Mercedes-AMG GLC 43: Fighting Old Maine Winter in Performance Style

America on the Road

A performance crossover might not be everyone's can of Red Bull. Some might suggest a performance CUV is akin to the world's tallest midget, but this week co-host Chris Teague took the wheel of the hot-to-trot AMG GLC 43 in the teeth of yet another frigid Maine winter, and he's ready to report on his finding in this edition on of America on the Road. Meanwhile, the figurative elephant in the room is the arrival of 47th President Donald Trump and his sweeping executive orders that include a radical — and some might add welcome — change in America's automotive emissions and fuel economy regulations. With the stroke of a Sharpie, the once-and-current President rescinded rules that essentially forced carmakers to build and, more importantly, sell electric vehicles. The result of this and the new Administration's accompanying energy policy promise to significantly change how the auto industry operates and — more importantly — what you'll be able to buy. We'll have the details. We'll also have an exclusive interview with Dodge Brand CEO Matt McAlrear, just as his brand is introducing its first battery-electric vehicle, the 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona. Host Jack Nerad recently talked with McAlear at length about the future of the beloved Dodge brand, and we'll have that discussion for you. Jack Nerad's road test this week examines the Mazda CX-70 PHEV, its latest crossover SUV entrant, this one in plug-in hybrid form. The vehicle bears striking similarities to the well-regarded Mazda CX-90, and Nerad will break down the pluses and minuses in his report. In the news, Chevrolet has announced a recall of its recently launched Equinox EV, and we'll have the details on that. The widespread fires near Los Angeles have had a devastating effect on the collector car hobby, too. We'll tell you all about that, too, soon. Listener Question of the Week "How can I tell if my car needs a new battery or just a charge?" While the guys are thawing out from an icy cold winter season, they're eager to talk about some of the hotest new cars on the market. Benjamin starts this week off with a review of the 2025 BMW M5, a car that's heavier and more powerful than the vehicle it replaces, but now picks up a fancy plug-in hybrid powertrain that can pre-gear for more impressive launches using all 700+ of its horsepower. Benjamin is eager to describe just how special this new M5 is, but wonders who is this vehicle for, what with its varying goals and innovations. Sami suggests it's a car that can do it all, but is there a customer out there looking for what the BMW offers or should they opt for something else? Then Sami talks about his time in two new, but very similar Mazdas. The 2025 Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 are offered with the same powertrains, either a turbo six cylinder model or a plug-in hybrid, and both use the same platform, but are available in either a two or three-row setup. However, Sami points out that the five-seater CX-70 feels like a lackluster effort, and the automaker has a lot of other low points too, including the plug-in powertrain and cumbersome infotainment system. Is this the best Mazda can do? Then the guys riff on a listener question before closing it up for the week. Thanks for listening!

One last episode of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast to enjoy before the new year! This time Sami and Benjamin take a look at the hybrid, all-wheel-drive sedans in the Toyota lineup, starting with Sami's review of the 2025 Toyota Camry XSE AWD. Now exclusively available as a hybrid, this Camry has a whole new look and powertrain, but how does it compare to the Honda Accord Hybrid the guys talked about last week? And why does Sami feel a strange tapping in his back every time he stops? Then Benjamin brings up the smaller, more affordable 2025 Toyota Corolla Hybrid AWD, which delivers solid fuel efficiency, but is lacking other positive distinguishing factors, especially compared to other options in this segment. He also chimes in with some impressions about the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV. Finally the guys answer some listener questions about Chinese automakers taking over certain markets. General Motors (GM) just released their results for the third quarter of 2024, and they tell a story of a remarkable turnaround in their EV business. But is this turnaround a sign of things to come? Have they got all those production issues in the rear-view mirror? Or will GM continue to struggle to eat into Tesla's dominance. After many years of promising to bring compelling EVs to market, for so long GM's EV volumes were driven almost entirely by the Bolt and latterly the Bolt EUV. Those were cars built on ageing technology and had to prop up GM whilst they developed their Ultium Cells partnership with LG. That project saw plenty of investment, but it stumbled and stalled as the production ramp-up was plagued by teething problems.  On today's podcast we'll:  Record-Breaking Sales Figures: Explore how GM achieved a 60% surge in electric vehicle sales, reaching a new record Market Share Gains: Understand GM's strategies and the growing consumer acceptance of its electric offerings. Diverse EV Portfolio: Remind you about GM's range of electric vehicles that cater to a variety of preferences, including standout models like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Cadillac Lyriq. Future Plans for Electrification: Talk about GM's ambitious plans for expanding its EV lineup, including upcoming models and investments that aim to capture a larger segment of the market. Challenges and Opportunities Ahead: And finally get some insight into the challenges GM faces in the competitive electric vehicle landscape, as well as the opportunities that could drive future growth.

Testing 2 New Electric SUVs: 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, 2024 Genesis Electrified GV70

America on the Road

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 27, 2024 43:34

The all-new 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV and the recently renewed 2024 Genesis Electrified GV70 represent two different approaches to solving the electric vehicle puzzle. The Equinox EV is built on the General Motors Ultium dedicated battery-electric vehicle platform, while the Electrified GV70 leverages the conventionally powered GV70 body, chassis, and interior. Each approach has its pluses and minuses, and executives in those two companies to tell you. What our two test vehicles suggest is that the two paths lead to the same destination. Though they are similar in size, the Equinox EV and Electrified GV70 are not head-to-head competitors. As one of the battery-electric touchstones of GM's lowest-priced brand, the Equinox EV has been touted as a vehicle that will bring affordable electric vehicles to the masses. Co-Host Chris Teague, who road-tested the Equinox EV, and Host Jack Nerad will discuss how well the new Chevy accomplishes that task. The Genesis GV70 has a different mission — to bring electric propulsion to the increasingly popular and increasingly competitive small luxury crossover class. Those woods are currently filling up with EVs, many of them struggling to find willing buyers. Do the GV70's handsome looks and 3.8-second 0-60 acceleration give it the push it needs to break through in the marketplace. Nerad, who road-tested the GV70, and Teague will bat that issue around in this episode. While we are on the subject of luxury vehicles, our special guest this week is Lexus's Cynthia Tenhouse, who serves as vice president of the Lexus Guest Experience. Toyota's luxury marque has proceeded very slowly in introducing battery-electric vehicles to its lineup even as virtually all of its luxury-brand competitors have charged ahead. We'll discuss the brand's wait-and-see strategy and many other topics with her in a wide-ranging discussion about the current state of the luxury vehicle market. You'll want to hear what she has to say. In the news, two prominent American electric carmakers are in the midst of a dust-up in court. We'll tell you who Tesla's Elon Musk is suing and what's likely to happen next. Beyond that court battle, Musk also angling to become a strong competitor to Waymo in the robotaxi wars that are set to develop in several cities around the country in the coming months. And Waymo is taking a special jab at Tesla as just one skirmish in what promises to be an epic battle. A new survey reveals that enthusiasm for driving and collector cars isn't dying, as some would have you believe. Instead, the Hagerty-sponsored survey reveals that Americans' love for automobiles remains strong across several generations. There is also tragedy in Chicago, as an iconic vehicle is involved in a major crash. We'll have the details on that and so much more in this episode of America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

Shoot us a Text. It's Monday and that means we GET to work in automotive retail. Today we're talking about GM's adjusted EV plans, BP's investment into EV charging and what it means to be “luxury.”Show Notes with linksGeneral Motors is gearing up to launch a series of new electric vehicles across its Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac brands this year, aiming to capture a broader market despite current sales challenges.Although EV sales growth has slowed due to high prices and charging concerns, GM still aims for zero-emission light-duty vehicles by 2035.GM has already cut EV production targets by up to 50,000 units this year. The Chevrolet Equinox EV is expected in all trims this year, and is set to be GM's most affordable electric vehicle. MSRP will start at around $35,000, including shipping before the $7,500 federal tax credit.Looking ahead, GM will introduce the new-look Chevy Bolt in 2025 and plug-in hybrids in 2027.GM's Mary Barra said "I think we all know that the growth of EVs has slowed. We never expected it to be linear."BP is partnering with Simon Property Group to install 900 electric vehicle (EV) chargers at various locations as a part of BP's broader strategy to expand its EV charging network and support the increasing demand for electric vehicles.Last year, BP Pulse made plans to invest $1 billion in America's EV infrastructure by the end of the decade.BP Pulse has more than 33,900 EV charge points globally, the company said, and plans to have 100,000 points by 2030.This initiative supports BP's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions.Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks are also teaming up to install fast electric vehicle chargers at 100 coffee-slinging locations on Interstate 5, which runs along the West Coast from Canada to Mexico. These new stations will be part of the German automaker's $1 billion plan to build 2,000 new EV charging hubs across the globe.A recent Morning Consult Intelligence brand tracker study highlights shifting priorities among luxury shoppers, with over 75% saying quality is more important than cost in luxury retail.65% of consumers value exclusive access to products as part of their luxury shopping experience, and 64% believe that high price is an important aspect of luxury.Superior customer service is crucial, with 72% citing it as a key expectation and 63% expect personalized shopping services as part of their experience. In travel, luxury is defined by comfort; in food and beverages, it's fresh, rare ingredients. Most luxury purchases are still made in brick-and-mortar stores, including secondhand items.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Welcome to the best month on the calendar as we give a spirited UAW strike update, peruse the list of new vehicles over the next 18 months, and review the very first show at the site of the NADA Show opening party at the Las Vegas Sphere.Weekend tensions were rising between the UAW and the Detroit 3 as 7000 additional workers went on strike. Ford CEO Jim Farley alleges the union is holding automakers "hostage" with unreasonable demands, stating, "A bad deal would threaten midsize or expensive larger vehicles." and that if the goal was a historic contract, that was already on the table. UAW President Shawn Fain countered by accusing Farley of "lying about the state of negotiations." Fain emphasized, "Bargaining's always a two-way street," and criticized the companies for frequently shifting their stance. The dispute has now engaged approximately 25,000 workers. Nyle Maxwell, owner of four Stellantis stores and chairman of the Stellantis National Dealer Council, voiced concerns about the ongoing strike's impact on inventory and the supply chain. He's been stockpiling fast moving parts and highlighted the potential crunch on Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator inventory. Maxwell emphasized, "any additional strike targets are just going to cripple the entire supply chain." He urges "more strategic thinking and less bluster."Flashback to 2017: Automotive News released its first annual Future Product Pipeline listing all plug-in vehicles headed to market. The Chevrolet Bolt was a fresh face and Elon Musk was touted as a champion of a progressive audience as he announced his ambitious promise of a $35,000 Tesla Model 3 made headlines. It's unknown if this is closer to a Blazer EV or a Chevrolet Equinox EV - or maybe neither - as there is no official announcement. Popular Now: Red Dead Redemption franchise sales break 70 million The vehicle could be riding on 20"" wheels wrapped with Michelin e-Primacy tires - and features a tri-bar third brake light. Most likely, the vehicle will run using the GM Ultium EV platform, centered around a flexible battery architecture. GM promotes Ultium as a robust technology with cells that can support vehicles of all shapes and sizes - with the cells stored vertically for SUVs, trucks, and crossovers, or horizontally-stacked cells for cars high performance-vehicles. 3 Buick invites auto fans to ""dream with us"" as the automaker prepares for an electric future: Buick expects to have a fully-electric future by 2030, which fits with GM's effort towards a zero-emission, all-electric product lineup in the future. To help Buick move forward, GM filed trademarks earlier this year for Electra E1 through E9, as the company apparently plans a full range of Buick EV models at some point later down the road. Expect a handful of different Buick EVs to be unveiled with the Electra moniker for all the auto brand's electric efforts. A Buick EV crossover was spotted during road testing in China last month, and this prototype seems to be the same - with wheel design and other features appearing identical.
