In a blast from the past this week, the director of Soundtrec studio and the Video Games Orchestra, Shota Nakama is here on the show! I used to see his concerts all the time when I was living in Boston and hosting Pixel Pizza on the radio about a decade ago. Most famously at the moment, Shota has been helming the Sonic Symphony World Tour! Together we reminisce on the early days of VGO, talk about changing up your daily routine, and making deadlines. We finish our long Final Fantasy adventure by playing Square's largest single player Final Fantasy yet. But does size equal quality? Does it equal ambition? We have many thoughts about this and about where the entire Final Fantasy VII Remake Project has gone and is heading in this enormous podcast about an equally enormous game. After dozens of hours, we are left with one simple question: why do we do this to ourselves? 1. Because we were ready to game2. Because we were sure of quality3. While RPGs have no shortage of high-energy moments requiring intense strategizing, quick reflexes, or simply a box of tissues for the more emotional moments, it's important to have downtime between those to balance everything out. This episode is about "safe spaces" in RPGs, and our panelists did not always choose the kinds of song we expected of one another. We enjoyed hearing the various ways each of us wanted to represent safe spaces through a variety of musical means, and we'd love to hear your favorite music in this vein as well!Featuring: Mike Salbato, Audra Bowling, Gio Castillo, Tin Manuel; Edited by Paul DennisLinks for this episodeYouTube: Final Fantasy XV "Uncovered" TrailerRhythm Encounter 104 - Like a Dragon: Rhythm! | RPGFanTracklist0:06:31 - Maiden in Black (Shunsuke Kida) - Demon's Souls0:10:51 - Yohan Romantic (Spencer Bambrick) - Eternights0:26:48 - By the Campfire (Norikazu Miura) - Suikoden Tactics0:28:23 - Our Terms (Takafumi Imamura) - Final Fantasy XVI0:49:20 - Brink of Time (Yasunori Mitsuda) - Chrono Trigger0:51:44 - New Serena (Yuichi Kanatani) - Yakuza 41:23:30 - Song of the Ancients / Hollow Dreams (Keiichi Okabe, arr. Final Fantasy fans are familiar with a range of characters meeting their demise and dissolving into crystal dust, and Final Fantasy XVI does not shy away from the series' tradition. In this episode, we go through every death in Final Fantasy XVI in chronological order and discuss who met their untimely end, how they died, and how it impacted the rest of the story. From being stabbed by a sword to being chopped by an ax to being lasered by a dragon and everything in between -- the FF16 grim reaper claims heroes, villains, and no-names alike, only this time, the crystal dust is replaced by blood splatter. Two and a half years ago, we created a bit in which Todd, Kyle and Matt act as Andrew's collective dads in a Final Fantasy world. Then, a year and a half ago, we revisited this concept a second time. WELL, everyone knows you can't have a trilogy without a third entry. So today we welcome back Sad Dad, Bad Dad and Rad Dad for another Final Fantasy episode! This time we're asking the age old questions, which Final Fantasy location would be the best place to retire? Matt introduces the family to his entrepreneurial dreams. Todd discusses the dad-tastic urge to visit historical battlefields. Kyle makes the required Heavensward joke. Recommended reading: Debate This! Ep. 80: My Man-Sized Step-Wolf Debate This!
