overdose deaths amounted to a cost of about $700 billion per year in 2016 and 2017, according to the report. More fatal opioid overdoses. More than 1.2 million Canadians and Americans will die from opioid overdoses by 2029 if the epidemic is not tamed, a group of leading health experts wrote in a report published last week.

Study finds vitamin D supplements with or without Omega-3s decreased risk of autoimmune diseases   Brigham and Women's Hospital, January 27 2022   Autoimmune diseases (AD) such as rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, autoimmune thyroid disease and psoriasis, are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality as people age. Few effective treatments are available for AD, but some preclinical studies have hinted that supplements, including vitamin D and omega-3 (or n-3) fatty acids, may have beneficial effects. In a new study published in BMJ, investigators from Brigham and Women's Hospital evaluated whether taking vitamin D and/or omega fatty acid supplements could affect rates of AD. The team tested this in the large-scale vitamin D and Omega-3 Trial (VITAL), a randomized study which followed participants for approximately five years. Investigators found the people who took vitamin D, or vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids had a significantly lower rate of AD than people who took a placebo.   (NEXT)   Blueberry extract outperforms radiation in killing cervical cancer cells, study reveals   University of Missouri, January 27, 2022   Recent research has focused on attempts to identify radiosensitizers – or non-toxic, natural substances that can make radiation more effective – and (you guessed it) blueberry extract is emerging at the forefront – with a new study showcasing its ability to work along with radiation to combat cervical cancer. In a study of human cancer cells conducted at the University of Missouri, researchers found that combining blueberry extract with radiation increased the treatment's effectiveness.   (NEXT)   Physical activity protects against type 2 diabetes by modifying metabolism   University of Eastern Finland, January 26, 2022   Regular physical activity significantly changes the body's metabolite profile, and many of these changes are associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, a new study from the University of Eastern Finland shows. The study population included more than 7,000 men who were followed up for eight years. Men in the highest physical activity category had a 39% lower risk of type 2 diabetes than men who were physically inactive. Physical activity was associated with the levels of a total of 198 metabolites, i.e., compounds formed as a result of the body's metabolism, and increased physical activity had an impact on some of the same metabolites that have previously been associated with a health-promoting diet. In addition, the study showed that increased physical activity improves insulin secretion.   (NEXT)   Food as medicine   Mayo Clinic, January 26 2022.    The oft-heard adage “Let food be thy medicine” appears to be valid advice according to the results of a first of its kind study published on January 26, 2022 in the Journal of Nutrition. “Based on the outcomes seen in our study, using this type of food as medicine approach expands the options for medical professionals and patients,” first author Stephen Kopecky, MD, FACC, of the Mayo Clinic commented. “Many patients who are unwilling or unable to take statin drugs may be able to help manage their high cholesterol, or hyperlipidemia with a realistic food-based intervention.”   (NEXT)   Maternal consumption of soft drinks may be linked to ADHD symptoms in offspring   University of Bergen (Norway), January 27, 2022   Norwegian, Swedish and Dutch researchers examining a large Norwegian population-based cohort recently reported in European Journal of Nutrition that daily maternal intake of sweetened carbonated beverages (SCB) in pregnancy was associated with an increase in ADHD symptoms among offspring at eight years of age.   (VIDEO)   1. Barrister Una McGurk (Ireland) on pandemic and cancel culture – 6 minutes 2. VOICES PROFESSOR DOLORES CAHILL (2:56) 3. VOICES: ANNE MCCLOSKEY GP (3:48) 4. VOICES: DR PAT MORRISSEY (5:02) 5. VOICES: DR MARCUS DE BRUN (5:13)   (OTHER NEWS)   How 5G Puts Airplanes at Risk – An Electrical Engineer Explains   By Prasenjit Mitra, Professor of Information Sciences and Technology, Penn State. The Conversation, January 26, 2022   New high-speed cellphone services have raised concerns of interference with aircraft operations, particularly as aircraft are landing at airports. The Federal Aviation Administration has assured Americans that most commercial aircraft are safe, and AT&T and Verizon have agreed to hold off on installing their new cellphone antennas near airports for six months. But the problem has not been entirely resolved.   Concerns began when the U.S. government auctioned part of the C-band spectrum to wireless carriers in 2021 for US$81 billion. The carriers are using C-band spectrum to provide 5G service at full speed, 10 times the speed of 4G networks. The C-band spectrum is close to the frequencies used by key electronics that aircraft rely on to land safely. Here's why that can be a problem.   Wireless signals are carried by radio waves. The radio spectrum ranges from 3 hertz to 3,000 gigahertz and is part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The portion of the radio spectrum that carries the signals from your phone and other wireless devices is 20 kilohertz to 300 gigahertz.   If two wireless signals in the same area use the same frequency, you get garbled noise.   Modern airplanes use altimeters, which calculate the time it takes for a signal to bounce back from the ground to determine a plane's altitude. These altimeters are a vital part of automatic landing systems that are especially useful in cases where there is low visibility.   So, if an altimeter interprets a signal from a wireless carrier as the rebounded signal from the ground, it may think that the ground is closer than it is and prematurely try to lower the landing gear and do the other maneuvers that are needed to land an aircraft. If interference with wireless carrier signals corrupts and garbles the altimeter's radio signals, the altimeter may not recognize the rebounded signal and thus be unable to figure out how close to the ground the plane is.   The portions of the radio frequency spectrum used by airplanes and cellphone carriers are different. The problem is that airplane altimeters use the 4.2 to 4.4 gigahertz range, while the recently sold – and previously unused – C-band spectrum for wireless carriers ranges from 3.7 to 3.98 gigahertz. It turns out the 0.22 gigahertz difference between the signals may not be quite enough to be absolutely sure that a cellphone carrier signal will not be mistaken for or corrupt an altimeter's signal.   (NEXT)   The Scientific Misconduct Story Behind Ivermectin   Joseph Mercola, January 26, 2022   STORY AT-A-GLANCE In mid-February 2021, Dr. Andrew Hill at Liverpool University published a scientific meta-analysis of six randomized controlled trials involving the use of ivermectin. The review, funded by the World Health Organization and UNITAID, found the drug increased viral clearance and reduced COVID-19 deaths by 75%, yet the conclusion of the paper was dismissive In early April 2021, Hill was accused of scientific misconduct by the French civic group, Association BonSens. BonSens claims Hill manipulated data to downplay the usefulness of ivermectin. Hill admitted that the study sponsor had crafted the conclusion In early August 2021, Hill published a public notice stating one of the six studies included in his analysis had been withdrawn due to fraudulent data. A revised analysis excluding that study was published in November 2021 In the November revision, Hill included 23 randomized clinical trials, concluding ivermectin had no statistically significant effect on survival or hospitalizations Other meta-analyses of 13 to 24 studies have found reductions in death ranging from 62% to 91%. Recent research has also found a five-day course of ivermectin at a dose of 12 mg per day sped up viral clearance, reducing the duration of symptomatic illness by three days compared to placebo (9.7 days versus 12.7 days)

PODCAST EPISODE 4: Manuel Hempel of Vindfløy Bybigård in Bergen, Norway As you will find out, the last time I saw Manuel Hempel was in a karaoke bar In Canada. Obviously, my stellar singing voice made a great impression on the young, 34-year-old beekeeper from Norway, as we have stayed in touch ever since. To be serious, I met this incredibly passionate fellow when we were both at the APIMONDIA beekeeping and honey production conference in Montreal, Canada, and was struck by his story. Passionate about all things bee-related, Manuel is a keeper in a part of the world where the climate and terrain is tough – the city of Bergen on the southwestern coast of Norway. Although Bergen is not as wild as the mountainous areas of Norway, and the sea makes the climate milder and therefore suitable for bees, I am in awe of this young beekeeper, his perspective and story. Vindfløy Bybigård is a beekeeping project in downtown Bergen, named after the Vindfloy (wind transducer) on Mt. Floyen where Manuel's first hives were situated in 2013. Manuel run beehives from backyards to rooftops in different neighbourhoods all around the town of Bergen, seeking to “engage with the public and local institutions to create awareness for the city as an urban ecosystem, promote biodiversity and support local bees and pollinators by contributing to a more insect friendly environment in town”. What a legend! He is also very passionate about education, running workshops and giving presentations on bees at different events. In turn, Manuel and his bees have been involved with amazing groups such as Spire Bergen, ALF (Integration Center), SLowfood Bergen and the Bergen International School. I am thrilled to introduce Manuel to the Ben's Bees Community in Episode 4 of the BEES WITH BEN podcast. Listen in to hear us chat about the honey cooperative called HONNINGCENTRALEN (which translates to Honey Centre) – an awesome initiative where the price of honey is fixed so that all beekeepers can sell their honey for a good price and maintain its high quality. Food for thought until I next meet up with Manuel at the 2021 APIMONDIA in Ufa, Russia, for more chats on bees and hopefully a little karaoke ;) Tune in! https://anchor.fm/ben-the-beeman

If you think the idea of a road trip in Norway with kids sounds interesting, then this is the episode for you. Today we talk about an incredible Norway road trip and some of the fun things to do in Norway. A Road Trip in Norway with Kids We've driven/ridden in many places around the world, but we've never taken a road trip in Norway with kids. Yet after talking to this week's guest, it's now on my list. Today we talk again with Jeff Bogle from the Out With the Kids blog. The first time we spoke, it was all about cruises. This week is a very different topic: driving in Norway and a pretty incredible road trip through Norway.   ::: Like what you’re hearing? Then please subscribe, rate & review Epic Education Radio. We would be extremely grateful! iTunes is a search engine as well, and so when you rate and review us, you help others find us. Thank you! ::: IN THIS EPISODE 10:20 Intro to Jeff 11:52 Norway Road Trips — Why Norway? 17:14 Skipped Oslo and Drove West 22:03 Bergen Norway 26:10 The Only Disappointment 31:23 Food in Norway 35:41 Book Towns in Norway 39:24 Alesund Norway 42:14 Trondheim Norway   ABOUT Names: Family blogger & Iris Award-winning photographer Jeff Bogle, his wife, and teen/tween daughters Hold passports from: USA Type of travel: Short-term travel, family cruises for kids, road trips A few places they’ve been: 20+ countries and counting, including Turkey, Greece, the UK/Ireland, Spain, and France.   LINKS & RESOURCES My first conversation with Jeff was about cruises Jeff tells us what to avoid in Norway A little more on the disappointing rail and cruise in Flåm   FIND THEM ON Out With The Kids (aka OWTK) | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Pinterest The Bogle's Norway Road Trip Dreamed up and planned while traveling in Ireland, the Bogle's adventure started with flights to the Oslo airport. From there, they skipped Oslo entirely and instead drove west. From here their Norway road trip took them to Bergen, Alesund, Trondheim and other fascinating places. "It’s the prettiest place we’ve ever been, full stop," he says, "Top to bottom.” That's a pretty large claim for Jeff, who travels a lot — both with his family and on his own. Then again, many of the scenes they encountered sound magical. For example, during this road trip in Norway, they saw crystal-clear fjords and snow-capped mountains. And they sat in wooden hot tubs on a deck overlooking it all. During his road trip in Norway, Jeff describes a scene where they watched snowflakes "as big as a baby's fist." These flakes dropped so slowly that they could even make out the patterns on them as they fell. Driving in Norway: Norway Road Trip Tips According to Jeff's experience, driving is Norway is easy. Even with loads of snow, the roads are clear and easy to follow. That said, he explains that just about any road trip in Norway will involve lots of tunnels. In fact, one of the longest tunnels in the world (that's not underwater) is in Norway: 25 kilometers long. Some tunnels even have roundabouts, rest stops and forks in the road. If you're claustrophobic and taking a road trip in Norway, this may be something to consider. A road trip in Norway will also likely involve car ferries — especially in the west of the country. With so many fjords and other bodies of water, travel in Norway requires some time to cross to the other side. They had one close call during their trip, actually — because of a flight delay, they had to rush to reach one car ferry. The last ferry of the day left just 15minutres after they reached if after a long drive. Food in Norway: Norway Travel Tips Jeff and family had some fantastic food during their road trip in Norway. There was still plenty of snow on the ground when they were there. Yet his vegetarian daughters were still able to find enough to eat, including (their surprise and delight) avocados! Jeff also saw lots of fish and wild game on menus, as well. One of his favorite meals of the trip was a halibut pulled right out of the fjord in they had taken a boat ride on. He also had an amazing Italian meal in Bergen at a place called Olivia's. So much so that I'll put a link to it in the show notes here. Like Iceland, Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia, food in Norway isn't cheap. If you take a road trip in Norway, prepare yourself for sticker shock. That said, Jeff talks about that it wasn't as bad as expected. Sure, there were some $100 breakfasts. Then again, that meal at Olivia's — one he claimed to be vaulted into the top 5 of his life — was approximately USD $90 for his family of four. Book Towns in Norway: Norway Travel Tips Books? The Bogles are fans. Both of Jeff's daughters are huge readers and Jeff and his wife both love the printed page as well. That's why for their Norway road trip itinerary they stopped in Fjærland. It's here that many old buildings are taken over by used books. Thousands and thousands of them. Unfortunately, their side trip to Fjærland didn't go as planned. More on that in the episode. They had better luck later when they reached Trondheim. They found a great "book barn" cafe, where they snacked while being surrounded by books. Once they walked outside, they realized that they were standing at the city's most picturesque wharf. The Only Disappointment of their Road Trip in Norway Jeff and family had an amazing time. In fact, they're already planning a return trip. That said, there were a few minor let downs during their road trip in Norway. For example, in Flåm, they took a very well-known (and very expensive) train ride that is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world. That may be true, but because of the multiple tunnels, it was hard to capture it on camera. A fjord cruise in the same area was similarly disappointing. Not terrible, he says, but not worth the price and time required. Jeff describes it best in the podcast itself. More on Their Road Trip in Norway These are just a few of the things Jeff tells me about their road trip in Norway. "Calvin. Lorna. Maura. Bjarne" is an ever evolving written work by artist & musician Mykki Blanco. Conceived during a writing residency at Hordaland Kunstsenter in Bergen Norway in September and October of 2017, "Calvin. Lorna. Maura. Bjarne" is both a performance art work and the beginning of a novel. The first installment of the work is a 40 minute excerpt from the story recorded as an audio-book and podcast that one can listen to at leisure. Originally performed in front of a live audience Mykki Blanco orates the story in a theatrical fashion reminiscent and inspired by equal parts the late Spalding Gray and William Burroughs. "Calvin. Lorna. Maura. Bjarne" is narrated by Calvin the main character, a thirty something HIV positive African American actor. The story is used in many ways by Blanco to redefine narratives surrounding HIV, giving a contemporary vantage point on the disease that differs greatly from much of the fatalistic rhetoric that still surrounds those living with the condition in the 21st century. "Calvin. Lorna. Maura. Bjarne" is a story about narcissism and self destructive behavior, new age delusion and a millennial take on the timeless search for self.Mykki Blanco’s podcast was produced whilst on a residency hosted by Hordaland Kunstsenter in the autumn of 2017. The podcast was initially launched as a live performance event by Blanco held at Hordaland Kunstsenter on 27 October, as part of Meteor festival 2017.The podcast is part of a series also featuring Mårten Spangberg’s “News from the Last of the International Hot Shots / Natten”. These podcasts further Hordaland Kunstsenter’s ongoing exploration of the notions of publicness, institutional presence, and audience using the wide dissemination potential of the medium of podcast to challenge the conventional institutional limitations of presenting and sharing artwork experiences. Furthermore, the project questions how artistic qualities not native to audio - such as live performance, writing, choreography and visuality - can be translated for a sound broadcast concept, and whether the distribution of podcasts might offer a platform to increase the “visibility” of performance art in a contemporary art context in which performance still lacks consistent presentation opportunities outside of live events and video documentation.Produced by Hordaland Kunstsenter with support from Bergen Kommune and The Norwegian Arts Council. The What Makes This Place Great Podcast

Bergen, Norway - you were a STUNNER! Bergen is the second largest city in Norway after the capital, Oslo, and it did not disappoint. It is known to be the gateway into the fjords and where people begin their hiking, camping, and outdoor journeys throughout Norway. The town itself reminded me of a colorful and vibrant ski-town which was so refreshing. It's famous for the colored homes that line the harbor and mountains, as well as the massive ships in the harbor, great food, and quaintness. I was there for a total of four days during Easter weekend, so it was a little dead, but I still managed to get some great activities in. I hiked to the top lookout point, Floyen Mountain, overlooking all of Bergen and the harbor, and then hiked even further up the mountains on a few trails over the course of an afternoon...so gorgeous! On another day, I took a cruise through the fjords and it was just another one of those days that will seriously top the birth of my children ;) the water was so still and the reflections of the fjords looked absolutely insane and picturesque. Other than the outdoor activities, I had a few amazing meals in the city center, strolled around, and hung out in cafes the whole time. I can't recommend this town enough! It was quite difficult to get locals to interview for the show since everything was closed down for Easter, and all locals were out of town. I did manage to have a conversation with Suzelle who works at a lovely cafe I spent some time in. She moved to Bergen decades ago with her husband and couldn't stop raving about it! I'm so glad I got her perspective on this cute town. I also had a few brief conversations with some fellow travelers in my hostel who were also coming through Bergen for the mountains and outdoor culture. Bergen has so much to offer and I definitely know I will be back there - in the summer next time! Hope you all enjoy this one! On this episode, the fellows are once again joined by Dr. Nestingen and Prof. Pless. This time, we tackle listener questions about doctrine and the differences between Norwegian and German Lutheranism. As a bonus, we recorded this episode in Bergen Norway, and some of our Norwegian hosts join us in the second half of the show. Sit back relax, grab a drink, and enjoy the show.  Show Notes: Here We Still Stand Hammer of God The Necessary Distinction
