On this episode of Looking Outside we explore the intersection of creativity with marketing and what it takes to take a good brand to a great brand. Joining us is marketing and strategy leader, Juan Isaza, Chief strategy officer at DDB Latina, and Head of Brand and Social Media Strategy at creative agency 14.While today Juan is an award winning strategist and experienced marketer, he didn't start in the field. Ever since he was seven years old, Juan wanted to be a journalist. But having done a stint at a Columbian newspaper, after studying journalism and communications, he saw quickly that his love of uncovering great stories and telling them in a compelling way was better served in the world of advertising.Juan shares how his journalism background helps him in strategy; particularly in being resourceful and telling engaging stories that hook the audience. But equally in telling better stories about people, by discovering them in unexpected places. Juan says this ability to find the emotive connection with culture is the biggest shift in communication taking place, and is a fruitful space for marketing. But it's not necessarily easy. Jo and Juan discuss how brands are operating in emotional battle fields right now within which they can get caught on the "wrong" side or in the middle. Juan's advice to brands is not to talk unless you have the credentials for it, based on actions already taken. This is the reason consumers are getting tired of brands meddling in political or social issues, Juan says, and just because they don't want brands to get involved in politics doesn't mean they don't want brands to do good things for society. “Your best cause is the thing you're living inside your company,” Juan stresses. Juan also shares his personal reflections of culture in the advertising world, where stereotyping still happens and freedoms can be inhibited. He says a lot of work is still to be done, and it needs to start with empathy, understanding and in-room representation. It's part of the reason why Juan won DEI person of the year from the New York Festival for his work managing DDB Mexico, and it can – as the proof shows – lead to greater creativity. Juan and Jo discuss the formula for successful campaigns, and the need for brands to leverage the power of creativity in their content, by opening themselves to more experimentation. Juan has seen a positive move over time towards long term brand building, without compromising short term measurement metrics, but stresses that the old school thinking of marketers in trying to control every aspect of their brand and planning every element of how their brand will show up, limits their ability to inject spontaneity into their work – a key element of creative marketing.>>>To look outside, Juan looks for ideas in everything he observes. Inspiration for him can come from any place, information, source or conversation. He finds them often in papers from philosophers and sociologists who are analyzing societal shifts at a macro level. Every year, Juan publishes a trend report, which started as a personal exercise, motivated by curiosity and led by a simple desired out come to discovery key topics emerging for brands. For this, Juan takes a few months towards the end of the year to create a mind map,, then synthesizes it at the quiet last week of the year. >>>Juan Isaza is the Chief Strategy Officer at DDB Latina and leads the global Strategy and Social Media at 14, the DDB agency for SEAT and CUPRA brands (Volkswagen Group). He has worked in regional and global projects for major international brands such as Volkswagen, McDonald's, Telefónica, BBVA, Bridgestone, Mars, and Clorox. Where we want to contribute to the right set of data when we talk open source data. We want to make sure that we have the right data to train this model in order to get the right outcome. We want to provide a lens of, ‘All right, you are this persona. How would you say this thing?' I do think that from a lot of what the LLMs have today, the outcome of those words are still missing. And we need to solve that. Like, ‘Is this piece of writing actually going to achieve the outcome I want versus am I following legal's guidelines? Am I technically correct? Is my CEO going to like it?' That doesn't mean you're achieving impact in the world. There's an aspect there where we've given feedback loops, it seems, to be like, ‘Did I like the answer or not?' But not, ‘Did I take an action?' As we get to autonomousness, we're going to have to have an outcome or multiple outcomes associated with the reward of the system.” – Charna Parkey“I personally believe that all cognition is bias. My degree is in cognitive science. One of the things that we trained on is attention. And to pay attention, literally means to selectively choose what data is coming in from the world that you're going to pay attention to and what you're going to discard. Which is also, to me, the definition of bias. All cognition is bias, but what do we care about? Do you trust this thing? What does that mean? Well, do you trust it to do these particular actions to a level of consistency in this particular domain? It doesn't mean that you're going to trust it in all environments. There's a lot more nuance that hopefully will evolve in this strange age of nuanced destruction machines.” – Sam Ramji-------------------Episode Timestamps:(01:04): Sam and Charna catch up (06:05): Sam explains his new company, Sailplane (14:21): How Charna's thinking has evolved during the LLM explosion(25:45): Sam's thoughts after 5 seasons of Open||Source||Data(38:52): What Charna is looking forward to in the next season of the podcast(40:44): A question Sam wishes to be asked(45:45): Backstage takeaways with executive producer, Audra Montenegro-------------------Links:LinkedIn - Connect with CharnaLinkedIn - Connect with SamLearn more about Sailplane

October 17, 2022: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanzwitt/ (Ryan Witt), Industries Solutions and Strategy Leader at https://www.proofpoint.com/us (Proofpoint) joins Bill for the news. The CommonSpirit ransomware attack has delayed patient care at hospitals across the US. What does this kind of outage mean for patient safety? And what does it show about the risks of merger and acquisitions in healthcare? For an acquisition to work, the executives and board need to understand the technical debt, security and operational risks. It's time to modernize the healthcare C-suite. For organizations to succeed in the future, their leaders must have roles in strategy, experience, wellness, diversity and more. Health equity is a business and moral imperative. How can we use this to drive ‘health' care instead of just ‘sick' care? Key Points: The core mission of healthcare is patient care and patient safety. If that's not happening, then undoubtedly, you're impacting the patient in an adverse way.  Do you think we'll ever see technology or security posture be a reason for a M&A not moving forward in healthcare?  Ransomware attacks are an uncomfortable conversation for US health systems. We need to start addressing them as a community, as an industry and as a nation. https://www.proofpoint.com/us (Proofpoint) Stories: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/security/ransomware-attack-delays-patient-care-hospitals-us-rcna50919 (Ransomware attack delays patient care at hospitals across the US - NBC) https://www.linkedin.com/posts/billjrussell_healthcare-healthit-cybersecurity-activity-6985190905519468544-jO6p?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop (LinkedIn Poll: CommonSpirit Health suffered a significant ransom event after growing through M&A to over $30B in revenue. It was my distinct pleasure to have Pete Tiliakos, global payroll product strategy leader for Alight Solutions, as my guest for this episode of the #HRTechChat video podcast. Pete's latest role is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg when it comes to his experience, expertise and, really, authority in the domain of payroll. Most recently, Pete was an analyst at two different firms. Before that, he was payroll solution architect at IBM and senior consultant, human capital management, at Deloitte Consulting, in that order. Back in the early aughts, notably, he was payroll leader for shared services at Disney Worldwide. Put differently, to say Pete is an expert in payroll is an understatement. Returning to the present, "It's an exciting time to be in the industry," said Pete, who's also a member of our Global Executive Advisory Council. "It feels like all that experience has really caught a wave." During our chat, we shared takeaways in the wake of this year's triumphant return of the HR Technology Conference & Expo. Triumphant does seem like an appropriate word. Regarding the conference, "To me that was the biggest, boldest, most vibrant, most alive event I've seen in a long time," Pete said. "There's a lot of talk about a recession and a slowdown and things, but what we're seeing is that talent is still very important. And then, of course, we saw payroll well represented." The possibilities around payroll are greater and more progressive today than we even would have fathomed 10 years ago. The train has left the station, so to speak, and our concept of what payroll can and does mean has expanded. "I just think it's great to see all the investment and focus on payroll," Pete said. "COVID really provided that spotlight, where payroll became infinitely more important compared to how it had been treated in the past." It's almost as if business leaders are finally seeing the processing of payroll for what it is: not a mere cost to contain, but an investment, just as their people's pay itself is an investment, too. Pete and I delved deeply into all of this, the transformation of payroll — as evidenced by our conversations out in the wild, at HR Technology Conference — and how payroll professionals can seize the moment to become strategic advisors to their organizations. It's one thing to be highly skilled in work that organizational leadership may view as background noise. It's quite another to become bearers of crucially informative data that can change the C-suite's basic understanding of the workforce. That's when payroll and strategy start to occupy the same sentences. I really enjoyed this discussion with Pete and highly encourage readers to tune into this episode.

August 29, 2022: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanzwitt/ (Ryan Witt), Industries Solutions and Strategy Leader at https://www.proofpoint.com/us (Proofpoint) joins Bill for the news. IBM reports that cybersecurity attacks cost healthcare systems more than any other sector. At $10.1 million per breach, that's a 42% increase from 2020. When we talk about cybersecurity, we often like to talk about the financial elements of a breach. No doubt the financial impact is extremely important and can cost an organization dearly if they're not prepared. You also often hear about the reputation impact a breach has on an organization when the breach hits the local news and their organization lives in infamy on the HHS wall of shame. What we hear less talk about is the impact on patient safety when a breach occurs. This was the topic of discussion with cybersecurity experts, Ryan Witt, Industries Solutions and Strategy Leader at Proofpoint, and Mike Gregory, Healthcare Chief Information Security Officer at CDW, when we sat down at the HIMSS 2022 annual conference.
