On a warm April evening in 2025, Belvue Rooftop Marbella became a living canvas of sound and sky. In a rare live-recorded session, DJ Mario Z delivered an unforgettable blend of Jazzy Deep and Afro Latin House — a seamless fusion of timeless melodies and modern rhythm that matched the elegance of the setting sun. From the iconic soul of Louis Armstrong's Summertime to the sensual sway of Lisa Ono's Bésame Mucho, and the wistful charm of Yves Montand's Les Feuilles Mortes, each track was handpicked to stir both memory and motion. The set moved effortlessly through continents and decades, layering Afro Latin percussion, smoky jazz undertones, and deep house textures into a rich, immersive experience. This wasn't just a DJ set — it was a cinematic sound journey, recorded live as Marbella glowed gold in the twilight. An evening where music didn't just accompany the sunset — it became part of it.

Reflexión sobre la canción "We Have All the Time in the World", interpretada por Louis Armstrong y también por Iggy Pop. Happy Friday, happy Good Friday, happy Easter & happy Everything Is Content Day!This week on the podcast we're talking about Black Mirror season 7, The celestial sisters who went to space, & ask whether or not you can be too hot to work.Charlie Brooker's dystopian tech anthology Black Mirror is back for its seven series, and lots of the reviews have been really positive saying it's one of the most human series yet, and a return to its best form i.e. its first season. This one is star-studded, with Chris O'Dowd, Tracey Ellis Ross, Issa ray, Emma Corrin, Rashida Jones and Paul Giamatti to truly only name a few.Next up, in what sounds like an episode of Black Mirror but isn't... Katy Perry went to space… for eleven minutes. She was joined by Bezos's fiancée Lauren Sánchez and CBS presenter Gayle King, who was reported to have said a highlight of the flight was hearing Perry sing Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World'. We discuss. And finally, we are talking about t-shirts. Okay, not quite. We're talking about a debate which was sparked on X, in part, by pictures of two t-shirts. Here's what happened- on April 8th the writer Ashley Reese tweeted this as part of a wider conversation about women and work. She wrote: “1) women have always worked 2) it's incredible that women are able to be financially independent in ways that were not as common just a few generations ago and I'm not charmed by jokes—especially from other women—about how gainful employment is the worst thing to happen to women.”Is it that deep? Or is it just some silly t-shirts? Terwyl hulle teruggekeer het, het Perry What a Wonderful World deur Louis Armstrong gesing. Sy sê dis 'n belangrike liedjie:

Take a trip with us to the most revolutionary decade in jazz (1923-1933), when a young Louis Armstrong was creating a new improvisational vocabulary in real-time. This isn't the “Wonderful World” Satchmo most know, but the young gunner whose genius trumpet solos on “West End Blues” and “Tight Like This” were toppling trumpet kings. We break down Pops' evolution from King Oliver's second to pioneering frontman, explore his inventive scat singing (supposedly born when he dropped his lyric sheet), and trace how his massive popularity caught the attention of Chicago gangsters – careful now! From his recordings with Earl “Fatha” Hines to “Black and Blue” – the first jazz song addressing racism – hear exactly why we say there would be no jazz without Louis Armstrong.Link to Spotify PlaylistABOUT OPEN STUDIO------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As the premier online jazz education platform, with an ever-expanding course library and 20,000+ members, Open Studio (OS) has everything you need to excel and thrive on your jazz journey.Featuring everything from beginner to advanced lessons, engaging courses from A-list instructors, step-by-step curriculum, real-time classes and a thriving and incredibly supportive community, OS is the perfect platform to level up your jazz playing, whether you're a total beginner, or an advanced pro-level improvisor.Try OS Membership today! → https://osjazz.link/about
We had the pleasure of interviewing Sofía Valdés over Zoom video!Acclaimed Panamanian singer-songwriter Sofía Valdés unveils her anxiously awaited self-titled debut album, Sofía Valdés, out now via Warner Records. In bringing the 10-track album to life, Sofía worked extensively with producers Michael Uzowuru (known for his work on groundbreaking albums like Rosalía's Motomami and SZA's Ctrl), Alex Goose (Vince Staples, Childish Gambino) and Carter Lang (SZA, Lykke Li), as well as in-demand musicians like Local Natives guitarist Ryan Hahn and Diana Gordon. From the epic “Tacones Por La Puerta” featuring cinematic strings from acclaimed Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai to the guitar-driven funk of “Already Yours” and the tender plea on “Un Momento,” the album affirms Sofía as a bold and eloquent songwriter inspired by her family's deep, multi-generational connection to music. She paved the way for the album's arrival with fan favorite collaborations with Latin sensations DannyLux on “Lento” and Cuco on “How's That Working Out,” which earned widespread critical praise, including Rolling Stone who hailed its “modern bossa nova blend of jangly guitar and sleek beats perfect for late summer,” and Ones To Watch who called it “a collab of indie Latino royalty."Her catalog to date — including her previous EPs Silvia, In Bloom, and Ventura — has received a long list of critical acclaim from the likes of NPR, W Magazine, Interview Magazine, NYLON, and many more for her beautifully original blend of bossa nova, folk, and pop.ABOUT SOFÍA VALDÉS Sofia Valdes, a singer/songwriter born and bred in Panama, creates the kind of emo onally honest and beautifully original pop music that could only come from years of exploration. After learning to play guitar at the age of eight and writing her first song at 13, the independent-minded artist sharpened her craft in part by building an eclectic sonic vocabulary informed by everything from folk and bossa nova to '60s Motown and '70s soul. Valdes alchemizes those inspira ons into a sound all her own, gracing each track with her indelible songwriting and beguiling voice. With its transcendent melodies and shapeshifting rhythms, Ventura is an elegant introduction the vibrant musicality that may very well be in Valdes's blood: her great-grandfather was the legendary Cuban musician Miguelito Valdes, and her great-great grandmother was Silvia De Grasse (a Panamanian singer who once performed with Louis Armstrong). Offering more indelible proof that a great song can enjoy many lives and enthrall multiple generations, Ellis Hall's timeless, haunting ballad “Some Days Were Meant for Rain” is now the second single from In the World, the debut album of WHAT!!!!, the legendary vocalist and multi-instrumentalist's duo with Grammy winning keyboardist George Whitty. The track follows fast on the heels of the release of the powerhouse, eclectic 10-track collection and the October 2024 drop of its lead single, “Die Living,” The first song recorded for the project, “Hug Me” is an expansive anthemic power ballad that pays tribute to the tenacity and resolve of the citizens of Ukraine in the face of Russia's invasion and the ongoing war. In addition to his years with the group Tower of Power, Hall – who has been sightless since age 18 - fronted the Ellis Hall Group in the 70s, has written over 4000 soul, gospel, blues and pop songs, performed with the likes of Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Herbie Hancock, George Benson and Maurice White and recorded with John Klemmer, George Duke and Kenny G, among countless others. He has also written and performed on many film soundtracks including The Lion King 2, Shrek 2, Invincible and Bruce Almighty. He also sang a Louis Armstrong tune in the Steven Spielberg film Catch Me If You Can. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)
This is a is the story of how New York-based pianist, composer, arranger and educator, Caili O'Doherty, developed and recently released an album called ‘Bluer Than Blue' which honors the overlooked genius of Lillian “Lil” Hardin Armstrong. If that name is somewhat familiar to you, it's because this highly talented artist and composer in her own right was married to none other than Louis Satchmo Armstrong. Lil was Armstrong's second wife, and they collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s. But it was actually Lil who wrote many famous, classic tunes of that early jazz era. Caili discovered Lil's prolific background while taking a course from Ricky Riccardi, the Director of Research Collections for the Louis Armstrong Museum titled, “The Music of Louis Armstrong.” Not only did it whet Caili's appetite to learn more about this unsung Jazz heroine, but also led to assembling her core trio of Tamir Schmerling on bass, drummer Cory Cox ,and saxophonist Nicole Glover, along with special guest vocalists Tahria Clayton and Michael Mayo, to record Lil Hardin Armstrong's music. My conversation begins with Caili diving into even more about Lil's early career as she unravels for us details of this little-known magical, musical history.
TDA The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com Garth Heckman Title: Created to Be You: Embracing God's Design Introduction: Begin by acknowledging that in today's world, there's a lot of pressure to conform, to fit into certain molds. But what does God's Word say about our individuality? Ask the group: "Have you ever felt pressure to be someone you're not? Where does that pressure come from?" Scripture Readings: Psalm 139:13-16: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." Discussion points: What does it mean to be "fearfully and wonderfully made"? How does this passage emphasize God's intentionality in creating each of us? How does the fact that God saw your "unformed body" and ordained your days, indicate his personal involvement in our lives? Genesis 1:27: "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." I have learned early on if I am singing a song that I wrote… don't worry about how my voice lines up to anyone else's… Do you think Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Kim Carnes, Ronnie James Dio, Louis Armstrong, Tom Waits, Stephen Pearcy… I could go on and on… do you think they wished they sounded like Adelle? NOT a chance, they would not be famous right now… they are themselves and famous because of it. If I preach a sermon… I have many times wished I could preach like other pastors and communicators… their set up, their delivery, their insight, their knowledge beyond scripture… WOW… but I have learned I am always at my best when I am just me. Discussion points: What does it mean to be created "in God's image”? IT TRULY MEANS TO BE WHO HE CREATED YOU TO BE. How does this verse establish our inherent worth and dignity? How does this verse indicate that all humans have value, and are created uniquely? 1 Corinthians 12:12-27: This passage speaks of the body of Christ, with each member having a unique and vital function. Discussion points: How does this analogy illustrate the importance of our individual gifts and contributions? How does this passage encourage us to value our differences and recognize our interdependence? How does this apply to our individual personalities, and giftings? Romans 12:2: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Discussion points: What does it mean to "not conform to the pattern of this world"? How does the renewing of our minds help us embrace our true selves? How does knowing God's will relate to being our authentic selves? Key Takeaways: God's intentional design: God created each of us with unique gifts, talents, and personalities. Value in individuality: Our differences are not flaws but essential parts of God's plan. Freedom from conformity: We are called to live authentically, not to imitate the world's standards. God's image: Each person bears the image of God, therefore each person has great value. The body of Christ: Our individual uniqueness is vital to the body of Christ. Application: Encourage participants to reflect on their own unique qualities and how they can use them to serve God and others. Discuss practical ways to resist the pressure to conform and embrace their true selves. Pray for the group, that they may find the strength to be whom God created them to be. Closing: Remind everyone that God loves them unconditionally and celebrates their individuality. Encourage them to walk in confidence, knowing that they are fearfully and wonderfully made

Let the show’s 5th year begin! LTS regular Micki Maynard turned me onto this one. Paul Newman and Sidney Pottier star as jazz musicians in Paris. Their love interests are Joanne Woodward and Dihann Caroll, repectively. Louis Armstrong plays a character called Wild Man Moore. If my synopsis seems superficial, that’s because I haven’t actually seen this one. But I love the cast, and I love the idea that Sidney and Diahann are doing something more interesting than playing that one Black person in the movie. So come discover this one along with me.
