Lenten Retreat Conference No. 5: When I Am Lifted Up: The Saving Innocence of Christ Note: This audio is the fifth Friday Retreat Conference within the Lenten Season. When I Am Lifted Up: The Saving Innocence of Christ This fifth conference within the Lenten Devotional Season . . . . . . explains how the season of Lent developed over time in the Church. Originally, Lent focused on preparing new converts for baptism, but as Christianity became widespread, it shifted toward renewing the faith of all believers. By the Middle Ages, Lent took on two parts: the first emphasizing prayer, fasting, and almsgiving for personal conversion, and the second . . . beginning around the fifth week (Passiontide) . . . focusing on the Cross and Christ's suffering. Covering of Crosses and Images A key tradition during this time is the covering of crosses and images. This practice symbolizes a “fasting of the eyes,” helping believers recognize that they often take sacred things for granted. By temporarily hiding these images, the Church invites deeper reflection so that, when the Cross is revealed on Good Friday, it is encountered with renewed understanding and reverence. The conference emphasizes that the Cross is central to understanding Jesus. While the world resists suffering and self-sacrifice, Christ reveals that true life comes through self-denial, self-giving, and sacrifice. This is why Jesus teaches: to follow Him, one must first deny oneself, then take up the cross. Lent prepares believers for this call. Through spiritual discipline, they are strengthened to confront their own weaknesses and worldly tendencies, which often prioritize self-interest over God's will. As Passiontide begins, the Church asks a deeper question: not just whether one follows Jesus, but how deeply one desires to follow Him, even to the Cross. The culmination comes on Good Friday, when the Cross is finally unveiled. This moment represents a profound revelation of Christ's love and sacrifice, drawing believers to venerate and personally encounter it. From the Cross flows forgiveness . . . Jesus' first words being “Father, forgive them” . . . highlighting mercy as the heart of the mystery. The conference encourages participation in the sacrament of reconciliation, especially during Lent, as a concrete response to Christ's mercy. Overall, Lent is presented as a journey of conversion, leading believers to a deeper understanding of the Cross, which is the source and summit of Christian life. Listen to this devotional Lenten Retreat Conference and let it transform your heart. I've found that Latter-day Saint singers sing hymns that I like, and I get disturbed by that. Should I not listen? Christianity has been “hijacked” by Christian Nationalists, right-wing Conservatives and Dominionists, according to John Fugelsang, author of the 2025 book Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person's Guide to Taking Back the Bible from Fundamentalists, Fascists, and Flock-Fleecing Frauds. “The entire history of the organized religion has been authoritarian control,” he said on our interview for the Cults, Culture & Coercion podcast. However, he also noted a deep appreciation for the teaching of Christ through the Bible and as used by non-violent activists like Martin Luther King Jr., “There's this incredible history of liberation thought and a true history of Christian activism that's almost always in resistance to Christian authoritarianism.”   “This book is a guide to everything the haters got wrong, and how, even if you're an atheist, if you're debating a Christian fundamentalist, Jesus agrees with you whether he exists or not, on every topic that divides us, it gives you the right-wing arguments and why they're full of crap.” I replied that I'd interviewed many biblical scholars over the years and that I felt John really knew his stuff when it came to countering Christian nationalist fascists. I encouraged listeners to read or listen to his book. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Spiritual gifts have been a matter of controversy in the church since the beginning of Christianity. How quickly the body of Christ forgets the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit in the distribution of the gifts. From this error arises all manner of sin and abuse of gifts given by God. In sermon on Romans 12:3–5 titled “Gifts in the Church,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones addresses two particular follies the church falls into when it forgets the sovereignty of the Spirit and the diversity of the gifts. On the one hand, he says, the Christian thinks more highly of themselves than they ought. Following the apostle Paul, he demonstrates how the Scriptures teach humility and particularly the most profound demonstrations of humility in the example of the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul's call for the church to think is key as this connects with his previous teaching on the renewal of the mind. On the other hand, Christians can underestimate the importance of any gift. There are two equal dangers, warns Dr. Lloyd-Jones, to overestimate a gift, becoming puffed up, or to despise another gift and thus denigrate the Spirit's work. Listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones teaches on the gifts in the church, a topic in which Christians consistently need clarity and direction. Are Democrats stuck on optics instead of results? From party strategists fretting over the “right” candidate to jaw-dropping claims about Christianity, abortion, and policy failures, this episode exposes the internal panic over winning the next election. Meanwhile, the border crisis and radical immigration policies loom large—yet party insiders think a straight, white Christian male can fix everything. It's politics, WTF-style. ⚡ EPISODE SUMMARY This episode dives into the Democrats' secret internal debates about winning the presidency in 2026—or so they think. Key moments include: Party strategists whispering: “We may need a straight white Christian male to win.” Former first lady Michelle Obama fueling doubts about female candidates' electability. Explosive commentary on how policies, not diversity, may be the real problem. Open borders, defunding ICE and Customs, and the absurdity of thinking optics alone will satisfy voters. Questionable claims about Christianity, abortion, and internal party faith debates. Bottom line: The conversation is wild, the policies are crazier, and the Democrats' strategy might just be a WTF moment in itself.

Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com    Jimmy Carr - yes he needs to be listened to in small bites, but he is way more than just a comedian, he is a political assassin and has an incredible and unique way of looking at life. I saw a short clip where a young man asked him for advice on how to be a comedian. He said something… and maybe it just hit me more than most but he said - don't try to be the best, try to be the only. Get it? Be you. But when he said it the way he said it - it reverberated in me. Yes, be the only - because God made us all uniquely individual and we are all ONLYS. Most people spend their entire life trying to be like others… and never feel complete and never hit the mark for what God has created them for… but if you try to be the ONLY - you most likely will fall into place where God can use you most, best and completely.      "OG" stands for Original Gangster, a slang term originating in the 1970s/80s to describe someone who is authentic, old-school, or a pioneer in their field. It is now commonly used to mean simply "original," referring to the first or classic version of a person, item, or concept. They are truly themselves, copying no one and not caring what anyone thinks.      Here are a few OGs (Original Gangsters / foundational legends) from the Bible—pioneers who set the tone, faced impossible odds, built legacies, and influenced everything that came after them:   Old Testament OGs: - Noah – The ultimate survivor and boat-builder. When the whole world went wicked, he stayed faithful, built the ark, and restarted humanity. OG of "prep and persevere." - Abraham – The father of nations. Left everything behind on God's call, pioneered monotheism in a pagan world, and became the root of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. True OG patriarch. - Moses – Delivered an entire enslaved nation from the world's superpower (Egypt). Parted the Red Sea, received the Ten Commandments, and led through the wilderness for 40 years. OG liberator and lawgiver. - David – Went from shepherd boy to giant-slayer to king. Warrior-poet who unified Israel, established Jerusalem as the capital, and laid the foundation for the Messiah's line. Ultimate underdog-to-legend story. - Elijah – Fearless prophet who called down fire from heaven, confronted corrupt kings and false prophets, and was taken to heaven in a whirlwind. OG of spiritual warfare and boldness.   New Testament OGs: - John the Baptist – The wild desert preacher who prepared the way for Jesus. Lived on locusts and honey, baptized crowds, and fearlessly called out hypocrisy (even Herod). OG forerunner. - Peter – Impulsive fisherman turned "Rock" of the church. Denied Jesus once but became the bold leader of the early church, preached at Pentecost, and helped spread the faith. OG of redemption and leadership. - Paul (Saul of Tarsus) – Former persecutor of Christians who became the greatest missionary and theologian of the New Testament. Wrote half the New Testament letters, planted churches across the Roman Empire. OG of radical transformation.   Bonus "Ride-or-Die" OGs: - Joseph (son of Jacob) – Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, rose to second-in-command in Egypt through integrity and God-given wisdom. OG of forgiveness and divine comeback. - Esther – Orphan who became queen and risked her life to save her people from genocide. OG of courage and strategic influence ("for such a time as this").   These are the originals who walked by faith in hostile territory, changed history, and left blueprints for generations. Who's your favorite Bible OG, or do you want more in a specific category (warriors, prophets, women, etc.)?   Eph. 2:10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.   Workmanship/Masterpiece… not really - more like divine craftsmanship.  It speaks of Gods specific and unique intentionality for each creation/person- his precision i.e. nothing as was before or will be. Like snowflakes…   Be the OG of your life and your walk - and watch what God can do!

Chapter 1 is the best temple prep book ever. I sat down with Jonathan Stapley, an award-winning historian to discuss his newest book, Holiness to the Lord: Latter Day Saint Temple Worship. During the show, Stapley was even surprised he won the “Best Temple Book of 2025” award! I thi https://youtu.be/1bBMcqgKKdY 0:00 Award Winning Author on LDS Temple Worship 3:20 Is Temple Worship Taboo? 10:14 Required Reading for Temple Prep 17:52 Kirtland Temple Period Demystifying the Temple Experience/Temple Prep For many, the LDS temple can feel like a secretive or taboo topic, but Stapley's new book aims to change that. He designed his first chapter to be a transparent walkthrough for anyone preparing for the temple. It covers the practical, step-by-step process of going to the temple, from talking to a local bishop and purchasing garments to making an appointment and participating in the ceremonies. Stapley explains that this level of openness is highly beneficial. Not only does it help outsiders understand the faith’s practices, but it also gives practicing Latter-day Saints a much-needed framework for discussing the temple constructively, helping them avoid being unhelpfully “cagey” or silent about their worship. Furthermore, Stapley pushes back against critics who use the private nature of the temple as a “dig” against the church, noting that the creation of sacred, “insider/outsider” boundary-maintaining spaces is a common practice across many world religions and ancient Christianity. The Myth of the “OG” Endowment When it comes to the temple’s core ceremony—the endowment—Stapley makes a striking historical observation: there is no such thing as an “OG” (original) endowment. Before temples, bishops, or apostles were even fully established in the church, Joseph Smith taught that the saints would be “endowed with power from on high,” a concept pulled directly from the biblical books of Luke and Acts. Originally, this endowment was a charismatic experience rather than a set ritual. Over time, these biblical concepts were ritualized and performed, constantly adapting to the needs of the church. Because the ceremony was initially transmitted orally, Stapley notes that the ritual has continually changed and adapted throughout its entire history. He directly challenges fundamentalist attempts to reconstruct a supposedly “original” 8-hour endowment, stating that such a platonic ideal never actually existed, and that procedural changes are a historical reality, not proof of apostasy as fundamentalists allege. A “Golden Era” for Latter-day Saint History Stapley shared that we are currently living in a “golden era” of Latter-day Saint historical research. Compared to a couple of decades ago when archive access felt like the “wild west,” there is now sustained openness and transparency, with massive resources like the Brigham Young papers available freely online. While the church still naturally redacts specific details about the temple ceremonies from third-party historical documents, Stapley isn’t bothered by this. Instead of getting bogged down in reconstructing “ticky tack” changes to the ceremonies, he is far more interested in the bigger picture: understanding what these sacred rituals actually do in the lives, minds, and communities of the believers who participate in them. Have you read his book? What are your impressions?

Many cultures around the world have legends about creation and a great Flood that have been handed down from generations in the distant past. Most of these creation and Flood stories support the biblical story of creation and the Flood. The Wallam Olum is the story of creation and the history of the Delaware Indians. It predates the coming of white people or Christianity to North America. The Delaware creation legend reveals an all-powerful creator who began by creating an earth without dry land, and the heavens, including the sun, moon, and stars. After dividing the waters from the land, he made all living things, including the first mother. This world was full of joy and had no sorrow until the snake brought wickedness. It concludes by saying that all this happened beyond the great ocean. The Delaware story of the Flood begins with the world filled with evil because of the activity of the evil snake. While the Delaware legend blames the Flood on the snake, a few were saved through the Flood at an island called “Nana,” a name very similar to Noah. While the Wallam Olum is not Genesis, the similarities with Genesis are too many and too exact to be accidental. Similar legends from all over the globe have the same or similar details that they, too, share with Genesis. This can only be explained by the fact that the Bible is accurate in describing how all cultures have shared this common history together.Acts 17:26“And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;”Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, fill me and all believers with a greater concern and spirit of sacrifice to do what is needed to bring the good news of salvation to those who are without it. True teachers motivate people to do good things. Your speech should be so solid that it stirs people to action. In Titus 3, Paul instructs us to avoid foolish controversy. If it doesn't edify, change lives, engage people, or motivate them toward good works, it only creates a disruptive culture. Measure the fruit of it, and then take action. Be a leader, not just a listener. Don't cultivate a culture that entertains controversies the Bible has already addressed.

Buried in the writings of a first-century Jewish philosopher is a description of a community that most Christians have never heard of. A group of men and women living on the outskirts of Alexandria, Egypt who abandoned everything, their wealth, their status, their former lives, to pursue one thing: a vision of God's light. They were called the Therapeutae. And the women among them, known as the Therapeutrides, were not silent observers. They were philosophers. They were mystics. They were equal participants in the spiritual life. For centuries, their story has been overlooked, misunderstood, and even claimed by early Christian writers as their own. Come along with us as we continue tracing Jesus' final steps in Scripture toward the crucifixion. Remember what He did for you by exploring where He stopped to speak with women and criminals, where He cared for His mother, died on the cross, and was buried. Follow our Savior's journey to save us—and embrace how this can impact our lives today.Receive Christians once retraced Jesus' final steps, pausing at “stations” to remember His sacrifice. In “Cross Stations,” we follow that path through Scripture. In part two, linger at the cross and the tomb as we reflect on the moment Jesus' body is taken down and laid in the darkness, and consider what His death means for your faith today. Reflect Have you ever practiced the “Stations of the Cross”? If so, what was your experience? How do you respond now to this concept? The first cross station we identify is Jesus praying alone in the garden. Read Luke 22:39–46. Notice the setting and Jesus' experience, and then think about how His prayer struggle has impacted the intimacy you now possess with God. Read Matthew 26:57–75 and 27:11–26. Where is Jesus in this cross station? What does He experience? How does His endurance affect you today? Consider the torture Jesus endured as you read Matthew 27:27–31. Can you stand with Him at this cross station and receive what He has done for you? Jesus carried His own cross until Simon of Cyrene was enlisted to help Him in John 19:17, Matthew 27:32–33, and Luke 23:26. How would you have responded if you were asked to help Jesus? Respond (Use this prayer to start a conversation with God)  “Dear Lord, You have shown us through Scripture that even small faith can be used for Your glory. Reveal to me where my faith is lacking and help me to surrender my disbelief to Your perfect plan. In Jesus' name, amen.” Discover more about the topics in this episode with these recommended resources Listen: It Is Finished - https://go.odb.org/it-is-finished-dtw  Life After Easter - https://go.odb.org/life-after-easter-dtw  Forgiveness, the Story of Easter - https://go.odb.org/forgiveness-the-story-of-easter-dtw  Read: The Perfect Savior - https://go.odb.org/the-perfect-savior-dtw  A Rumor of Hope | The Good News of Easter - https://go.odb.org/a-rumor-of-hope-the-good-news-of-easter  40 Days. 40 Words. - https://go.odb.org/40-days-40-words-dtw  Messiah's Last Words Reading Plan - https://go.odb.org/messiahs-last-words-easter-reflections-dtw  Watch: Walk in Jesus' footsteps with The Holy Land: Connecting the Land with Its Stories (Season 4) - https://go.odb.org/the-good-land-dtw

How do you stay close to Jesus when life feels full, distracted, and fast-moving? Abiding in Christ can sound simple, but living it out daily is often harder than it seems. In this episode of Kitchen Table Theology, Jeff and Tiffany continue their conversation on Jesus' teaching about the vine and the branches by focusing on two practical responsibilities of the branch: communicating with Jesus and following His example. They explain why abiding is not a weekly check-in but an ongoing relationship shaped by prayer, Scripture, dependence, and daily obedience. This episode offers a clear and practical picture of what it means to stay connected to Christ and bear fruit that lasts. What We Discussed03:00 Prayer Is More Than a Scheduled AppointmentHealthy relationships are built through constant connection, not brief, formal check-ins. Prayer is meant to be part of daily life, not limited to isolated moments.07:00 Prayer and Scripture Work TogetherCommunication with Jesus involves both speaking to Him in prayer and hearing from Him through His Word. Neglecting either one weakens the relationship.12:00 What Believers Are Meant to Imitate in JesusThe episode highlights Christ's obedience, trust, prayer life, compassion, determination, holiness, truthfulness, faithfulness, and self-sacrifice.14:00 Admiring Jesus Is Not the Same as Following HimIt is possible to respect Jesus from a distance without actually living as He lived. The Christian life calls for active imitation, not passive admiration.15:00 Practical Questions for Everyday AbidingPastor Jeff offers simple questions believers can ask throughout the day, including how Jesus would respond, what trusting Him looks like in the moment, and how to show compassion.17:00 What the Lord Will Evaluate in Our LivesGod is not simply measuring output or busyness. He is looking for what was done with Him and what was produced through connection to Christ.18:00 Abiding Is Simple, But Not EasyPastor Jeff and Tiffany close by reminding listeners that abiding is a daily, repeated choice to talk with Jesus, listen to His Word, and follow His example.“Christianity has never been meant to be a distant relationship with God. It's a close daily walk with the living Christ.” ” - Pastor Jeff Cranston

In this sermon on Roman 12:3 titled “All By Grace,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones teaches that grace is God's undeserved favor. The distinctiveness of Christianity is that it is grace that begins the Christian life and it is grace that carries the Christian through life. This is true of general grace that makes one a Christian, but also grace that gives spiritual gifts. Dr. Lloyd-Jones says it is this view of God's grace that helps balance the apostle Paul's statement about his authority while maintaining a counter-cultural view of humility. Paul can easily appeal to himself as an example to follow because he acknowledges his apostolic office is entirely undeserved grace given by the Spirit. Dr. Lloyd-Jones connects Paul's teaching in this passage to other key passages in the New Testament regarding spiritual gifts and authority in the church. The contrast between the world's view of ethics, as well as the Roman Catholic view of papal authority, stand in strong contrast to the testimony of Scripture, says Dr. Lloyd-Jones. Listen as recommends the apostle Paul's teaching on grace and reaffirms the Christian position that all is by grace. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy This millennial-coded 2011 DVD Bible study series uses Facebook lingo, which was very en vogue at the time, to encourage people to upgrade their relationship with Jesus from casual to committed. NOT A FAN, the brainchild of minister Kyle Idleman, uses a clickbait-style title to grab your attention: what do you mean you're "NOT A FAN" of Jesus? What Idleman means is that on Facebook at the time, you could click a thumbs up to "become a fan" of something you liked, a shallow and performative gesture that serves as a metaphor for going through the motions of Christianity without participating with your full heart. Going to church every Sunday is meaningless without loving the process. To illustrate this, Idleman released a serial drama of 6 DVD study episodes about fictitious Eric Nelson, a cutthroat executive and "pleasure seeking rebel" who commits his life to Christ after a stress-induced heart attack. These episodes were condensed to a feature film, which we watched this week, with interstitial sermons narrated by Idleman himself. Nelson's family, shocked at his sudden transformation, does their best to keep up with his newfound enthusiasm but doesn't exactly love the life changes. The Nelsons go from a McMansion in the suburbs to a humble farmhouse, and Eric goes from the boardroom to the soup kitchen. They stay devoted to their patriarch and go along with what he says, but don't really "feel" the love and resent the new Christian austerity. A not-so-shocking tragic ending gives the Nelsons new perspective, and the entire family learns to be Followers of Jesus, not just Fans: people whose devotion to Christ has caused them to take on great sacrifice and inconvenience. Idleman basically says that if you're not feeling the burn of Christianity in your life, you're probably not going hard enough. NOT A FAN is delightful for its now-extremely-dated branding and vocabulary, but is overall a total slog, with constant scenes of death and suffering that don't do a good job of "selling" the Christian lifestyle to casuals. But then again, this DVD is for the Followers, NOT the Fans. Father Wounds and Their Impact on Relationship with God Father wounds are defined as emotional, psychological, and spiritual pain caused by absence, neglect, abuse, lack of affirmation, or identity formation issues These wounds manifest through approval seeking, performance driven behavior, authority issues, fear of intimacy or abandonment, anger, passivity, or emotional shutdown Historical experiences and trauma can create distorted lenses that affect how people perceive and relate to Heavenly Father The goal is to experience healing and repair these wounds to match how Heavenly Father actually operates with His children Identity as Children of God Through Adoption Romans 8:12-17 establishes the foundation that believers receive the spirit of adoption as sons and daughters rather than living according to the flesh The Spirit of God leads believers to cry out "Abba Father" which represents both intimacy and honor in the relationship This adoption creates a longing and desire for reconciliation and connection with Heavenly Father that wells up from within Being led by the Spirit of God redefines behavior systems and establishes a completely different inheritance and new order in life Access to the Father and Belonging in God's Household Ephesians 2:18-22 describes how believers have access in one spirit to the Father and are no longer strangers but fellow citizens and members of God's household This access to Heavenly Father should be the source of confidence and value rather than worldly measures like wealth, attractiveness, or skills Belonging derives from what Jesus established rather than from personal perfection, and believers are built together as a dwelling place for God by the Spirit Growth and development occur within this belonging rather than perfection being a prerequisite for acceptance Authority Wounds and Proper Response to Divine Discipline Hebrews 12:3-17 teaches that the Lord disciplines those He loves and chastises every son whom He receives Rebellion against authority and discipline indicates an authority wound that causes people to resist biblical teachings about submission and correction Discipline and reproof from God should be interpreted as evidence of love and adoption rather than rejection Believers should ask God for discipline and be concerned if they cannot feel the hand of the vine dresser pruning or the gardener pulling weeds in their lives The Foundation of God's Love in Salvation John 3:16 establishes that the entire story of salvation begins with Heavenly Father's love for the world, demonstrated through giving His only Son Understanding God requires seeing Him through the prism and lens of love, as misunderstanding occurs when this foundation is missing 1 John 3:1 emphasizes that believers are called children of God because God first loved them, not because of merit or worth Merit-based salvation and performance-oriented identity are destroyed in the face of grace and Jesus' sacrifice Receiving God's Perfect and Unconditional Love God's love must go deep enough to confront areas where people have been persuaded by hate, rejection, and conditional love The process requires digging deep like the man who built his house on the rock, allowing God's love to uproot false foundations of belonging God's love is abundant and infinite, unlike human love which is finite and limited, so believers should receive the fullness without fear of depriving others This love must be allowed to reach places where people have only known shame, as demonstrated in Jesus' treatment of the woman caught in adultery God Image and Its Critical Importance A.W Tozer's famous quote states that what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us God images are often formed by parents, authority figures, church culture, personal wounds, or trauma How people see God determines what they're willing to receive, what they're willing to repent of, and how they will function in various life roles This God concept is critical to being and defines tremendously how people grow and repent Approaching God with Confidence Through Prayer Matthew 7:7-11 teaches believers to ask, seek, and knock with confidence, knowing that God gives good gifts to His children Many people hesitate to ask God for things due to insecurity or feeling unworthy compared to others with greater needs The scripture emphasizes that there is no shortage of God's goodness and believers should not define their Christianity according to historical brokenness Overcoming fear of rejection allows people to approach God boldly as sons and daughters rather than orphans Next steps The congregation is called to receive the spirit of adoption fully and profoundly, breaking every other competing foundation and uprooting false beliefs about belonging Healing from father wounds, authority wounds, and love wounds must occur to properly relate to Heavenly Father as a good father who disciplines in love Believers need to courageously receive their spiritual inheritance and overcome their historical earthly inheritance through the transforming power of God's adoption
