Rising from the ashes of the defunct Hummer brand, the team at GMC gave the oversized off-roader a new lease on life as a model in its lineup. Leaning into Hummer's legacy, this GMC Hummer is appropriately large and carries a hefty price tag. Unlike its stand-alone predecessor, the reborn GMC Hummer showcased GM's massive Ultium battery-electric platform and previewed the rollout of the company's larger battery-electric offerings. Packing a 205 kWh battery pack underneath its shell. This large battery pack feeds either two or three electric motors, depending on how your rig is configured. In top trim, GMC says the Hummer EV throws 1,000 hp and over 1,200 lv-ft of torque toward the wheels. This potent power unit can shuffle this nearly five-ton pickup truck to 60 mph in an astounding 3.3 seconds. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Mark Vaughn climbs behind the wheel of a 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and puts it through its paces. Vaughn takes you on a guided tour of the GMC Hummer EV and highlights some of his favorite features and what it's like to experience in person. Later in the show, Vaughn takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Vaughn chats with host Wesley Wren about the reborn Hummer brand, using the Hummer EV pickup as a pickup, and more. Closing the show, the pair try to wrap their heads around this massive EV.

The GMC Hummer has had an interesting evolution by anyone's standards. What started as a gas guzzling monster SUV back in the 1990s and early aughts fell victim to the economic crunch and high gas prices of the Great Recession. But a decade or so after killing the model, GMC revealed that it would have new life in the form of an all-electric.That said, a lot has changed since the 2020 announcement, and as automakers have expanded their electric portfolios, they've just as quickly scaled them back. And while GMC had plans for several trims of the Hummer – including an entry version called the EV2 that was due out this spring – this is reportedly being adjusted, with GM Authority reporting the $86,000 base model is no longer in the works.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

Tony shared Cadillac's near- and midterm electrification plans, and shared rollout plans for the coming Lyric, Celestiq, Escalade IQ, Vistiq, and Optiq. In the final segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Women” quiz, which featured questions regarding the brands women most often choose when purchasing a new vehicle. Quiz questions based on a recent S&P Global report.

Tesla wants to split its stock so it can pay a stock dividend to shareholders, according to a filing Monday. A stock dividend is a dividend paid to shareholders in the form of additional company shares instead of cash. These dividends do not affect the value of a company, but they dilute its share price. The company last split its stock in August 2020. The shares have more than doubled since that 5-for-1 split took effect on Aug. 31, 2020. FedEx announced it was testing autonomous delivery trucks in China in late 2021 through a collaboration with Neolix, a self-driving logistics company based in the country. FedEx has previously launched initiatives towards autonomous vehicle usage, collaborating with companies including Nuro, DEKA Development Research, Aurora and Paccar. The company announced Monday that Smith will become executive chair and Ray Subramaniam, current chief operating officer, will succeed him. The leadership change will take place on June 1. Smith founded FedEx in 1973 while Subramaniam joined the company in 1991. General Motors has received more than 65,000 reservations for its electric GMC Hummer pickups and SUVs, as the automaker attempts to expedite production of the vehicles to meet demand. The reservations number is higher than the automaker's initial expectations, according to Duncan Aldred, global vice president of GMC. The number of people converting their reservations into orders to buy the Hummer pickup, about 95%, is also higher than expected.

REPORT: PORSCHE IS WORKING ON A 911 SPORTS CAR POWERED BY SOLID-STATE BATTERIES - An electric Porsche 911 powered by solid-state batteries is in the works, according to a recent report from German publication Manager Magazin - We do know that Porsche parent Volkswagen has been longtime investor in solid-state battery firm QuantumScape, though. VW previously said it sees solid-state tech arriving later in the decade capable of getting an 80% charge in as little as 12 minutes. Perhaps that's the tech it's testing on the 911. The number of people converting their reservations into orders to buy the Hummer pickup, about 95%, is also higher than expected, he said. - “Production's actually slightly ahead of plan and we're putting things in place now to actually expedite that as well, so we can deliver these reservations quicker than we originally thought,” he told CNBC here during a media event. “We're seeing momentum building.” - The Hummer EV pickup is for sale, but new orders would not likely be fulfilled until 2024 due to the number of current reservations - Reservations for the electric Hummers have largely been for the pickup because it was launched first, but newer reservations have been more evenly split between the truck and SUV, according to Megan Hart, assistant marketing manager for Hummer. - March has been the best month for reservations aside from when the vehicles were unveiled, Aldred said. GMC started advertising for the Hummer EV pickup late last month - Due to the price of the vehicle, volumes are lower than other trucks, but it's still profitable, Aldred said. The other Cadillac EVs include an electrified variant of the popular Cadillac Escalade SUV, two new electrified crossovers, and the new Cadillac Celestiq halo sedan. Electric vehicle owner Max Wilkinson - who is also a Cheltenham Councillor - recently bought a four-year-old hybrid Mini Countryman. He went home - but returned two hours later by which time the hybrid Mini was about half-charged. A week later Max received a penalty notice saying he'd been fined £90. Mr Wilkinson has paid the fine and doesn't dispute it. But he does think it doesn't quite make sense to restrict car charging to 90 minutes as well. - He said: “It seems illogical that quite a lot of EV and hybrid owners won't be allowed to spend enough time in the car park to get a full charge.” Email me any feedback to: hello@evnewsdaily.com It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. UNVEILING OF THE ELECTRIC SILVERADO PICKUP WILL BE ONLINE - Each year, hundreds of companies, including the world's top automakers, travel to Las Vegas for the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to show off their latest products. But the pandemic resulted in the cancellation of last year's in-person events. - One of the most anticipated events was that automaker General Motors was to reveal its new fully electric Silverado pickup for the first time. But those plans have now been scrapped due to lingering covid concerns. - GM Chief Executive Mary Barra had been scheduled to give a keynote speech at the annual conference on Jan. 5, where the electric Silverado pickup truck was to be revealed for the first time. The press conference and keynote will now be presented remotely, - The electric Silverado will go into production late next year at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. The fully-electric truck will have a range of more than 400 miles on a full charge, according to GM. Original Source : https://www.futurecar.com/5088/General-Motors-Cancels-its-In-Person-CES-Events-and-Unveiling-of-the-Electric-Silverado-Pickup-Due-to-Covid-Concerns VCS SAY 2022 IS THE YEAR THE ELECTRIC CAR GOES MAINSTREAM - Venture capitalists watching the electric-car business say that 2022 is when the rubber meets the road. - adoption in the US is lagging, EVs could account for about one-third of light-vehicle sales here by 2030, the industry expert IHS Markit predicted in August. - Whether automakers have electric-vehicle success next year could dictate the trajectory of EV penetration in the US moving forward. Here are three things that VCs say you can expect next year. - It's a golden moment for EVs, said Greg Reichow, partner at Eclipse Ventures in Palo Alto, California. - Customers and investors are awaiting the first deliveries of the electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup, which has nearly 200,000 reservations. Deliveries of the GMC Hummer pickup will continue well into the new year. And reports say the Cadillac Lyriq SUV should reach customers in early 2022. - "Initially, we had large statements about big investments, and there were questions in the market about how serious are people going to take this," said Gabe Cunningham, principal at Fontinalis Partners in Detroit. "It became apparent that those big investments were backed by executives and that they were truly serious about diving into electric vehicles." - Car companies now have to seek out ways to make these far-reaching promises happen. They need to secure the lithium and other rare-earth materials necessary for millions of electric-vehicle batteries. - Despite the mix of electric products expected from both legacy automakers and startups next year, some of the nascent companies could realize they've met their match with their more established competitors — and the reality of an industry with massive overhead costs — said Alexei Andreev, managing director AutoTech Ventures in Menlo Park, California. - The industry has already seen a reckoning as it relates to EV startups. Companies like Faraday Future, Nikola Motors, and Lordstown have experienced troubles, not unlike Tesla did in its early days. Original Source : https://www.businessinsider.com/vcs-2022-electric-car-predictions-ford-lightning-rivian-hummer-2021-12 THE ELECTRIC DELIVERY VAN THAT SAVED CHRISTMAS - Whatever side of the great EV debate you fall on, the benefits of electrified transport to short-haul, multi-drop carriers making 100-plus deliveries per day must be considerable. Zero noise (technically, drivers should turn off their engines when delivering to you, but few do), lower pollution and, from a driver's point of view, ease of operation, with no clutch pedal or gearshift to contend with 1000 times a day. And that's before you factor in the cost of diesel at an all-time high. - Amazon announced it was buying 1800 electric vans from Mercedes-Benz to supplement its European delivery fleet, and in the UK, DPD has just bought 100 new e-vans, taking its electric fleet to 600 vehicles in total. - We've chosen the e-Dispatch from the mid-size van class because of its competitive pricing (starting from £28,250 after the government's £6000 plug-in grant), a one-tonne payload and a class-topping 205-mile WLTP range. - we're unlikely to cover more than 30 miles today making the 80 deliveries we've loaded; even with 100-plus drops, that's unlikely to rise much above 50 miles. And while some drivers will cover up to 70 miles in a day with deliveries further afield, none would be compromised by this van's range on a full charge. - The Citroën e-Dispatch starts at £28,250 for the short-wheelbase XS Enterprise model with a smaller, 50kWh battery, which trades 350mm in load length and some standard equipment, compared with our top-flight medium-wheelbase test van with its 75kWh battery, costing £45,701 after the grant. HOPES ELECTRIC CARS AND NEW BUSINESSES WILL HELP DOUBLE ITS REVENUE "General Motors Co (GM.N) Chief Executive Mary Barra told investors on Wednesday that the automaker plans to double revenue by 2030, expanding profits from combustion vehicles even as it rolls out new electric vehicles and new digitally powered services to catch up with Tesla Inc (TSLA.O)." reported Reuters yesterday: "GM said if it succeeds, annual revenue by 2030 would be about $280 billion, and the automaker would be the leader in U.S. electric vehicle sales. Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson said GM expects pre-tax profit margins of 12 to 14%, which could beat current levels. That would imply annual pre-tax profits of as much as $39 billion. Jacobson said GM can fund $9 billion to $10 billion in annual capital spending for electric vehicles and other initiatives while returning money to shareholders." https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/gm-aims-double-revenues-by-2030-it-drives-pass-tesla-2021-10-06/ "General Motors has been spending billions of dollars in the last few years to electrify its cars and trucks, as it tries to catch up to Tesla. Now the company, which has said it aims to stop selling gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035, is beginning to reveal how big it expects this bet will pay off." reports New York Times: "The automaker said on Wednesday that it aims to roughly double its annual revenue by 2030, to about $280 billion. It is counting on new electric trucks and cars for much of the growth while adding new revenue streams from software and services. While it expects modest growth in sales of gasoline-powered vehicles, electric cars are “a tremendous growth opportunity,” [Mary Barra, GM Chief Exec] said. G.M. also hopes to develop ride-hailing services that use autonomous cars, create insurance products and expand its defense contracting work. Read more: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/06/business/gm-revenue-goals.html# "General Motors laid out its forthcoming EV portfolio at its investor event Wednesday, with the full-size electric pickup Chevrolet Silverado as the centerpiece, as the company seeks to gain market share in the increasingly crowded electric truck market." was the take from TechCrunch: "While GM had previously announced the electric Silverado, the company confirmed some additional details, like that it would feature a fixed-glass roof for certain models and that the vehicle would debut at the trade show CES in January 2022. It's joining Ford's F-150 Lightning and Rivian's R1T in the burgeoning electric truck segment — a segment that until now has been conspicuously empty, despite the truck being one of the best-selling vehicle types in America. GM also announced crossovers from its brands Chevy and Buick, in addition to its upcoming GMC Hummer pickup and Cadillac Lyriq crossover. CEO Mary Barra emphasized that the company will offer affordable EVs — “really affordable EVs for people” — as well as other features to lure some would-be Tesla customers." The automaker announced the new system as a more capable sibling of today's Super Cruise system. While Super Cruise is rated for hands-free driving on mapped, divided highways in the US and Canada, Ultra Cruise takes it further. In addition to highways, GM said it will handle hands-free driving in 95% of all scenarios. We're talking city streets, subdivision streets and even paved rural roads." writes CNET.com: "Ultra Cruise will cover 2 million miles of roads in the US and Canada, but the automaker has quick plans to add another 1.4 million miles' worth of roads. And when this happens, GM plans for a big strategy shift in which vehicles offer either Super Cruise or Ultra Cruise. Cadillac will be the exclusive brand to provide the Ultra Cruise driving experience, while Super Cruise trickles down to more mainstream offerings from GMC, Buick and Chevrolet. With a combination of cameras, radars and lidar onboard to create the Ultra Cruise system, the technology will support everything from parking in your driveway to object avoidance (that's good), on-demand lane changes and left- and right-hand turns." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/gm-ultra-cruise-tesla-full-self-driving-beta-rival/ Today, General Motors announced the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center, an all-new facility that will significantly expand the company's battery technology operations and accelerate development and commercialization of longer range, more affordable electric vehicle batteries. The Wallace Center will be located on the campus of GM's Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. The battery engineering team based at the Wallace Center will experiment with many types of future battery chemistry in addition to lithium-metal, including pure silicon and solid-state, along with different cell form factors. The Wallace Center is expected to build batteries ranging in energy density from 600 to 1200 watt-hours per liter, along with crucial battery cell ingredients like cell active materials. The Wallace Center will be capable of building large-format, prototype lithium-metal battery cells for vehicle usage beyond the small-scale lithium-metal cells typically used in handheld devices or research applications. These cells could be as large as 1,000 mm, nearly twice the size of the initial Ultium pouch cells and will be based on GM's proprietary formula. GMC HUMMER EV IS BUILT TO WOW "The giant, 200.0-kWh battery is a stressed member of the chassis, which is a sort of hybrid between body-on-frame and unibody; there is a frame and a body, but they aren't isolated in the usual body-on-frame manner. Half-shafts are massive ball-spline units, necessary when an independent suspension with more than nine inches of travel is paired with three motors with the combined twist of 1200 pound-feet of torque. With two motors acting on the rear axle, no differential is necessary, but programming can virtually lock the axle so the motors turn each side at the same speed. Up front there is a locking diff for the third motor." writes Car And Driver: "Our on-road drive was limited, but we found a truck that went down the road with the purpose and confidence born of its mass and power. Not many corrections are required to keep it in a highway lane, and not a lot of feedback comes through the steering wheel when you have to turn. But we weren't expecting much in terms of communication from the 305/70R-18 mud-terrain Goodyears. The ride, however, is downright sublime. Adaptive dampers and air springs bridle the mass with authoritative control." Delivery this year. 350 miles for $112,000. That includes about 1,700 sold in the U.S." reports InsideEVs: "About every fourth Volvo sold year-to-date was a plug-in (over 132,000 YTD). The lineup consists of several plug-in hybrids and one all-electric model - Volvo XC40 Recharge, which soon will be joined by the Volvo C40 Recharge. By 2025, Volvo intends to increase the share of BEVs in its global sales volume to 50%, and 100% by 2030." Full battery electrics outperformed, alone taking 15.2% share and a record 32,721 unit volume. Old-school diesel sales fell off a cliff, dropping to under 5% market share in an overall auto market down ~45% in volume from seasonal norms at just over 215,000 units. With an end of quarter push, the Tesla Model 3 was the UK's overall best seller in September." reports Cleantechnica: "Old school combustion powertrains (those without any regen/electric-assist) fell below 50% of the market (48.75%) for the first time since the steam age. Unassisted diesels fell to their lowest point in the modern era, at just 4.95% share, from 14.33% year-on-year, with volume at a pitiful 10,658 units. Tesla Model 3, boosted by Tesla's usual end-of-quarter peak, was the UK's overall best selling vehicle in September, with 6879 registrations." https://cleantechnica.com/2021/10/05/uk-plugin-ev-share-above-20-in-september-tesla-model-3-overall-bestseller/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Returned on Sunday 10th October! Welcome to new PATREON PRODUCER JOHN E AVENSON SUPPLY SHORTAGES GOOD FOR EVS? "Passenger car manufacturers, being offered just a proportion of the critical semiconductors used in their highly modern vehicles – mainly originating from Asia – are having to ration these and are choosing to fit them to their most profitable models." writes Matthias Schmidt: "With tough fleet average EU CO2 emissions targets on the table, car manufacturers are having to balance their 'carbon books' and are increasing PEV sales mixes, with Germany and France both recording new penetration highs in August in order to compensate for those overweight luxobarges, that are as quick to turn heads as they are profits. Volkswagen's multi-brand MEB dedicated fully-electric production line in Zwickau, where CUPRA's Born was the latest model to join the line last month, and the daily production rate trend – presented in an investor relations presentation earlier in September – shows BEVs were not impacted by the chip shortage. This is causing a rising sales mix for their premium-end models and consequently is reflected in the profit margins." On the actual volumes, Matthias reports: "BEVs are now expected to soak up 10.2% (1.132M units) of the total market while with PHEVs added to the equation – a route mostly exploited by premium OEMs – soaking up 9.8% of the total market (1.088M), the report now expects every fifth new passenger car this year to be a plug-in, translating to 2.22 million new vehicles" Read more: https://www.schmidtmatthias.de/post/semiconductor-crisis-accelerates-the-ev-transition GM AIMS TO PROFIT FROM SOFTWARE AS IT BROADENS ITS EV LINEUP "GM plans to position itself as a technology platform company that is as focused on software as it is on making electric vehicles when it meets with investors next week, including revealing a scheduled rollout for at least 20 EVs in the United States over the next several years." reports Autoblog: "GM executives will provide a more detailed look at the company's plans to spend $35 billion through 2025 on EVs and autonomous vehicles, and will give revenue and profit margin growth targets for the five-year period after that, according to people familiar with the plans, who asked not to be identified. GM will reveal greater detail around its planned EV product launches beyond the upcoming GMC Hummer pickup, EV600 delivery van and Cadillac Lyriq crossover. That includes plans for electric versions of GM's Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups in late 2022 and late 2023, respectively, according to the sources as well as an industry forecast provided by AutoForecast Solutions (AFS)." Reuters also said: "When it comes to software, GM will discuss what its offerings allow it to do financially and how that will make the Detroit company's business less cyclical than auto companies have been historically, the sources said. Last week, GM introduced the branding for its software platform, Ultifi - coming in 2023 - and discussed building an App store-like approach to making the platform open for developers. Software-oriented products and services are key to GM and other automakers sustaining profit margins during the transition to connected and electric vehicles, but that will compel companies to build skills and workforces they have lacked in the past. So even though the sports car will be electric, Porsche want the motor to be roughly in the same place where the engine sits in the current Cayman and Boxster models." says InsideEVs: "The goal is to have as much of the vehicle's mass concentrated as close to its center as possible, in order to preserve its handling and agility. They want to make it feel as close to the current model as possible and Autocar points out that the platform that underpins it may also be used in future Audi or Lamborghini sports cars. With the recent Mission R concept shown at IAA 2021, Porsche apparently used a 718 Cayman platform as the base. They then electrified it and gave it the racy, futuristic body that really drew a lot of looks at its debut." CEO Oliver Blume: "When we electrify a model, we won't do a carry-over of the combustion engine [platform] because there are too many compromises. When we are looking to future sports cars, we would develop its own platform but connected with some modules coming from other cars. But the platform will be unique." Hyundai unveiled the Genesis GV60 in a series of videos and announcements featuring wireless charging. In the future, in addition to simplicity and reliability, wireless charging also has the potential to provide Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) power and dynamic charging to power vehicles in motion. And it will be indispensable for autonomous vehicles, providing the ability to refuel without human intervention. The 2021 estimate is $157/kWh on a usable-energy basis (the equivalent of $143/kWh on a rated-energy basis) for production at scale, i.e.,100,000 units per year. That compares to $1,237/kWh on a usable-energy basis in 2008. The decline in cost is a combination of improvements in battery technologies and chemistries, and an increase in manufacturing volume. That being said, Tesla has focused on its microcontrollers which it can produce, something that they have assembled and combined for its vehicles. With these, the company need not source the chips from an external source, and this was something that the vehicle manufacturer has focused on for a long time now." They have lost millions on their bets against Tesla, but until recently, they seemed to be holding on. Now it appears to have changed, as the short interest on Tesla's stock has crumbled to an all-time low. It's a massive change since up to 20% of Tesla's entire float was shorted at some point last year – when it was the most shorted stock on the market – but the short percentage steadily fell over the last 12 months." Bloomberg reports: “The percentage of stock borrowed by traders, a standard measure of short interest, has slumped to 1.1% of Tesla's shares available for trading, according to IHS Markit Ltd. as of last Thursday. That's the lowest since 2010, when the carmaker went public.” Read more: https://electrek.co/2021/10/04/people-are-not-betting-against-tesla-tsla-anymore-short-interest-all-time-low/ TESLA ORDERED TO PAY $137 MILLION TO BLACK WORKER OVER RACIST ABUSE "Tesla, the electric car company founded by billionaire Elon Musk, has been ordered by a court to pay a black former employee $137 million in damages over racist abuse by colleagues." writes the Daily Telegraph "In a legal claim against Tesla he said: "Tesla's progressive image was a facade papering over its regressive, demeaning treatment of African-American employees." Mr Diaz alleged that despite his complaints to supervisors Tesla took no action over the regular racist abuse. A jury in San Francisco awarded $130 million in punitive damages and $6.9 million for emotional distress." Tesla posted a blog, here is an excerpt: "The Tesla of 2015 and 2016 (when Mr. Diaz worked in the Fremont factory) is not the same as the Tesla of today. Since then, Tesla has added an Employee Relations team, dedicated to investigating employee complaints. Tesla has added a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion team dedicated to ensuring that employees have the equal opportunity to excel at Tesla. And Tesla now has a comprehensive Employee Handbook (replacing the Anti-Handbook Handbook) where all of our HR policies, employee protections, and ways to report issues are published in one easy-to-find online document. We acknowledge that we still have work to do to ensure that every employee feels that they can bring their whole self to work at Tesla. And as I posted in July, we will continue to remind everyone who enters the Tesla workplace that any discriminatory slurs – no matter the intent or who is using them – will not be tolerated. Welcome to new PATREON PRODUCER JEREMY WARNER RECORD SHARE FOR WESTERN EUROPEAN EV REGISTRATIONS IN SEPTEMBER "The monthly share of new zero-emission BEV (Battery electric vehicle) passenger car registrations as a percentage of the total new car market achieved a new high in September. 15.3 per cent of all the new passenger cars entering West European roads during the closing month of the third quarter, were pure electric passenger cars, according to exclusive data published each month in Schmidt Automotive Research's in-depth monthly European Electric Car Data Trend Report." Matthias Schmidt writes: "Just under 136 thousand new pure electric cars entered the 18 market West European region monitored by the report each month. Despite volumes falling 30 thousand short of the all-time monthly volume high, recorded in December 2020, as passenger car manufacturers made a last-ditch attempt to meet newly phased-in CO2 fleet emission targets, achieving a 15.1 BEV per cent mix of the total market, the September BEV penetration of the 18-market region saw levels surpass that. A number of reasons impacted the new record in September, namely; the boost from Tesla's end of quarter volumes, achieving a monthly record of 34,000 units, or every fourth BEV – boosted by both the Model Y introduction and shipments from China – as well as the semiconductor situation deflating the total passenger car market." https://www.schmidtmatthias.de/post/western-european-zero-emission-passenger-car-registrations-achieved-a-new-record-share-in-september U.S. SALES UPDATES: ID.4, VOLVO, PORSCHE TAYCAN, MUSTANG MACH-E All from InsideEVs: "Volkswagen ID.4, sales improved slightly from 5,756 in Q2 to 6,049 in Q3, which probably will further increase over the next quarters. The ID.4 share out of the total Volkswagen sales was 7.6%. The company notes that its data indicates that more than two-thirds of ID.4 customers are switching from other brands." "The Volvo Recharge plug-in sub-brand accounted for about 18.2% of the total volume, which is about 1,700 units. In California, the share increased to a record high 52% so the company sells more plug-ins than non-plug-ins there. We estimate that the total plug-in volume in Q3 was 5,960. Volvo's Recharge lineup is currently comprised of a total of seven models, two all-electric (the C40 is coming soon) and five plug-in hybrids. By 2030, all Volvo models wiil become be completely electric. In 2022, the company plans to launch the electric successor of the XC90, based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2), that will be produced in Ridgeville, South Carolina, together with the Polestar 3, also based on the SPA2." "The Taycan/Taycan Cross Turismo (all versions) sales increased marginally, by 0.2% year-over-year to 1,861, far behind the outstanding Q2 result, but enough to remain the third best selling Porsche model. The all-electric Porsche stands for nearly 12.2% of all Porsche sales during the period. The total volume in the Q3 was 5,880. "Mustang Mach-E retail sales expanded 9.2 percent in September. The car comes with 50 kW capability as standard, with a 150 kW unit as an option GM, with its wide ranging product lineup is designing the Ultium modular electric powertrain so that it can underpin both 400 V and 800 V applications. So while most vehicles will initially have 400 V battery packs capable of fast-charging up to 200 kW, the larger truck platform on which the GMC Hummer is built, will support 800 V with a 350 kW fast-charging capability." says Electronics 360: "Another mainstream, high-volume brand already planning to implement the 800 V powernet is Hyundai. The recently announced Ioniq 5, based on the new and dedicated E-GMP EV platform, will have an 800 V architecture that can be charged at 232 kW. Confirming the growing interest in 800 V charging, power electronics suppliers Delphi Technologies and Hitachi have both developed 800 V inverters. The latest EV due to hit the market next year is Citroen's diminutive Ami, which is as long as a standard UK parking space is wide and has a range of just 46 miles." according to thisismoney: "The French maker, having confirmed that it will sell the tiny battery model in Britain from 2022 just a fortnight ago, says it has already taken over 1,000 reservations online. A total of 1,130 pre-orders have been placed on the car company's UK website, which requires a £250 deposit that is refunded if the driver changes their mind. The Ami uses a 5.5kWh battery that recharges in three hours from a conventional domestic socket. This provides a top speed of just 28mph and a claimed range of 46 miles." https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-10056649/Citroen-says-taken-1-000-orders-6-000-Ami-EV.html?utm_source=pocket_mylist VOLVO CARS IS COMPLETING PLANS FOR IPO IN STOCKHOLM "Volvo Cars, the Swedish auto maker owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. of China, is completing plans for an initial public offering and is set to announce details of the listing as early as Monday, in a deal that could value the car maker at as much as $25 billion, according to people familiar with the matter." says WSJ.com: "A listing, if it goes ahead, would represent one of the car industry's most dramatic turnarounds. Ford Motor Co. , weakened by the global financial crisis, sold the Swedish company to Geely for $1.8 billion in 2010." https://www.wsj.com/articles/volvo-cars-is-finalizing-plans-for-ipo-in-stockholm-11633283394 ELECTRIC CAR SALES COULD 'REDUCE ENERGY BILLS' FOR ALL UK CONSUMERS "ELECTRIC car sales could reduce energy bills for everyone across the UK, according to a new report from Ofgem. They have predicted a high number of electric cars could reduce costs for all bill payers, including non EV owners. They said EV's will allow the electricity network to work better which would then reduce average costs." writes the Express: "Ofgem said the market was currently trying to introduce products and services tailored specifically towards electric car owners. These EV tariffs offer cheaper rates overnight to encourage owners to charge their car at off-peak periods. However, they said energy supply was increasingly being bundled in with electric car services." “We believe that high numbers of EVs on the system could reduce total costs of energy for everyone, even non EV owners, particularly if [it] is the norm that EVs charge in ‘off-peak' hours, using smart charging. EV owners are expected to benefit from cheaper running costs of EVs compared to petrol or diesel vehicles, but non-EV owners will also benefit. This is because EVs will enable a better utilisation of the electricity network and generation assets, thereby reducing unit costs.” https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/1500116/electric-cars-sales-energy-bills-savings-ofgem-report-uk GERMANY'S BMVI OPENS TENDER PROCESS FOR NATIONAL FAST-CHARGING NETWORK "Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) opened the tender process for the national fast-charging network: Deutschlandnetz. Companies and company consortia can compete for the bid to set up and operate around 900 fast-charging locations throughout Germany. (Earlier post.)" says Green Car Congres: "The Germany network is intended to ensure the basic supply with fast charging infrastructure in medium and long-haul traffic with around 8,000 additional fast charging points. It complements the already existing large fast-charging locations and thus ensures a nationwide and needs-based fast-charging infrastructure throughout Germany. In a second tender, the construction and operation of around 200 fast-charging locations at unmanaged rest areas on the federal motorways will be tendered. The tendering of the nationwide motorway lots will be carried out in autumn by the Autobahn GmbH." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/10/20211004-bmvi.html HUMMER EV DRIVEN BY TOM MOLOUGHNEY https://insideevs.com/reviews/538170/hummer-ev-first-drive-review/ 80 ACTIVISTS BLOCK SHELL'S PORT TO PROTEST AGAINST ‘GREENWASHING' ADVERTS https://www.euronews.com/green/2021/10/04/climate-ngos-launch-campaign-to-ban-fossil-fuel-adverts-in-the-eu NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Returns on Sunday 10th October! IPCC REPORT SHOWS ‘POSSIBLE LOSS OF ENTIRE COUNTRIES WITHIN THE CENTURY' - Global heating above 1.5C will be “catastrophic” for Pacific island nations and could lead to the loss of entire countries due to sea level rise within the century, experts have warned. - The Pacific has long been seen as the “canary in the coalmine” for the climate crisis, as the region has suffered from king tides, catastrophic cyclones, increasing salinity in water tables making growing crops impossible, sustained droughts, and the loss of low-lying islands to sea level rise. - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published its landmark report on global heating on Monday, which showed that greenhouse gas emissions needed to be halved to limit heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels Original Source : https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/10/ipcc-report-shows-possible-loss-of-entire-countries-within-the-century Seven key takeaways from the IPCC climate change report - 1. Climate change is definitely man-made - 2. The warming is unprecedented - 3. Warming will continue, whatever we do - 4. But it CAN be stopped. Under the IPCC's most optimistic scenario, temperatures would rise but only by about 1.6C above pre-industrial levels and they will then start to fall until they stabilise at around 1.4C above pre-industrial levels. That is based the world hitting net zero emissions - which should mean cutting emissions as much as possible and offsetting the rest - around 2050 - 5. The weather has already changed as a result - 6. The weather will continue to change - 7. Changes to the weather will be worse, if global warming isn't limited to 1.5C Original Source : https://news.sky.com/story/climate-change-seven-key-takeaways-from-the-ipcc-climate-change-report-12377264 ‘Code red' climate report sends oil prices sinking - Oil prices tanked on Monday morning driven by investors selling off holdings after the publication of a landmark report on the damaging effects of climate change signals “code red” for humanity. International benchmarks WTI and Brent Crude plummeted 4.1 per cent and 3.8 per cent respectively. A barrel of either benchmark costs well below $70. - The report did highlight that if nations are able to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions over the next decade, the worst effects of climate change could be avoided, suggesting that reliance on oil to facilitate economic activity will start to ease, causing demand to drop sharply. Oil company shares in London fell along with crude, BP shares were down 2.3 per cent Original Source : https://www.cityam.com/code-red-climate-report-sends-oil-prices-plummeting World leaders, activists react to "sobering" UN climate report - "We can't wait to tackle the climate crisis," President Biden tweeted. "The signs are unmistakable. The science is undeniable. And the cost of inaction keeps mounting." - "Today's report makes for sobering reading, and it is clear that the next decade is going to be pivotal to securing the future of our planet. We know what must be done to limit global warming – consign coal to history and shift to clean energy sources, protect nature and provide climate finance for countries on the frontline," U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement. - "The IPCC report underscores the overwhelming urgency of this moment," U.S. special climate envoy John Kerry added in his own statement. "The world must come together before the ability to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is out of reach." However, it remains to be seen what scope of development the South Korean company will be responsible for. - Volkswagen announced the concept of the unit cell in March. The format of the prismatic cell is always the same, but the cell chemistry is adapted to the respective models or vehicle segments. These cells are to be used in 80 per cent of the VW Group's electric cars. - VW had announced at Power Day that it would build six cell factories in Europe by 2030, each with a production capacity of 40 GWh. It also remains open whether Samsung SDI will become a partner for one of the as yet unconfirmed European battery plants, or will supply the cells from one of its existing plants Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/08/09/samsung-rumoured-to-supply-cells-to-volkswagen/ THE SCIENCE OF SILENCE INSIDE THE ELECTRIC GMC HUMMER - The upcoming all-electric GMC Hummer has employed active sound management that uses digital signals to counteract unpleasant sounds during your drive - audio engineers working in the automotive space use high-tech tuning tools to adjust the sound. - Traditional insulation and bodywork to manage noise adds heft; this technology saves it. - Noise masking works with how your brain perceives sound by introducing another sound at the same time to cover the noise. A source said that Korean manufacturers of EV batteries and other components could benefit from Apple's strategy. - According to the report, Apple has had "advanced meetings" with SK Innovation, a subsidiary of SK Group specializing in EV batteries. The Cupertino company has also met with LG Electronics and auto parts manufacturer Magna International, which both have established a joint venture dubbed LG Magna e-Powertrain. - Apple is said to be considering a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery instead of a lithium-ion battery because the former technology is less likely to overheat and carries safety benefits. In this episode, we open with a very amateur discussion of some very professional boxing. But don't worry! There is more, next up we look into Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, one of the most fun and simultaneously least viable business models we've ever seen. One thing that isn't as up to par as SPCE, is Cathie Wood's ARKX ETF. With holdings like 3D printing, Netflix, and Amazon, we weren't particularly impressed with how relevant the management of this fund was to the name. However, it's not all bad news there were at least a few slightly relevant companies... The next thing we discuss is the Ford F-150 Lightning. How does it hold up against the new GMC Hummer, the Tesla Cybertruck, or even the more fictional Rivian R1T? In our last segment, we look at ETFs and particularly phrase it for beginners. If you're new to investing then this one is for you!

GM ANNOUNCES BIG NEW INVESTMENT IN 'EV ARMS RACE'"General Motors will raise spending on electric and autonomous vehicles and add two U.S. battery factories as it gambles that consumers will eagerly switch from gasoline to the new technology. GM wouldn't give details about where it will build the new plants, but Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson said they would be similar in size to two factories now under construction in Lordstown, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee. Those factories each will employ more than 1,000 workers and cost about $2.3 billion." writes Autoblog: "The new plants were to come later in the decade, but now are expected to be in operation around 2025. They are part of GM's plan to spend $35 billion on electric and autonomous vehicles from 2020 to 2025. The company also said it will switch more U.S. assembly plant capacity to electric vehicles, but gave no details Wednesday." The NY Times said: "G.M. this year introduced an updated version of its electric car, the Chevrolet Bolt, that can travel farther on a full charge and has added to roomier version of the same car. WHY THE F-150 LIGHTNING IS A HUGE SHIFT"The F-150 Lightning, an all-electric version of its popular pickup truck due out in 2022, and it’s aggressively priced for an EV. The base model with 230 miles of range starts at $39,974, while the extended range version starts in the mid-$50,000s and can go about 300 miles." says The Verge: "That puts it right on par, price-wise, with Tesla’s Cybertruck and far below more luxury-minded options like Rivian’s R1T or General Motors’ exorbitant GMC Hummer pickup. And since Ford’s vehicles are still eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit, that price tag can essentially come down even more for early buyers. the F-150 Lightning is by far the most familiar-looking of the electric pickups announced to date. And Ford is betting big that this unchallenging boxy design — which Elon Musk poked fun at during the Cybertruck announcement in 2019 — will pay off." https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/19/22442777/ford-f-150-lightning-electric-truck-specs-price FORD F-150 PRICE AND SPECS"There are two undisclosed battery versions: Standard-Range and Extended-Range that are expected to have a range of 230 miles (370 km) and 300 miles (483 km) respectively. We guess that the battery capacity stands at 115 kWh net/125 kWh total and 155 kWh net/170 kWh total, respectively." says InsideEVs: "The mid-series XLT trim will start at $52,974 MSRP, while the top of the line trim is up to over $90,000. We don't know the price of the Extended-Range Battery version yet. The detailed pricing will be released in Fall 2021. The battery cells for the electric F-150 are supplied from SK Innovation's battery plants in Commerce, Georgia (Ford will additionally form a JV with SK Innovation in the future). According to SK Innovation, the cells are the world’s first high-density “Nickel 9” (battery that has 90% nickel content in the cathode)" Ford F-150 Extended Range Specs: EPA range of up to 300 miles (483 km) 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h): "mid-4-second range" top speed: undisclosed dual motor all-wheel drive DC fast charging: up to 150 kW payload of up to 1,800-pound (816 kg) Cargo box volume 52.8 cubic feet Front trunk volume: 14.1 cubic feet (400 liters) and 400 pounds (181 kg) of payload towing capacity up to 10,000-pound (4,536 kg) Pro Power Onboard (option): 9.6 kW power export with ten 120V outlets plus one 240V outlet(Two in the cab, four in the bed and four in the front trunk, plus a 240V outlet in the bed) Intelligent Backup Power capability (standard): 9.6 kW https://insideevs.com/news/508686/ford-f150-lightning-specs-prices/ THE FORD F-150 LIGHTNING IS THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE OF DYSTOPIA"It will be the first electric vehicle, the company says, to serve as a “battery on wheels.” Ford says the extended battery in the more expensive version of the electric F-150 will be able to power a blacked-out home for three days. Potential users will likely have to pay to install a home integration system, price to be determined. During the rollout event, CEO Jim Farley cited recent ice storms in Texas, which have been blamed in part on climate change and which stunted the state's electric grid for five days, as a reason to pony up for the Lightning." says Wired: "Being able to pump 9.6 Kw of power into your home is what Costa Samaras, a professor who studies energy policy at Carnegie Mellon, calls “an add-on.” “It’s a luxury that someone might use once every two years,” he says. But the vehicle’s ability to power homes, as well as tools, might be the sort of feature that will attract even the previously EV-incurious, he says. Americans might not be interested in buying products for climate resilience per se. But demand for in-home generators in Texas has reached an all-time high since the February ice storms." https://www.wired.com/story/ford-lightning-f150-electric-vehicle-dystopia/ F-150 LIGHTNING'S RANGE WHEN TOWING"Although the Lightning is aided by the aerodynamic effects of its flat underbody, when running at real highway speeds there's no tricking the air molecules, and a bluff truck is going to suffer. In our highway range testing, which we conduct at a steady 75 mph, we typically see a range number that's about 20 percent below the EPA figure. Using that same bogey, which is probably generous in the case of a full-size pickup, would put the Lightning in the 180-to-240-mile zone for what you might achieve on a road trip." says Car & Driver: "Towing anywhere near the 10,000-pound maximum rating on XLT and Lariat models (with the maximum trailer tow package and extended-range battery) at highway speeds, we believe you'd be hard pressed to exceed double-digit miles. We'd take that bet, in fact. At least there's some smart technology to help adjust the range prediction shown to the driver in day-to-day use. As launched on the 2021 F-150, the Lightning uses a height sensor at each corner to estimate the load in the bed or on the trailer hitch and preemptively adjusts down the range predictions accordingly." https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36481590/ford-f150-lightning-range-towing/ FORD CEO: ELECTRIC VEHICLE DEMAND WILL TRANSFORM INDUSTRY"Jim Farley, the company’s new CEO, calls the introduction of an electric version of the nation’s top-selling vehicle a watershed moment for Ford as well as for the auto industry" according to AP who spoke to him Q: How long do you think it will be until the majority of vehicles you sell are battery electric? A: A lot of it will depend on government support, the infrastructure (charging stations) build-out, as well as a support for the purchase. We have a $7,500 benefit still at Ford. So it depends on what happens with government policy, and whether that tips the scale for a lot of customers. It has in Europe. China is moving fast. We’re totally sold out with the Mach E (Electric SUV). On the West Coast, it’s already changed quickly. It’ll be a matter of time before that sweeps across the country https://apnews.com/article/technology-electric-vehicles-business-718598a7dea7decc1791c946bae2616a FRUNKING FANTASTIC STORAGE"With more and more electric vehicles entering the market, and fewer engine bays needing to hold engines, frunks are here to stay, and we can quickly see them becoming competitive battlegrounds. And the new Ford F-150 Lightning has one." says Motortrend: "The F-150 Lightning comes only in four-door SuperCrew configuration with a 5.5-foot bed. But up front, in the nose where a large internal combustion engine would normally reside, there is a large and deep cargo hold offering 14.1 cubic feet of space. The frunk locks with the rest of the vehicle. It can be opened any one of six ways: using the key fob, pressing the button under the frunk lid, pushing the button inside the cab, tapping the 15.5-inch touchscreen, using the keypad on the door, or through the FordPass app on your smartphone. The cool blacked-out chrome grille is attached to the hood and they open as a single piece (again, like a trunk lid facing forward). There are LED lights embedded on the underside of the grille (which look curiously like the headlights on the new Rivian R1T pickup, albeit pointed into the F-150 instead of out... ) that throw light down into the cargo area. How far the hood raises is adjustable." https://www.motortrend.com/news/2022-ford-f-150-lightning-ev-frunk-trunk-details/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What’s the best specialist vehicle you can think of which would make a great EV? Men ändå. Slutligen rundar vi av med tankar kring dörr-ljud. Häng med!
