516. The Seven Commitments That Forge Elite Teams

Successful teams don't just happen. In this week's episode of The Unbeatable Mind, Mark is going solo (with his daughter Catherine joining for an insightful Q & A), to break down his acclaimed “seven commitments” model for building elite teams.    Drawing from his extensive Navy SEAL experience, Mark dives into the principles of courage, trust, respect, growth, resilience, excellence, and alignment. He explores why true elite teams aren't about being better people, but by fostering intentional behaviours and growth.    Mark discusses how resistance to change can be a common pitfall in the building of strong teams, and the power of collective development not only in work, but in life. In order to achieve growth as a collective, honest communication and respect are paramount.    Key Takeaways:  The Fundamentality of Courage: Listen as Mark draws on personal experience from the SEALs, to illustrate how true courage within teams isn't about bravado, but humility.    Growth Is Non-Negotiable: Realize that for a team to truly become elite, it requires constant growth from every member. When personal growth slows, so does the growth of the collective.    The Role of Physical Health in Teams: Discover how the most successful teams are ones that recognize their body and mind as one integrated system. Physical performance affects mental performance as individuals and collectively.    Resistance To Change: Recognize how even though resistance to change is completely normal, for those on a path of true growth, it's ultimately futile.    Mark Divine, Ph.D., is the host of The Mark Divine Show, a solo podcast focused on developing mental toughness, emotional resilience, and intuitive leadership. A Navy SEAL veteran and leadership expert, Mark graduated as Honor Man of SEAL BUD/S class 170 and served 20 years in the SEAL teams, retiring as Commander in 2011. He is also the founder of SEALFIT and Unbeatable Mind, programs designed to enhance physical, mental, and emotional performance. Mark holds a Ph.D. in Global Leadership and Change and has practiced Zen meditation and breathwork for over 30 years. His unique approach to leadership blends holistic, whole-person development with a focus on unlocking human potential. He has authored several bestselling books, including Unbeatable Mind and The Way of the SEAL. Mark lives in Encinitas, CA, with his wife, Sandy, their children, spirited grandchildren, and dogs, and is driven by a mission to inspire 100 million people to develop greater mental toughness, intuition, and compassion.   Mark's Links:  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markdivine/   Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@markdivineshow  Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/RealMarkDivine/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sealfit/?hl=en https://www.instagram.com/markdivineleadership/    Sponsors and Promotions: Qualia:   To feel in your prime WAY longer than you ever thought possible, try Qualia Senolytic up to 50% off right now at qualialife.com/divine15, and code DIVINE15 at checkout for an extra 15% off.

The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, Chris Whitlock and Frank Strickland discuss the importance of AI Education for Leaders. Drawing upon three decades of leading hundreds of advanced analytics and AI programs and projects in government and industry, Chris and Frank address the primary variable in the talent deficit – large numbers of qualified AI leaders. Whether you are a senior or mid-level leader who lacks hands-on experience with AI, or an AI practitioner who lacks leadership experience, Frank and Chris unpack the dynamics between AI programs, projects, people, and technology.  Research Questions:  Chris Whitlock suggests a question related to Large Language Models (LLM); how will LLMs perform with contemporary data feeds, novel, emergent topics? For example: intelligence summarizations? Frank Strickland believes that simulation technologies are ascendant and should be studied more. During his 22 years of government service, he helped lead innovations including: evaluating and transitioning to production the nation's first long endurance unmanned aerial system; delivering intelligence to the tactical edge using narrow and wide-band technologies; and agile prototyping of big data analytics. The Director of Central Intelligence awarded him the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement in recognition of these accomplishments. He was the National Reconnaissance Office's (NRO) Legislative Director, and a member of CIA's Senior Intelligence Service, where he received the NRO's Medals of Distinguished and Superior Service. In the private sector he co-founded Edge Consulting and helped lead Edge's growth resulting in an acquisition by IBM. As a partner in IBM and subsequently Deloitte, he led large practices providing AI and analytics solutions and services to national security clients including innovations in massive scale property graphs and agent-based simulation.  Chris Whitlock completed undergrad in Oxford – Oxford MS – and began service as an Army infantry officer, then military analyst at CIA. He spent the majority of his 40-year career providing advanced analytics, AI, and management consulting services primarily to national security clients in the Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, and Department of State. He helped pioneer the rapid prototyping and integration of advanced algorithms with software applications starting in the early 1990s. In the past 10 years his work has emphasized machine learning and artificial intelligence applications. He led a large market offering in Deloitte Consulting focused on Mission Analytics and AI in addition to leading large programs for cabinet level departments. He co-founded an analytics company, Edge Consulting, personally leading the development of algorithmic approaches to quantify the value of intelligence. After an acquisition by IBM, he served as a Partner in IBM. If you notice parallels between Frank's and his careers, we are twins who were separated at birth. We found each other in 1991 and have done some cool stuff since including our most recent venture, aiLeaders. Mental discipline, focus, motivation, and desire men face with their Physical Mountain. What bubbles up emotionally for men once they have a good footing on the Physical Mountain. Why we first start with the physical training in order to help get the body get in balance. The power of training the mental, physical, and emotional factors at the same time with a team. Key differences and benefits of training with a team compared to on your own. Why the individual way of being that we have been taught as Westerners in the USA is not beneficial and we need community.   [46:30] Transitioning From “Me” to “We” in Your Wellness Tribe What ethnocentrism is and how it helps you put the needs of your team before your own plus why we are comfortable with this in a family setting but not others. Why it's vital to meet your needs first before those of your teammates as a way of cultivating emotional intelligence. Unpacking the emotional baggage we carry in the subconscious mind. What you should look for in your wellness tribe to help you transition into more of a “We” than an “I.” Why team practices aren't just part of the military, athletics, and families but also in business and work. The best times to be an oak and strong vs a reed in the ocean and roll with the punches while still be able to stand back up. Mark's experience working with the most mentally tough men who were also able to tap into their emotions. How Mark learned to open up and explore his emotions after so many years of shutting them down during his childhood.   [54:00] Clearing Up vs Opening Up Your Emotions Ken Wilber The differences between “clearing up” and “opening up” our emotions and energy. How to acknowledge and lean into the pain and suffering but don't stop your physical training or rituals like breathwork and journaling. What it means to live a life well lived by committing to your own evolution and doing the best that you can.   [1:01:30] Healing Generational Patterns & Bad Karma Training the flow state to help you avoid monkey thoughts like, “I'm not good enough. I'm not smart enough.” 366 Mark Wolynn Exploring generational trauma origins and Mark's belief that we are born with karma that we need to resolve during our lifetimes. How you can resolve all of your past karma and generational trauma and patterns but it requires commitment to your training. Why the emotional component of meditation was missing when it was brought to Western society. How to begin removing the things, people, and obligations that are no longer serving you. The fact that pain and suffering is part of the experience of our spiritual selves having a physical experience while alive.   [1:07:00] Building Consistent Wellness Practices How physical training has become something that Mark loves to do and so it is a big part of his day-to-day life compared to what other people might do to also get the benefits of physical exercise. Why the mental and emotional parts of being actually don't take up a lot of time; you can take 20 minutes in the morning for breathing, meditation, and visualization each day. The incredible benefits of doing a little bit of wellness practices every day instead of doing something like 5 hours of it straight on a Saturday. People with Neurodiversity features may spend a lot of time trying to adjust to their work environment. They may need to manage their social impressions or find ways to block out distractions.   [1:11:30] Letting Go of Shame & Other Low Energy Vibrations Letting Go by David R. Hawkins Exploring the different levels of emotions and why the lowest vibration begins with shame. Why shame is what is making the most money in marketing and is keeping people in jail mentally and spiritually. How shame is driving the division we see in society as far as different political views and being a “good boy or good girl” with lockdown and face mask protocols. Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior by David R. Hawkins The Eye of the I: From Which Nothing is Hidden by David R. Hawkins How to tap into low vibrations such as shame with the tools of shadow work and deep mind-body work. The fact that we have so much shame in our Western culture but there is a lot of positive aspects we should feel honored about as well such as courage. What you can do to stop feeding the “wolf of fear” and begin feeding the “wolf of courage.” The power acts of acceptance and forgiveness which are at some of the highest levels of vibration behind love. Why change happens when we begin to focus on shifting our mindset and consciousness but only if we are spending our attention wisely. How corporations and governments know how to keep the population in fear so that they can have control of them. Neurodiversity refers to variation in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood and other mental functions in a non-pathological sense   [1:15:00] Witnessing Society's Positive Global Wellness Shift What gifts COVID-19 has brought our relationships, personal development journeys, and businesses. Why so many people are facing dark thoughts about the future because they haven't yet trained the mind for a positive shift. The fact that Mark is seeing more and more people in their 40s and up really taking charge of their health and spirituality. How younger generations are being raised by higher conscious parents and that is positively impacting life around us. The positive tipping point he believes we will experience between 2030 and 2040 after all of our collective work to heal and cultivate greater consciousness for humanity. When that day is over, it's like a metaphorical death. You're done with that day but you could be done with your life so go be happy. The only way to know that you had a life well lived is to commit to your evolution and to do the best you can every day. The more nuanced you become with your practice, it becomes every minute and then every second. Then it becomes every moment to moment... ...You become so present and so aware that every thought and emotion that comes up, every experience you have, every interaction you have is an opportunity ask, 'How can I use this moment to evolve and serve?' so that it becomes part of your everyday awareness and perpetual flow state." - Mark Divine   The Five Mountains of Wellness   "Wellness is a journey, not a destination. It is easy for people to fall off of the path when they hit those major obstacles and this is when the other mountains, Spiritual and Intuitional, come into play with the Physical, Mental, and Emotional. Acknowledge what is blocking you, lean into it but don't stop your other training. Keep going to the gym, journaling, eating healthy, and doing your box breathing practice. If you fall off your rituals, just get back on and continue the work." - Mark Divine   The Training of Unbeatable Mind     "The training of Unbeatable Mind is really powerful because when we train ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally, what we're doing is working to connect and integrate all those physical aspects of the mind: the brain-brain, the heart-brain, the belly-brain, and the body-brain. Then we're also working simultaneously to expand our perceptions so that we begin to experience the mind independent of the body as well. Those are the first 3 of the 5 Mountains." - Mark Divine     Links From Today's Show  086 Creating The Unbeatable Mind With Mark Divine Sealfit Unbeatable Mind Mark Divine's Books Unbeatable Mind Podcast with Mark Divine Mark Divine Instagram | Morning Rituals, Courage, Facing Fears, Witnessing and Relationships A DEEPER WHY Josh Trent's Journey Thru SEALFIT 20X-12 Hr. This episode of The Idealcast features the second part of Gene Kim’s interview with Team of Teams coauthor and CrossLead CEO David Silverman and CrossLead Head of R&D Jessica Reif.  In this episode, they take up the topic of how internal marketplaces are structures that can connect mid-level leaders to each other, helping allocate scarce resources to where they're needed most, which enables the further unlocking of capacities. They discuss challenges around the cost of change and the new skills that mid-level leaders need in order to survive and thrive in an era where being functionally excellent in one’s own silo is not enough. They further talk about the similarities between special operations and agile, especially comparing and contrasting terms that further concretize concepts the agile and DevOps community have held for years but struggled to name. And finally, they discuss where we go from here. In a continuation of Episode 11, the Team of Teams coauthor and CEO of CrossLead talks about the key concepts from Team of Teams, and provides even more context for so many of the topics covered in last week’s episode.    David talks about the genesis of the joint special operations command, which was created after the failure of the daring Iran hostage rescue in 1979, and how it found itself in 2003 in Afghanistan and Iraq, tactically winning but strategically losing, unable to find terrorist leaders of Al Qaeda in Iraq. He describes the principles that they drew upon, which will be familiar to almost everyone in the DevOps community, the practices that it led to, the amazing outcomes that resulted, as well as the leadership skills needed in this new world.  BIO: David Silverman Entrepreneur, bestselling author, and former Navy SEAL, David Silverman is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of CrossLead, Inc. Are you looking for a BLUEPRINT on how to develop an UNBEATABLE MINDSET?    Then this episode is a MUST LISTEN!    My guest today is none other than Mark Divine — a New York Times best-selling author, leadership expert, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and retired U.S. Navy SEAL Commander. He is also the founder and CEO of SEALFIT and Unbeatable Mind and hosts the highly-rated weekly podcast, The Unbeatable Mind with Mark Divine.   Mark's story is incredibly inspiring because he not only made it through BUD/S, at 26 he graduated as the Honor Man (#1-ranked) of class 170. Perhaps even more striking was that his entire original boat crew graduated with him that day. The odds of that happening by chance are literally one in a million.   Mark then served for twenty years (9 active duty and 11 reserves) leading his team on reconnaissance, training and classified missions in 45 different countries throughout Asia and the Middle East.   He now shares the same secrets to entrepreneurs, executives and teams through his books, speaking, award winning podcast, and world-renowned leadership and team events.   Get ready to have your mind blown with the facts that Mark and I will be discussing about his story, meditation, human experiences, mindfulness, discipline and how to develop an unshakeable mindset.   Quick overview on Mark Divine's story:   After college, Mark was a typical guy trying to make a lot of money and make a mark in the world. He got his MBA at Stern School of Business, he was a Certified Public Accountant working toward shifting over to becoming an investment bank or trader or hedge fund guy.   Just like others, Mark had an early life crisis. He had that kind of existential experience of “What the eff am I doing in this corporate world in the suit and tie, chasing money when none of that really means anything to me?”    And his paradigm was meditation. He was very fortunate. It's incredible for him.    When he looks back, he was introduced to Zen meditation at 20 years old, through his martial arts teacher, which was literally the month or two after he went to New York City from Colgate to start his professional career. Because his teacher was so serious about the value of Zen training, to complement the martial arts training and Yin and Yang, his teacher had them meditate for five minutes before and five minutes after every class. And they had a Zen class for 45 minutes on Thursday nights. A small group of them were really dedicated to that. And then they used to go to the Zen Mountain Monastery in Woodstock, New York for long weekends to sit with Zen monks. And Mark felt so good after a few months of wrestling. It just calmed his mind, and he started to feel really good. And so he decided to commit to a daily practice every morning. And it's never wavered since then even while he was in the SEALs. So every morning I would sit, meditate for 20 minutes, I had these profound shifts.   Then, as a 20 to 23 year old kid, his brain was still really developing fast. So the fact that he was meditating meant that he was affecting how his brain was developing. The outcome of that was for him to have those really, really cool moments of just great clarity and insight at a young age where he could see that he was on the wrong path. He sees that the stories that he had been kind of fed through my family, the way they dialogue through the culture, through everything were leading him down a common path, but it just wasn't his path. It wasn't who marked what's meant to be for him.    So when he started asking questions to his higher self or spirit, he started to get answers about what he's supposed to be doing or who he is. And it was leading him in the message that he was a warrior, he was meant to be a warrior, he was meant to serve and lead others, and do some grizzly warrior things. He hadn't even heard of the SEALs at that time. But that insight that he was meant to be a warrior is what led him to stumble across the Navy recruiting office. That's where Mark learned about the SEALs because he saw a poster there with guys doing cool SEAL things on it. And that just cracked right open. He was like, “That's it right there!”    That was a synchronicity moment. Mark knew that was it.   So in November of 1989. He got his MBA in the mail. Because he had to go extra, he went an extra year to finish it because he was doing night school. He got an MBA certificate, and got his Certified Public Accountant certificate. He earned my first degree black belt. And then he was on a bus to Officer Candidate School in the Navy.   And the lesson that he learned was: “Follow your passion and purpose, or else you're gonna be miserable.”   What does Mark love most about living on the beach?   One of the main practices of being in nature itself is a spiritual practice, because we really just start to resonate and vibrate at the level of the earth, which is the alpha state.   Mark gets that experience -- being in the water and having ionization on the water and the grounding effect. And the ocean effect immediately puts him in that alpha state.   When he meditates, he has both open and closed meditation practices. The open eye meditation practice is done with a wide angle vision or broad gaze.   Left Brain vs. Right Brain   The left brain is trained and refined the egoic structures of the brain and the concentration power of the mind is trained with a focused gaze.   The right brain is really about context, pattern recognition, spontaneity, and those types of things.   Learn more about these as Mark explains its roles in a person's meditation process!   What are some of the top tactics that Mark learned that the everyday listener can adapt to develop the unbeatable mindset?   Every individual must be in service to something bigger than themselves.   In order to serve well, you've got to relentlessly train yourself to evolve yourself to become your best version physically, mentally, emotionally, intuitively, and spiritually, so that you can serve powerfully starting with serving your family.   A training is a thoughtful, disciplined approach to training the whole body, mind, and spirit system. The whole person along those five mountains that I address — physical, mental, emotional, intuitional and spiritual. So in order to do that, we're going to exercise, move things, move weight, move our bodies, move energy. And we need to do it with the right mindset, the right attitude, the right breath, posture, and breathing skills, the effective use of energy management, both to accrue energy and to prevent energy from leaving us unawares, and to recover effectively.    We always know why we're training and what specifically we're trying to focus on or improve if we have a gap. And we elevate this training to the same level of importance as eating and sleeping, so that you don't ever miss it.   How was Mark able to calm himself spiritually, mentally, and emotionally during times of adversity?   For Mark, it really is just an understanding of the nature of human experience. He studies his own life. And he studies humanity through spiritual texts, and through great books, and by observing very closely what happens. It's like Socrates says, “An unexamined life is not worth living.” It's pretty harsh, but Mark agrees with it.    Mark has a wonderful explanation about these and more, so you better listen and take notes of each and everything he said in this episode! In this episode of The Idealcast, Gene Kim sits down with Team of Team’s coauthor and CEO of Crosslead, David Silverman, and Director of Research and Development at CrossLead, Jessica Reif, for a two-part interview.  In Team of Teams, David and his coauthors explained how the Joint Special Forces Task Force in Iraq was struggling to achieve its mission, and how they turned it into a success. Their experience led to a deep and critical rethinking of almost everything in US military services and in the commercial industry. Now at CrossLead, David works with Jessica Reif to continue researching and codifying these practices into their management framework. In Part 1 of the interview, Gene and his guests discuss the structure and dynamics of the transformation described in Team of Teams and how these leadership characteristics are needed today in the new ways of working. This leadership framework reinforces the concepts of common purpose, shared consciousness, empowerment, and trust within organizations to help teams work together more effectively in complex environments, particularly when they have to continuously adapt to change. The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk Episode #260: Mark Divine - How To Create An Unbeatable Mind At twenty-six Mark Divine graduated as Honor Man (#1-ranked trainee) of SEAL BUD/S class number 170. Mark served for nine years total on active duty and eleven as a Reserve SEAL, retiring as Commander in 2011.  His leadership of teams was so effective the government tasked him with creating a nationwide mentoring program for SEAL trainees.  He earned his MBA at NYU.  In 2007 he launched the SEALFIT program to provide transformational personal and team training experiences. The training utilizes an integrated warrior development model he developed, called Unbeatable Mind, which draws from his 20 years as a SEAL and business leader, 25 years as a martial artist and 15 years as yoga practitioner.  Mark has written has written four books, including The Way of The SEAL, and Unbeatable Mind. The Learning Leader Show "Do today what others aren't willing to do.  You're 20X more capable than what you think." Show Notes: Sustaining excellence: People who have practices that value excellence and practice it regularly Optimized training, sleep, and balance Mental health: Meditation, nature, learning, reducing potential to be stuck in biases Emotional health: Not afraid of going to therapy, spritual Why is therapy helpful? Mark married a therapist They can be an emotional coach "It's preventative maintenance" --> Must be proactive A "check up from the neck up" You should always be investing in improving your "self" Be mindful - yoga, zen.  It's an evolutionary skill to help you connect at a deeper level Why become a Navy SEAL? Got MBA and a CPA -- Got a job on Wall Street and hated it after three months Started Zen meditation... It changed his brain It created a structured program to look within himself and reflect Mark did not like what was happening in the outer world (with his job) He was meant to be a warrior and a leader Did he ever have doubts? No... Because he had prepared for the difficult moments through visualization and fully understanding his WHY "I created total certainty in my mind. 100% that I was going to become a SEAL. I won in my mind." This outlook helped him finish #1 overall in his BUD/S class How can we apply this to our world?  Outside of the military? You must deeply care about what you're doing... And then visualize your success. A "personal practice of excellence" "It must be something in your vision that you are really passionate about" "Visualize it as a completion.  Visualize doing it to completion." "You're the type of person who is worthy of completing that challenging task... Of achieving THAT" How do you respond to skeptics? The science backs it up... Do your research Give it a try... Why wouldn't you? VUCA = Volatility, Uncertainty, Complex, Ambiguous -- How to handle these situations Creating a decentralized organization -- Why this works in the military and in business (trust and certainty) Why you must "learn to embrace risk" -- Cannot be afraid of failure... And the plan must be flexible "Do today what others won't" -- 20X more capable than what you think "Society has weakened us... Everything is easy now.  You need to force yourself to do hard things." "Challenge leads to growth." "Your body will adapt to the new reality."  "Push it past where you think it can currently go" "You must challenge yourself every single day" Exercise - Write your own obituary.  Think "What would people say about me?" Do the deep self awareness work to "know thyself" "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for everything" "Derive your passion around purpose. Create your set of principles." Originally, there was a scathing obituary written for Alfred Nobel... It was meant for his twin brother, but there was a mistake and someone wrote it about him.  It changed his life.  He was not aware of how badly he was thought of... And he became known for peace moving forward.  So much so... That they named a prize after him. How Brad Stevens and Bill Belichick have mastered the art of coaching Why the "hacking movement" is not good according to Mark There must be deep learning over many years to get to mastery level of anything Simplify = Be narrow on what you want, get rid of everything else.   We’ve all heard how difficult it can be to become a Navy SEAL – the physical challenges alone can make or break one’s success. Today’s guest and host of The Unbeatable Mind podcast, Mark Divine, had that part covered, but he ensured his success by mastering his thoughts as well.   From a disempowered background and core story, Mark didn’t always have dreams of becoming a Navy SEAL. In fact, he actually had a successful career as a CPA, but he longed for something more that also appealed to his athletic side.   Tune in to find out how Mark shifted his thought patterns and discarded those that didn’t work to accomplish his goals then and how he continues to apply those skills in his life and businesses now. I love how Mark’s approach links the heart and mind – you’re going to be amazed at just how simple it can be once you can quiet your mind and focus on one task at a time.   --      Questions Asked in This Episode: What led you to begin you Zen practice? What were some of the core beliefs of your family? What was the driver to become a Navy SEAL? Why did you find the process of becoming a Navy SEAL to be “easier?” If someone is feeling disempowered, what would you recommend for a visualization? What goes on in regard to training at your retreats? How can you break through mentally? What are you most excited about right now?   In This Episode We Talk about: How Mark went from CPA to Navy SEAL Mark’s Zen and meditation practice Changing the patterns of your thoughts from disempowering to empowering What it means to “practice on the bench” The BIG Four Skills (1. Breath Control 2. Maintaining, Managing and Curating Positive Direction of Emotions and Thinking 3. Always Hold an Image of What Success Looks Like and 4. Front Sight Focus) The importance and power of visualization Integrative training with mind and heart The Box-Breathing technique Disengaging from past events to free up energy The different levels of resiliency   Quotes:   “When I started asking better questions, then I started to get different answers.”   “The absence of thought is when the answers came to me.”   “Use your imagination to see a version of you that’s whole.”   “If you can see it, you can speak it and then you can believe it.”   “Create a positive memory of the future.”   “Sever the negative energy of the past so you can attract the force of the future which pulls you toward the future.”   “We always have value and a gift to give, no matter what happens to use, as long as we’re here.”   -- Mark is from upstate New York and did his formal undergraduate education at Colgate University. His years at Colgate University were focused on athletic endeavors such as competitive swimming, rowing and triathlon racing, interrupted by brief episodes of academic activity. After graduation from "the Gate" Mark started his professional career as a CPA with Coopers & Lybrand in New York City. Clients included luminous and no-longer existent financial firms such as Solomon Brothers and Paine Webber.  Four years later, with an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business in his briefcase, he left behind the suit to pursue his inner vision to become a Navy SEAL officer. He was 26 when he graduated as Honor Man (#1 ranked trainee) of his SEAL BUD/s class 170. Mark was fortunate to serve with many great men and women on active duty for nine years and in the reserves for eleven...retiring at the rank of Commander in 2011. After leaving active duty in 1997, Mark started his second business career as an entrepreneur. He co-founded the successful Coronado Brewing Company and launched NavySEALs.com in the same year he left active duty. To this day, it is the leading website for gear and information about the SEALs.  Mark's business career was interrupted by a stint as an Adjunct Professor of Leadership at the University of San Diego, where he was pursuing his Doctorate in Leadership, then by a one-year recall to active duty in 2004. The recall took him to Baghdad with SEAL Team One to conduct a special project for Naval Special Warfare Command surrounding the role of the USMC in Special Operations. While in Iraq, Mark developed Kokoro Yoga, which allows you to see, feel, hear, and live the goal you are looking to achieve through warrior visualization.  In 2007 he launched his CrossFit affiliate and the now internationally known SEALFIT program to provide transformational personal and team training experiences. The training utilizes an integrated warrior development model he developed, called Unbeatable Mind, which draws from his 20 years as a SEAL and business leader, 25 years as a martial artist and 15 years as yoga practitioner.  He now hosts a highly rated podcast on iTunes called Unbeatable Mind. SEALFIT and Unbeatable Mind are uniquely effective at elevating clients to a higher level of operating, thinking and leading - encompassing the full spectrum of human experience: Body, Mind and Spirit in Self, Team and Organization. Mark advises and trains a diverse group of clients through his Unbeatable Mind and SEALFIT programs including: Olympic medalists, CEOs, Superbowl champions and other professional athletes.    Resources:   The Unbeatable Mind Podcast https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-unbeatable-mind-podcast-with-mark-divine/id955637330?mt=2   UnbeatableMind.com SealFit.com Books: The Unbeatable Mind by Mark Divine http://a.co/36s1ZH8   The Way of the Seal by Mark Divine http://a.co/c0ncWFr IG: @sealfit Checkout my website at https://loriharder.com. “The only way to really get better is to experience pain, to get uncomfortable, go to places that you don’t want to go, and improve.”Jesse ItzlerJesse Itzler fast-talked his way right out of college into a recording contract, ultimately taking his music all the way to MTV, the Billboard 100 and even an Emmy.Jesse Itzler then took an entrepreneurial left-turn, creating and selling big companies — companies like Marquis Jet, the world’s largest prepaid private jet card company, and Zico Coconut Water — before wooing Spanx founder Sarah Blakely (worth over $1 billion) all the way to the altar.Jesse Itzler eats only fruit before noon. And when he's not raising three kids, he runs 100 mile races, raises millions for charity and can be found court side supporting the Atlanta Hawks — the NBA team he recently purchased with some friends. What I'm trying to say is that Jesse Itzler is a quite the character. An amazing life highlighted by one predominant theme:never be afraid to fail. But there is one thing that scares Jesse Itzler: stagnation.Despite all his success, in 2010 Jesse felt his life had settled into a too-comfortable routine. So he did what any rational human would do: he invited a Navy SEAL to move in with him.But this was no ordinary SEAL (as if any such thing exists). This was David Goggins — perhaps the most intense, taciturn individual walking planet Earth. A one man metaphor for adversity destruction, Goggins' example and words formed the original inspiration behind my own journey:When you think you are done, you've only accomplished about 40% of what you are truly capable of.Goggins military record is astonishing. As a Navy SEAL, he was one of an elite group of men regularly sent on some of the toughest missions in the world. He is the only member in the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training, Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Honor Man), and Air Force tactical air controller training. Not only has he faced combat in Iraq, he served as the body guard for Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.To honor his brother soldiers felled by battle and to raise money for charity, David lost 100 pounds in 60 days and went on to tackle the 10 most rigorous ultra-endurance challenges on the planet, compelling his 260-pound frame to top finishes at races like Badwater– a 135 mile jaunt across Death Valley in 130 degree heat (finishing 5th as a novice) — and Ultraman– 1 320-mile 3 day triathlon circumnavigation of the Big Island of Hawaii he completed with his tennis shoes duct taped to the pedals of an ill-fitting loaner bike to a 2nd place finish overall. He even completed 203.5 miles in the 48-Hour National Championship endurance foot race, earning a spot among the top 20 ultra-marathoners of the world.Just another training day for Goggins, topped off with a recent Guinness World record for most pull ups in a single day: 4,025.Goggins accepted Jesse's invitation with just one rule: for 31-days, Jesse had to do every thing David asked him to do. No exceptions. What happened next would change Jesse's life forever. An adventure chronicled in his new book, Living With A Seal: 31 Days Training With The Toughest Man On The Planet*. I found the book super fun and highly entertaining. So when my travels took me to Atlanta, I jumped at the chance to meet up with him. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
