S8E5 went out live from Sedgefield at 19h00 on 30 Jan 2025. It was great to be back doing a live show. Last week's excursion to watch Green Day the Offspring and SA's own Fokofpolisiekar was amazing, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The Twisted Twins became Triplets at the last minute we had three tracks called ‘Ashes' by Five Finger Death Punch, Black Tide, and Angra respectively. The Rock and Metal Time Machine looked at 4 events in history involving Green Day, Sid Vicious, The Rolling Stones, and Guns N' Roses. We had Pink Floyd ‘Sheep' in the Immortals slot and Glyn Johns as the producer in The Diabolical Challenge: The four albums featured came from the Who, New Model Army, the Eagles, and Eric Clapton. We got new SA music from Sheron, and Diverted Disorder and the first song written by The Uninvited. Artists featured: Newsted, LIVE, Junkyard, ACDC, Megadeth, Rammstein, Korn, Theory of a Deadman, Motor Sister, Shadow Storm, W.A.S.P., Ayron Jones, The Temperance Movement, Five Finger Death Punch, Black Tide, Angra, Green Day, Sex Pistols, The Rolling Stones, Guns N' Roses, Johnny Lang, Gov't Mule, Judas Priest, Audioslave, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, New Model Army, the Who, Diverted Disorder, Sheron, The Uninvited, Mastodon, Lamb of God. The evolution of the Foo Fighters, continued, this week's track was ‘Walk' off the most excellent Wasting Light. This track was used to great effect at the end of Marvels Thor. Twisted Twins this week, came courtesy of The First Lady of Rock and featured tracks called ‘Blue Highway'. We had versions by Billy Idol and by George Thorogood & the Destroyers. Immortals this week came from W.A.S.P., the title rack off 2015's Golgotha. The Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘XYZ'. The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one. This week we had:Y&T – Black TigerYngwie J. For the first time ever a Japanese Brewery, Black Tide, joins us for our Thursday night Meet the Brewers Series - and there's some fascinating stories to share! You can grab the beers we discuss in this episode from our online store here: https://the-coolroom-podcast.myshopify.com/products/black-tide-mixed-4-pack If you're quick you can also head down to Benchwarmer Bar in North Melbourne and find them on tap - a big thanks to Locky from Benchwarmer [who pops up in the podcast a couple of times] for all his help in making this episode happen! James from Black Tide has an amazing story to share starting in a home-brew store in Portland Oregon and leading to running a brewery in a Japanese fishing town with lots of lessons and insights along the way. We find out what he's learned from internships at Japanese breweries, the similarities and differences of how things are done compared to the US and how the Japanese craft beer market is faring generally. There's a detailed discussion about the amazing art that appears on Black Tide cans and of course there's a coolroom experience or two to share - and did Locky really dress up a couple of kegs in a trench coat to get them through a Japanese airport?
S7E14 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 4 April 2024. This week's Twisted Twins featured tracks called ‘Take It Off'. The Donnas and Suicide Bombers did the honours. Immortals, a track over 7 minutes showcasing an artist's brilliance, came off the Born to Run album. It is a track called ‘Jungleland'. Springsteen is at his finest on this groundbreaking album but it's the late Clarens Clemons' sax solo that really makes it special. And the lyric! Never forget the lyrics when it comes to The Boss. The Fake Feud featured Pete Townshend and ACDC. The new TSORR Newsletter # 3 is out, check out the website if you want to watch it or join the mailing list. The Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘M'. The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one. This week we had: Nirvana – NevermindNight Ranger – Midnight MadnessNazareth – No mean CityNeal Young – Freedom The trick is to think about the whole album not just the track, it's easy to forget that the whole of Nevermind is not Smells Like Teen Spirit
S7E12 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 21 March 2024. It was full throttle out of the gate with Dio and ‘Evil Eyes'. We had some new music from Dan Patlansky, Judas Priest and Bruce Dickenson. Most interesting is a new single from Vended. I am really digging Vended a lot, sons of Slipknot, literally, Griffin Tayor and Simon Crahan doing their parents proud. To remind you to get tickets for next year's Green Day, The Offspring, and Fokofpolisikar concert in Cape Town and JHB we again took a quick track from each of them. This weeks Twisted Twins featured a song called 'Lost in Hollywood'. The new Judas Priest is out so obviously we continued to rave about that. This week's Immortals feature was incredible. Mark Knopfler has assembled 60 musicians, mostly guitarists (he's got Ringo and his son Zak on drums and Sting on Bass), and it is a veritable who's who of guitar. The track has been recorded by Mark Knopfler and Friends to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust. It's a new version of 'Going Home' (Theme from Local Hero) and, it includes contributions from among others Joe Bonamassa, Slash, Springsteen, Joe Satriani, Steve Lukather, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, John Mc Laughlin, Brian May, the list goes. Incredible. This week's Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘L'. The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one. This week we had: Loverboy – Get LuckyLed Zeppelin – Over the Hills and Far AwayLynyrd Skynyrd – Second HelpingLive – Throwing Copper Artists Featured: Dio, Chickenfoot, Phil X & the Drills, ACDC, ZZ Top, Saxon, Motörhead, The Union Underground, Overkill, Black Tide, Alice Cooper, Doomsday Outlaw, Michael Schenker Group, Guns ‘n' Roses, Volbeat, Rainbow, System of a Down, Judas Priest, Bruce Dickinson, Bullet For My Valentine, Machine Head, Green Day, The Offspring, Fokofpolisiekar, Loverboy, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Live, Metallica, Megadeth, Vended, Piet Botha & Jackhammer, Joe Bonamassa, Dan Patlansky, Pink Floyd. Sakamichi Brewing is located in Tachikawa, Tokyo. Each episode Daniel and Matthew pick a beer or two from the menu and talk about it a bit. This week we cracked a can of Days Over, a delicious unfiltered lager from Black Tide Brewing. Black Tide have established themselves as a real favourite in our taproom, with customers often coming in specifically for any new beers that we stock from them. Days Over is a malty and flavourful brew, perfect for drinking in the bath with Winston Churchill and a bear. We also reflected a little on some of the things that we've had to learn to do over the last 2 years and some of the lessons we've learned about how to actually get things done. Accepting that the first draft is going to be terrible has allowed us to get started (and hopefully get better) on so many different projects. Our advice - just start! You have to make something to be able to make it better. In Episode 117, Quinn discusses: how accountability works – and doesn't – in the climate movement, how you can get involved, and how the best in the world are doing it. Our guests are Mary Annaïse Heglar and Amy Westervelt. The duo makes up Hot Take, a podcast and newsletter that gives an honest look at the climate crisis while providing some of the most empathetic voices in the climate justice movement. We've heard it again and again: the biggest barrier to climate action is political will, but how do you build that (besides putting polluters in jail)? Well, partly through discourse: by helping people understand why they should be fired up. Nobody's penned more influential, moving climate essays than Mary. On the other hand, there's still so much f*cking money and power wrapped up in the fossil fuel industry – and, consequently, the policy surrounding it. And nobody's done more to uncover their bullshit than Amy, through her investigative podcast series, Drilled. With their powers combined, we lay the groundwork for change. How do we ensure that the monsters responsible get held accountable for their actions? Listen in! Alternative rock band Lido Beach was originally formed in 2008 by the former bassist for The City Drive (We The People/Sony Records) Scott Waldman. Named after Waldman's Long Island hometown, Lido Beach released their debut album 'Fake Hellos, Real Goodbyes' that same year. Armed with a set of ultra-catchy earworms, and a steady touring schedule that found them playing shows with the likes of the Cab, Black Tide and American Hi-Fi, Lido Beach quickly earned a loyal fanbase. After releasing their “Social Climbing” EP in 2013 they disbanded, until 2017 when they reunited for a series of shows. Since then, Lido Beach has become more of a solo project for Waldman, who now lives in Los Angeles and by day runs a successful music management company, writes for a number of media outlets, and hosts a long-running podcast. In 2018 Waldman/Lido Beach released a new single "I Fell Hard" and later, an acoustic version of the 2008 song "My Oh My" which were both well-received by fans. During the pandemic, he again got the urge to revisit and rework tracks from the band's catalog, which resulted in the latest single, "New Scar, Same Scar," a re-imagining of the track 'Scar' from 'Fake Hellos, Real Goodbyes.' Waldman says, “I wrote this song in 2000 about a traumatic event in college that I'll never address publicly. Bullying is awful and I don't want to give this person any press. Still, I'm happy the song was written and that it finally turns legal.” The track is debuting today on Loudwire: https://loudwire.com/lido-beach-new-scar-same-scar/ "New Scar, Same Scar" will be available on DSPs on Friday, June 11. Protesters flee on foot as law enforcement fires tear gas and so-called “less lethal” weapons at the end of a Justice for George Floyd protest in Oakland on June 1. Photo by KPFA's Ariel Boone. On this show: 0:08 – The first death from Covid-19 inside an ICE detention center took place in Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego. We speak with Anthony Alexandre, who is currently being detained at the CoreCivic-run facility, and led a hunger strike inside earlier this year. Alexandre reports being exposed to confirmed cases of Covid-19 at least twice since inside, and says immigration status should not be a death sentence during the pandemic. Alexandre also says ICE is vastly underreporting the number of cases inside Otay Mesa. 0:17 – A new Reuters investigation follows asylum seekers who are dropping their cases in order to flee for their safety — from Covid-19. Immigrants in detention with medical vulnerabilities fear death from the virus and are reporting immigration officials are encouraging them to sign for their own deportation, to try to avoid the virus. Laura Gottesdiener (@Gottesdiener), a reporter for Reuters in Monterrey, Mexico. You can read her investigation here. 0:33 – Yesterday, Mexico's COVID-19 death toll reached 30,000, making it the country with the fifth-highest number of officially reported deaths. Shannon Young (@SYoungReports) reports from Oaxaca. 0:41 – We turn to Yemen, where a five-year civil war and devastating U.S.-supported bombing campaign by Saudi Arabia continue to cause a humanitarian disaster, destroying the country's health infrastructure and leaving it unprepared to handle the coronavirus. KPFA's Rami Almeghari reports. 0:48 – Laura Carlsen (@lauracarlsenc) discusses the politics and economics of COVID in Mexico and President Trump's upcoming meeting with with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. She's the director of the Mexico City-based Americas Program, a fiscally sponsored program of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. 1:08 – The Supreme Court let stand a lower court decision that blocked construction of part of the Keystone XL Pipeline in Montana, a pipeline long targeted by climate activists; a federal judge ruled that the Dakota Access Pipeline operated by Energy Transfer Partners must shut down and empty itself of oil within 30 days; and Dominion Energy and Duke Energy have cancelled their plans to build the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, deciding it was no longer profitable. Environmental advocates count these as major victories against polluting, extractive projects, after years of resistance largely led by indigenous organizers. We speak with Antonia Juhasz (@AntoniaJuhasz), a Bertha Fellow in investigative journalism, part of a global team of journalists investigating climate, fossil fuels and corporate power. Her most recent book is Black Tide. 1:33 – On June 1, 2020, at the end of a youth-led Justice for George Floyd demonstration and 20 minutes before Oakland's curfew, the Oakland Police Department tear gassed protesters. The police claim it was justified and provoked. But what really happened that evening? We're joined by three journalists from nonprofit newsroom The Oaklandside, Darwin BondGraham (@DarwinBondGraha), Sarah Belle Lin (@SarahBelleLin) and Jonah Owen Lamb, who used visual evidence to investigate police conduct at the protest and compare it to police and city statements and policies. Read their investigation here: “Did OPD violate its own policies against protesters?” The post Some asylum seekers abandon their cases to escape COVID in ICE detention; Mexico's virus death toll reaches 30,000; Visual evidence sheds light on OPD protest crackdown appeared first on KPFA.

Satan's in deep shit! The BOP Crew is sitting down with some instant coffee and whipping chocolates at the refrigerator. Cody's housewarming party? No, it's because we're talking about the 1992 sci-fi/horror/noir/comedy from the writer of Hollow Man and The Fast And The Furious, SPLIT SECOND! Haven't heard of it, you say? Neither had we until the passing of it's star, Rutger Hauer, but what we found was a chronicle of the far-flung future of 2008, where a troubled detective who doesn't play by the rules searches the flooded streets of London for a killer who may be something more - or less - than human. In other words? B-Movie heaven! Listen we as we discuss it's eerily feasible "future" setting, the avalanche of plot points that take us from gene sequencers to astrology charts, whether or not this movie knows it's ridiculous, the joy of seeing prestige actors dress like action figures, why it really should have been called Black Tide, and how Stephen Norrington gave us the first live-action Venom. It's always comes back to Venom! Pay your respects at the London Necropolis by downloading here!
