InterCities is a six-part podcast series from Open City. In it, we travel to a number of cities and boroughs around the world that have transformed over time to discover what we can learn from these places' achievements, struggles, successes and mistakes. In this episode, our host Owen Hatherley is joined by the Israeli-born, UK-based academic and writer Dr Yair Wallach who specialises in the urban history of the Middle East. Today the focus is his 2020 book โA City in Fragments: Urban Text in Modern Jerusalemโ which explores the city's history through ephemera and urban text and we use it to look more closely at the history of the city of Jerusalem under the British mandate (1918 - 1948). During this time, the British sought to impose a timeless image on Jerusalem and a number of intriguing characters - including Arts and Crafts architect CR Ashby - were involved in its aesthetic transformation. We also look at the Palestinians who challenged British and Zionist narratives through modernist and poetic expressions and whether an understanding of this time can help us in the context of the conflict today. The Author Events Series presents Rebecca Romneyย | Jane Austen's Bookshelf: A Rare Book Collector's Quest to Find the Women Writers Who Shaped a Legendย REGISTER In Conversation withย Allie Alvisย Jane Austen's Bookshelf investigates the disappearance of Austen's heroes--women writers who were erased from the Western canon--to reveal who they were, what they meant to Austen, and how they were forgotten. Each chapter profiles a different writer including Frances Burney, Ann Radcliffe, Charlotte Lennox, Charlotte Smith, Hannah More, Elizabeth Inchbald, Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi, and Maria Edgeworth--and recounts Romney's experience reading them, finding rare copies of their works, and drawing on connections between their words and Austen's. Romney collects the once-famed works of these forgotten writers, physically recreating Austen's bookshelf and making a convincing case for why these books should be placed back on the to-be-read pile of all book lovers today. Jane Austen's Bookshelf will encourage you to look beyond assigned reading lists, question who decides what belongs there, and build your very own collection of favorite novels. Rebecca Romney is a rare book dealer and the cofounder of Type Punch Matrix, a rare book company based in Washington, DC.ย Rebecca is the authorย Printer's Error: Irreverent Stories from Book Historyย (HarperCollins; with JP Romney) andย The Romance Novel in English: A Survey in Rare Books, 1769-1999; herย current book isย Janeย Austen's Bookshelf (Simon & Schuster), chronicling her efforts to build a book collection ofย Austen's favorite women writers.ย Since 2011 she has appeared as the rare book specialist on the History Channel's showย Pawn Stars; she was also featured in the 2019 documentaryย The Booksellers.ย Allie Alvis is Curator of Special Collections of the Winterthur Library, where they are responsible for the stewardship and engagement of the collection. They have previously worked as an antiquarian bookseller at Type Punch Matrix (Washington, DC) and as the special collections reference librarian for the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. Allie's research is diverse and far-reaching, with interests in physical patterns of use in books, the history of ephemera, and Arts and Crafts bookbindings. They are particularly involved in the study and act of using social media for communicating book history, and maintain popular accounts across various platforms as Book Historia. This week on the Radio Sessions, a discussion that includes some info on a food drive that may be over by the time you're listening but it also includes information that sadly, will not be over any time soon, and that's information on the local food bank, the need and how you can help. Kendall Strome joins us for that. And because the Kinsmen and Kinettes are helping with that, we thought we'd have them join in to chat about their respective clubs and some of the other things they do, not the least of which are The Festival of Arts and Crafts and Kinsmen Summerfest, both happening in early July this year. We get all the details with Alex Irvin and Janet Wunnick.

In a conversation moderated by Emmy-nominated editor Michael Ruscio, ACE, three of the pros behind FX'sย Say Nothingย โ creator and writer Joshua Zetumer, director Michael Lennox and cinematographer Stephen Murphy โ delve into the process of crafting the haunting historical drama. Adapted from the nonfiction book of the same name by Patrick Radden Keefe, the scripted series conveys the complexity of the Troubles in Northern Ireland during the 1970s, '80s and '90s. Lennox, a Northern Ireland native, originally thought the Troubles were a story that he โ like anyone from the area โ knew in full. But his experience on the series opened his eyes to many of the details and horrors from the traumatic period. โWe know what happened in the late '60s to the present day, but I didn't quite know it to this depth,โ he says. โI felt that this could be an important piece of television which asked some really profound and tough and interesting questions, and I wanted to be part of that.โ

In this episode recorded live on May 8 at the American Society of Cinematographers Clubhouse in Los Angeles, production designer Franรงois Audouyon (whose credits include A Complete Unknown) moderates a conversation with three of the creators behind Amazon Prime Video's 'รtoile': production designer Bill Groom, choreographer Marguerite Derricks and director of photography M. David Mullen, ASC. For the comedy set in the rarefied world of professional ballet, the team cast 20 professional dancers in both Paris and New York โ not to mention as many as 80 SAG-AFTRA dancers for company class scenes โ and shot primarily on location and in real theaters in the two cities. "I said to our producer, if we can't go to Paris and find locations to shoot in, we should all be fired," Groom says. "But we ended up building so much there, because Paris is a really difficult place to shoot.

In this episode recorded live on May 8 at the American Society of Cinematographers Clubhouse in Los Angeles, director Jennifer Arnold speaks with three of the creators behind Netflix's American Primeval: director of photography Jacques Jouffret, ASC, makeup department head Howard Berger and sound designer Wylie Stateman. The limited series follows the battle for control of the American West in 1857 through the eyes of a mother (Betty Gilpin) and son, on the run with the help of a steely mountain man (Taylor Kitsch). โBrutal, dirty and grimy,โ Jouffert says, is what director Peter Berg wanted for the 19th century Western, and the three artisans share how they delivered, shooting in changeable weather and light at 10,000 feet, creating authentic indigenous looks and developing a distinct sonic signature for cold wind.

Greg Jenner is joined in Victorian England by Dr Isabella Rosner and comedian Cariad Lloyd to learn all about the ethos, practitioners and creations of the Arts and Crafts movement. Most people have heard of William Morris, one of the leaders of the Arts and Crafts movement that came to prominence in England in the last decades of the 19th Century. His abstract, nature-inspired designs still adorn everything from wallpaper and curtains to notebooks and even dog beds. And the company he founded, Morris & Co., is still going strong. But the history of this artistic movement, and the other creatives who were involved, is less well known.Arts and Crafts, which advocated a return to traditional handicrafts like needlework, carpentry and ceramics, was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and included a strong socialist vision: its practitioners wanted everyone to have access to art, and to be able to enjoy homes that were comfortable, functional and beautiful. This episode explores Morris and other creatives both in and outside his circle, including Edward Burne-Jones, May Morris, Gertrude Jekyll and Philip Webb. It looks at the ethos that inspired them, the homes and artworks they created, and asks how radical their political beliefs really were. This is a radio edit of the original podcast episode.
